Rev. Rogers Johnson Sr.

FOUR CORNERS – Services for Rev. Rogers Johnson Sr., 71, will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. John Baptist Church with the Rev. Lenel Watson, president of Union 6th District Missionary Baptist Association, officiating.

The eulogy will be given by Rev. Francis Davis, pastor of West End Bibleway Christian Fellowship and interim pastor of Star Pilgrim Baptist Church. interment will be in the St. James Cemetery in Jeanerette.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at the church.

There are men who write history and there are those who make history, but very few are those who live long enough to see the difference they have made and enjoy the fruit thereof. The Rev. Rogers "Bonchas" Johnson Sr. was one of those rare people who was an example of a spirit-filled selfless life, blessed by none other than God himself.

The Rev. Rogers Johnson was born Oct. 18, 1926, in Mallard, La., to Laura and Benjamin Johnson Sr. He was united in marriage to Lillie Mae Cerf on Jan. 31, 1948. To this union three children were born, David Johnson , Bettye Joyce Johnson Tillman and Rogers Johnson Jr.

Rev. Johnson accepted the Lord as his personal Savior on April 10, 1948, and was baptized April 25, 1948, by the late Rev. Aaron Marks in Bayou Teche in Sorrell. Rev. Johnson preached his first sermon Dec. 12, 1948, for Rev. Marks' pastoral anniversary. He was ordained July 28, 1951, by the late Rev. H.J. Smith of the Young Preacher's Missionary Baptist Association. He accepted the call to the pastorate in January 1960 at the St. James Baptist Church of Lydia, where he served faithfully for 37 years, and Rock Zion Baptist Church of Sorrell where he served for 31 years. He was employed by Morton Salt for 38 years and took an early retirement to give full service to his ministry. Rev. Johnson was a member of Doric Lodge No. 23 of Glencoe and New Light Chapter No 41. He served the Young Preacher's Missionary Baptist Association and the Rural Progressive Ministry in various capacities over the last 50 years.

He moved from earth to glory on March 2, 1998, at 11:30 p.m. Rev. Johnson was preceded in death by his mother and father; one brother, Kellogg Johnson ; and two sisters, Cora Bennett and Clementine Marks, all of Houston.

Rev. Johnson used mightily of God in many capacities, but the area that gave him the greatest delight and for which he was most humbled was the many "spiritual sons" that his ministry gave birth to. Because of God’s use of Rev. Johnson as a nurturing ground, the Christian community is far richer. They are the Revs. Edward Watson, Eddie Moore, Leonard Keyes, Francis Davis, Zachary Mitchell, Charles R. Jolivette, Morris Evans, Robert Perry and Timothy Boyd. Never one to be constrained by convention, Rev. Johnson 's love for and encouragement of the ministry and ministers crossed over into the arena of the female ministry service by including minister Beulah L. Dapremont, as well as his own beloved daughter, minister Bettye J. Tillman. Certainly Solomon had Pastor Johnson in mind when he wrote, "The fruit of the righteous is a tree of Life, and he that winneth souls is wise." (Proverbs 11:30)

He leaves to celebrate his life and labor, as well as his memory; his loving wife of 50 years, Lillie Mae Cerf Johnson ; three children, David Johnson , Rogers Johnson and Minister Bettye Johnson Tillman, all of Four Corners; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, Benjamin and Emile Johnson of Houston and Joseph Johnson of Four Corners; two sisters, Beatrice Mitchell of Houston and Fannie Jackson of Beaumont, Texas ; two aunts, Mattie Robinson of Port Arthur, Texas , and Anna Delasbour of Katy; four adopted daughters, minister Beulah Dapremont, Diane Lyons, Hope Lewis and Paula Joseph Cage; his faithful friend, Mr. Lawrence Charles; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
