Julia Hale -- Readhimer, LA

Julia Harvelia Hale, 81, of Readhimer, LA , died Thursday, August 31, 2000 at her home in Saline, LA of natural causes. Funeral services were at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 5, 2000 at Strange Methodist Church with Elder David Godwin of the Oak Grove Primitive Baptist Church officiating.

Burial was in Strange Methodist Church Cemetery in Readhimer under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home of Winnfield. Mrs. Hale was a graduate of the old Shreveport Charity Hospital School of Nursing in 1946. She was well known for her service to the Readhimer Community.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years John Roy Hale, a son, Jerry Glen Hale, and her parents, Louis & Ellie Johnson , a brother Jerry Willard Johnson . She is survived by two sons: James Patrick Hale and wife Lavella, of Russellville, AR and Gary Monroe Hale of Saline, LA. Two granddaughters: Amy Fayette Hale of Camden, AR & Sheena Clarissa Hale of Russellville, AR. Four sisters: Isobel Hickory and Nettie Nork, both of Heber Springs, AR.; Mozelle Darsey and husband Charles, of Shreveport, LA; Louisa Fremming and husband Ben of Ruston, LA. Two brothers: Richard Johnson and wife Jessie, and Leslie Johnson and wife Marilyn all of Saline. Numerous nieces & nephews.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Strange Cemetery Association, Saline Caroline Dormon Nature Preserve, Saline, LA or the Baptist Children’s Home in Monroe, LA.

Loraine Jeffress -- Jonesboro, LA

Loraine Thomas Jeffress, 78, of Jonesboro, LA, born April 12, 1922 in Kountze, TX Passed away Monday, September 4, 2000 at the Jackson Parish Hospital.

Funeral services were Wednesday, September 6, 2000 at 10:00 a.m. at Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Roy Bryan Moore of Jonesboro United Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in Garden of Memories under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro. Mrs. Jeffress was a retired machine operator at the Bag Mill.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ralph Harding Morrow and one sister, Bernice Credeur. She is survived by her husband, Raymond Preston Jeffress of Jonesboro; one son Ralph H. Morrow, Jr. and wife Betty of Jonesboro; 3 sisters, Janice Crisco of Longview, TX., Isabelle Fogle of Houston, TX, and Margaret Odom of Beaumont, TX; 2 brothers, O. V. Thomas of Mineola, TX and Sidney Thomas of Orange, TX; 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were John Kujawa, Dale Layfield, David Harrell, Frankie Harris, Danny Bell and Shirley Branch. Honorary Pallbearers were Michael Morrow, and the Members of the Friendly Knights Sunday School Class of the Jonesboro United Methodist Church.

Nell Hughes -- Quitman, LA

Nell Hughes, 72 of Quitman, LA was born June 21, 1928 in Jonesboro, LA and Passed away Saturday, September 2, 2000 at her residence. Funeral service was Tuesday, September 5, 2000 at 10:00 a.m. at Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Danny Stevenson officiating. Burial was in Antioch Cemetery under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro, LA. Mrs. Hughes was self-employed.

She is survived by one son, Bo Bates of Quitman, LA; two daughters, Rickey Bates of Quitman, La and Nell Rose Norred and husband Jack of Jonesboro, LA; two sisters, Betty Duck and husband J.W. of Quitman and Alice Faye Mangum and husband Johnny of Memphis, TN; four brothers, Jerry W. Stevenson and wife Lillian, John Russell (Rusty) Stevenson and wife Karen, L.C. (Bud) Stevenson and wife Alice Ann all of Quitman, LA and Troy T. Stevenson and wife Kaye of Tucson, AZ; 7 Grandchildren: Stacey Wilkerson, Todd Lowe, Amy Lowe, Stephanie Brown, Jackie Norred, Cindy Ingram, & Chad Bates ; and 9 Great Grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Robert Stevenson, Patrick Duck, Randel Stevenson, J.W. Duck, Donnie Horton, Buddy Stevenson, Johnny Mangum, M.H. Walker, Henry Runyon, and John Ross.

Hubie Bryant -- Shreveport, LA

Hubie Hilton Bryant, 91 of Shreveport, LA was born July 24, 1909 Passed away Wednesday, August 30, 2000 at Christus Schumport. Graveside service was at Mt. Olive West Saturday, September 2, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Frank Breithaupt officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olive West Cemetery under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro, LA. Mr. Bryant was a fireman.

