MRS. LOIS MIDKIFF

Funeral services for Mrs. Lois Midkiff, 71, of Leesville will be announced by Labby Memorial Funeral Home of Leesville.

She died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003 at Byrd Regional Hospital in Leesville.

IDELL SWEET

Fueral services for Idell "Cherry" Sweet, 77, of DeRidder, will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in DeRidder. The Rev. George Harris will officiate.

Burial will be in Beauregard Cemetery under the direction of Community Mortuary.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of service at the church Wednesday.

She died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003 in Beauregard Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Sweet was born in Opp, Ala. and moved to DeRidder in the early 1950's. She later became a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in DeRidder where she remained until her death.

Survivors include her spouse, Freeman Sweet of DeRidder; one son, Emery Joseph Taylor of DeRidder; one step-daughter, Sheralyn Bruner of DeRidder; one brother, Jimmy L. Taylor of DeRidder; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; five nephews, Terry, Larry, Robert, Anthony, and Bryant Taylor ; one niece, Diane Taylor Johnson of DeRidder; one great-niece and great-nephews.

NORMA JEAN BOSTIC

Funeral services for Norma Jean Bostic, 52, of Norfolk, Va., will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 24, at Mt. Zion Church in DeRidder. The Rev. George Harris will officiate.

Burial will be in Beauregard Cemetery in DeRidder, under the direction of Community Mortuary of DeRidder.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of service, Jan. 24.

She died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at Sentara Leigh Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Bostic was raised in DeRidder and moved to Norfolk, Virginia. She was a licensed practical nurse (LPN) at Sentara Leigh Memorial Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her father, Willie B. Rhodes.

Survivors include her husband, Ernest Bostic of Norfolk, Va.; her mother Tannie M. Rhodes McClenton of DeRidder; one brother, Russell B. Rhodes of DeRidder; Linda Faye Rhodes and Joyce Ann Steele, both of DeRidder.

LOUIS STEPHEN "JUNIOR" COOPER

Louis Stephen "Junior" Cooper Jr., 86, of Merryville, Passed away at 6:20 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004 at Beauregard Memorial Hospital in DeRidder. Funeral services will be held, Saturday, Jan. 24 at 10 a.m. at the Merryville United Methodist Church. Internment will be at Cooper Cemetery in Merryville under the direction of Hixson Funeral Home of DeRidder. The Revs. Steve Bush, George L. Glass Jr., and Dr. Whit Holmes will officiate the service. Visitation will begin Friday, Jan. 23 from 4-10 p.m. and will resume Saturday from 8 a.m. until the time of service at the church.

Mr. Cooper was born in the Junction Community and was a lifelong resident of Merryville. He served as Deputy Sheriff for BPSO, a retired Road Foreman of the Beauregard Parish Police Jury, Ward 2; and was retired from the Louisiana State Police as a State Trooper. He diligently served his state, parish and community as a law enforcement officer.

He was very active in community and civic activities, serving as a school bus driver and volunteering his time for all school functions. He served 27 years on the Democratic Executive Committee of District 2, member of the La. Association of Chiefs of Police and the National Association of Chiefs of Police, and the La. Peace Officers Association.

He was member of the Merryville United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent. He was a devoted husband of 67 years, father and grandfatehr.

His hobbies included deer hunting, fishing and visiting with his many friends.

Mr. Cooper is survived by five children, Lillian C. Karr and husband, Jimmy Karr of DeQuincy; June Reviel and husband, Kenneth Reviel of DeRidder; Ronald L. Cooper and wife, Jean of Montgomery, Texas ; Betty Lou C. Garanguay and husband, Rudy Garanguay of San Antonio, Texas ; and Steve Cooper and wife, Myreta of Lumberton, Texas ; sister, Hazel C. Edmonson and husband, Bill of Merryville; sister-in-laws, Zoe Slaydon and Mary Helen Smith, both of Merryville; 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Junior was preceded in death by his wife, Gussie, his parents, Louis and Lela Cooper and an infant son, Gary Lynn Cooper.

Mr. Cooper is a descendant of Isaac Cooper, his great grandfather and the founder of Cooper Cemetery in Merryville.

Pallbearers include his grandsons, Weldon Karr, Ken Reviel, DeWayne Rolen, Ronnie Cooper, Kurt Cooper, and Cory Cooper, and nephews, Carylass and Lyndon Slaydon. Honorary pallbearers will be the Merryville Police Department, the La. State Troopers and the La. State Troopers Color Gaurd.

RUTH COOPER SCHUETZ

Funeral services for Ruth Cooper Schuetz, 85, of DeRidder, will be at 2 p.m., Jan. 25, atRedeemer Lutheran Church in DeRidder. Rev. Gary Archbold will officiate.

Burial will be in Beauregard Cemetery in DeRidder.

Family visitation will be Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Hixson Funeral Home in DeRidder.

