Funeral services were Tuesday, November 14, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. at Springhill Baptist Church under the direction of King’s Funeral Home, Inc. of Ruston, LA. Mr. Mitchell was a retired laborer.

Clifford Quarles -- Jonesboro, LA

Clifford Morrell Quarles, 78, of Jonesboro, LA was born September 22, 1922 in Union, LA and passed away Friday, November 10, 2000 at Healthsouth North LA. Rehab Hospital. Funeral service was Sunday, November 12, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. at Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charles Lutrick, and Rev. Loyd Sowers officiating. Burial was in Gayla Traina Cemetery under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro. Mr. Quarles was a retired bag finisher and an Army Veteran.

He is survived by: his wife, Sela M. Quarles of Jonesboro; 2 daughters, Linda Bryan of Jonesboro and June Deal of Bastrop; 3 sons, Clifford "Dickie" M. Quarles of Jonesboro, Douglas Quarles of Natchitoches, and Jerry L. Quarles of Hallsville, TX; 1 brother, Dalton Quarles of Hodge; 3 sisters, Mollie Cannady of Shreveport, Mildred Shackleford of Jonesboro, and Martha Walker of Freeport, TX; 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Ernest Hogan -- Jonesboro, LA

Jesse Ernest Hogan, 66, of Jonesboro, LA was born August 22, 1934 in Weston, LA and passed away Friday, November 10, 2000 at St. Francis Medical Center. Funeral services were Monday, November 13, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. at Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jesse Stripland and Rev. Marty Wright officiating. Burial was in Ebenezer Baptist Cemetery under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Mr. Hogan was a lifelong resident of Weston, LA. He had served on the Weston Water Board for several years. Mr. Hogan was retired from the Jonesboro Insurance Agency as manager after 40 years of service.

He is survived by: his wife, Kay Hogan of Jonesboro; 1 son, Ron Hogan & wife Rena’ of West Ouachita Community; 2 daughters, Donna Herring & husband, Deany of Dubach and Debbie Pender & husband Joey of Weston; 2 brothers, Bill Hogan of Quitman and Davis Hogan of West Monroe; 2 sisters, Delma Massey of Weston and Thelma Robertson of Sarepta; 4 grandchildren, Dallas Herring of Dubach, Katie Hogan and Taylor Hogan of West Ouachita Community, and Jes Pender of Weston; and a special friend, Mable Lintott of Jonesboro. Pallbearers were: Allen Hogan, Marvin Hogan, Tim Hogan, Todd Huddleston, Rickey McBride, and Charles Hogan.

Ludger J. Landry -- Harahan, LA

Ludger J. Landry of Harahan, LA passed away on November 2, 2000 at 9:15 at East Jefferson General Hospital in Metarie, LA. Mr. Landry is survived by: 1 daughter Adrienne L. Walsworth of Quitman, LA; 1 son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Marilyn Landry of Monroe, LA; 5 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter, Kelsey Marie Porter. Kelsey is the daughter of Angela and Brad Porter of Jonesboro, LA.

Lillian Thrift -- Jonesboro, LA

Lillian Maxine Thrift, 78, of Jonesboro died Friday, November 10, 2000 at Lincoln General Hospital after a short illness. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, November 12, 2000, in the Calvary Tabernacle with Rev. Richard Gray officiating. Burial was in the Jonesboro Cemetery under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Jonesboro. Mrs. Thrift was a retired sales clerk.

She is survived by: 1 daughter, Linda Durbin of Jonesboro; 2 sisters, Sally Smith of Jena, LA and Genevive Pyles of Indiana; 2 brothers, Grady Dean of Jonesboro and Jimmy Dean of Jena; 1 grandson, Brandon Durbin of Jonesboro and 1 granddaughter, Misty Durbin of Winnfield.

