Survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Ramona and Frank Powers, Grangeville, and Dolores and Glen Cox, Denham Springs; a son and daughter-in-law, Walter "Buster" and Bonnie Thompson, Hillsdale; a brother, John Phillips, Amite; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by husband, Walter T. Thompson Jr.; a daughter, Mattie Marie Thompson; two grandsons, Peavey Powers and Michael Cox; father, WCL "Chris" Phillips; mother, Mattie Mae Strickland Phillips; stepmother, Jewel Phillips; four brothers, Breed, Hanie, Willie Lea and Sidney Phillips; and a sister, Nellis Phillips Bridges. She was a member of Kedron Baptist Church.

VESSELL, JULIA B. "LIL’ BIT"
A retired employee of Modern Cleaners and a resident and native of St. Francisville, she died at 2:10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at Baton Rouge General Medical Center. She was 66. Visiting at St. Francisville Funeral Home, St. Francisville, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday. Religious services at St. Andrew Baptist Church at 7 p.m. Friday, conducted by Dr. G.R. Noflin. Dismissal at 10 a.m. Saturday. interment in Pilgrim Rest Cemetery. Survived by lifelong companion, Dave Duncan; a daughter, Shelia Whittaker; five sisters, Carrie Williams, Alice Morris, Sarah Shaw, Ruby Vessell and Gloria Dean Vessell; three brothers, Andrew, Charles and William Vessell; a granddaughter, Dedira Whittaker; a great-grandchild, Jalen Brown; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Preceded in death by her father, Willie Vessell; mother, Rosie Vessell; a brother, Willie Vessell Jr.; and a son-in-law, Edward Whittaker Jr.

WADE, SUSIE RINGGOLD "JOAN"
On Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at 5 a.m., our beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister and grandmother was called from labor to reward. A native of Port Hudson and a resident of Baton Rouge, she was born July 7, 1933, to the union of Willie Sr. and Winnie Ringgold. Viewing at Winnfield Funeral Home, 7221 Plank Road, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Religious services at Beech Grove Baptist Church, La. 68, Jackson , at 8 p.m. Sunday. Dismissal at noon Monday, with the Rev. Johnny Spears Sr., officiating minister. interment in the church cemetery. Survived by husband, Ledell Wade Sr.; mother, Winnie Ringgold; three children and spouses, Weslie Huff and Clyde, John Brown Sr. and Brenda, and Sgt. Ledell Wade Jr.; six grandchildren, Jeremy, Bethany, Ebony, John Jr., Clynesia and Everett; three sisters, Elise Joubert, Rosa Kelly and Clara Talbert; four brothers, Willie Sr., Smith, Clint and Albert Ringgold; father-in-law, Johnny Wade Sr.; three sisters-in-law, four brothers-in-law, two devoted cousins, Sarah Holmes and Elva McCoy; and numerous nieces, nephews, other cousins and friends. Preceded in death by father, Willie Ringgold Sr.; a brother, Eugene Ringgold; and a sister, Winnie R. Wells.

YOUNG, EVELYN WINTERS "SNOOK"
A retired nurses’ aide with Woman’s Hospital and a resident of Baton Rouge, she died at 9:45 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at Baton Rouge General Medical Center. She was 78 and a native of Clinton. Visiting at Capital Funeral Home, 3540 North St., 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. Visiting at Elm Grove Baptist Church, 1069 N. 38th St., 6 p.m. until religious services at 8 p.m. Friday, conducted by the Rev. J.R. Williams. Dismissal at 11 a.m. Saturday. interment in Gilbert Memorial Park. She is survived by her husband, Guss Young Sr.; two sons, Guss Young Jr. and George Allen Young Sr.; three daughters, Lucretia Young, Loretta Young and Marion Y. Creer; a daughter-in-law, Mary J. Young; and two sons-in-law, Samuel J. Creer Sr. and Bobbie E. Brown Sr., all of Baton Rouge; a stepson, Matthew Young, Oakland, Calif.; six grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren, four great-grandchildren and 15 stepgreat-grandchilden; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Sarah Harrison Winters; an infant son, nine sisters and three brothers.