He is survived by one daughter, Delores Sutton of Shreveport, LA; 3 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Ethel Mae Weeks -- Quitman, LA

Ethel Mae Weeks, 72 of Quitman, LA born March 28, 1928 Passed away Friday, September 1, 2000 at Jackson Parish Hospital. Funeral services were Monday, September 4, 2000 at 10:00 a.m. at Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Perry Lassiter officiating. Burial was in Walnut Ridge Cemetery under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Mrs. Weeks was a retired Weston High School Teacher. She was a very avid genealogist and love the work around her home and woods. She was preceded in death by her husband Wilburn Carrell Weeks. The family requests memorials be made to the Jackson Parish Library.

She is survived by one daughter, Kathy Earle and husband Bob of Greeley, CO; one son, W.C. "Bill" Weeks and wife Christie of Jonesboro, LA; one brother, Jack Freeman and wife Willa of Natchitoches, LA; one sister, Mary Freeman Mann and husband Horace of Keithville, LA; five grandchildren, Stephen Weeks, Paul Weeks, Carrell Weeks, Andrew Weeks, and Katie Weeks; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Andrew Weeks, Paul Weeks, Stephen Weeks, Tim Freeman, Eddie Mann, and Karl Mann.

Thelma Smith -- Arcadia, LA

Thelma Lois Smith, 69, of Arcadia, LA was born May 25, 1931 in Clanton, AL and Passed away Wednesday, November 22, 2000 at Schumpert Medical Center. Funeral services were Saturday, November 25, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. at Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Robert Tyler, Rev. E D Morris and Rev. Charles Lutrick officiating. Burial was in Driskill Mountain Cemetery in Bienville, LA under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro, LA. Mrs. Thelma was a Homemaker.

She leaves to cherish her memory: her husband of 50 years, J. D. Smith of Arcadia; 2 sons, J. D. Smith, Jr. and wife Kitty of Bossier City and David Smith and wife Becki of Plain Dealing; 2 daughters, Margaret Waits and husband Ray and Brenda Antee and husband Shane all of Arcadia; 1 sister, Ruby Lewis and husband W. J. of Minden; 10 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her sister Loretta Jones of Gonzales, LA. Her nephews served as pallbearers.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Alan Webb, Dr. Lloyd Whitley and the staff of the 4th floor at Schumpert Hospital for their loving care of our "Ma". Memorials may be made to Mt. Olive Baptist Church Building Fund, 794 Bear Creek Rd., Quitman, LA 71268.

Susan Anthony -- Jonesboro, LA

Susan Gueydan Anthony, 87, of Jonesboro, Passed away Monday, November 20, 2000 in Jonesboro of natural causes. Mrs. Anthony was a resident of Sunbridge Jackson Manor for 7 years. Memorial service was at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, November 26, 2000 at Sunbridge Jackson Manor Nursing Home with Chris Gueydan officiating. Burial was in Hope Mausoleum in New Orleans, LA under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Mrs. Anthony is survived by: 1 son, Edmond Gueydan and wife Frances of New Orleans, LA; 1 daughter-in-law, Gloria Gueydan of Jonesboro, LA; 9 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

Larry Smith -- Ruston, LA

Larry William Smith, 44, of Ruston, LA, died Sunday, November 26, 2000 in Goldonna, LA following a sudden illness. Funeral services were at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 29, 2000 at Kilpatrick Funeral Home Chapel of Ruston, LA with Rev. Don Doughty officiating. interment was at Brooks Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Mr. Smith was a member of the Yankee Springs Baptist Church.

He is survived by: his wife, Sue M. Smith of Ruston; 3 sons, Jan-Michael Smith, Ryan Smith of Ruston and Brad Lafollett of Little Rock, AR; his parents, Johnny W. and Alice M. Smith of Goldonna, LA and 1 sister, Connie Burbank of Farmerville, LA. Pallbearers were: Mickey Sherill, Johnny Sherill, Shannon Sparks, and Kenneth Weeks.

Rose Stewart -- Quitman, LA

Rose Melba Stewart, 67, of Quitman, LA was born June 20, 1933 at Ansley, LA and Passed away Monday, November 27, 2000 at Jackson Parish Hospital. Graveside Service was Tuesday, November 28, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. at Ansley Cemetery with Rev. Ken Klemme officiating. Burial was in Ansley Cemetery under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Ms. Stewart was a life time member of Quitman Methodist Church. She was a charter member of the Calcasieu Association of Educators where she worked at Bell City High School for 23 years as head librarian. She is survived by: 2 step brothers, Harold Stewart and Jerry Stewart of Zwolle, LA; and 3 cousins, Bobby Norman and wife Millie of Shreveport, LA, Francis Norman and wife Wanda and Sylvia Pagan and husband Perry of Quitman, LA. The Graduating class of 1952 of Quitman High School served as Honorary Pallbearers.

