Sammy Joe Payne
Funeral services were held Sunday, Dec. 18, 2005, at 1 p.m. in the Duhon Funeral Home Chapel in Crowley, with the Rev. L.C. Lord officiating, for Sammy Joe Payne, 71, of Crowley, who died at 3:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, in Crowley’s American Legion Hospital.
Visitation was observed from 3 to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. until time of services.
Burial was in Acadia Rest Haven Cemetery in Crowley.
He is survived by one daughter and her husband, Sherry and Abel Hernandez, Crowley; one daughter-in-law, Cydene Payne, Orange, Texas ; two sisters, Mary Jones, Oklahoma City, Okla. and Marlene Bird, Blaine, Wash.; one brother, Hal W. Payne, Mountain City, Tenn.; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Payne was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Payne; one son, James Doyt Payne; his parents, Doyt and Edith McNiell Payne; and one brother, Mac Payne.
He worked for Spell Brothers Trucking for 10 years and H. Brown until his retirement.
Duhon Funeral Home of Crowley was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Albert Basil Sonnier
Funeral services were held on Monday, December 19, 2005, at a 1:30 p.m. Mass of Christian burial at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Lafayette for Albert Basil Sonnier, 74, who Passed away on Saturday, December 17, 2005, at his residence in Lafayette.
Rev. Msgr. Glen J. Provost, pastor of Our Lady of Fatima was the celebrant and officiated the funeral Mass and conducted the services.
Gift bearers were Brittany Sonnier and Alysia Sonnier, readers were Rebecca Gardes and Jeanne Devalcourt, and Eucharistic ministers were Walter and Bonnie Camos.
interment was in Holy Mary, Mother of God Cemetery in Lafayette.
Musical selections were provided by Dolly Hawthorne, accompanied by Jason Pennington on organ.
Mr. Sonnier was a native of Rayne and a lifelong resident of Lafayette. He was a parishioner and usher of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Lafayette. Mr. Sonnier attended L.S.U. and while at L.S.U. was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity and graduated from S.L.I., now U.L.L.
He was a veteran of military service having served in the U.S. Air Force as a First Lieutenant. Mr. Sonnier was retired from the State of Louisiana Department of Labor where he served as a state auditor.
Survivors include his wife, the former Sevelia Vincent of Lafayette; one daughter, Mary Sonnier and her husband, David Eason, of Lafayette; two sons, Stephen B. Sonnier and his wife, Rebecca Gardes and David T. Sonnier and his wife, Debbie, all of Lafayette; seven grandchildren, Mandy Sonnier and her fiancé, Brandon West, of Monroe, Kory M. Sonnier and Rebecca Amman, of Baton Rouge; Brittany Sonnier, Alysia Sonnier, Beau Sonnier, Josh Sonnier, and Tyler Sonnier all of Lafayette; and one brother, Robert Sonnier of New Orleans.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Basil Sonnier and the former Nelda Thibodeaux and one son, Michael Albert Sonnier, D.D.S.
Visitation was held from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday and continued from 9:00 a.m. until service time on Monday.
A rosary was prayed at 6:30 p.m. in the funeral home.
The family asked that donations be made in the name of Albert Basil Sonnier to the Miles Perret Center, 2130 Kaliste Saloom Rd, Lafayette, LA 70508 or to the Benedictine Monds, St. Benedict’s Abbey, P. O. Box 333, Benet Lake, Wisconsin 53102-0333.
Pallbearers were Stephen Sonnier, David Sonnier, Kory Sonnier, Brandon West, Beau Sonnier, Josh Sonnier, Tyler Sonnier, and David Eason. Honorary pallbearers were Robert Sonnier, Richard D’aquin, and Richard Wilson.

The Sonnier family chose Delhomme Funeral Home, 1011 Bertrand Drive, to be in charge of all funeral arrangements.