BENSABAT, BETTY LILLY
A resident of Waveland, Miss., she died peacefully at home Saturday morning, Sept. 11, 1999. She was 63. Memorial Mass at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church, Bay St. Louis, Miss., at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Survived by five children, Corinne Bensabat Young of Tampa, Fla., Mark Perry Bensabat of Baton Rouge, Christopher Loeber Bensabat of Clear Lake Shores, Texas , Caroline Bensabat Marshall of Winter Park, Fla., and Andrew Dunbar Bensabat of Tampa; and 10 grandchildren. Preceded in death by her husband, George Dunbar Bensabat, who lived in Waveland; and her parents, Lillian and Orley Lilly, who lived in Grenada, Miss. Until this spring, she taught English and literature at Our Lady Academy in Bay St. Louis, where she was chosen star teacher five times by the students during her 12 years of service. Previously, she taught at St. Clare Catholic School in Waveland. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Betty Lilly Bensabat Scholarship Trust, Our Lady Academy, 222 S. Beach Blvd., Bay St. Louis, MS 39520. Edmond Fahey Funeral Home, Bay St. Louis, in charge of arrangements.

BERNARD, JOSHUA IRWIN
Born Nov. 16, 1979, he went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999. He was deeply loved by his family and many friends and will be greatly missed. He was the beloved son of John Newcomb Bernard and Stephanie Penny Baum. He is survived by a brother, John Jules Bernard; a sister, Nichole Schroop of Melbourne, Fla.; his paternal grandmother, Geraldine Newcomb Bernard of Diamondhead, Miss.; and maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Irwin Penny. His aunts and uncles are Mr. and Mrs. Vernon L. Slayton of Winston-Salem, N.C., Mr. and Mrs. Gerald James Bernard of Walker, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Glenn Bernard, Mr. and Mrs. Gary J. VanOss, Mr. and Mrs. Richard B. Odom, Mary Isabel Harris and Henry Harvey Harris of Mesa, Ariz. He is also survived by numerous cousins and special friend, Jamie Nicole Hill. Preceded in death by paternal grandfather, Gerald Jules Bernard. Pallbearers will be Todd Paul Guillot, Paul Bennett, Jonathan M. Wilson, Pat Taylor , William Worley, Richard B. Odom, Ronald Glenn Bernard and Gerald Thomas Bernard. Visiting at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd., 8 a.m. until religious services at 1 p.m. Monday. interment in Greenoaks Memorial Park.

BRUMFIELD, ELSIE MAGEE
A resident of Baton Rouge and a native of New Orleans, she died at 3:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at her home. She was born Sept. 16, 1921. Visiting at Greater New Guide Baptist Church, 9 a.m. until religious services at 11 a.m. Tuesday, conducted by the Rev. Isaiah Webster. interment in Roselawn Memorial Park. Survived by husband, Quincy Brumfield Jr., Baton Rouge; a daughter, Rosalyn M. Brumfield, Atlanta; a son, Kenneth Brumfield, Baton Rouge; two brothers, Delos Magee, Baton Rouge, and Willie Magee, Mount Hermon; and two grandchildren, Preceded in death by parents, two sisters and a brother. Miller & Daughter Mortuary, Zachary, in charge of arrangements.

CHUSTZ, WELDON J.

DYKES, O.L.
A resident of Hammond, he died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, in Hammond. He was 76 and a native of Springfield. Visiting at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home Inc., Ponchatoula, 11 a.m. until religious services in the funeral home chapel at 1 p.m. Monday. interment in Bankston Cemetery. Survived by two stepdaughters, Louise Prine, Springfield, and Joy Bonham, Arkansas; a stepson, Teddy Winkle, Springfield; nine stepgrandchildren; and 25 step-great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his wife, Ocie Hurley Dykes; and five brothers and sisters.

