A resident and native of Kentwood, he died at 6:57 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond. He was 68. Visiting at McKneely Funeral Home, Kentwood, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. Visiting at the funeral home from 8 a.m. until religious services at 10 a.m. Monday, conducted by the Rev. Chris Watkins. interment in Hutchinson Cemetery, Kentwood. Survived by his wife, Eva McNabb of Kentwood; a stepdaughter, Jo Ann Pitre of Independence; a stepson, Donald Barousse of Hammond; two brothers, Donald McNabb and Edgar McNabb, both of Kentwood; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Helen McNabb, and three infant children.

MELIET, THELMA MCLAUGHLIN
A loving mother and homemaker, she died at 9:10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, at her residence. She was 84, a resident of Watson and native of Baton Rouge. Visiting at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., from 5 p.m. until religious services at 7 p.m. Tuesday, conducted by the Rev. Milford Walters. Survived by a daughter and son-in-law, McBeth and Fred Betz; a son and daughter-in-law, Daryl and Terry Meliet; a sister, Margie Lee, and nine grandchildren. Preceded in death by her husband, Hubert V. Meliet; a son, Buel Brown; a daughter, Mary Brown; and a sister, Natalie Bliss.

MILLER, JR. JENNINGS BRYAN
Funeral services for Jennings Bryan Miller Jr., 78, a resident of Baton Rouge, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Johnson Funeral Home, Lake Charles. Bruce Katz will officiate. Burial in Sallier Cemetery. Visitation at the funeral home was from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and will be after 9 a.m. Sunday. He died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, at his residence. He was a native of Lake Charles and a descendant of a pioneer Lake Charles family. He graduated from Lake Charles High School, and attended LSU, LSU School of Law, McNeese Junior College, Northwest Oklahoma University and Mexico City College. While at McNeese in 1941, he won first place in extemporaneous speaking at the Southern Forensic Tournament, marking one of the first times McKneese College ever won first place in any collegiate competition. They competed against such schools as LSU and Tulane University. He was a practicing attorney in Lake Charles for many years. He lived in Baton Rouge for a large part of his career. He was a staff announcer at KPLC Radio in Lake Charles, and worked with the U.S. Air Force hurricane reconnaissance. He was senior assistant general counsel for the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a B-17 navigator on bomber missions in the European Theater, and retired as a lieutenant colonel. He earned the Air Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters. He also served in the Korean conflict and Vietnam War. He was a member of the Reserve Officers Association, Air Force Association and Jewish War Veterans of America. He qualified for Sons of the American Revolution and Sons of the Republic of Texas , and was a member of Sons of Confederate Veterans, Francis T. Nicholls Camp in Baton Rouge. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a life member of Order of the DeMolay. He was a member of the Louisiana Bar Association and American Bar Association. He was a private pilot and aircraft owner. He was a member of Temple Sinai in Lake Charles, and B'nai Israel Temple in Baton Rouge. He was also a member of the VFW. He is survived by a daughter, Jeneane Miller Elliott of Parker, Colo.; a sister, Doris Elaine Miller Lanier of Lake Charles; a brother, Harry Wilson Miller of Bowling Green, Ky.; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The family requests memorial donations be made to Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Alexandria.

MORRIS, TILMER R.
A resident of Bogalusa, he died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at Bogalusa Community Medical Center. During World War II, he was in the Reserve Advanced Ordnance ROTC at LSU and was called to active duty in April 1943. He was sent to Aberdeen Proving Ground, Aberdeen, Md., for basic training and officer candidate school. He was shipped to Italy in September 1944, and was assigned to Company F, 337 Regiment of the 85th Infantry Division. He fought in three campaigns, Rome-Arno, Po Valley and Northern Appennines. He earned Cross Rifles, Bronze Star and Purple Heart. When the German troops surrendered, he was transferred to the Ordnance in the Army of Occupation in Italy until discharged in January 1946. Morris, a graduate of LSU, was a supervisor in the Bogalusa city school system and was active in the community. He was a member of First Baptist Church. When Crown Zellerbach relinquished management of the Washington Parish Fair to the community, he was named the executive vice-president. His activities included the Krewe of MCCA, Bogalusa Community Medical Center, YMCA board of directors and Washington Parish Library Board. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Jean Morris; and a daughter, Pamela Aline Morris. He is survived by a daughter, Bernadette Morris of Baton Rouge; and a sister, Hazel Olsen. Pallbearers will be Tommie Bush, Nathan Bush, Herbert Bush, Kenton Bush, Christopher Perry and Adam Perry. Honorary pallbearers are Ronald Perry Sr., Bob Yarbro, Dan McNeil, Wood Thornhill and Dr. Vincent Hotho. Visitation at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home, 216 Alabama St., Bogalusa, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday and after 9 a.m. Monday. Religious services in the funeral home chapel at 11 a.m. Monday, with the Rev. Bob Adams officiating. Entombment in Sanctuary of Peace Mausoleum.

