Verla Miles, 92
Funeral services for Verla Inez Miles, 92, of Jonesboro were held Sept. 8 at the Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Shreve officiating. Burial followed in the Springhill Cemetery.
Born Nov. 9, 1910 in Dry Prong, she was a retired bag catcher.
Mrs. Miles was preceded in death by her son John H. Miles.She is survived by daughters, Juanita Barnett of Jonesboro and Inez Ragus of Sarepta; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren.
Honorary pallbearers were Barney Reynolds and Toby Wright.
Pallbearers were Chuck Buckley, Benji Buckley, Eddie Wright, Hubert Garner, David Aldy, Tony Scott, Kenneth McIntyre and Jason McLarty.
Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.

Walker
Mazie Walker, 91
Funeral services for Mazie Lou Walker, 91, of Quitman were held Sept. 10 in the Sweetwater Baptist Church with the Rev. Stuart Toms officiating. Burial followed in the Sweetwater Cemetery.
Mrs. Walker died Sept. 7 at her home.
Born April 19, 1912 in Quitman, she was a housewife.
Mrs. Walker was preceded in death by her husband, A.B. Walker; three sons, Harold, Earl and John; and one daughter, Essie Walker.
She is survived by daughters, Bessie Williams and husband Henry of Vernon and Floyce Smith and husband Michael of Arcadia; sons, A.V. Walker and wife Allie of Vernon, David Gale Walker and wife Shirley of Quitman, Max Walker and wife Tommie of Quitman, Winston Walker and wife Nancy of Ruston, Royce Walker of Quitman and Ralph Walker and wife Teresa of Quitman; sister, Bam Edminston of Clay; 36 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
Grandsons served as pallbearers.
Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.

Morgan
Joseph Morgan, 31
Joseph Lester “Joe” Morgan, 31 of Shreveport, died Aug. 4 in Clarksdale, Miss.
A native of Oceanside, Calif., he was an 11-year resident of Yucca Valley, Calif. and Louisiana .
He received his elementary and intermediate education in Yucca Valley and graduated high school in Louisiana . He served in the United States Navy during the Gulf War aboard the U.S.S. Virginia. While in the service he was awarded the National Defense Medal, the Southwest Asia Service Medal with one bronze star, the Navy Unit Commendation and Joint Meritorious Award. Most recently he was living in Shreveport and working as a truck driver.
Mr. Morgan was preceded in death by his father, Johnny L. Morgan and his paternal grandparents, Lester and Carla B. Morgan.
He is survived by his mother, Tracy Rader; maternal grandmother, Terry Layton of Yucca Valley; sisters, Beth Steidley of McAlester, Okla., Janet Rader of Yucca Valley and Clarissa Morgan of North Hodge; brothers, Christopher Morgan and wife Jennifer of Monroe, Casey Morgan of Ruston, Chase Morgan of North Hodge and Jarrod Welch of Jonesboro; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, niece and nephews.

Bond
Plessey Bond, 71
Memorial services for Plessey Levi Bond, 71, of Jonesboro will be at a later date and time. Mr. Bond died Aug. 15 in Centerpoint after a long illness.
Mr. Bond was a veteran of the United States Army.
He is survived by his wife, Glenda Bond of Jonesboro; son, Walter L. Bond and his wife Annette of Jonesboro; daughter, Katherine Bond of Quitman; brothers, Eugene Bond of Centerpoint, Robert Bond of Anchorage, Alaska and Thomas Bond of Centerpoint; sisters, Casile Reach of Jackson , Miss., Lucile Sasser of Centerpoint and Pamla Bond of Pennsylvania ; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services will be under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Brown
Bessie Brown, 88
Funeral services for Bessie Hall Brown of Jonesboro were held Aug. 23 at the Mt. Mariah Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church’s cemetery.
Mrs. Brown died Aug. 20.She was a caregiver.
Funeral services were under the direction of King Funeral Home of Ruston.

Pease
Harley Pease, infant
Funeral services for Harley Rose Peace, infant, were held Aug. 26 at the Strange Methodist Cemetery with the Rev. V.L. Montgomery officiating. The child died Aug. 22 at Lincoln General hospital.
She is survived by her mother, Tesha Leighann Pease of Saline; and maternal grandparents, Joy Futrell and husband Edwin of Saline and Art Pease and wife Gene of Saline.
Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.

