From 1938 to 1940, he played football for the Green Bay Packers under Coach Curly Lambeau, and after that, served as a captain in the U.S. Army, Infantry Reserves, during World War II. Upon becoming a resident of Shreveport in 1945, he began his career as president of Hudson-Rush Co. of Shreveport and Dallas, specializing as a manufacturer's representative of industrial process equipment. He was also one of the original partners of Pelican Supply Co. and McElroy Metals. He was a registered professional engineer in Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas , and served a term as president of the Shreveport chapters of American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers and Instrument Society of America. His civic activities were numerous, but those closest to his heart involved advocacy for mentally retarded people. He was a founding member of both the Shreveport-Bossier and the Louisiana Association for Retarded Children. For five years, he served as a director of National Association for Retarded Citizens. He was vice chairman of the Louisiana Governor's Commission for Employment of the Handicapped and was appointed by President Gerald Ford to the 24-member President's Committee on Mental Retardation. A special joy for him was playing Santa Claus in 1977 at the White House Christmas party for handicapped children of the Washington , D.C., area. He was a founder of Evergreen Presbyterian Vocational School at Minden and a founder of Evergreen House, the forerunner of today's Providence House in Shreveport. Another passion for him was politics, particularly the development of the Republican Party in Louisiana , which for a century had been a one-party state. He was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives in 1964, along with Taylor O'Hearn, making them the first Republicans elected to the Legislature since Reconstruction. He served as House minority leader until 1968. He was a Louisiana delegate to three Republican Party national conventions, in 1964, 1968 and 1972. In 1972, wearing a friend's red-white-and-blue shoes, he ran for lieutenant governor on a Republican ticket headed by David Treen. He repeated the patriotic color scheme in a 1976 visit to the White House, wearing a red-white-and-blue tie that made him stand out among the dozens of other people in gray suits, prompting President Ford to remark, "It's so good to see someone here in Washington with the Bicentennial spirit!" He was also a member of Rotary Club, Shreveport Club, Shreveport Country Club and Shreveport Yacht Club. He was district lieutenant of the U.S. Power Squadron. He also served as president of the Holiday in Dixie Cotillion Club, as a director of Shreveport Chamber of Commerce and Arthritis Foundation, and as president of Community Council of Caddo and Bossier Parishes. He was an Eagle Scout and Scoutmaster, as well as an elder and Sunday school teacher at First Presbyterian Church of Shreveport. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucy North Hudson; a son who died in infancy, Morley Alvin Hudson Jr.; his parents and two brothers. He is survived by his wife, Catherine Franks Hudson; three daughters and a son-in-law, Nancy and Joe Ed Ketner, Courtney Morley Hudson and grandsons Max, Alex and Nicholas Hudson, all of Shreveport, and Lucy North Hudson of Pineville; stepchildren, Rob Franks and his wife, Vicki, of Shreveport, Susan Leake and her husband, Rucker, of St. Francisville, Allen Franks and his wife, Cathy, of Northfield, Mich.; and their children and grandchildren. He requested that anyone wishing to remember him with memorials should send them to Providence House, 814 Cotton St., Shreveport, LA 71101, or Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission, P.O. Box 3949, Shreveport, LA 71133. One more thing. He was a great dancer.