NESSELHUF, ELIZABETH B.
Born Margaret Elizabeth Brewer on Sept. 28, 1908, in Manzanola, Colo., she died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, in Birmingham, Ala., at the home of her granddaughter. She was 93 and a resident of Baton Rouge for 62 years before moving to Birmingham in 1997. Visitation at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd., from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and in the chapel from 10 a.m. until services at noon Monday. Burial in Greenoaks Memorial Park. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Fred A. and Beverly L. Nesselhuf of Prairieville; a sister, Barbara B. Harris of San Antonio; four granddaughters, Linda K. Bottoms and husband Stephen of Birmingham, Elizabeth N. Bateman and husband David, and Lori N. Schmolke and husband Robert, all of Baton Rouge, and Kay Keller of Lafayette; two grandsons, John Fred Nesselhuf of Jackson ville, Fla., and Chad Louis Miranda of Baton Rouge; four great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandson; and a niece and nephew, Debbie Harris and Gerald C. Harris, both of San Antonio. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis A. Nesselhuf; a daughter, Peggy Lou Nesselhuf Miranda; and parents, Fred A. and Mina P. Brewer. Pallbearers will be John Fred Nesselhuf, Chad Louis Miranda, Stephen Bottoms, David Bateman, Chris Maranto, Steven Maranto, Gerald C. Harris and Ryan Kellgren.

NORWOOD, SYRIL CHANEY
A resident and native of Pride, she died at 9:52 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, at Lane Memorial Hospital in Zachary. She was 75. Visiting at Charlet Funeral Home Inc., Zachary, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. Visiting at Sandy Creek Baptist Church, Pride, from 9 a.m. until religious services at 11 a.m. Monday, conducted by the Rev. Darwin Hall and the Rev. Dale Phillips. interment in Ballard Family Cemetery. Survived by her husband of 56 years, C.J. Norwood of Pride; a daughter and son-in-law, Amy N. and Manny Garza of Spring, Texas ; two sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and Sandy Norwood and Bruce and Arlene Norwood, all of Pride; a brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Evelyn Chaney of Baton Rouge; a niece and nephew; six grandchildren, Shane Norwood and wife Rhonda, Brock Norwood and wife Debbie, Jordon Garza, Kelby Garza, Lane Norwood Jr. and wife Kelli and April Norwood; and two great-grandchildren, Grant Norwood and Ragan Griffin. Preceded in death by her parents, Ivy and Ida Noble Chaney. Pallbearers will be Shane, Brock and Lane Norwood, Kerry Chaney, Robert McConnell and Carl Forbes. She was a member of Sandy Creek Baptist Church.

RAINEY, ELAINE STARKEY
A resident of Amite, she died at 10:10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, at Hood Memorial Hospital in Amite. She was a native of Hammond. Visiting at McKneely Funeral Home, Amite, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and after 10 a.m. Tuesday. Religious services at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Tuesday, conducted by the Rev. Ray Hudson. interment in Durbin Cemetery, Independence. Survived by three daughters, Glenda V. Lambert, Darlene Aymond and Elaine M. Rainey, all of Amite; four sons, Mark Rainey of Amite, Samuel Rainey of Kentwood, Bruce Rainey of Amite, and Todd Rainey of Independence; four sisters, Dorothy Starkey of Albany, Regina Blough of Denham Springs, Glenda Smyser of Upland, Calif., and Margaret LeBlanc of Independence; a brother, Jake Starkey of Bush; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her husband, Alton Rainey; mother, Idee Gulotta, father, Jake Starkey, and grandson, Jody Lambert.

ROBERT, VALLIE H.
A resident of Burnside, she died at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, in Baton Rouge. She was 89. Arrangements are pending at Ourso Funeral Home, Gonzales.