Jerry Littlejohn -- Parks, AR

Jerry Clyde Littlejohn, 54, of Parks, AR, died Friday, November 10, 2000 in his home of natural causes. Funeral services were at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 14, 2000 at Parks Baptist Church. Burial was at Hawkins Cemetery in Parks, AR under the direction of Martin Funeral Home of Waldron, AR. Mr. Littlejohn was a retired electronic technician, member of Parks Baptist Church & an Air Force Veteran.

He is survived by: his wife, Rosemary Littlejohn; 3 daughters, Nina Jones of Parks, AR, Hannah & Heather Littlejohn, both of The Home; 1 son, James Littlejohn of The Home; 2 brothers, Dale Littlejohn of DeQuincey, LA and Ray Littlejohn of Jonesboro, LA. Mr. Jerry Clyde Littlejohn is a former resident of Jonesboro, LA.

Ruth Anne Settles -- Chatham, LA

Ruth Anne Settles, 93, of Chatham, LA was born in Mississippi on October 7, 1907 and died Wednesday, February 28, 2001 at Glenwood Medical Center. Funeral services were at Chatham Baptist Church on Friday, March 2, 2001 at 2:00 PM with Bro. Bill Moore officiating. Burial was in Chatham Cemetery under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro. Mrs. Settles was a homemaker. She is survived by: 2 sons, James T. Higgins of Kingsland, GA and John F. Seymour of Folkston, GA; 2 nieces, Voncille Soloman of West Monroe, LA and Hazel Ward of Crowville, LA; 3 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

David Hammock -- Jonesboro, LA

Funeral services were held for David (D.L.) Hammock, Sr., Monday, February 19, 2001, 11:00 a.m. at the Travelers Rest Baptist Church in Jonesboro, LA with Pastor Zettie L. Moore, Jr., officiating. Interment was in the Travelers Rest Cemetery in Jonesboro under the direction of Winnfield Funeral Home, Winnfield, LA. David Lee Hammock, Sr. was born in Jonesboro, LA October 22, 1931. After a brief illness, he entered eternal rest on Monday, February 12, 2001 at 1:15 p.m. at Lincoln General Hospital, Ruston, LA. He was the fourth of five children born to the late Alonzo Hammock, Sr. and Kattie Lee Simpson. He was preceded in death by two brothers. He accepted Christ early in life and was baptized at the Travelers Rest Baptist Church by Reverend Killings.

He attended the public schools of Jackson Parish and graduated from Jackson High School in 1952. He was very active in sports and played football and basketball. He continued his education at Grambling State University and Alcorn University. Although he did not complete college, he was the greatest "Arm chair coach" that ever lived. D. L., as he was known throughout North Louisiana, was a happy, fun loving person who was always willing to help others. Regardless of the situation, he could always think of something to say that would add humor.

On September 19, 1965, he was married to Evelyn Janelle Sampson. They were the proud parents of three children, two boys and one girl.

For a while he was employed at Jonesboro Dry Cleaners and later was hired at Continental Can Company. He worked in the Bag Mill first and then later he went to the Pulp Mill Laboratory, where he ran tests. For thirty-three years he worked at CCC. David spent his spare time fishing, hunting, and attending sports events here and neighboring college and universities. His favorite past time was spoiling his grandchildren.

He leaves not to mourn, but to cherish the beautiful memories: a loving and devoted wife, Janelle; three daughters, Vanessa (Marvin) of Bedford, TX, Suretha Wimberly of Jonesboro, LA, and Judy Williams (Dennis) of Valdosta, GA; four sons, David Jr. (Beverly), and Deavon Kendall, both of Jonesboro, LA, Terry Wayne (Jeanie) of Ruston, LA, Billy Frank of Lake Charles, LA; two brothers, W. L. (Rosie), and Lessell (Annie); 18 grandchildren, one of whom he considered his own— Korynn. She was the apple of Pawpee’s eye; 3 great grandchildren; three aunts, Dollie Mayfield, Hattie Smith, both of Dubach, LA, Alice Richards of Los Angeles, CA; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Jessie H. McBride -- Shreveport, LA

Services for Jesse Homer McBride were held in the chapel of Rose-Neath Funeral Home on Marshall Street in Shreveport at 11:30 a.m., Monday, February 26, 2001. Officiating was Dr. George Pearce, Jr. of Broadmoor United Methodist Church, assisted by Father Paul Martin of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Interment was at Greenwood Cemetery on Stoner Ave.