Travis E. Young -- Winnfield, LA

Travis E. Young, 81, of Winnfield died Sunday, November 26, 2000 in the Winn Parish Medical Center. Funeral services were Tuesday, November 28, 2000 at 11 a.m. in the Southern Funeral Home Chapel with Rev.(s) Lester Carpenter and Wallace Ingles officiating. Burial was in Zion Hill Cemetery under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Winnfield, LA. Mr. Young was a retired worker for the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development and a member of the Zion Hill Baptist Church.

He is survived by: his wife, Rosie Young of Winnfield; 2 sons, Fred Young and wife Jan of Winnfield and Travis Young and wife Cherry of Jonesboro; 2 daughters, Jeanette Young and Charlotee Young both of Winnfield; 1 sister, Odell Ashcraft of Jonesboro; 4 grandchildren, Lori Wagnon, Leah Spangler, Kevin & Mitchell Young; and 9 great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were: Kevin Young, Ronnie Wagnon, Jason Spangler, Charles Spangler, Kenneth Jordan and Jim Fordham. Honorary Pallbearers were: Marshall Jordan, R. D. Barron, Harley Austin, Arvene Spangler, and Arzell Spangler.

William Borland -- Jonesboro, LA

Mr. William Borland, 85, of Jonesboro, LA was born September 22, 1915 in Jonesboro and Passed away Monday, November 13, 2000 in Willis Knighton Hospital. Funeral services were Wednesday, November 15, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. at Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Don Doughty and Bro. Bill Moore officiating. Burial was in Garden of Memories under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Mr. Borland was a loving husband for 60 years to Mrs. Audie Fain Borland. He retired from Continental Can Company after 32 years of service and was a member and Deacon of Southside Baptist Church. He was also a veteran.

He is survived by: his wife, Audie Fain Borland of Jonesboro; 3 sisters, Lola Blundell of Shreveport, Ollie Dark and Eva Raborn of Jonesboro; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were: Emmett Blundell, Bobby Doyle Borland, Raymond Borland, Grady Brooks, Tommy Emanus, and Bobby Roberts. Honorary pallbearers were: Curtis Hogg, Bud King, and Luther Rhymes.

Lou Henderson -- Jonesboro, LA

Mommy Lou, 96, died Thursday, October 26, 2000 in Lincoln General Hospital after a brief illness. Services were held Monday, October 30, 2000 at Mt. Hebron Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Williams officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hebron Cemetery under the direction of Simmons Funeral Home of Jonesboro, LA.

Mommy Lou gave her life to Christ at an early age and was baptized at the Mt. Hebron Baptist Church where she was the oldest member of this church family. She was the daughter of the late Sam Henderson and Mary Magelene Jefferson Henderson. She was the mother of 5 lovely children which 2 preceded her in death. She leaves to cherish her memories 3 daughters, Bernice Davis & Ruth E. Henderson of Jonesboro and Odell Henderson of Ruston; a foster daughter, Jeanette Dean of Quitman; 13 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, 23 great-great grandchildren; 1 sister, Elnora McGuire of Jonesboro; 1 brother Roy Henderson of Oak Grove and many, many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was loved by everyone who knew her.

Pallbearers were: Leroy McGuire, Doug McGuire, Charles McGuire, Corbet McGuire, Jr. Billy Henderson, and Daryl Johnson . Honorary pallbearers were: Willie J. Henderson, Willie L. Henderson, W. C. Flanagan, Jr., Hargie L. Davis, Johnny R. Hicks, Anthony Davis, and Keith Henderson.

Charles Nesbit, Sr. -- Jonesboro, LA

Charles Winford "Buddy" Nesbit, Sr., 80, of Jonesboro born August 15, 1920 in Knox City, TX Passed away Monday, November 6, 2000 in Jackson Parish Hospital. Funeral services were Thursday, November 9, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. at North Hodge Assembly of God with Rev. Gene Cumpton officiating. Burial was in Jonesboro Cemetery under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home. Mr. Nesbit was a paper machine operator and a Veteran of World War II. He was also a charter member of North Hodge Assembly of God. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth; two brothers, Edgar and T. L. Nesbit; and one sister, Lillian Moon.

