Cyrus V. Jackson

Greatest husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather

FREETOWN - Services for the Rev. Dr. Cyrus Victor Jackson , 88, will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, at Mt. Olive Baptist Church No. 1 with the Rev. Henry L. Maze officiating. Dismissal will be at 10 a.m. Friday and interment will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at Journet and Bolden Funeral Home and will continue from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the church.

A native and resident of New Iberia for 88 years, Rev. Jackson died at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003, at Iberia Medical Center.

Rev. Jackson graduated from Iberia Parish Training Institute; Leland College,

Baker, Columbia University, New York; and J.J. Stark School of Religion, Columbia, S.C. He received an honorary Doctor of Divinity from the United Theological Seminary of Monroe.

Rev. Jackson was a retired educator who served the Iberia Parish School System for 35 years. He was principal at the following schools: Florence Pemilton (Lee St. Elem.), A.B. Simon (Johnston St. Elem.), and Jonas Henderson Jr. High (Anderson Middle School). When desegregation was ordered, he moved to the central office of the Iberia Parish School Board. He retired as a visiting teacher for the school board. After retiring, he taught briefly at Catholic High School.

Rev. Jackson was the pastor of the following churches: Mt. Olive B.C. No. 1, Freetown; Mohorn B.C., Mamou; and True Fellowship B.C., Plaissance. He was interim pastor at St. Paul B.C., Opelousas; and St. Paul Congregational Church, New Iberia. At the age of 82, he retired from pastoring at the Star Pilgrim Baptist Church after having served there as pastor/teacher for 39 1/2 years.

Rev. Jackson served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1948 as a Sergeant First Class. He served as executive secretary and president of the Union Sixth District Missionary Baptist Association, associate dean of the Congress of Christian Education, Louisiana State Baptist Convention and secretary of the Leland College Trustee Board. Rev. Jackson was the first black citizen appointed to serve on the Iberia Parish Airport Authority. He was a member of the Iberia Parish Bi-racial Committee during the years of integration. Rev. Jackson was a member of the Iberia Parish Ministerial Federation. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Inc., Olive Branch Lodge No. 37; Free and Accepted Masons P.H.A., Royal Arch Masons, Iberia Chapter No. 33; and many other civic, professional and religious organizations.

He is survived by his wife, Olevia Simon Jackson of New Iberia; his son, Dale Jackson of Charlette, N.C.; four daughters, Cyrene J. Walker and Sheryl J. Broussard, both of New Iberia, Dr. Althea Jackson of Eunice and Karen Douresseau of Beaumont, Texas ; four sisters, Mae Ruth Jackson of New Iberia, Middie Barnett and Lovenia Martin, both of Columbia, S.C., and Juanita Coe of Georgetown, S.C.; 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Rev. Jackson was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Mary Gilliam Jackson ; two brothers, Herbert Jackson Sr. and Wilbert Jackson ; and his sister, Virginia J. Traylor.

Pallbearers will be Kenneth, Timothy and Jason Jackson , Lionel Collins, Christopher Simmons and Mark Lewis.

Honorary pallbearers will be Mt. Olive Baptist Church, former educational administrators, students, staff and church congregations under Rev. Jackson 's leadership; ministers and laypersons of the Louisiana State Baptist Convention, Union Sixth District Missionary Baptist Association and Union Seventh District Missionary Baptist Association; medical doctors and professionals, caretakers, neighbors, community and friends.

Journet and Bolden Funeral Home of New Iberia is in charge of arrangements.

Melvin G. Ross

LAFAYETTE - Funeral services for Melvin George Ross, 69, will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at First Assembly of God Church with the Reverend's Tommy Faulk and Floyd Turner officiating. interment will be in Holy Mary, Mother of God Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, at Delhomme Funeral Home, which will reopen at 8 a.m. Friday until the time of services.

Mr. Ross, the son of Claude Ross and the former Larina Gascon, was a native of Huron, S. D., and a resident of Lafayette. Mr. Ross died Monday, Sept. 8, 2003, at Meadowbrook Rehabilitation Hospital.

Mr. Ross was a Korean War veteran serving from 1950-53. He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church of Lafayette.

He is survived by his wife Gilda Patsy Ross of Lafayette; two sons, Johann Quincy Ross of Los Angeles, Calif. and Edward Derwinn Ross of Lafayette; four sisters, Dixie Gaulke and Lyndia Turner, both of Yuma, Ariz., Claudia Ross of Mitchell, S.D., and Rachael Grass of Minneapolis, Minn.; a brother, Robert Ross of Wisconsin; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one son.

Pallbearers will be Alfred Alborado, Donald McCoy, Billy Debysingh, Gary Leleaux, Mathew Hundmall, and Clive Dillon.

