Maisy Thibodeaux
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 9, 2004, in Duhon Funeral Home, a pastor from Jennings officiating, for Maisy Thibodeaux, 87 of Morse, who died at 10:45 a.m. Friday, May 7, 2004, in Crowley’s American Legion Hospital.
Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery in Crowley.
He is survived by one daughter and her husband, Miriam and Joseph Reese, Crowley; one son and his wife, Ervert and Patsy Thibodeaux, Lafayette; one sister, Vera Istre, Crowley; a surviving spouse, Allie Broussard Thibodeaux; five grandchildren, Abby Askin, Carmen Welch, Arlene Reese, Jacqueline Hodges, and Jimmy Thibodeaux; one great-grandchild, Grant Askin.
Pallbearers were Joseph Reese, Lyn Askin, Jimmy Thibodeaux, Harry Romero, James Romero and Kurt Trahan. Honorary pallbearer was Chris Davy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Euphemon Thibodeaux and Alex Roy; one brother, Matthew Thibodeaux; and one sister, Etis Broussard.
Mr. Thibodeaux was a farmer in the Morse Community for 40 years.

Joseph (Red) Meche
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 13, 2004, in the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Bill Hudson officiating, for Joseph (Red)Meche, 69, of Mire, who died at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, May 11, 2004, in Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette.
Visitation will continue until time of services.
He is survived by his wife, Agnes Meche, Mire; four sons and their wives, Archie and Melissa Meche, Rayne, Sammy and Karrie Meche, Duson, Jessie and Cynthia Meche, Church Point, and Brian Meche and Melinda Soileau, Port Barre; three daughters and their spouses, Nancy and Gilbert Garcia, Scott, Yvonne And Daniel Breaux, Mire, and Debra Meche, Church Point; three stepsons, Terry and Mary Richard, Mire; Ricky Richard, Lafayette, and Michael Loria, Mire; one stepdaughter, Angela and Chris Ardoin, Mire; 20 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, Curley Meche, Rayne; and four sisters, Pearlie Hebert, Crowley, L:illian LeJeune, Mamou, Alice Duhon and Alida Cormier, Carencro.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis Meche and Collise Meche; one sister, Loudie Langreaux; two brothers, Joseph E. and Dozitae Meche.
He received awards for 30 years of service with Fleming. He loved to play the steel guitar with the Lafayette Playboys.
Pallbearers will be Sammy Meche, Jessie Meche, Bryan Meche, Dallas Hebert, Eugene Lalonde, and Gilbert Garcia.

Effie Cahanin Johnson
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 3, 2004, in Assumption Catholic Church in Mire, with Msgr. Russell Harrington officiating, for Mrs. Effie Cahanin Johnson , 84, of Port Arthur, Texas , who died at 8:49 a.m. Friday, April 30, 2004, in Crowley’s AmericanLegion Hospital.
A rosary was prayed Sunday, May 2, at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.
Burial was in Assumption Cemetery in Mire.
She is survived by two sons and their wives, Leland and Stelly Johnson , Houston, Texas , and Lewis and Neva Johnson , Port Arthur, Texas ; one brother, Clement Chanin, Lebell, Texas ; four grandchildren, Lee Johnson , Therese Wilkerson, Monica Whitehead, and Chad Johnson ; and eight great-grandchildren, Jessica Lejeune, Blake Lejeune, Bryce Lejeune, Spencer Johnson , Hannan Johnson , Amanda Wilkinson, David Wilkinson, and Preston Johnson .
She was preceded in death by her husband, Levy Johnson ; her parents, Aymre Larive and Joseph Cahanin; six brothers, Aristide (Pete), Ernest, Marshall, Louis Ward, Emile ( White ), and Walter Cahanin,; and two sisters, Eua Mathews and Corine Benoit.
She was a native of Mire Community and a resident of Port Arthur, Texas . She was a member of St. Theresa Little Flower Catholic Church in Port Arthur.

Rosa Bell Breaux Abshire
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 3, 2004, in St. John the Baptist Church in Lyons Point, with Father Donald Pousson officiating, for Rosa Bell Breaux Abshire, 81, of Midland, who died at 3:40 p.m. Friday, April 30, 2004, at Crowley Guest Home.
A rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.
Burial was in Abshire Cemetery in rural Kaplan.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Clarence Abshire, Sr., Midland; two daughters and their husband, Dolores and Morris Matthews and Stella and Warren Guidry, all of Crowley; three sons and their wives, Clarence and Linda Abshire, Jr., Sulphur, Edward Abshire, Sr., Mire, and Howard and Cynthia Abshire, Gueyday; one brother, Clifton Breaux, Egan; 16 grandchildren and their spouses, Monica M. and Jackie Taylor , Tony and Tina Matthews, Ronda B. and Mark Richard, Bryan and Linda Guidry, Christy and Jared David, Christy A. and Jason Godfrey, Angie A. Rios, Casey Abshire, Marty and Leslie Gaspard, Edward Abshire, Jr., Misti Abshire, Christopher and Stehanie Abshire, Heath Abshire, Caitlyn Abshire, Nadine and Randy Lepretre, and Jody and Jonathan Mayer; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers included Christopher Abshire, Heath Abshire, Tony Matthews, Edward Abshire, Jr., Marty Gaspard, and Casey Abshire.
Mrs. Abshire was preceded in death by her parents and 10 siblings. She wa a lifelong member of St. Aloysius Church in Midland, where she belonged to the Altar Society.

