Barbara Quarles, 73
Funeral services for Barbara “Bobbie” Thomas Quarles, 73, of Hodge were held Sept. 29 at the First Baptist Church with the Revs. Drs. Herb Dickerson and Matthew Wohlfarth and Charles Day Quarles III, officiating. Burial followed in the Gayla Traina Cemetery.

Mrs. Quarles died Sept. 26 at St. Francis Medical Center.Born April 21, 1930 in Homer, Ga., she was a homemaker.

She was a graduate of Madison High School and the University of Georgia. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jonesboro and was active in the prayer room. She was a member of the Jonesboro Study Guild and the Garden Club and was on the board of directors for the Jackson Parish Museum. Mrs. Quarles loved life and had a deep affection for the people of Jonesboro and Hodge.

She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Day Quarles Jr.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Lynn Quarles of Marietta, Ga.; sons, Howard Thomas Quarles and wife Mary of Hodge and the Rev. Charles Day Quarles III and wife Alice of Jackson ville, N.C.; brother, Chester Thomas and wife Joyce of Madison, Ga.; and grandchildren, Howard Thomas Quarles Jr., Amy Nicole Quarles, Jonathon Day Quarles and Matthew Brewton Quarles.

Pallbearers were Donnie Breihn, Wade Wright, Chet Thomas, Jimmy Rogers and Bobby Emerson.Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.

Walker
Estell Walker, 76
Funeral services for Estell Hanes Walker, 76, of Jonesboro were held Sept. 26 at the Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Loyd Sowers officiating. Burial followed in the Gayla Traina Cemetery.

Mrs. Walker died Sept. 24 at the Glenwood Medical Center.

Born May 27, 1927 in Goldonna, she was a homemaker.

She is survived by daughters, Judy Andrews and husband Roger of Monroe and Gay Maxwell and husband Sonny of Jonesboro; son, Tommy Walker of Daytona Beach, Fla.; sister, Ruby Terral of Alexandria; grandchildren, Ashley Walker, Margeaux Walker, Tiffany Walker, Heather Howard Vines and husband Kevin, Van Andrews and Scott Andrews; great-grandchildren, Antonio Walker, Mason Andrews, Brandon Andrews and Amanda Andrews.

Honorary pallbearers were Jerry Hanes, Chad Huckaby and Bruce Rogers.

Pallbearers were Tim Bryan, Terry Carr, Danny Hanes, Elmer Hanes, Wayne Carpenter and Bob Losey.

Funeral services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.

Garris
Susan Garris, 22
Funeral services for Susan Alaina Garris, 22, were held Friday, Sept. 12 at the First Baptist Church in Jonesboro, Louisiana under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Jonesboro Cemetery. The service was officiated by Pastor Stephen Ramsey. Susie passed Sunday, Sept. 7 at 11:42 a.m. north of Waco, Texas due to a tire failure, which caused the automobile accident.

Born in Denver, Colo., July 20, 1981, Susan resided for the last 19 years in Edmond, Okla. She was a senior at the University of Oklahoma in Norman in pursuit of a degreed major in both Communications and Anthropology. Susan was a very outgoing and energetic young lady and excelled in the field of sports, especially basketball while attending Edmond North High School located in Edmond, Okla.

Her maternal grandfather, Perry Ramsey and her paternal aunt, Gloria Susan Garris, precede her in death. Survivors include her father, Steven Rai Garris of Houston, Texas ; mother, Brenda Joy Roddy of Edmond, Okla.; and brother, Steven Ryan Garris of College Station, Texas . Additional survivors include her stepmother, Raquel O. Garris of Houston, Texas ; stepfather, David Allen Roddy of Edmond, Oklahoma ; paternal grandparents, Sue and I.S. Garris of Ansley, Louisiana ; maternal grandmother, Louise Ramsey of Spearsville, Louisiana and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Pallbearers were C.C. Garris, David Ramsey, Jerry Cockerham, Mark Ramsey, Matt Gleason and Marc Gleason.

Susie was loved and respected by many friends because she touched so many lives. She will be greatly missed.

Heard
James Heard, 81
Funeral services were held for James Hewell Heard Sr. on Monday, Sept. 15 at the Hodge Baptist Church with the Rev. Dwayne Boudreaux officiating. Mr. Heard Passed away on Sept. 12 after a brief illness. interment was in the Gayla Traina Cemetery in Jonesboro. If desired, memorials may be sent to the Hodge Baptist Church Building Fund, PO Drawer 340, Hodge, LA 71247.Hewell was born in Alexandria on Jan. 7, 1922, and graduated from Ruston High School. His attendance at Louisiana Polytechnic Institute was interrupted by World War II and service in the Army Air Corps, 8th Air Force, 95th Bomb Group. Hewell served as a navigator on a B-17G Flying Fortress, flying 35 combat missions in the European Theater. He was a member of the exclusive Caterpillar Club, having saved his life by parachute.

He married Helen Wingert in 1944 while stationed in Rapid City, S.D. After he was discharged in 1945, he resumed his studies at Tech and graduated in 1947 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Hewell moved his family to Hodge in 1950, where he supervised the power plant for the Continental Can paper mill, later known as Stone Container, for 37 years. He also served in the Air Force Reserve for 20 years and retired with the rank of major.

