Shel Kanter
Memorial services were held Monday, April 21, 2003, at 6:30 p.m. at Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home Chapel for Shel Kanter, 71, who died at 4:15 a.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2003 at his residence. The family visited with friends and relatives from 5 p.m. until the time of services Monday.
A native of Chicago, Illinois, Kanter became a regular in the homes of Acadia Parish residents since his arrival at KSIG in 1956 with the early morning, "Bill and Shel Show."
The trademark show of Radio Station KSIG, the antics of Bill Williams and Shel Kanter entertained, informed and heaped praise on their many listeners each weekday morning for a total of 42 years.
Whether it was a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico or his daily mystery quiz, Shel Kanter was a familiar voice for the families of Acadia Parish in the mornings.
Shel then continued the same early morning show after the death of his longtime sidekick Bill Williams two years ago. His last show was the day before he died, Monday, April 20, 2003.
An avid poet, Kanter frequently enjoyed to read poetry on the airwaves.
Shel was also very active in the International Rice Festival volunteering his time to various events and commentary on the festival for the past 45 years. During that time he also served as chairman of both the Children's Parade and the Grand Parade. In 1982 Shel was honored as Grand Marshall of the Friday Children's Parade then again in 1992 he and Williams were honored as Grand Marshalls of the Saturday Grand Parade.
Just last year, Shel was given the prestigious President's Award by officials with the International Rice Festival for his untiring efforts.
He was a member of the Rice Festival Board of Directors for over 35 years.
Shel was also a member of the Crowley Chamber of Commerce where he was a past boardmember. In 1968 he was honored by fellow Chamber Boardmembers as “Outstanding Director.”
Shel was also a dedicated volunteer and area spokesman for United Blood Services.
A longtime sports enthusiast, Shel was also a umpire for the Crowley Recreation Department and American Legion Acadia Post 15 for many years.
Shel was also the business manager for the American Legion Post 15 baseball team for 15 years and served as the president of the Crowley Umpire Association for a period from 1967-1973. Shel also served on a Citizen’s Committee Board of the CRD for a period of four years.
Shel could often be caught mikeside broadcasting any number of high school or recreation department sporting events through the years.
In 1997 both Kanter and Williams were honored by the Louisiana House of Representatives for their work in the radio industry, especially in a time of crisis.
A member of the Air Force beginning in 1951, Shel was in the Korean War. He was presented with a Bronze Service Star and National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal and the United Nations Service Medal. He was also an active member of Crowley's VFW Post 6720 and American Legion Acadia Post 15.
Survivors include, his wife, Deanie Daley Kanter of Crowley; three daughters, Patty Simon and her husband O.P. Simon of Crowley; Dianne McClelland and Angie Abshire, both of Crowley; one sister, Fran Dolin and her husband, Pete Dolin of Chicago, Ill.; Morton Kanter and his wife, Eloisa Kanter of Anaheim, Calif.; six grandchildren, Trey Simon, Ryan Simon, Hal Morgan, Deanie McClelland, Kenny Abshire and Mamie Abshire; three great grandchildren, Danielle Morgan, Nate Morgan and Cole Michael Simon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Anna Kanter; one brother, Mel Kanter; one daughter, Laura Kanter; one son, Rick Kanter; one grandson, Eric Stutes; one nephew, Paul Berko and a son-in-law, Kenneth Lee Abshire.Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home was charge of arrangements.

Josephine Leon
Funeral services were held Wednesday April 16, 2003, at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rayne, for Josephine Leon, 92, who died Monday, April 14, 2003, at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette.
Survivors include five daughters, Hazel Thibod-eaux, of Kaplan, Agnes Eaves of Lake Charles, Adeline Adams of Broussard, Marie Louise Forestier, of Duson, and Viola Granger of Scott; 25 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, and five great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Euchariste Bourque Menard; her first husband, Columbus Credeur, and her second husband, Lawrence Leon; two sons, Lester Credeur, and Lession Credeur; four brothers, and three sisters.
A rosary was recited Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Pallbearers were Floyd Smith, Gearld James LeJeune, Jimmy LeJeune, Randy Forestier, Henery Adams III, Kendall Granger, Shannon Credeur, Glen Credeur, Carol Thibodeaux, and Tony Forestier.
Burial was in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Gossen Funeral Home of Rayne.