Edith Derouen Andrews
Funeral services were held at 9 a.m. Wednesday , May 5, 2004, in the Duhon Funeral Home Chapel here, with Father Bill Ruskoski officiating, for Edith Derouen Andrews, 88, of Rayne, who died at 12:40 a.m. Monday, May 2, 2004, in the Rayne Guest Home.
A rosary was recited at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel Tuesday.
Burial was in St. Peter Cemetery in New Iberia.
She is survived by one son and his wife, Arthur and Lois Veasey, Rayne; and one grandson and his wife, Randal and Jennifer Veazey, Baton Rouge.
Mrs. Edith was preceded in death by her parents, Leonce and Luie Derouen; one son, Jay Roy Vaezey; her first husband, Leonard Veazey; one brother, Didier Derouen; and her second husband, Oakley Andrews.

William ‘Bill” Redlich
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 5, 2004 in St. Michael Catholic Church, with Father Gary Schexnyder officiating, for William “Bill”Redlich, 87, of Houston, Texas , who died Sunday, May 2, 2004, at the Tomball Regional Hospital in Tomball, Texas .
A rosary was prayed at 6:30 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.
Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Crowley.
He is survived by his wife, Margie Dupuis Redlich, Houston, Texas ; two daughters, Sybil and Ken Jurica and Jackye Spell, all of Houstonl two brothers, Hank Redlich and Dago Redlich, both of Crowley; three sisters, Lillian Campbell and Julia Hargrave, both of Lafayette, and Ethyl Leger, Rayne; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Mr. Redlich was better known as Bill or Hoss. He lived in Crowley until he left to join the U.S. Navy which he proudly served for 12 years and became a veteran of World War II as well as a member of the VFW and AmericanLegion.
Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to Crowley where he was employed by Evangeline Motors as a point and auto body specialist that took a career as an instructor at the Southwest La. Vocational Technical School from which he retired.
Bill really enjoyed life and lived it to its fullest. He was a family man and always the life of the party. He loved to tell jokes and make people laugh. He also was a musician who enjoyed singing and playing his guitar. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Alice Thibodeaux Miller
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 4, 2004, in St. Lawrence Center in Mowata, with Rev. Mr. Jim Cormier officiating, for Alce Thibodeaux Miller, 87, of Crowley, who died at 9:30 a.m . Sunday, May 2, 2004, in the Crowley Guest Home.
She is survived by one son, John Melton Miller, Sr., Crowley, three grandchildren, John Miller, Jr., Melissa Miller and Helen Dartez; and one sister, Vina Richard of Lake Charles.
Ms. Miller was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

Lee Ethel Dupont
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 3, 2005, at Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church for Lee Ethel Dupont.
Wake services will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday until the time of service.
Lee Ethel died Monday, May 30, 2005, at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Lafayette.
A native and life long resident of Rayne, Lee Ethel was a 1964 graduate of Holy Rosary Catholic School in Lafayette. She received a Bachelors of Science and a Master’s of Education from the University of Southwestern Louisiana .
Lee Ethel recently retired from the Acadia Parish School System after 35 years of service. While employed by the Acadia Parish School System she served as supervisor of Career and Technical Education, Math and Science, from 1999 until her retirement. She was responsible for all vocational, math and science programs. She coordinated all school-to-work activities; High Schools That Work, Tech Prep, PreGED/Skills programs; A-HEC Programs, Teacher Cadet Programs and all Certification programs.
She served as principal at Crowley Middle School from 1996-1999; assistant principal at Crowley Middle School from 1991-1996; assistant principal at Rayne High School from 1987-1991; a math teacher at Rayne High School from 1969-1987.
She was a member of Rayne Branch National Association of University Women, Office of Minority Affairs-Lafayette Diocese, Association of Careers and Technical Education, Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development, Louisiana Math and Science Association, Acadia Administrators’ Association, National Association of Educators, and Louisiana Association of Education.
Survivors include three brothers, Melvin (Helen), Peter Jr. (Bernice), and John (Debra) Dupont all of Rayne; one sister, Alexia (Curtis) Williams of Gramercy; one great-aunt, Mabel Adams from Houston, Texas ; three aunts, Mildred Duhon of Rayne, Mary Conway of Lake Charles and Clemintine Fontenot of Houston, Texas ; five uncles, Ashton Dupont, of California; Eldridge Dupont, Willie Dupont and Norrell Dupont from Houston, Texas ; and Charlie Dupont from Lake Charles; 13 nieces and nephews; 12 great-nieces and great-nephews; relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter Dupont, Sr. and Rosanna D. Dupont Williams; her maternal grandparents, Alex Duhon and Alice Duhon Pierre; her paternal grandparents, Emile and Lillian Dupont; and one brother, Joseph Dupont.
The Rev. Richard Wagner, S.S.J., pastor of Our Mother of Mercy Church, will be the celebrant of the Mass with interment taking place at Our Mother of Mercy Cemetery in Rayne.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Sync Funeral Home of Lafayette.

