Harold Paul Thibodaux Sr.

Longtime City of Franklin employee, Harold Paul Thibodaux Sr., died Monday, at the age of 86.

He was born in Bayou Blue on July 6, 1924. The Lord called him home while under care at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center, in Lafayette, with his family at his side.

He was a resident of Franklin for 48 years. He and his wife Goldie retired to Lafayette in 1995. While residing in Franklin he was a parishioner of the Catholic Church of Assumption. Upon retiring to Lafayette he became a parishioner of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church of Maurice.

He was hired by the city in the late 1970s under Mayor L.J. “Man” LeBlanc and was retained as street commissioner after Mayor Sam Jones took office in 1982. He eventually took on the duties of city clerk and held both responsibilities until he resigned as street commissioner to concentrate on clerk duties.

Among his many accomplishments, his proudest was coordinating the design, engineering and completion of the St. Mary Parish Peace Memorial in honor of all military veterans from the parish.

He devoted five years to this project that he held so very dear to his heart, and was elated upon its completion and dedication. After having served in the U.S. Navy, he felt his line of duty was a complete success seeing the Monument finished.

“We all owe Harold a debt of gratitude,” said former mayor Jones. “He was a great public servant who did his job with pride and love of community. He was there at any hour of the night be it hurricane or torrential rain. He was friendly and helpful to all. He was a man filled with integrity… He quietly did his work to add to the rich history of Franklin.”

He also had the pleasure of serving as an officer on many city and parish boards.

He was a member of the Krewe of Teche, where he reigned as King Querques XIX in 1991. He was an active member of VFW Post 4201, and American Legion Post 63.

Harold never met a stranger, and could always be seen with a smile on his face. He lived life to the fullest. He was a hard, dedicated worker and lived by his motto in life, “An honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay.”

Harold was a loving son, husband, father, brother, uncle, brother-in-law and Paw-Paw. Being a Paw-Paw is what he enjoyed the most. His greatest joy was to be surrounded by his family and especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Harold was blessed with children, Harry L. Thibodaux and his wife June H. Thibodaux of Lafayette, Ronnie Thibodaux and his wife Tana R. Thibodaux of Centerville, Harold P. Thibodaux Jr. of Lafayette, and one daughter Pattie T. Theriot and her husband Mike Theriot of Lafayette.

Paw Paw will be missed by his six grandchildren, Rebecca T. Hernandez and her husband Ryan Hernandez of Lafayette, David Thibodaux and his wife Emily R. Thibodaux of Lafayette, Neil Thibodaux and his wife Tobee D. Thibodaux of Centerville, Jeannie T. Segura and her husband Parrish Segura of Centerville, Stephen Theriot and his wife Dawn S. Theriot of Lafayette, and Stephanie Theriot and her fiancé Kyle Rose of Lafayette. He is also survived by six great grandchildren, Hunter, Lauren and Caroline Hernandez, Ali Theriot, Gracie Segura and Luke Thibodaux; one sister Ruth T. Chauvin, and numerous nieces and nephews who will also miss him.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Goldie Naquin Thibodaux, infant daughter Mary Jewel Thibodaux, his parents, Emile Thibodaux and Elda Daigle Thibodaux, four brothers, Clarence, E.J., Roy, and Milton Thibodaux, and one sister Una T. Poinbeouf.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at the Church of Assumption, in Franklin on Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, from 10 a.m. until time of service at 1 p.m. Father Lloyd Beniot will officiate a Rosary of Christian Burial at noon and a Mass at 1 p.m. Following mass, it is Harold’s wish for Military Honors to be held at the St. Mary Parish Peace Memorial located in Eastwood Park. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum at the Franklin Cemetery.

Bringing their Dad and Grandfather to his final resting place will be his sons Ronnie Thibodaux and Harold Thibodaux Jr., his grandsons David Thibodaux, Neil Thibodaux and Stephen Theriot, and his son-in-law Mike Theriot.