Claude Boudreaux
Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 9, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church for Claude Boudreaux, 82, who died at 3:10 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2005, at American Legion Hospital in Crowley.
Visitation was observed Thursday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. until time of services.
A rosary was recited Thursday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.
Burial was in the St. Joseph Cemetery in Rayne under the direction of Gossen Funeral Home of Rayne.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Lou Gaspard Boudreaux of Rayne; one daughter, Rose and her husband Glynn Patin of Lafayette; two sons, Earl J. and Allen B. Boudreaux both of Rayne; two brothers and their spouses, Joseph Boudreaux of Lake Charles, and Clovis and Nessie Boudreaux of Rayne; two grandsons, Claude A. Boudreaux and Kevin Boudreaux; two great-granddaughters, Shelbie and Natalie; three great-grandsons Tanner, Zack, and Gavin.
Mr. Boudreaux was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Natilia Breaux Boudreaux; one sister, Marie Boudreaux; and one brother, Oray Boudreaux.
He served four years in the Army. He was a member of the American Legion in Rayne.
Pallbearers were Earl and Allen Boudreaux, his two sons; Claude and Kevin Boudreaux, his two grandsons; Michael Gaspard and Roy Boudreaux, his nephews; and John Richard, a friend.
Special thanks to Dr. Thomas Curtis and Dr. Karen Roden for many years of care, and the doctors and staff of the American Legion Hospital.
Also a special thanks to Acadian Home Care for the special care they gave, the American Legion Post 77 and the St. Joseph Catholic Church’s Good Samaritans.

Kenneth David Long
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, December 12, 2005, at Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home Chapel in Crowley for Kenneth David Long, 96, who died December 9, 2005, at American Legion Hospital in Crowley.
He was born on Sept. 24, 1909 in Leslie, Ark.
The eulogy was offered by his granddaughter Candace Gossen
The Rev. Truman Stagg officiated for the services.
Visitation was observed Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Monday from 8 a.m. until the time of services.
interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Mr. Long graduated with both a bachelor and masters degree in Latin, English, and Music from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and Ball State Teachers College, in Muncie Indiana.
He served as a national guardsman during World War I.
He was a lead designer and draftsman for C.G. Conn in Elkhart, Indiana, and designed a patented clarinet for the oldest continuous manufacturer of band instruments in America.
During World War II Conn was completely converted to precision instruments for the defense in which he worked for while heading up as band leader for the all girl dance band called the Kenny Long Band. He was also band, music, and choir director at various schools in Elkhart and Muncie, Indiana.
Moving to Natchitoches, Louisiana , he was the music professor at Northwestern State University and at Louisiana Technical College. Mr. Long was the band director for over 40 years, 25 of which he taught at Crowley High School and Iota High School where he retired.
He then became the nursery manager for Robinson’s Nursery for 10 years and a door greeter for Wal-Mart for many years before his final retirement.
Being able to read and write Hebrew and Latin, he wrote many papers and books on the Bible. He was a choir director at First United Methodist Church in Crowley and a long time parishioner and teacher for the Northside Assembly of God Church.
He loved to read, fish, and garden having won a lifetime achievement award for his beautiful yard. He played all the instruments in the band but his favorite was the saxophone and clarinet. His biggest lifetime achievement was as a music teacher, having taught thousands of students that remember him as the best band director ever.
He is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Lorraine Nettle of Deer Park, Texas , and Billie Jean Gossen of Rayne; two sons, David Arthur Long and his wife Lorna Jean Green of Owasso, Okla., and Noel James Long and his wife Deborah Huddleston of LaPorte, Texas ; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Mr. Long was preceded in death by his wife, Ilah May Stutsman Long; his parents, Arthur and Cloa Edwards Long; one brother, Clarence Edwards; and two sons-in-law, Francis Allen Gossen, Sr., and David Clifford Nettle.
Pallbearers were Kijika Istre, David Long, Noel Long, Robert and Andy Barousse and Doug Long.
Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home of Crowley was in charge of the arrangements.