Hewell loved to read and to increase his knowledge on a wide variety of subjects. His almost flawless memory was amazing to everyone who knew him, and he was always eager to share what he had learned. He was an avid fan of old movies and the Lady Techsters basketball team.

Hewell was preceded in death by his parents, Francis H. and Bessie Welch Heard, his brother Ragan Heard and his wife Helen Wingert Heard. He is survived by two sons, James H. “Jimmy” Heard Jr. and his wife Patricia of Hodge and Michael F. Heard and his wife Jo Ann of St. Louis, Mo.; one daughter, Robin E. Heard of Camp Hill, Penn.; one brother, Jarrell “Jerry” Heard of Minden; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Richard Johnson , Wilfred Foster, Robert Gaulden, Barry Doner, Travis Hall and Robert Lynn Harvey. Honorary pallbearers were John Hamilton, Ron Piper, Allan Beers and Troy Moore.

Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.

Thompson
Shirley Thompson, 78
Funeral services for Shirley J. Lutter Thompson, 78, of Jonesboro were held Wednesday, Sept. 17 at the Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Stewart Sherman officiating. Burial followed in the Gayla Traina Cemetery.

Mrs. Thompson died Sept. 14 at St. Francis Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

Born Sept. 5, 1925 in Lake Andes, S.D., she was a retired registered nurse from the Louisiana Department of Public Health. She was a member of the Jonesboro United Methodist Church. She was an avid bridge player.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Thompson. She and her husband were former owners of Edmonds Funeral Home in Jonesboro.

Mrs. Thompson is survived by one son, David W. Thompson and wife Velma of Jonesboro; daughter, Terry L. Kohler and husband Glynn of Lake Charles; sister, Maxine Lingscheit of Miller, S.D.; grandsons, Brad Kohler of Lake Charles and Kimble Lee Thompson of Jonesboro.

Pallbearers were M.H. Walker, Eddie Gatlin, Kent McBride, Wade McBride, Joey Earle and Donnie Knox.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Jackson Parish Library, 614 Polk Avenue, Jonesboro, LA 71251; or The Jonesboro United Methodist Church, 402 4th, Jonesboro, LA 71251.

Harvey
Theron Harvey, 85
Funeral services for Theron Lee Harvey, 85, of Jonesboro were held Sept. 9 at the Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Tyler officiating. Burial followed in the Jonesboro Cemetery.

Mr. Harvey died Sept. 6 at Lincoln General Hospital.

Born April 26, 1918 in Quitman, he was a retired security guard and a veteran.

He is survived by his son, David Lynn Harvey and wife Helen of Ruston; step-daughter, Carolyn J. Davis and husband Danny of Jonesboro; step-sons, Thomas N. Jones and wife Vickie of Quitman, Bobby Dean Jones of Ruston and Jimmy Jones and wife Karen of Quitman; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Brian Harvey, Frederick Harvey, Joseph Jones, Daniel Jones, Johnathan Jones and Eddie Wayne Harvey.

Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.

Diffey
Ernest Diffey, 83
Funeral services for Ernest Timothy Diffey, 83, of Hodge were held Sept. 5 at the Hodge United Pentecostal Church with the Rev. Jeff Stroud officiating. Burial followed in the Anitoch Cemetery in Quitman.

Mr. Diffey died Sept. 2 in Lincoln General Hospital.

Born Nov. 9, 1919 in Choudrant, Mr. Diffey was a retired operator for the Continental Can Company.

Mr. Diffey was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Hodges Diffey.

He is survived by daughters, Barbara Kelley and husband Bennie of Hodge, Ernestine Bolls of Hodge, Shirley Fields and husband Carl of Derry, N.H. and Katie Harrison and husband Jimmy of Quitman; sister, Dorothy Duty of Hodge; brother, Burlon Diffey of Jonesboro; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Honorary Pallbearers were great-grandsons. Pallbearers were grandsons.

Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.

Garris
Susan Garris, 23
Susan Alaina Garris, 23, of Edmond, Okla. died Sunday, Sept. 7 in Waco, Texas as the result of a car accident. She was a senior at the University of Oklahoma in Norman. She is survived by her father, Steven Rai Garris of Houston; mother, Brenda Joy Roddy of Edmond; and brother, Steven Ryan Garris of College Station, Texas . She is also survived by her stepmother, Raquel Olmos Garris of Houston, and stepfather, Dave Roddy of Edmond. In addition, she is survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Paternal grandparents are Sue and I.S. Garris of Ansley. Maternal grandparents are Louise Ramsey of Spearsville and the late Perry Ramsey. Services are pending through Edmonds Funeral Home in Jonesboro.

Loe
Winston Loe, 89
Funeral services for Winston Woodrow Loe Sr., 89, of Quitman were held Sept. 7 at the Sweetwater Baptist Church with the Rev. Stuart Toms officiating. Burial followed in the Sweetwater Cemetery.

Mr. Loe died Sept. 5 at Forest Haven Nursing Home.

Born Jan. 12, 1914 in Quitman, he was a retired welder and a veteran.

He is survived by daughters, Charlotte Hanes and husband Jerry of Quitman and Lawanda McFearin and husband Dallas Jr. of Quitman; son, Winston W. Loe Jr. of Minden; sister, Dee Pardue of Quitman; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Woody Loe, Stu Toms Jr., Mark McFearin, Mark Caraway, Eric Willis and Denny Schufft.

Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.
