Rachel Nix, 80
Services for Rachel Nix, age 80, were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003 at Southern Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Joey Bignar and Randy Lee officiating. Burial was in the Antioch Cemetery in Quitman under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Mrs. Nix died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003 at Lincoln General Hospital in Ruston following a short illness.

Mrs. Nix was a retired sales clerk and a member of Crescent Chapter No. 64, Order of the Eastern Star in Jonesboro.

Mrs. Nix was preceded in death by her parents, William and Sarah Dupree; husband, J.T. Nix; brothers, Wilfred “Buck” Dupree, James Dupree and George Dupree.

Mrs. Nix is survived by sons, John Nix and wife Annelie of Houston and James Nix and wife Patsy of Jonesboro; brothers, Clyde Dupree of Laurel, Miss., Ray Dupree of Bastrop; sisters, Bert Turner of Oak Grove and Kathernine May of St. Joseph; granddaughters, Michelle Coleman and husband Roy of Jonesboro and Leslie Heard and husband Ken of Natchitoches; step-grandchildren, Arash Panahi, Andreas Panahi and Jenny Panahi; great-grandchildren, Bridget Coleman, Wesley Coleman, Zachary Heard, Emily Heard and Noah Heard.

Pallbearers were Larry Dupree, Bill Turner, Bob May, Larry May and Steve Dupree.

Roberts
James Roberts, 59
Funeral services for James Charlie Roberts, 59, of Saline were held Oct. 13 at the Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Stuart Toms and Warren Maxwell officiating. Burial followed in the Carolina Cemetery.

Mr. Roberts died Oct. 11 at the LSU Medical Center.He was born April 17, 1944 in Saline.

Mr. Roberts was preceded in death by three brothers, Durwood Roberts, Clinton Roberts and Ezra Roberts; and one sister, Christine Bobbitt.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Roberts of Saline; daughters, Audra Rena Jones and husband Shannon of Choudrant, Betty June Roberts of Shreveport and Tammy Marie Roberts of Fort Carson, Colo.; sisters, Aline Brown of Saline, Ruby Morgan of Saline, Marie Simpson and husband Gerald of ElDorado, Ark. and Julie Bourquin and husband Jim of San Antonio; brothers, Kenneth “Bum” Roberts of Saline and Billy Roberts and wife Janice of Saline; three grandchildren, Jessica Nicole Jones of Choudrant, James Richard Jones of Choudrant and John Christopher Hood of Saline.

Honorary pallbearer was Ronnie Williams.

Pallbearers were Carl Johnson , Kenneth Collinsworth, Johnny Hood, Jimmy Rogers, Michael Taylor and Harold Joe Johnson .

Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.

Walker
Howard Walker, 68
Funeral services for Howard Doyle Walker, 68, of Jackson , La. were held Oct. 11 at the Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Malcolm Self officiating. Burial followed in the Jonesboro Cemetery.

Mr. Walker died Oct. 8 in Baton Rouge.

Born Nov. 13, 1934 in Jonesboro, he was a veteran of the United States Army and the Korean War.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles B. Walker and Wilma Smelley Walker; one sister, Charlyne Langton; and brother-in-law, Robert H. Langton.

He is survived by sisters, Maxine Walker Black and husband Donald of Bossier City and Janis Walker Foster and husband Bobby Ray of Benton; brothers, Ollie Walker and wife Martha of Palacios, Texas and Charlie Dean Walker of Bossier City; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Kenneth Brown, Dalton Robinson, Billy Pipes, Travis Hall, Jimmy Rogers and Bobby Joe Folks.

Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.

Walters
Mildred Walters, 91
Memorial services for Mildred Estella Walters, 91, of Saline were held at the Carolina Baptist Church on Oct. 15 with the Rev. Warren Maxwell officiating.

Mrs. Walters died Oct. 5 at Jackson Parish Hospital.

Born July 13, 1912 in Harshman, Ohio, she was a housewife.

She is survived by daughter, Donna Harper and husband Billy of Saline; son, Donald Walters and wife Felita of Tampa, Fla.; sister, Georgia Anna Stewart of Dayton, Ohio; brother, Rupert King of Cleveland, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.

Durbin
Travis Durbin, 56
Funeral services for Travis Carl Durbin, 56, of Dodson were held Oct. 2 at the Yankee Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Carl Barr officiating. Burial followed in the Yankee Springs Cemetery in Goldonna.

Mr. Durbin died Sept. 29 at the LSU Medical Center.

Born Sept. 23, 1947 in Jonesboro, he was a self-employed auto repairman who loved to spend time fishing and hunting.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Frankie Durbin.

He is survived by his wife, Liz Durbin of Dodson; son, Stacey Durbin of Doyline; and one granddaughter.

Pallbearers were Brandon Crow, Daniel Marze, Alan Martin and John Ross.

Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.

Knox
Otis Knox, 73
Funeral services for Otis Thomas “O.T.” Knox were held Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003 at the Union Star Missionary Baptist Church with the Revs. Craig W. Williams and Nathan J. Leonard officiating. Burial followed in the Union Star Missionary Baptist Cemetery.

Mr. Knox died Aug. 1.Born June 26, 1930, Mr. Knox was self-employed in the pulpwood business. A member of Union Star Missionary Baptist Church, he was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish.Mr. Knox was preceded in death by his parents, Sammie Lee Cottingham and John Spencer Knox; sisters, Poneva Thomas and Mary Sue Kimble; and brothers, Amos Knox and Edsell “S.L” Booker.

