Lee Etta Godeaux was born in 1936 in a rural area between Lawtell and Church Point, Louisiana . She attended school in Lawtell, was a parishioner of St.. Bridgette’s Catholic Chuch in Lawtell and married Auguste Venable in 1953 and had seven children. She and Auguste originally started out married life in Rayne and moved to Mire, Louisiana , in the spring of 1968.
Lee Etta and Auguste were parishioners of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Rayne, Louisiana , and Assumption Catholic Church of Mire, Louisiana . Lee Etta was a devout Catholic and had a faith in God that was unshakable. She taught First Communion Catholic Catechism to Assumption Parish children from approximately 1969 until 1983, when she began attending Nursing School. She was a life-long member of the Assumption Parish Ladies Altar Society and contributed to the success of countless fund-raising activities for the church.
While simultaneously seeing to the religious and educational needs of her seven children and working full-time for the Acadia Parish School System, Lee Etta graduated high school in one year's time and went on to obtain her Louisiana Nursing License. She scored in the top 1% of all nursing students taking state board exams for that year and by example, became an educational and spiritual role-model to her children, grandchildren and many adults in her community. She became a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1984 and chose Private Duty Nursing as a means to use her God-given skills as both a care-giver and nurse. Simply put "Nothing stopped Lee Etta."
Her sisters stated that Lee Etta was not only the hub of the Venable family, but was also the hub for the Godeaux family, and worked tirelessly to organize regular family reunions.
Jan Herpin knew and worked with Lee Etta in the Assumption Parish Pro-Life Chapter and was asked to comment on Lee Etta's contributions to that organization. Jan stated "Lee Etta Venable had a passion for the unborn. She was committed to saving the lives of those babies that might have been lost through abortion, as well as praying for those responsible for abortions. She was the backbone of her parish Pro-life organization. She regularly participated in a monthly Pro-life rosary and attended many Respect Life marches even when her health was failing. She was a role model to those around her. She will be greatly missed."
Mrs. Norma Higginbot-ham and Mrs. Enola Duhon, secretaries for Mire Elementary, reminisced about their relationships with Lee Etta and stated that when they met with Lee Etta, "they always found something to laugh about, throughout all those times she came to school to check on issues with her kids and then her grandkids" and "She was always so proud of all of you."
Mrs. Francis Doga, a sister-in-law, stated that she loved Lee Etta like a sister and felt that Lee Etta was the sister she never had.
Her children say, "Mom is the greatest inspiration in our lives. She is our hero, our best friend and our mother and she gave us unconditional love, support and laughter every single day of our lives. We'll miss her deeply."
"Your life was a map to God. Thank you for showing us the way. We will always love you Mom."
