Sister Mary Denise Fortier

NEW ORLEANS – A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for Sister Mary Denise Fortier, 78, at 10 a.m. on April 6 in Merry Convent Chapel.

A native of Jeanerette, Sister Denise died April 6 in Memorial Medical Hospital after a brief illness.

Sister Denise attended the Mercy School in Jeanerette and entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1936. She professed to her religious vows on Aug. 16, 1939, and earned her bachelor’s degree from Loyola University in New Orleans in 1949. Sister Denise earned her master’s from the University of Notre Dame.

From 1939 to 1960, Sister Denise taught in parochial schools, St. Alphonsus, Holy Name of Jesus and St. Francis Xavier in Metairie and Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Kenner.

From 1960 to 1990, she completed an educational career of 50 years by serving as a secondary teacher or administrator at Our Lady of Mercy in St. Martinville and Mercy Academy in New Orleans.

During the last decade of her 62 years of Mercy service, Sister Denise computerized the records of the Mercy Alumnae. Members include the graduates of Holy Name of Jesus High, Redemptorist Girl’s High and Mercy Academy.

Sister Denise is the sister of Anna Trahan and Elodie Renoudet, both of New Iberia; Evelyn Nauck of Lafayette, Lydia Thibeaux of Alexandria, and the late Alfred Fortier Jr., Elvise Gravois and Sister M. Agnes Fortier. She is survived by nieces, nephews and Sister M. Emmanuel Fortier and other cousins.

Sister Denise was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Elodie Brown Fortier.

All Faiths Funeral Home of New Orleans was in charge of arrangements.

Lucille Monic

ABBEVILLE – Services for Mrs. Walter Monic, 88, the former Lucille Hebert, will begin at 10 a.m. today at the David & Hebert Funeral Home. interment will be in the Holy Rosary Mausoleum of Kaplan.

Visitation was from 3-10 p.m. Friday, with a 7 p.m. rosary at the funeral home, which will reopen at 8 a.m. today until time of services.

A native of Abbeville and resident of Kaplan, Mrs. Monic died at 8:10 p.m. Thursday, April 16, 1998, at Vermilion Health Care of Kaplan.

The David & Hebert Funeral Home of Abbeville is in charge of arrangements.

Eunice B. Gautreaux

Services for Eunice B. Gautreaux, 69, will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael Guidry. interment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation was from 3:30 -10 p.m. Saturday, with a 7 p.m. rosary at the David Funeral Home of New Iberia, which will reopen at 8 a.m. today and will be open all night until time of services. A rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. today.

A native of Franklin and resident of New Iberia, Mrs. Gautreaux died at 6:20 p.m. Friday, April 17, 1998, at Lafayette General Hospital.

Mrs. Gautreaux is survived by her husband, Alfred Gautreaux of New Iberia; one son, Marty Gautreaux of New Iberia; two brothers, Leonce Bonin of New Iberia and O’Neil Bonin of Columbus, Ga.; four sisters, Mrs. Clifford (Janet) Dronet, Mrs. Danny (Corrine) Hebert, Mrs. Lloyd (Anite) Leblanc and Mrs. Claude (Esther) Vice, all of New Iberia and five grandchildren.

Mrs. Gautreaux was preceded in death by her parents, Marcelus and Elfrida Norris Bonin and three brothers, Bill Bonin, Peter Bonin and Tony Bonin.

Pallbearers will be David Hebert, Ernest Bonin, O’Neil Bonin, Skip Dronet, Tommy LeBlanc and Claude Vice Jr.

Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Bonin, Farrin Collins and Jimmy Bonin.

The David Funeral Home of New Iberia is in charge of arrangements.

John Lewis Sr.

ABBEVILLE – Services for John “T-John” Lewis Sr., 66, will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Therese Catholic Church. interment will be in St. Paul Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-10 p.m. today, with at 7 p.m. rosary in the Fletcher Funeral Home Chapel, which will reopen at 7 a.m. Monday until time of services.

A resident of Abbeville, Mr. Lewis died at 12:20 a.m. Wednesday, April 15, 1998, at Lafayette General Hospital, following a brief illness.

Mr. Lewis is survived by his wife, Rena Mae Derouselle Lewis of Abbeville; seven sons, John Lewis Jr. and John Terry Lewis Sr., both of Lafayette, Kenneth Lewis, Dennis Lewis and Jason Lewis, all of Abbeville, Larry Lewis of Atlanta and Clyde Lewis of San Diego; four daughters, Linda Johnson , Vanessa Levy, Shirley Mitchell and Angela Cessac, all of Abbeville; five brothers, Harold Lewis and Harry Lewis, both of Milwaukee, James Lewis, Jude Lewis and Dalton Lewis, all of Beaumont, Texas ; three sisters, Jean Gilliam of Milwaukee, Thelma Jones of Beaumont, Texas , and Yola Section of Breaux Bridge; 41 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mr. Lewis was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Orelia Pete Lewis; three brothers, Joseph Lewis, Albert Lewis and Henry Lewis and one sister, Eunice Noel.