Honorary pallbearers will be Mack McCulsky, Glenn Leleaux, and Bruce Allen.

Delhomme Funeral Home of Lafayette is in charge of arrangements.

Leroy Hebert Jr.

FRANKLIN - Funeral services for Leroy John Hebert Jr., 46, will be

at 3 p.m. Thursday at Church of the Assumption Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael Russo and Deacon Ricky Picard officiating. interment will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Church Cemetery in Baldwin.

Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. today with a 7 p.m. rosary at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, Miss. Visitation will also be from 2-3 p.m. Thursday at Church of the Assumption Catholic Church in Franklin.

Mr. Hebert was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church. He was Director of Environmental and Safety for Mississippi Valley Gas and had formerly worked for Southern Natural Gas. He was a graduate of Franklin High School and received a Bachelor of Science in pyschology from the University of Southwestern Louisiana . He was a member of the LSU Alumni Association and the Tiger Athletic Foundation.

He is survived by his wife, Sheila Lamber Hebert of Brandon, Miss.; his son, Bradley John Hebert of Brandon, Miss.; his father, Leroy John Hebert Sr. of Franklin; two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Moore of Franklin and Kelley Carline of New Iberia; a brother, Joey Hebert of Franklin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Hebert was preceded in death by his mother, Emilies Picard Hebert.

Pallbearers will be Mike and Brian Picard, Matthew Hebert, Mikhail, Alexander, and Nicholas Lambert-Oswald. Raymond Sr., Clint, and Brent Young.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude's Catholic Church, 399 Barrow St., Pearl, Miss. 39208.

Ott & Lee Funeral Home of Brandon, Miss., is in charge of arrangements along with Ibert's Mortuary in Franklin.

Beatrice G. Delahoussaye

Funeral services for Beatrice Green Delahoussaye, 84, are pending.

Mrs. Delahoussaye died at 4 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003, at Consolata Nursing

Wilfred P. Gachassin

Funeral services for Wilfred P. Gachassin, 82, are pending.

Mr. Gachassin died at 8:55 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003, at Dauterive Hospital.

Ralph W. Barton

Loving father and grandfather

Funeral services for Ralph William Barton, 86, will be held at noon Saturday, at David Funeral Home with the Rev. Harlan Gott officiating, along with military graveside rites conducted by the VFW post 1982. interment will be in Beau Pre Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services, Saturday at David Funeral Home.

A native of Greer, S.C. and a resident of Jeanerette and a former resident of New Iberia, Mr. Barton died at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003 at Rehabilitation Hospital of Acadiana in Lafayette.

Mr. Barton retired from the City of New Iberia as a laborer. He was in the Army and served in W.W.II. He was an avid sports fan.

He is survived by his daughter, Marilyn B. Douglas and her husband, Joe Douglas of Corpus Christi, Texas ; two brothers, Earl and Hubert Barton of Greer, S.C.; two granddaughters, Mekelle Douglas of Forth Worth, Texas , and Christina Douglas Gabrysch and her husband, Dr. Jeremy Gabrysch of Dallas, Texas ; and his grandson, Joey Douglas of Corpus Christi, Texas .

Mr. Barton was preceded in death by his wife, Teeny Perry Barton; his father, Daniel Barton; his mother, Lena Hawkins Barton; a brother, Guy Barton; and his sister, Beatrice Foster.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

David Funeral Home North, Trotter Street, is in charge of arrangements.

Irma Celestine Fusilier

Funeral services for Irma Celestine Fusilier, 92, will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Edward Catholic Church with Rev. Alfred Ayem, S.V.D. officiating. interment will be in the St. Edward Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be 7 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at Fletcher Funeral Home Chapel with a rosary recited at 9:30 a.m.

A native of Cecilia and a resident of New Iberia, Mrs. Fusilier Passed away at 8:03 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, at Iberia Medical Center.

She was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church.

She is survived by one son, Robert Fusilier, Jr. of New Iberia; one daughter, Ethel Hill and friend Morris Collette of New Iberia; three sisters, Cecile Joe of New Orleans, Esther Demouchet of Breaux Bridge and Marie Boyd of Cecilia; five grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 30 great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Mrs. Fusilier was preceded in death by her husband Robert Fusilier Sr.; parents Innocent and Corrine Leblanc Celestine; one sister, Anna Belle Washington ; two brothers, Paul Sam and Ernest Celestine and a great-grandson Ronnie Hill Jr.

Pallbearers will be Ronnie Hill Sr., Winifred Spencer, Morris Collette, Jerome Davis Sr., Willie Thomas, and Robert Thibodeaux.

Honorary pallbearers will be Gerald Sr. and Tyrone Davis, Gordon Hill, Robert Fusilier Jr. and Harold Landry.

Fletcher Funeral Home of New Iberia is in charge of the arrangements.