FONTAINE, JONATHAN JOSEPH
A beloved son, loving brother and wonderful friend to everyone, he joined the kingdom of God on Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, as the result of an automobile accident in Kentwood. His wonderful smile will remain in the hearts of his relatives and friends forever. He was the love of his family's life for 18 wonderful years. He was a native and resident of Baton Rouge. Survived by his mother, Tara Hernandez Arbour, Baton Rouge; stepfather, Paul Michael Arbour, Walker; a sister, Adair Francine Arbour, Baton Rouge; maternal grandfather, and maternal stepgrandmother, Roy J. and Silvia Hernandez, Baton Rouge; aunt, Lisa Hernandez Beard, Lufkin, Texas ; an uncle and aunt, Andre A. and Marie Hernandez, Baton Rouge; and five cousins, Amy Hernandez, Hillary A. Hernandez Spillman, Chelsea Spillman and Kendall B. Beard, all of Baton Rouge, and Chase B. Beard, Lufkin. Preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Francine M. Hernandez; and an uncle, Roy J. He will be greatly missed by his younger sister and best friend, Adair Arbour.

HEBERT, CHRISTIAN BLAINE DEBLANC (INFANT)
Our beautiful boy was born and left this earth to claim his place as a precious angel on Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at Woman's Hospital. Private graveside services with the family will be held Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at Resthaven Gardens of Memory. He is survived by his father and mother, Cyrus Peter deBlanc Jr. and Crista Hebert; brothers, Cody and Dickie; maternal grandparents, John and Mary Kay Carpenter; uncle, Dustin Carpenter; paternal grandmother, Dolly Hebert; aunt, Brandy Hebert; great-grandmother, Marjorie deBlanc Hebert; and numerous relatives and friends. A retired veteran service officer for Ascension Parish with 24 years of service and a resident of St. Amant, he died at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept 11, 1999, at Riverview Medical Center, Gonzales. He was 69 and a native of Port Arthur, Texas . He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict. Visiting at Welsh Funeral Home, Gonzales, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday. Survived by his wife, Josephine W. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Jambalaya Chapter No. 45, American Legion Gautreau-Williams Post No. 81 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3693. He was of the Catholic faith.

A resident and native of Pride, she died at 11:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at Lane Memorial Hospital, Zachary. She was 67. PRITCHETT, WALTER L.
Retired from the Merchant Marine and a resident of Denham Springs, he died of asbestosis at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at his home. He was 75 and a native of Montana. Visiting at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., from 3 p.m. until religious services in the funeral home chapel at 4 p.m. Monday. Cremation will follow with burial at sea. Survived by his wife, Shirley R. Pritchett; two daughters, Bernie Amorosa and Nancy McDaniel; and eight grandchildren. Preceded in death by a son, Kevin Noel Pritchett; a stepson, John Frances McDonner; and a grandchild, Blain Courtney Pritchett. He was a member of Seafarers International Union. A retired security officer for Southeastern Louisiana University and a resident of Kentwood, he died at noon Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at his home. He was 90 and a native of Mount Hermon. He was a U.S. Marine Corps and a U.S. Army veteran. Visiting at Spring Creek Baptist Church, Spring Creek, from 9 a.m. until religious services at 1 p.m. Monday, conducted by the Rev. Danny Smith. interment in Spring Creek Cemetery. Survived by his wife, Ona Gill Schillings, and a daughter, Glenda J. Schillings, both of Kentwood; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by three sisters, Agnes Gill, Doris Schillings and Edna Fish; two brothers, Pete Schillings and Doc Schillings; and a daughter, Linda Schillings. A retired warehouse manager for Ascension Parish School Board with 40 years of service and a resident of Donaldsonville, he died at 4:15 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at Prevost Memorial Hospital, Donaldsonville. He was born Jan. 16, 1918, to Sam and Frances Medine Solar of Donaldsonville. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II.