Pallbearers will be Terry Lewis, Larry Lewis, Kenneth Lewis, Jason Lewis, Clyde Lewis and Patrick Sampay.

Honorary pallbearers will be John Lewis Jr., Dennis Lewis, Charles Lewis, Issac Julian, Paul Julian and Logis Sampay.

The Fletcher Funeral Home of Abbeville is in charge of arrangements.

Bertha D. Guidry

ST. MARTINVILLE – Services for Bertha Delahoussaye Guidry, 92, will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church. interment will be in the St. Michael Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. - 10 p.m. Monday, with a 8 p.m. rosary at the Pellerin Funeral Home, which will reopen at 8 a.m. Tuesday until time of services.

A native of New Iberia, Mrs. Guidry died Saturday, April 18, 1998, at the I.H.S. South of New Iberia.

Mrs. Guidry is survived by one son, Norris Guidry of Lake Charles; three daughters, Mrs. Clarence (Jeanette) Champagne of St. Martinville, Mrs. Richard (Shirley) Chastant of Scott and Mrs. Willis (Barbara) Touchet of New Iberia; one sister, Mrs. Johnny (Enola) LeBlanc of Lafayette; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Guidry was preceded in death by her husband, Luke Guidry; one daughter, Ruby Thibodeaux; one brother, Ike Delahoussaye, and one sister, Josephine Debebec.

The Pellerin Funeral Home of St. Martinville is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Odom

EUNICE – Services for Robert L. Odom, 63, will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church with the Rev. Jules Arceneaux officiating. interment will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. rosary at the Ardoin Funeral Home Chapel, which will reopen at 8:30 a.m. Monday until time of services.

A resident of Eunice, Mr. Odom died at 12:30 a.m. Saturday, April 18, 1998, at the Savoy Medical Center.

He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force and was a supervisor for Guillory Tank Truck Service.

Mr. Odom is survived by his wife, Faye G. Odom of Eunice; one son, William B. Odom of Alexandria; two daughters, Peggy Odom Smith of Carencro and Nancy Odom Fontenot of New Iberia; one brother, C. J. Odom of Eunice and four grandchildren.

Mr. Odom was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Vina Odom.

The Ardoin Funeral Home of Eunice is in charge of arrangements.

Viola B. Burk

JEANERETTE - Services for Viola S. Becnel Burk, 63, will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church with the Rev. Ed Degeyter officiating. Entombment will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. today with a 7:30 p.m. rosary at David and Landry Funeral Home, which will reopen at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

A native and resident of Jeanerette, Mrs. Burk died at 2:15 a.m. Sunday, April 19, 1998, at her residence.

She was a former radio dispatcher for the Iberia Parish sheriff’s office for 17 years.

Mrs. Burk is survived by her mother, Adele Stansbury Pepper of Jeanerette; one son, Bill Becnel of Jeanerette; four daughters, Heather Burk, Mrs. Gary (Simone) Champagne and Mrs. Everette (Urusla) Gouner, all of Jeanerette and Mrs. Earl (Toni) Hebert of Lafayette; one sister, Donna Pepper of Jeanerette; her former husband, Simon “Bec” Becnel; and nine grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Burk; and her stepfather, Edison Pepper.

Pallbearers will be Antoin Stansbury Jr., William Becnel Jr., Gary Champagne Jr., Jeremy Hebert, Joshua Hebert and Kenneth Stansbury.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Becnel Sr., Brant Blanchard, Joseph Boudreaux Jr., Gary Champagne Sr., Everette Gouner III and Earl Hebert Jr.

The David and Landry Funeral Home of Jeanerette is in charge of arrangements.

Lilia H. Romero

Services for Mrs. Edias Romero, 84, the former Lilia Hulin, will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church with the Rev. Michael Guidry officiating. Entombment will be in the Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Visitation will be from 2:30-10 p.m. today with a 7 p.m. rosary at David Funeral Home, which will reopen at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

A native of Vermilion Parish and resident of New Iberia, Mrs. Romero died at 7:40 a.m. Sunday, April 19, 1998, at Azalea Villa Nursing Home.

She is survived by three sons, Harvey Romero and Roland Romero, both of New Iberia and Herman Romero of Youngsville; two sisters, Amelina Hulin Duhon and Levie Hulin Gashassin, both of New Iberia; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Romero was preceded in death by her husband, Edias Romero; her parents, Louis Hulin Sr. and Althea Romero Hulin; four brothers, Aurlien Hulin, Lodias Hulin, Otis Hulin and Louis Hulin Jr.; and two sisters, Auronic Hulin Duhon and Marie Hulin Romero.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Glenn Romero, Eric Romero, Gordon Romero, Hal Romero, John Romero, Keith Romero, Ryan Romero and Steven Romero.

The David Funeral Home of New Iberia is in charge of arrangements.