Mr. Knox is survived by his wife of 48 years, Daisy Lee Patterson Knox of Jonesboro; daughters, Carolyn Marie Bradford Jennings, Jocelyn V. Knox Wyatt and husband Kevin and Vickie L. Knox Booker and husband Larry, all of Jonesboro; 13 grandchildren, Louis Jennings Jr. and wife Marla of California; Nathan J. Leonard and wife Veronica of Plano, Texas ; Ebony Jennings of California, Nangawaya B. Booker and wife Rachael of Yuma, Ariz., Chasity N. Jennings of Ruston, Carlos A. Leonard of Jackson , La., Johannes A. Booker of Tallahassee, Fla., Keema O. Booker, Andre J. Leonard, Terral D. Allen, Shantel A. Allen, Whitley S. Leonard and Joseph V. Leonard, all of Jonesboro; sisters, Oreva K. Johnson and Claudia Dean Bryant and husband Charlie of Los Angeles, Gloria K. Joe and husband Lee Edward of Jonesboro, Geneva J. Graham and husband Michael of Rialto, Calif and Mary L. Joe and husband Eddie of Baton Rouge; four sisters-in-law, Minnie Johnson and husband Alex of Oakland, Calif., Thelma Smith and husband Gus of Houston, Clydia Calhoun of Jonesboro and Fran Flowers and husband Herman of Chamblee, Ga.; brothers, Cleotis Knox of Jonesboro and John Junior Knox and wife Marie of Bienville; one brother-in-law, Elton “E.L.” Patterson of Jonesboro; god-daughter, Phyllis Taylor of Ruston; special nephew, Joe Nathan Blankenship of Covington, Ga.; special neighbor, Jessie Roy Jackson ; special friend and former son-in-law, Irvin A. Leonard of Jonesboro; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services were under the direction of Patterson Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Shively
Vermelle Shively, 82
Funeral services for Vermelle Chandler Shively, age 82, of Hodge were held Oct. 4, 2003 at the Southern Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Stuart Toms and Charles Hammons officiating. Burial followed in the Siloam Cemetery in Gansville.

Mrs. Shively, formerly of Winnfield and most recently of Hodge, died Oct. 1 at Jackson Parish Hospital following a lengthy illness.

She was a retired sales clerk.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Leroy Shively, and numerous siblings.

She is survived by daughters, Barbara Harvey and husband Harold of Quitman, Lynda Garner and husband Douglas of Hodge and Clara Evans and husband Donnie of Bossier City; son, Hayward Shively of Quitman; sisters, Gladys Taylor of Dodson and Beulah Barnes of Shreveport; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Honorary pallbearer was Jason Shively.

Pallbearers were Edward Garner, Tracy Garner, Greg Garner, Ken Garner, Mikel Evans and Lynn Taylor .

Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Diabetes Association or the charity of your choice.

Services were under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Britt
Gladys Britt, 74
Services for Gladys Virginia Britt, 74, were held at 2 p.m., Friday, Sept. 26, 2003 at the Old Saline Baptist Church with Reverends Calvin Hubbard, Stuart Toms and V.L. Montgomery officiating. Burial was in the Old Saline Cemetery under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Mrs. Britt died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003 at Lincoln General Hospital in Ruston following a short illness. Visitation was held Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003 a Old Saline Baptist Church.

Mrs. Britt was a retired teacher, having taught English and Music for over 20 years at several schools including Saline, Goldonna and Readheimer. She also served as the first Bienville Parish Librarian and was a published poet. She was a member of the Old Saline Baptist Church.

Serving as pallbearers were: Mark Johnson , Mel Johnson , Johnny Lawrence, Kenneth Herron, Brian Britt, Joel Britt and Jeremy Douglas.

Mrs. Britt is survived by her husband, Leland H. Britt; sons, William Britt and wife Betty and David Britt and wife Sue, all of Saline; daughter, Judy McNeely and husband Charles of DeRidder; brother, Ervin Lawrence and wife Lorene of Mt. Olive; sister, Linda Johnson and husband S.N. of Readheimer; grandchildren, Joel Britt, Nicholas Britt, Shawn Britt, Brian Britt, Jason Douglas, Jeremy Douglas, Daphne McNeely and Jahala McNeely; six great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Kelley
Daniel Kelley, 72
Funeral services for Daniel Eugene Kelley, 72, of Jefferson ville, Ind. were held Sept. 24 at the Hodge United Pentecostal Church with the Rev. Jeff Stroud officiating. Burial followed in the Hodge Cemetery.Mr. Kelley died Sept. 21 at his home.

Born May 21, 1931 in Atlanta, La., he was a retired bank supervisor.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Kelley of Jefferson ville; daughter, Deborah Cooley of Jefferson ville; sister, Minnie Coleman and husband Paul of Hodge; grandchildren, Joshua Douglas Cooley and Stephen James Cooley; and great-grandchildren, Nathan Wayne Cooley, Michael Donavan Cooley, Austin Jeffrey Cooley, Anthony Cooley and Andrew Cooley.

Pallbearers were Mike Kennedy, Butch Porter, Phillip Coleman, Roy Coleman, Mike Kelley and Jimmy Culpepper.

Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.