She died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, in Beauregard Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Schuetz was born November 30, 1918 in DeRidder. She was the Sunday School Superintendent at Redeeemer Lutheran Church for 30 years. She served as American Legion Auxiliary President at Post 27 in DeRidder for two years. She loved the daylillies that were grown for her by her husband. She especially enjoyed playing in the Canasta Club with her dear friends for forty years, but her family and her church were her primary focus.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Matthias H. Schuetz; one daughter, Virginia Phelps of Shreveport; one son, Kenneth Schuetz of DeRidder; one sister, Lillian Schlacter of North Augustus, S.C.; 11 granchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church of DeRidder, 811 Shirley St.

OSCAR WILLIAM (JOE) WELCH

Funeral services for Oscar William (Joe) Welch, 76, of Sugartown, will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23 in Labby Memorial Funeral Home Chapel of DeRidder. The Revs. Tim Whistine and Frank Ott will officiate.

Burial will be in Sugartown Cemetery.

Visitation will be today, Jan. 22 from 5-9 p.m. and then on Friday, Jan. 23, from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.

Mr. Welch died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, in St. Francis Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria.

He was a native and life-long resident of Sugartown and had worked for Civil Services. He was a member of Sam Todd #182 Masonic Lodge of Sugartown. He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his wife, Paulette Welch of Sugartown; one son, Tommy R, Welch of Rosepine; three daughters, Carolyn Howell of Rosepine, Tommy Booth and Nancy St. Andrie, both of Sugartown; two brothers, Archie Welch, of Lake Charles and Billie Welch of Mayport, Fla.; three sisters, Thelma Faddis of Eunice, Betty Kern of Sugartown and Essie West of New Llano; 18 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

JANELL SHEPPARD

Janell Sheppard died on March 9, 2004, in DeRidder at the age of 62. She was the daughter of Bill and Hallie Sheppard, all lifelong residents of the Merryville, DeRidder area.

Janell's friends visited her at Myers-Colonial Funeral Home Inc. at March 15. Burial was in Hinson Cemetery in Knight.

Janell was a very special lady who struggled from birth with the many symptoms of Down's Syndrome. After her father died in 1979 she ans her mother continued to live in the family home until her mother's death in 1993. Following her mother's death, she lived in the Beauregard Nursing Home in DeRidder until she relocated to Pine Haven Nursing Home in Rosepine. She will be fondly remembered by those in the nursing homes who knew her and who so kindly assisted her with her many needs.

Dr. Henry Carter, located in DeRidder, was a very important presence in Janell's life. He attended to her medical needs for many years and she recognized him as her friend.

Janell's sister, Willie Disbrow, and her niece, Penny Elia, frequently visited with her in the nursing home. Janell had a keen sense of humor. She derived great pleasure in sharing laughter with Penny and Willie.

She is survived by one brother, Ploman Sheppard of Vidor, Texas ; two sisters, Virginia Jamell of Russellville, Ark., and WIllie Disbrow of Newport Beach, Calif.; and a host of nieces and nephews.

GERTRUDE FEE CALHOUN TURNER

Funeral services for Gertrude Fee Calhoun Turner, 75, of Leesville, will be Friday, Dec. 24 at 2 p.m. at Lillie United Pentecostal Church under the direction of Hixson Funeral Home in DeRidder.

The Rev. Walter Shelton and the Rev. Daniel Slaydon will be officiating. Burial will be in Rosepine Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Dec. 22 from 5 p.m. until the time of service on Friday.

She died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004 at Beauregard Memorial Hospital in DeRidder.

Survivors include sons Buddie Calhoun of Natchitoches, Jerry Calhoun of Leesville and Jessie Calhoun of Bon Weir, Tx; daughters Sandra Wells of Wells, Tx, Betty Calhoun of Leesville; brother J.T. Fee of Pineville; sisters Elta Mae Breitag of Aberdeen, SD, Wanda Hoitenga of Alexandria and Linda Whittington of Rosepine; 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son Durl Gene Calhoun, two husbands Levi Calhoun and James Turner, a sister, Adel Parker and a brother T.J. Fee.

Mrs. Turner was a faithful member of Lillie Pentecostal Church where she taught Sunday school for several years.

She was a Gold Star Mother in Vernon Parish and a Member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Leesville. Mrs. Turner worked as a nurses aide for the Beauregard Nursing Home many years ago.

RODNEY S. HARMER

Funeral services for Mr. Rodney S. Harmer, 68, of Leesville, will be at 11:30 a.m. today, Dec. 24 at Labby Memorial Funeral Home in Leesville with the Rev. Dale Poe officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Leesville.

He died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004 at Beauregard Memorial Hospital in DeRidder.

Visitation will be today, Dec. 24 from 8 a.m. until time of service in the funeral home.

Services are under the direction of Labby Memorial Funeral Home in Leesville.

He worked for O'Neal Feed in DeRidder for the past six years. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, a member of the DeRidder and Leesville CB Club and a past member of the New Llano Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife Mary Wander Harmer of Leesville; son Alan Harmer of Leesville; daughters Sharon Williams of DeRidder and Patricia Lynn Dixon of Sugartown; sister Joan Battaglin of North Carolina and four grandchildren.