Lawrence Wilridge, Jr.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m.Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005, in the Maryland C.M.E. Chapel in Branch, with Rev. Banks officiating, for Lawrence Wilridge, Jr., 70, of Branch, who died Saturday, Dec. 10, 2005, at his home in Branch.
Visitation was observed Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005, in the Maryland C.M.E. Chapel in Branch from 8 a.m. until time of services.
Burial was in the Maryland C.M.E. Church Cemetery.
He is survived by one daughter, Donna Wilridge of Branch; three sisters, Florida Gibson and Orelia Leger, both of Church Point; and Linda Landry, Lake Charles; one granddaughter, Natasha Joseph, Branch; and two great-granddaughters, Mallery and Desirea Joseph of Branch.
Mr. Wilridge was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Wilridge; his parents, Lawrence and Frances Wilridge, Sr.; one brother, Enis Wilridge; and two sisters, Hilda and an infant Wilridge.
Duhon Funeral Home of Church Point was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Wilfred “Pop” Randle
RAYNE - Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 17, 2005, at 10:30 a..m. at Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church for Wilfred Barnabas "Pop" Randle, 73, who Passed away Friday, December 9, 2005, after a courageous battle with cancer. Father Richard Wagner, O.J.J. will be celebrant of the Mass.
interment will be in the church cemetery.
He is survived by two daughters, Hazel Babineaux and her husband Phillip of California, and Carolyn White and her husband Glenn of Rayne; one niece, Beulah Randle-Byrd of Galveston, Texas ; twelve grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Emma Landry Randle; one daughter, Patricia Junius; one grandson, Trommie White ; his parents, Calvin and Beulah Lewis Randle; two brothers, Herbert Randle and Sonny Dorsey; and two sisters, Mary Dorsey-Hubbard and Alberta Randle.
Visitation will be observed Saturday, December 17, 2005, at Our Mother Of Mercy Catholic Church beginning at 8:00 a.m. until time of services.
Syrie Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

Hilda Marie Hanks Simon
Rayne - Memorial services were held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, December 9, 2005, at a Mass in St. Michael’s Catholic Church for Hilda Marie Hanks Simon, who died Tuesday, December 6, 2005, in Lafayette.
interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery #2.
Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Richard and husband Darrell, of Lafayette, and Tammy Mitchell and husband Billyaraguld, of Arkansas; two sons, John Ricky Simon, of Rayne, and Kenneth Wayne Simon and wife Nina, of Eunice; 17 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Simon; one daughter, Gloria Miller; parents Adam Hanks and Armenia Thibodeaux Hanks; one brother, Emile Hanks; and one sister, Vivian Smith.
Arrangements were entrusted to Gossen Funeral Home Inc. of Rayne.

Jack Edwards Wells
Funeral services were held Sautrday, Dec. 10, 2005, at 11 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church in Indian Bayou, with the Rev. John Locascio officiating, for Jack Edwards Wells, 76, of Scott, who died at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005, at his residence.
Visitation was observed Friday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. until time of services.
A rosary was recited Friday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.
Burial was in the Leger Cemetery in Rayne.
He is survived by his wife, Iris Wells, of Scott; five daughters and their spouses, Marian and Scott Dunbar and Jackie and Jody Fontenot, all of Church Point; Barbara and Danny Pippin, of Scott; Teena and Marty Gaspard and Rhonda and Ricky Foreman, all of Indian Bayou; two stepdaughters and their spouses, Denise and Ricky Moon, Orange Park, Fla., and Anita and Michael Reed, Edgewater, Fla.; one son and his wife, Glenn and Carol Wells, Loveland, Colo.; two stepsons and their wives, Carl and Ardene Bunch, Virginia Beach, Va., and Andrew and Rebecca Bunch, Murfreesboro, N.C.; an extended family of Denise and Darwin (T Bud) Stutes, Debbie and L.J. Harrington, Mona Thibodeaux, Kenneth Thibodeaux and Gwen Hanks; one brother, Foster Wells, Edgewater, Fla.; two sisters, Myrtle Edwards, Oak Hill, Fla., and Shirley Andrus, Edgewater, Fla.; special friends, Andrus and Lou Thibodeaux; 23 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth Clinton and Jack Wells; two sisters, Marian Sutton and Barbara Susie Woods ; and one brother, Tom Wells.
He was retired from the military after serving 24 years. He served in the Army for three years and 21 years in the Air Force. He was a member of the VFW Post in Judice.
Pallbearers were Scott Dunbar, Jody Fontenot, DAnny Pippin, Marty Gaspard, Ricky Foreman, and Bryce Lyons.
Special thanks to the doctors and the sixth floor nurses at Southwest Medical Center and Hospice of Acadiana.