Bella Nickerson Chappuis Abramson
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at a 2 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Genevieve Catholic Church for Bella Nickerson Chappuis Abramson, age 88, who died Sunday, May 29, 2005 , at her home in Sterling Grove.
Entombment was in the Calvary Mausoleum.
The Reverend Monsignor Glen John Provost, pastor of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church was the celebrant of the Funeral Mass and conducted the funeral services. Con-Celebrants were Monsignor Reverend Harry Benefiel and Reverend Jody Simoneaux, Pastor of St. Genevieve Catholic Church.
The readings from the Old and New Testaments were read by her granddaughters, Elise Chappuis Danner and Elisabeth Kraft Cortez.
Prayer of the Faithful was led by Mrs. Richard Chappuis, Jr. and the eulogist was her daughter, Cherie Chappuis Kraft.
Giftbearers were her granddaughters, Sarah Nickerson Chappuis and Amy Louise Chappuis.
Jodi Bollich, soloist, accompanied on the organ by Tom Niel, sang for the funeral services “Ave Maria”, “Psalm 23”, “Hail Mary, Gentle Woman”, “Panis Angelicus” and “Pie Jesu”.
Bella Nickerson Chappuis Abramson, a native of Lafayette and a member of one of Southwest Louisiana ’s pioneer families was born on November 11, 1916, to Isabella Judice Nickerson and John Cameron Nickerson. Isabella Judice Nickerson was the daughter of Alcide and Anais Judice. Alcide Judice was the founder of Scott, Louisiana . John Cameron Nickerson’s father, John Cameron Nickerson, Sr., moved his family to Louisiana from Simcoe, Ontario, in 1878 and built the Nickerson home where Mrs. Abramson resided, located in Sterling Grove on the corner of Simcoe Street and Sterling Street.
Mrs. Abramson was rooted in a family tradition that always stood for excellence in education. Her grandfather, Alcide Judice, was the first president of the Lafayette Parish School Board and her uncle, Leo Judice was president of that same body for more than a quarter of a century. Leo was also the mayor of the Town of Scott. Judice Hall on the ULL Campus is named for Alcide and Leo Judice, as is Judice Middle School and L. Leo Judice Elementary School.
She shared her father’s interest in the cultivation and nurturing of beautiful camellias and azaleas and other flowering plants and trees which abound the grounds at Sterling Grove.
Mrs. Abramson graduated Valedictorian of Lafayette High School and was a cum laude graduate of Southwest Louisiana Institute, now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where she obtained a bachelor of arts degree in 1937.
While a student at SLI, she was crowned Camellia Queen in 1935. Also, she served as president of the Vermilion Honor Society which has since merged with Blue Key.
After graduation from SLI, Mrs. Abramson was employed as secretary to SLI’s Dean of Men, Rexford McCullough.
Thereafter, she married the late Colonel Richard D. Chappuis, Sr. and after the end of World War II, they established their home in Lafayette.
At this time, Mrs. Abramson embarked upon a long and devoted career of service to ULL and the community of Lafayette. After the death of Colonel Chappuis, she married Dr. Samuel “Pete” Abramson in 1985. Dr. Abramson was also an alumnus of Lafayette High School and SLI.
A long time member of the ULL Foundation, Mrs. Abramson served on its Board of Directors and its Activities Committee for many years. For 17 years, she served on the ULL Arts Center committee and chaired the fundraising arm of that committee. She was a faithful sustainer of the ULL Foundation’s Honor Roll. Because of her generous donations, each year the tuition of a deserving secondary education student is paid. A spirited supporter of ULL athletics, crisp fall afternoons found her cheering the Ragin Cajuns‚ football team. Over the years, Mrs. Abramson has made numerous contributions to the ULL President’s Club, the University Art Museum, the Eminent Scholar Trust Fund, the Dupre’ Library Fund and the Distinguished Professor Awards.
In 1984, Mrs. Abramson was requested by Lafayette’s Mayor to become a member of the Board of Directors of the Lafayette Centennial Commission. She also served on the Mayor’s Welcoming and Reception Committee for the visit of French President and Mrs. Valery Giscard D’ Estaing.