Wilma B. Judice
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, for Wilma Boudreaux Judice, 82, who died Thursday, April 17, 2003, at her residence in Rayne.
Survivors include one son, Mike and his wife Lorie of Rayne; two daughters, Carolyn Estaville of Austin, Texas , Becky Judice of Rochester, New York; one brother, Roger Boudreaux of Breaux Bridge; ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was a member of American Legion Post 77 Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion, St. Joseph Ladies Altar Society, Catholic Daughters, and was also a Eucharist Minister, and St. Joseph Church Elderberry.
Mrs. Judice was preceded in death by her husband, Emery Judice; one son, Wayne Judice; her parents, Ben and Blanche Himel Boudreaux; three sisters; and six brothers.
A Rosary was recited Monday at 7 p.m.
Burial was in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Gossen Funeral Home.

C.W. Walters
CHURCH POINT –– Funeral services were held Saturday, April 19, 2003, at 10 a.m. in the Church Point Pentecostal Church, with the Rev. Pavlu officiating, for C.W. Walters, 68, of Sunset, who died at 10:57 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2003, in St. Frances Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria.
Burial was in the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Church Point.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Walters, Church Point; three sons, Clarence Walters, Forked River, N.J., and Glenn Walters and Douglas Walters, both of Church Point; two daughters, Carol Sue Dye, Lucedale, Miss. and Theresa Conrad, Martindale, Texas ; one brother, Claude Walter, Mobile, Ala.; six sisters, Levena Moss, Lucedale, Miss., Verrina Manti, Georgia, Virgigia Waver, Pickune, Miss., Mary Lois Woodard, Agricola, Miss., Barbara Williams, Wisconsin, and Carol Jean Weaver, Mobile, Ala.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Walter and Levena Butler; one son, Robert Walters; one granddaughter, Ashley Walkers; and two sisters, Jerry McComb and Brandy Walters.
He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
Duhon Funeral Home of Church Point was in charge of arrangements.

Johnson Hugh Yeager
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 21, 2003, in Parkerson Avenue Baptist Church, with the Rev. L.C. Lord officiating, for Johnson Hugh Yeager, 84, of Crowley, who died Wednesday, April 16, 2003, at Landmark Guest Home in Crowley.
Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Rayne.
Visitation was Sunday from 1 until 10 p.m. at Duhon Funeral Home and Monday from 9 a.m. until time of service at Parkerson Avenue Baptist Church.
Johnny was born in Clarks, La. on December 24, 1918. He was raised the Masonic Hose in Alexandria, La. He graduated from Bolton High School in Alexandria. From 1941 to 1945 he served in the United States Army, where he was stationed in England and France. He returned to Alexandria where he finished Alexandria Business College while working for Roy C Martin Sawmill. After working in the office and sawmill for a couple of years he went on the road selling lumber to lumber yards in Southwest Louisiana . In 1952, he moved his family to Rayne. While in Rayne, he started his own business known as Johnson H. Yeager Wholesale Lumber Co., which he operated for 43 years.
Johnny was an avid sports fan and was an LSU football fan for over 35 years. He worked with and coached Little League Baseball teams in Rayne for many years. At that time boys from ages 8-12 played on the same team. These teams played the games on the St Joseph School field. He was on the first Rayne Recreation Committee and remained active on this committee for many years. While on the committee, he worked with city officials to get grants for the development of playgrounds and parks. He was instrumental in helping to develop what is known today as Gossen Park.
He worked with the Rayne High School Athletic Department for many years. He also served as a past president of the Quarterback Club.
Johnson was elected to the Acadia Parish School Board in 1973 and served for 22 years. He worked hard for the education of the children in Acadia Parish. He worked very diligently to try to get computers in all of the schools. He made monetary donations to try to accomplish this goal. He also provided several scholarships to RHS students to help them to further their education. Johnny retired from the Acadia Parish School Board because of ill health. He served from January 1, 1973 to December 31, 1994.
He attended the First Baptist Church of Rayne for many years. He was also a member of the choir for many years. Johnny loved music and he played the clarinet in his younger years.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Viola H. Yeager of Crowley: two daughters, Carolyn Y. Eisenbrown of Atlanta, Ga., and Linda Y. Barraett and her husband, John, of Cape Coral, Fla; one son, Jim Yeager and his wife, Ida, of Rayne; one half-sister Olivia Mullen of Texas ; one half-brother, John B. Yeager, Jr of Mesquite, Texas ; ten grandchildren; Ericka E. Keen, David Eisenbrown, John Eisenbrown, Matthew Pritchard, Stacy Horwath, Bronson Yeager, Brantley Yeager, Heather Y. Smith, Billy Yeager, and Melissa Yeager; and six greatgrandchildren; McKensey Keen, Jack Eisenbrown, Kyle Smith, Kyle Keen, Andrew Eisenbrown and Trevor Yeager.
He was preceded in death by a son, Bill; his mother, Pearl H. Yeager; his stepmother, Mary W. Yeager; his father, John B. Yeager, Sr. and two brothers, Henry and James Yeager; and one half- sister, Hannah Malcolm.
Duhon Funeral Home of Crowley was in charge of arrangements.