Mr. McBride died Friday, February 23, 2001, under hospice care at his home in Shreveport after a lengthy illness. He was born July 9, 1906 in Jackson Parish of Stephen Daniel McBride and Margaret Williams McBride. He attended Louisiana Tech in Ruston. After moving to Shreveport in the twenties he attended Centenary College.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Margaret McBride Deckard, his parents, a brother, D. Lyman McBride, and sister, Edna McBride Naremore, all of Shreveport. McBride is survived by his wife of 65 years, Bess Burkett McBride; a daughter, Marcia McBride Zuber and husband Donald S. Zuber; 6 grandchildren, Stuart C. Deckard and wife Amanda Castille Deckard, Patrick Watts, Maggie Watts Robe and husband Robert Robe, Phillip Watts, Donald Zuber, Jr., David Zuber; five great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by: 2 sisters, Mrs. Hazel McBride Rush of Jonesboro and Mrs. Ethel McBride Smith of Ruston. Pallbearers were his grandsons and honorary pallbearers were members of Kiwanis Club of Shreveport.

Charles Quarles -- Jonesboro, LA

Funeral services for Mr. Charles Day Quarles Jr. was at 2:30 p.m., Friday, February 23, 2001 at the First Baptist Church in Jonesboro, LA with Dr. John Charles officiating. Burial was in the Gayla Traina Memorial Cemetery in Jonesboro under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro. Mr. Quarles passed away Tuesday, February 20, 2001 in the Lincoln General Hospital in Ruston, LA.

Mr. Quarles was the son of Ione and Charles Day Quarles Sr. and was born in Atlanta, GA. He graduated from Georgia Tech University and served in the U. S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Quarles was a paper engineer for 42 years and retired from Stone Container Corp. in Hodge, LA as Director of Maintenance and Engineering. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, an avid golfer, and member of Advance Country Club and a member of the Jonesboro Hodge Lions Club.

He is survived by:

Wife: Barbara Thomas Quarles of Hodge, LA; 2 Sons: Lt. Col. Charles Day Quarles III and wife Alice of Jacksonville, NC and Sgt. Howard Thomas Quarles and wife Mary of San Antonio, TX; 1 Daughter: Barbara Quarles Tipping and husband Barry of Mariette, GA; 1 Brother-in-law: Chester Thomas and wife Joyce of Madison, GA; 4 Grandchildren: Howard Thomas Quarles Jr. of San Antonio, TX, Amy Nicole Quarles of San Antonio, TX, Jonathon Day Quarles of Jacksonville, NC and Matthew Brewton Quarles of Jacksonville, NC.

Pallbearers were: Sonny Jackson, Jimmie Rogers, Donnie Breihn, Johnny Dye, Ernest Howard, L. C. "Buddy" Smith. Honorary Pallbearers were: DeWitt Jones, Paul Williams, Sam Ledbetter, Leonard Conville, Bobbie Emmerson, Barry Doner, Gilbert Pickens, Tad Ingram, Wade Wright.

Edward Wittwer -- Boise, ID

Edward Erie Wittwer, 60, died peacefully Tuesday, February 20, 2001 at home of cancer. Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Friday, February 23, 2001 at the Eagle L. D. S. Stake Center on North Eagle Road. Burial is at the Dry Creek Cemetery in Boise under the direction of Relyea Funeral Chapel of Boise, ID.