Mrs. Abramson was a charter member of the Service League of Lafayette, which later became the Junior League of Lafayette. She participated as vice-president of that organization and chaired many of its fundraising events. In 1963, as a member of the Service League, Mrs. Abramson organized and helped write the first televised French education program in the area, “Dites Moi”, which ran for two years.
Another area of service to which Mrs. Abramson was devoted was the Greater Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association. A charter member of the Ladies Committee of that Association, she served as its chairman for a number of years. She also served on the board of directors of the Association and was a member of both the Sponsor and Fundraising Committees. Her love of Mardi Gras emanated from her reign as Queen Evangeline IV in the Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras Association Ball in 1937.
Mrs. Abramson was honored for her many contributions to Lafayette’s Mardi Gras by being chosen Parade Marshall of the King Gabriel’s Parade in 1990.
Aided by her strong Catholic faith, Mrs. Abramson was a staunch supporter of the Catholic Church and Catholic education. She was a member of St. Genevieve Catholic Church Congregation for most of her life, served on the board of trustees of St. Thomas More Catholic High School Foundation, as well as the Board of Directors of Our Lady Fatima Foundation.
Mrs. Abramson was devoted to the Carmelite Monastery, serving as member of the Carmelite Angels. In 1995, she was honored to be chosen as Queen of the Bishop’s Charity Ball for her many services to the church and the community.
Her further contributions to the Lafayette community are borne out by her membership on the Board of Directors of the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra Association and the Board of Directors of the Acadiana Arts Council for many years. She was a member of Downtown Lafayette Unlimited, the Lafayette Historical Association, CODOFIL, the Performing Arts Society of Acadiana, and the Lafayette Natural History Museum and Planetarium as well as the Good Neighbor Council.
Mrs. Abramson was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and her greatest joy was being surrounded by her family.
She is survived by two sons, Richard D. Chappuis, Jr. and his wife, Teeta and John N. Chappuis and his wife, Colleen; a daughter, Cherie Chappuis Kraft and her husband, Ralph; her grandchildren, Richard D. Chappuis, III and his wife, Shana; Elise Chappuis Danner and her husband, Dwayne; Cameron C. Chappuis and his wife, Amy; Elisabeth Kraft Cortez and her husband, David; Scott Brantley Chappuis, Sarah Nickerson Chappuis and Amy Louise Chappuis; her step-grandchildren, Catherine Rose Rountree and her husband, Gordon; Christine Helen Cook and her husband, Christopher; her great grandchild, Cecile Cameron Chappuis and her step- great-grandchildren, Elliott and Rose Rountree and Catherine and Christopher Cook, Jr.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Colonel Richard D. Chappuis, Sr. After Colonel Chappuis‚ death, she married Dr. Samuel “Pete” Abramson, who also predeceased her. She was also preceded in death by one son, Edward Randolph Chappuis; her parents, Isabella Judice Nickerson and John Cameron Nickerson; one sister, Lucille Nickerson Vennard and two brothers, John Cameron Nickerson and Alcide Judice Nickerson.
The family wishes to acknowledge the devotion of the long-time caretakers of her home, Gustavia McZeal and Howard Charles and the loving attention given to her by caregivers Virginia Broussard, Mary Andrus, Betty Hebert and Goldie Thibodeaux.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Ronald Jenkins, Dr. Michael Mounir, Dr. Norman Anseman, Dr. Harold Chastant, Rusty Reed, R.P.T. and the Staff of Hospice, especially nurses Donna Vidrine and Kelly Zaunbrecher for the excellent medical services they provided.
Pallbearers were Richard Dudley Chappuis III, Cameron Charles Chappuis, Scott Brantley Chappuis, Ralph Edward Kraft, Glenn David Cortez Jr., R. Dwayne Danner and Roland Delahoussaye.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in the name of Bella Nickerson Chappuis Abramson to Hospice of Acadiana, 2600 Johnston St., Suite 200, Lafayette, LA 70503, ULL Foundation, 705 E. St. Mary Blvd., Lafayette, LA 70503 or to the Carmelite Monastery,1250 Carmel Dr.,Lafayette,LA 70501.
A rosary was recited Sunday at 6 p.m. in the Martin & Castille Funeral Home by Rev. Msgr. Harry Benefiel.
The family requested that visiting hours be observed Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. and continued Tuesday from 10 a.m. until time of services.
