Al Martin “Lil Cajun” St. Romain Sr.
December 8, 1937 – February 8, 2005
Al Martin “Lil Cajun” St. Romain Sr., 67, a native of Cottonport and a resident of Stephensville, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at Terrebonne General Medical Center in Houma. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, and the American Legion and Knights of Columbus. He served his country proudly in the United States Air Force.
Al loved life and the many pleasures life had to offer. He will always be remembered as a man that was always happy and loved people. He always had a kind word and he never met a stranger. Al was truly an “old-fashioned gentleman.” Al would do anything for you, if you needed him he was there.
He loved to entertain and be the center of attention. He will always be remembered for his ability to play host to many friends and family with his famous boiled crabs and crawfish.
Very few things in life meant as much to Al as his love for bass fishing. A newspaper article dated July 18, 1973, said it best. “I lay awake night thinking about bass.”
Al, known in the fishing world as “Lil Cajun,” established himself as “the man to beat” in tournaments on the local level and the national level.
He was instrumental in getting bass tournaments to Morgan City in 1967. On the national level, Al was one of only 32 men chosen to compete in the 1st Bass Master Classic in 1971.
The location was to be kept a secret until the men were in the plane and the envelope was opened and revealed that they would fish in Lake Mead, Nev. Al gave it his best and finished seventh in the world.
Al’s love for bass fishing was the driving force behind starting clubs and tournaments in this area, and bringing fishermen from all over the country. Among all the things Al loved in this life, nothing compared to the love he had for his family.
His family always will treasure the fact that he and his wife of over 47 years, Gail, have always represented what a marriage should be like. They always remained in love and were always on their honeymoon together.
His love for his family always will include his favorite canine companion “Bell.”
Al was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him, and each life that he touched in his own special way.
He was the son of the late Ivy St. Romain Sr. and the late Aline Descant St. Romain.
He is survived by his loving wife of over 47 years, Gail M. St. Romain of Stephensville; one daughter, Tanya Oubre and her husband, George, of Stephensville; two sons, Al “Marty” St. Romain of Morgan City, and Mark St. Romain Sr. and his wife, Mary, of Erath; one sister, Geri Hebert and her husband, Emery, of Lake Charles; one brother, Ivy St. Romain Jr. of Stephensville; and three grandchildren, Mark St. Romain Jr., Alex Oubre and TJ Oubre.
Pallbearers to serve will be Alex Oubre, Casey St. Romain, John Murr, Roland Delette, Ray Beadle, Jim Welch Sr., Mark St. Romain Jr. and Kim Juneau.