ROUSSEL, DOREL J.
A retired operator with Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp. and a resident of Gonzales, he died Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. He was 75 and a native of Hester. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Visiting was at Welsh Funeral Home, Gonzales, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday. Visiting at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until religious services at 2 p.m. Sunday, conducted by the Rev. Jim Law. interment in Lusk Cemetery. Survived by his wife, Virginia E. Roussel, Gonzales; a son and daughter-in-law, Brian J. and Carol G. Roussel, Hester; two sisters, Myrtis Millet, Pride, and Margie Becnel, Gramercy; two brothers, Edgard Roussel Jr. and Calvin Roussel, both of Gramercy; two grandchildren, Brittany and Megan Roussel; four stepchildren, Louis Wilkinson, Georgia, Keith Wilkinson, Pearl River, Edith Borel, Baton Rouge, and Karen Seiwert, Pride; and six stepgrandchildren, Brian and Jennifer Borel, Chris and Stephanie Seiwert and Amber and Courtney Wilkinson. Preceded in death by his parents, Edgard Roussel and Rose Mae Poch; three sisters, Hazel Babin, Dorothy Hamilton and Hildred Verett; and two brothers, Hudson and Woodrow Roussel.

SCALLAN, MAE RUTH
A retired Calcasieu Parish school teacher, with 25 years of service, and a resident of Baton Rouge, she died at 2 a.m. Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. She was 84 and a native of Alexandria. Visiting at Welsh Funeral Home from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, with recitation of the rosary at 7:30 p.m. Visiting at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church from 9 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Monday, celebrated by the Rev. Vic Messina. interment in Greenoaks Memorial Park. Survived by two sisters, Hazel S. Broussard, Baton Rouge, and Doris S. Wilcox, Arizona; and a brother, Leo C. Scallan Sr., Baton Rouge. Preceded in death by her parents, Gaston Joseph Scallan Sr. and Mittie Marie Chandoir Scallan; and a brother, Gaston Joseph Scallan Jr. She received a bachelor of arts degree from Northwestern Louisiana University and a master's degree from LSU. Retired from the Louisiana Highway Department and the city-parish, she died Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, at The Retirement Center. She was 90, a resident of Baton Rouge and native of Hammond. Survived by a brother and his wife, Hubert D. Crook and Lillian Crook of Baton Rouge; two nephews, William DeWitt Crook of Baton Rouge and Byard Weems of Tyler, Texas ; a niece, Beth Weems Seller of Meridian, Miss.; and extended family, Mary and Tom Arceneaux and their family. Preceded in death by her husband, L.J. Schenxayder; parents, George W. Crook and Grace Gould Crook; a sister, Zola Weems; and a brother, Dana Crook. A retired employee of Exxon Mobil Corp. and a longtime resident of Central, he died on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at Grace Nursing Home, Clinton. He was 84. Visiting was at the funeral home from noon until religious services at 2 p.m. Saturday, conducted by the Rev. Mark Martin, the Rev. Kevin Hand and the Rev. Shaffett, Central; three sisters, Idell and Etta Valentine, Central, and Inez Stockwell, Addis; a son-in-law, Clifford Richard, Broken Arrow; two sister-in-laws, Becky Scruggs, Annapolis, and Josie Gleason, Baton Rouge; two grandchildren, Allen Richard and wife Beth, Owasso, Okla., and Scott Richard and wife Susan, Broken Arrow; and six great-grandchildren, Grant Richard, Morgan Richard, Nichole Richard, Adelynn Richard, Bryce Richard and Eli Richard, all of Oklahoma .

SMITH, RANSDELL JOSEPH "R.J."
A resident of New Iberia for 42 years, he died at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, at Lafayette General Medical Center. He was 82 and a native of St. Landry Parish. Visiting was at Evangeline Funeral Home, New Iberia, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, with recitation of the rosary at 7 p.m. Visiting at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until religious services at 1 p.m. Sunday, conducted by the Rev. Steve LeBlanc . Entombment in Memorial Park Mausoleum with military graveside services conducted by VFW Post 982 Honor Guard. A memorial mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Affectionately known as "Doc", he served with the U.S. Army infantry in the Pacific during World War II. He served as the breeding technician for Iberia Parish for 29 years. He served as field supervisor for the Louisiana Breeders Cooperative in Baton Rouge for 12 years. He was a member of the National Dairy Shrine Association, the National Association of Artificial Breeders, the Louisiana Cattleman's Association and an honorary life member of the LSU Dairy Science Association. He is survived by his wife, Lona Trahan Smith of New Iberia; two sons, Mark R. Smith and wife Shelia of Lafayette and Carroll B. Smith and wife Bridget of New Iberia; three daughters, Pamela Dietz and husband Richard of Baton Rouge, Monica Moen and husband William of Denton, Texas , and Ellen Khoudari and husband Nassar of Mission Viejo, Calif.; two sisters, Ettavee Fontenot of Ville Platte and Edwina Hernandez of Lafayette; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, John Preston Sr. and Jubert Barzas Smith; a brother, John Preston Smith Jr.; and a sister, Geraldine S. Hebert. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Memorial donations may be made to Catholic High Developmental Fund or The American Heart Association.