Ed was born June 12, 1940 in rural Bowman, MO to LeRoy Madison Wittwer and Opal Mae Ball Wittwer. His dad died when he was young and he became very independent and responsible. He worked in the oil fields at age 13. He served in the army and went to Germany. He has lived in California, Louisiana, Arkansas, Nevada, Missouri and Idaho.

He has six children: Tammy, Anna Lisa, Joseph, Lacy, Stacy and Tracy. He married Jodie Lyn Jordan and they were later divorced. For the past 13 years he has raised Lacy and Tracy as a single parent and loves them dearly. He is survived by 5 children: his sisters, Dixie Shoemaker, Judy Medders, and Joanne Thompson; his brother, Donny Wittwer. His parents, a brother, Joseph LeRoy Wittwer, and his daughter, Stacy preceded him in death.

Iva Walker -- Jonesboro, LA

Iva Jones Walker, 82, of Jonesboro, LA was born February 3, 1919 in Jonesboro, LA and died Friday, February 23, 2001 at Lincoln General Hospital. Funeral services were at First Baptist Church, Saturday, February 24, 2001 at 2:00 P.M. with Dr. Herb Dickerson and Dr. John Charles officiating. Burial was at Jonesboro Cemetery under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro. Mrs. Walker was a homemaker.

She is survived by: her sister, Lessie J. Kilgore of Jonesboro; her niece, Gail Brumley of Jonesboro; and a number of cousins. Pallbearers were: Bobby Culpepper, Bill Decou, Jim Fordham, Randy Layfield, Dwayne Mitchell, and Danny Sullivan.

Sarah Walsworth -- Jonesboro, LA

Sarah Margaret Walsworth, 82, of Jonesboro, LA was born December 30, 1918 in Jonesboro, LA and died Wednesday, February 21, 2001 at Longleaf Care Center. Funeral services were at Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel Friday, February 23, 2001 at 10:00 AM with Rev. William Busbice and Rev. Joey Bignar officiating. Burial was in the Jonesboro Cemetery under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Mrs. Walsworth was a homemaker. She was a faithful and loving wife of R. V. Walsworth for 64 years and a loving mother. She was a longtime member of Centerpoint Baptist Church. She is survived by: her husband, R. V. Walsworth of Jonesboro; 2 sons, Gary Walsworth and wife Martha of Choudrant and Ronnie Walsworth and wife Anita of Downsville; 1 sister, Jo Evelyn Benner of Jonesboro; 4 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Pallbearers were: Jack Bond, James Fitzpatrick, Orvin Maxwell, Garrick Walsworth, Jonathan Walsworth, Josh Walsworth.

Wilbur Hattaway -- Jonesboro, LA

Wilbur R. Hattaway, 72, of Jonesboro, LA, died Saturday, February 24, 2001, at Forest Haven Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. Funeral services were at 11 AM, Monday, February 26, 2001 in the Southern Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ron Lowe officiating. Burial was in the Gayla Traina Cemetery under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Jonesboro, LA. Mr. Hattaway was an Auto Mechanic.

He is survived by: his wife, Frances Hattaway of Jonesboro, LA; 1 son, Wilbur Hattaway of Jonesboro; 3 daughters, Linda Cox of Jonesboro, Myra Bennett of Crockett, TX, and Connie Browne of Hodge; 2 stepdaughters, Mary Nell Cloud of Castor and Peggy Sanchez of Ringgold; 3 sisters, Maxine Hall of Jacksonville, FL, Marth Faye Salley of Gretna and Janice Carpenter of Dodson; 2 brothers, Hayward Hattaway of Jonesboro and J. T. Hattaway of Channelview, TX; 9 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

LaVada Mathews -- Hodge, LA

LaVada G. Mathews, 91, of Hodge, LA was born November 4, 1909 in Hodge, LA and died Sunday, February 18, 2001 at Healthsouth North LA Rehab Hospital. Funeral services were at Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel Wednesday, February 21, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Perry Lassiter and Bro. Dwayne M. Boudreaux officiating. Burial was in Garden of Memories in Jonesboro under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro. Mrs. Mathews is a retired Inspector of Continental Can Company. She is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Alfred L. Mathews.