Louis Granger Jr.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at St. Joseph Catholic Church for Louis Granger Jr., 67, who died Friday, April 18, 2003, in the Lafayette General Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Trahan Granger, of Rayne; two sons and their wives, Lawrence and Patricia Granger, Barry and Samantha Granger all of Rayne; one daughter and her husband, Estelle and Pierre Marceaux of Morse; ten grandchildren, Nicholas, Jeremy, Brendan, Emily, Andrew, Kristopher, Justin, and Hanna Granger, Heidi and Anastasia Marceaux; two sisters, Margie Randolf of Houston, and Betty Babineaux of Alexandria.
Mr. Louis was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Estellina Dupont Granger Sr.; and one brother, Aldon Granger.
Pallbearers were Nicholas, Jeremy, Justin, and Brendan Granger, also Charles Fontenot, David LeBlanc , Wilson LeDoux, and Kendall Granger.
Honorary pallbearers were Andrew and Kristopher Granger.
Altar servers were Jonathan Hebert, Karris Johnson , and Maranda LeBlanc .
Giftbearers were Hanna Granger, Emily Granger and Heidi Marceaux, and proclaiming the Scriptures were Dawn and Charles Fontenot.
Mr. Granger was a member of the National Guard for 11 years, a member of the American Legion Post 77, were he held office as Adjutant, was also a member of the Woodman of the World Lodge 31, holding office of Secretary, and Past President, he was also an Usher for St. Joseph Catholic Church for many years, as well as being a member of the Rayne Fire Department for over 25 years.
Visitation will be Monday from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 8:00 a.m. until services. A Rosary was recited Monday at 7:30 p.m.
Burial was in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Gossen Funeral home of Rayne.

Walter Boudreaux
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at 3:30 p.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Father Thomas Vu officiating, for Walter Boudreaux, 78, of Rayne, who died at 3:35 a.m. Monday, April 21, 2003, in American Legion Hospital in Crowley.
A rosary was prayed in the funeral home chapel at 8 p.m.Monday.
Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Viola Boudreaux, Rayne; one sister, Clarice Boudreaux Taylor , Port Arthur; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leah and Laurent Boudreaux; two brothers, Willie Boudreaux and Wallace Boudreaux; five sisters, Agnes Mouton, Emily Boudreaux, Laura Menard, Julia Cormier, and Georgina Conques.
Mr. Boudreaux served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a farmer in the Rayne community all his life.
Special thanks go out to the staff of American Legion Hospital on the third floor, to Dr. Curtis, Dr. Dawson and Dr. Duhon and the staff at Rayne Guest Home.