He is survived by: two sons, Charles W. Nesbit, Jr. and wife Catherine of Shreveport, LA and Jerry Nesbit and wife Sandra of Hodge, LA and sister-in-law, Aulena Peevy of Jonesboro, LA; 6 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Pallbearers were: Donnie Knox, Chris Nesbit, Lane Nesbit, Tony Nesbit, Duane Price, and Woody Spillers. Honorary pallbearers were: Ray Calloway, Crawford Huckaby, E. W. Roden, and Ezra Smith.

Otis "Ted" Alford -- Jonesboro, LA

Otis Kenner "Ted" Alford, 85, of Jonesboro, LA was born June 30, 1915 in Goldonna, LA and Passed away Monday, November 6, 2000 in Jackson Parish Hospital. Funeral services were Thursday, November 9, 2000 at 1:00 p.m. at Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bob Driggers officiating. Burial was in Jonesboro Cemetery under the directions of Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro. Mr. Alford was a retired bag tender.

He is survived by his wife, Artie Ethel Alford; 1 son, Delane Alford and wife Wilda; 2 daughters, Irma Ashcraft and husband Patrick, all of Jonesboro, LA, and Virginia Ann Self and husband Ronnie of Crossett, AR; 7 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren. Pallbearers were: Alan Ashcraft, Wade Ashcraft, Preston Ashcraft, Timothy Ashccraft, Doug Self, Craig Self and Matt Jacobs.

Alma McCaa -- Ruston, LA

Alma Beatrice McCaa, 92, of Ruston, LA was born February 23, 1908 in DeRidder, LA and Passed away Monday, November 6, 2000 at Alpine Guest Care Center. Funeral services were Wednesday, November 8, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. John Charles officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery in Shreveport, LA under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Mrs. McCaa was a homemaker. She was a former resident of Shreveport and was a graduate of the first class of Byrd High School in 1926. She was a former member of the Shreveport Chorale Ensemble, Broadmoor Baptist Church and Ingleside Baptist Church were she taught Sunday School to young people and adults for many years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jonesboro. She was preceded in death by her husband, William C. McCaa, Sr.

She is survived by: two daughters, Mary A. Clancy of Talco, TX, and Ladye M. Harveston and husband Joe of Jonesboro, LA; two sons, J. D. McCaa and wife Quita of Dallas, TX and W. C. McCaa, Jr. and wife Joyce of Ruston, LA; two nieces, Kay Clay of Chicago, IL and Jane German of Shreveport, LA; and one sister-in-law, Elizabeth McCaa of Shreveport, LA; 11 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Pallbearers were: Richard Holsomback, Michael McBride, Mark McCaa, Michael H. McCaa, W. C. McCaa, III, and Troy Smith.

Thomas Crozier -- Hodge, LA

Thomas Joseph Allen Crozier, Sr., 85, of Hodge, LA was born September 30, 1915 in Bath, New Brunswick, Canada and Passed away Monday, November 6, 2000 in Lincoln General Hospital. Funeral services were Thursday, November 9, 2000 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Lucy Catholic Church with Father Bob Leonhardt officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery in Ruston under the directions of Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro. Mr. Crozier was a pulp mill superintendent.

His parents moved to Portland, Maine when he was an infant. After graduating from the University of Maine, he moved to Hodge to work as a Chemist for Southern Advance Paper Company and Pulp Mill superintendent for Continental Can. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the infantry and received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah Crozier of Hodge, LA; 1 daughter, Margaret Crozier of Destin, FL; 1 son, Thomas Crozier, Jr. and wife Suzanne of Houston, TX; 4 sisters, Alice Crozier of Baltimore, ME, Mary DeCosta of Naples, FL, Helen Herzig of Colton, CA and Ann Norton of Tampa, FL; 1 brother, Francis J. Crozier of Falmouth, ME; 1 granddaughter, Emily Crozier of Houston, TX; and 1 grandson, Sean Thomas Crozier of Houston, TX. Pallbearers were: Sean Crozier, Christopher Crozier, Francis Crozier II, Gil Dowies, Mike Dowies, and Lou Charles Napper. Honorary pallbearers were John Hall, Carrell Dowies, William A. Marbury, Andy Malone, James Michaud, James Gleason, and James Fullerton.
