Coleman
Beatrice Coleman, 71
Funeral services for Beatrice M. Coleman, 71, of Jonesboro were held May 4 at the Chatham Pentecostal Church with the Revs. Andy Wilson and Jerry Dark Jr. officiating. Burial followed in the Springhill Cemetery.

Mrs. Coleman died May 2 at Schumpert Medical Center after a brief illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Winfred C. Coleman and two brothers, Roy Mason and James Mason.

She is survived by son, Steve Coleman and wife Dixie Ann of Jonesboro and Terry Lynn Coleman of Jonesboro; daughters, Sherlyn Beatrice Caraway and husband Jimmy of Weston and Brenda June Knox and husband Leon of Hodge; brother, Alvin Mason of Campti; sisters, Lillian Cupples of Arkansas City, Kansas; Vera Rigdon of Texas , Katherine Stephens and husband Lamar of Jonesboro; Lucille Fitzpatrick of Jonesboro, Betty Huckaby and husband Red of Jonesboro and Doris Gordon and husband Bill of Weston, six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Greg Coleman, Jason Coleman, Jeremy Coleman, Mark Caraway, Brent Bond and Jeff Huckaby.

Services were under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Koonce
Betty Koonce, 58
Funeral services for Betty Ann Koonce, 58, of Hugo, Okla. were held April 30 at the First Baptist Church in Hugo with the Rev. Doug McClure officiating. Burial followed in the Jonesboro Cemetery.

Ms. Koonce died April 28.Born Dec. 24, 1945 in Alexandria to Alvin George and Wilma (Embry) Koonce, she was a member of the First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her twin sister.

She is survived by one brother, Alvin Gayle Koonce and wife Shelby of Hugo; and one niece, two nephews and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.

Norman
Earnest Norman, 55
Funeral services for Ernest Monroe Norman, 55, of Jonesboro were held April 19 at the Jonesboro Church of Christ with Mr. Freddie Shows officiating. Burial followed in the Bethlehem Cemetery near Calvin.

Mr. Norman died April 17 at the Jackson Parish Hospital after a brief illness.

He is survived by his son, Earnest Norman Jr. and wife Christy of Jonesboro; daughters, Amanda Hall and husband Michael of Jonesboro and Pamela Hancock and husband Shad of Leesville; sisters, Barbara Waller of Calvin, Patsy Newton of Calvin and Martha Moffett of Bastrop; brothers, Mitchell Norman of Montgomery, George Norman of Calvin, John Norman of Goldonna, Ray Norman of Jonesboro and Gwinn Norman of Jonesboro; and five grandchildren, Deven Hall, Jasmine Hall, Kaylee Hancock, Ashley Griffith and Allyson Norman.

Services were under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Roden
Carl Roden, 65
Funeral services for Carl Rayford Roden, 65, of Jonesboro were held May 3 at the Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Gene Cumpton and David Walsworth officiating. Burial followed in the Gayla Traina Cemetery.

Mr. Roden died May 1 at the Jackson Parish Hospital.Born March 21, 1939 in Jonesboro, he was a boiler maker and welder for Rescar Incomporated and a veteran of the United States Navy during Vietnam.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Culpepper Roden of Jonesboro; daughters, Tracy Worthington and husband Chuck of Hodge; Christi Odom and husband Daryl of Quitman and Karla Roden of Jonesboro; sister, Mary Allen Roden of Hodge; brother, Charles Roden of Trinity, Texas ; and two grandchildren.

Honorary pallbearer was Eddie Maxwell.

Pallbearers were Donnie Gibbs, Andy Maxwell, Donnie Blake, David Maxwell, Ricky Nomey and Brad Porter.

Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.

Salter
Marilyn Salter, 57
Marilyn Dianne Salter, 57, of Bearden, Ark. died Tuesday, April 27, 2004, surrounded by the ones she loved. Marilyn graduated from Jonesboro-Hodge High School in 1964 and was married in 1996 to Robert L. Salter Jr. They began their family in 1970 and moved to West Monroe, La in 1979 then to Arkansas in 1992. Marilyn was diagnosed with cancer in June of 2003 and fought it with grace and dignity. Throughout her sickness, she touched each person with her strength and resolve until God finally took her to be His.

Marilyn is survived by husband, Robert L. Salter of Mena, Ark.; daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Justin Mosley of Bearden; son, Robert Jackson Salter of Mena; sister, Carolyn Brown of Shreveport; and numerous nieces, nephew,s a grand-nephew and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Thomas and Claudine Pyles Turner. All who knew her were truly blessed.

Graveside services were held at the Moss Hill Cemetery in Bearden.

Services were under the direction of Benton Funeral Home.

Whitlock
Robert Whitlock, 78
Funeral services for Robert Owen Whitlock, 78, of Quitman were held April 28 at the Providence Memorial Park Cemetery in Lake Providence .Mr. Whitlock died April 26 at the Jackson Parish Hospital after a brief illness.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Whitlock of Quitman; son, Dale Whitlock of Houma; daughter, Judy Myers and husband Randy of Oak Grove; and four grandchildren.

Services were under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Rangel
Richard Rangel, 25
Funeral services for Richard Lee Rangel, 25, of Quinlan, Texas were held April 16 at the Harmony Grove Cemetery in Gaars Mill with the Rev. Malcolm Self officiating.

Mr. Rangel died April 13 in Quinlan.

Born May 18, 1978 in Fort Worth, Texas , he was an air conditioning technician.

Mr. Rangel was preceded in death by his mother, Brenda Barlean Rangel.He is survived by his wife, April Haden Rangle of Hurst, Texas ; daughter, Ivy Gail Rangle of Hurst; son, Corbin Vincent Rangle of Fort Worth; and grandparents, Joseph M. Barlean and Gloria Kelly Barlean of Quinlan.

Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.

Weeks
Douglas Weeks, 77
Funeral services for Douglas Weeks, 77, of Goldonna were held April 18 at the Yankee Springs Baptist Church with the Revs. Craig Stephens and Glyn Mixon officiating. Burial followed in the Yankee Springs Cemetery.

Mr. Weeks died April 16 at Winn Parish Medical Center.

He was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church and a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps.

He is survived by his daughters, Debrah Howing of Little Rock, Ark. and Sarah Hibbard of Monroe; sons, Danny M. Weeks of Ione, Calif., Timothy M. Weeks of Monroe, Mark Weeks of Danville and Dudley Weeks of Brittany Germany; sisters, Violet E. Palmer of Goldonna and Christine Hibbard of Goldonna; brother, Evyonne Weeks of Goldonna; 10 grandchildren; and 11 nieces and nephews.

Honorary pallbearers were Andrew McCarty Jr., Joshua Beard and Greg Duncan.

Pallbearers were Myron Adams, Steven Weeks, Donnie Afemand, Montie Beard, Roam Weeks and Robin Bullard.

Services were under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Winnfield.

Brown
George Brown, 90
Funeral services for George William Brown, 90, of Oxford, England will be held at 1 p.m., April 16 at the St. Michael and All Angels Church in Summertown, Oxford. Burial will follow in the Wolvercote Cemetery in Wolvercote, Oxford. Mr. Brown died April 6 at the Radcliff Hospital in Oxford.

Born in Detroit, Mi. in 1914, He moved to England at an early age. During World War II he worked with the Secret Service and later in life helped restore the Spitfire airplane that can be seen on display in the D-Day Museum in New Orleans. He was employed by Radcliff Hospital for more than 40 years.

He is survived by his wife, Lilian Freda Brown of Oxford; children, Jim Brown and wife Jan of Jonesboro; George Brown of Oklahoma City, Michael Brown of Oxford, Gordon Brown of Oxford, Susan Findley of Oxford, Anita Blake of Oxford, and Elizabeth Hiles of Oxford; 19 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Pointer
Marvin Pointer, 88
Funeral services for Marvin L. Pointer, 88, of Quitman were held April 13 at the Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Wayne Morrow and Donald Rudd officiating. Burial followed in the Brooks Chapel Cemetery in Quitman.

Mr. Pointer died April 10 at the V.A. Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

Born March 16, 1916 in Quitman, Mr. Pointer was a barber and a World War II veteran of the United States Navy and a Korean Veteran of the United State Air Force. He was a long-time resident of West Monroe and the owner of his own barber shop. He was also a 50-year member of the Iron Springs Masonic Lodge No. 342 in Little Rock, Ark. and a life member of D.A.V. Mr. Pointer volunteered many hours playing his fiddle for area nursing homes, churches and the recreation center.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Justin Grant Pointer and Minnie Tinsley Pointer, and five brothers.

He is survived by his wife, Myrtle U. Pointer of Quitman; sons, Clyde Pointer of Austin, Texas and Cliff Pointer of Little Rock, Ark., and grandchildren, Jeffrey Pointer of Little Rock and Christopher Pointer, of Little Rock.

Pallbearers were Shelton Moore, L.L. Robinson, Charles Tilley, David Brown, Lavelle Brown and Richard Johnson .

Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.

Rhodes
Leland Rhodes, 84
Funeral services for Leland Louis Rhodes, 84, were held April 12 at the Old Saline Baptist Church with the Rev. Calvin Hubbard officiating. Burial followed in the Old Saline Cemetery.

Mr. Rhodes is preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Lila Rhodes. Survivors are his wife of 56 years, Virginia Toms Rhodes of Old Saline; son, Stephen and wife Kerry of Brentwood, Calif.; daughter, Nancy and husband Ray Spiller of Arcadia; daughter, Melba and husband Virgil Stanford of Belmont, Calif.; granddaughter, Sarah and husband Rick O’Neal of West Monroe; and brother Raymond Rhodes of Houston.Pallbearers were Hilburn Toms, Murry Toms Jr., Brian Rhodes, Paul Rhodes, Charles Rhodes and David Rhodes.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leland Rhodes Memorial Fund, Old Saline Baptist Church, 5280 Ridge Road, Castor, LA 71016.A native of the Old Saline Community, Mr. Rhodes was born Jan. 1, 1920 and Passed away Good Friday, April 9, 2004 at the age of 84.During World War II, Mr. Rhodes served in the United State Navy as captain of an LCI(L) 190 in the Allied invasions of Sicily and Anzio. Upon return from the war in 1946, he ran the family’s country store at the junction of Hwys. 155 and 9. His career as an educator in Bienville Parish began at Jamestown in 1947. He then taught a year at Ringgold and finally took a permanent position at Saline High School, teaching mathematics, chemistry and physics. He completed a Masters of Education in Physics in 1965 at Northwestern State College, bringing invention and innovation to the classroom. In 1981, after 34 years of service, he retired from the post of Federally Assisted Program Director for the Bienville Parish School Board. Mr. Rhodes was a lifelong member of Old Saline Baptist Church, serving as teacher, song director, Chairman of Deacons, treasurer and “encourager.” His lifetime of community service included being President for the Pistol Hill Water System, President of the Old Saline Cemetery Association, Committee Member for the Saline Watermelon Festival, and harmonica player for the Old Saline Pickers and Grinners.

The family extends a special word of gratitude to many friends and family members who have supported us with prayers, presence and gifts during Mr. Rhodes’ illness.