She is survived by: 2 sons, Alfred L. Mathews, Jr. and wife Betty of Wilmington, DE and Emmitt Mathews and wife Linda of Brownboro, TX; 1 sister, Martha Little of Shreveport, LA; 1 nephew, Rusty Gilbert and wife Martha of Jonesboro; 5 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren. Pallbearers were: Bobby Clyde Brinson, Edward Hughes, Jerry Hutchinson, Bobby Schmidt, Jimmy Schmidt, Bruce Whitman.

Annie Vail -- Jonesboro, LA

Annie Vail, 89, of Jonesboro, LA was born January 3, 1912 in Grand Cane, LA and died Thursday, February 8, 2001 in Pine Hill Nursing Home. Funeral services were at Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel Saturday, February 10, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Billy Mac McBride, Rev. Wayne Morrow, and Dr. John Charles officiating. Burial was in Garden of Memories in Jonesboro under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Mrs. Vail was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jonesboro and was a retired bookkeeper for the Jackson Parish School Board. She is preceded in death by her husband, A. M. "Preacher" Vail, one daughter Mary Frances McDonald, and one son, Joe Vail.

Mrs. Vail is survived by: one daughter, Dorothy Rasbury and husband Harvey of Houston, TX; 4 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were: Tim Hines, Clay Rasbury, Curtis Rasbury, James Robbins, Sr., Bobby Vail, Dickie Vail, and Joe Vail.

Truman Woods -- Chatham, LA

Mr. Truman Woods, 78, of Chatham, LA was born February 22, 1922 in Chase, LA and died Tuesday, February 13, 2001. Funeral services were at the Greater Apostolic Church Friday, February 16, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Doyle McManus officiating. Burial was in the Greater Apostolic Church Cemetery in Chatham under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home of Jonesboro. Mr. Woods was a retired driller and a veteran of the Army. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Kimerly Diane Woods.

He is survived by: his wife, Marjorie Woods of Chatham; 6 daughters, Brenda Chatham of Chatham, Faye Dubberly of Fernandina Beach, FL, Donna Duke of Chatham, Beth Harrison of Monroe, Sondra McIlwain of Monroe, Debbie McLaughlin of Summerville, SC, 1 son, Truman L. Woods of Tallulah; 2 sisters, Mary Lou Boles of Jigger and Dorothy Tidwill of Wisner; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren. Pallbearers were: Carl Duke, Johnny Duke, Daniel Rogers, Dean Faulk, and Tim Ferguson.

Nadine Foster -- Jonesboro, LA

Nadine Foster, 89, of Jonesboro, LA died Tuesday, February 13, 2001 in Zachary, LA of natural causes. Graveside services were in the Jonesboro Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 16, 2001 under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home. Mrs. Foster was a longtime resident of Jonesboro. She is survived by: brother, Sparky Foster of Winnfield, LA; Mary Allen of Baton Rouge, LA; and several nieces and nephews.

Thomas Cloud -- Winnfield, LA

Mr. Thomas Leroy Cloud, 73, of Winnfield, LA died Thursday, February 15, 2001 in the Winn Parish Medical Center. Graveside services for Thomas Leroy Cloud were held on Saturday, February 17, 2001 in the Sanders Chapel Cemetery at Calvin, LA under the directions of Southern Funeral Home. Mr. Cloud was a Winn Parish Native and a Retired Millwright.

He is survived by: his wife, Mattie Bedgood Cloud of Winnfield; 3 sons, Leroy Cloud of Dodson, Hershel Cloud of Winnfield and Charles Cloud of Olla; 2 daughters, Yvonne Lofton of Olla, and Charlene Cloud of Winnfield; 1 sister, Mary Nell Davis of Shreveport; 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