Carpenter
Jimmy Carpenter, 68
Funeral services for Jimmy Rex Carpenter, 68, of Goldonna were held Aug. 13 at the Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Elton Gunter and Hayward Hossler officiating. Burial followed in the Antioch Cemetery.
Mr. Carpenter died Aug. 11 at Winn Medical Center.
Born Feb. 13, 1935 in Chestnut, he was a retired construction worker.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Robinson Carpenter of Goldonna; sons, Monty Carpenter of Saline and Tim Carpenter of Saline; sister, Jewel Andrews of Goldonna; brother, Archie Carpenter of Winnfield; and six grandchildren; Benji Carpenter and wife Wendy, Kristian Hutchinson and husband Benji, Jennifer Carpenter, Ragan Carpenter, Dewitt Carpenter and Michael Carpenter.
Honorary pallbearers were E.R. Toms, John Edward Garrett, Jerry Martin, Quinton Durbin, Morton Oxford, nephews and brothers-in-law.
Pallbearers were Benji Carpenter, Dewitt Carpenter, Michael Carpenter, Benji Hutchinson, David Morgan and Trey Morgan.
Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.

Copeland
Gary Copeland, 48
Funeral services for Gary E. Copeland, 48, of Dodson were held Aug. 7 at the Cypress Creek Baptist Church in Dodson with the Revs. Nicholas Verrett and M.F. Copeland officiating. Burial followed in the Cypress Creek Cemetery.
Mr. Copeland died Aug. 5 at Winn Parish Medical Center.
Born in Homer, he was a graduate of Dodson High School and Louisiana Tech University. He was a member of the Cypress Creek Baptist Church, where he served as treasurer and was a member of the cemetery board. He was a production supervisor and an avid fisherman.
He is survived by his wife, Rhonda Browning Copeland of Dodson; son, Kris Copeland and wife Laurie of Dodson; grandson, Bailey Copeland of Dodson; granddaughter, Taylor Copeland of Dodson; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Preston Copeland of Dodson; brother, Steve Copeland and wife Angie or Ruston; sister, Pam Harvey and husband Wayne of Weston; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers were Terry Jones, Jimmy Jones, Brian Jones, Woody Jones, Chad Robinson, Gary Browning, Joe Lynn Browning and Tommy Chellette.
Honorary pallbearers were Kyle Robinson, Taylor Robinson and Danny Browning.
Services were under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Winnfield.

Kirkham
Winston Kirkham, 70
Funeral services for Winston Kirkham, 70, of Quitman were held Aug. 5 at the Fellowship Cemetery in Quitman with the Rev. Eugene Doan officiating.
Mr. Kirkham died July 4 in Quitman following a long illness.
He was born in Bienville and was a retired paper finisher at the paper mill. He was a veteran of the United States Army.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Precious Jewel Kirkham; sister, Eloise Denton; and brothers, Dwain and Earl Kirkham.
He is survived by his sister, Ellen Marsh of Quitman; four nieces; four nephews; eight great-nieces; 12 great-nephews; and eight great-great-nieces and nephews.
Services were under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Kunz
Charles Kunz, 71
Charles Kunz, 71, retired executive with Continental Group and husband of Rosemary L. Kunz, died Friday, Aug. 15, 2003. A native of Muskegon, Mi., he was a son of the late Chester C. and Ann Strieder Kunz. A chemical engineer he was a graduate of the University of Kentucky, Harvard Business School, was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, UK Alumni Association, the Harvard Club and was an active volunteer, including the Highlands County Florida Mediator Program. A Korean War veteran, he served as a Special Forces Paratrooper. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter and son, Patricia K. (Michael) Howard, Lexington, and James F. Kunz, Ridgefield, Conn.; daughter-in-law, Sandra M. Kunz, Ruston, La.; three step-children and their families, Judith M. Bondus, Millbrook, M.Y., Jack L. Bondus, St. Paul, Minn. and Eric W. Bondus, LaMiranda, Calif.; two brothers, David G. Kunz and Gerald (Betty) J. Kunz, both of Louisville; five grandchildren; Michael and Courtney Howard, Lexington, Lauren and Danielle Kunz, Bethel, Conn. and Stephen S. Kunz Jr., Ruston; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara H. Kunz, and two sons, Charles Christian Kunz Jr. and Stephen Strieder Kunz. Services were Aug. 18 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, conducted by Rev. Wilfred Fraenzle. Pallbearers were Jack Bondus, Jay Kunz, Michael Kunz, David Marion, Dr. Rusty Page and Bruce Warren. Memorials may be made to Emergency Nurses Association Foundation, 915 Lee St., Des Plaines, IL 60016 or Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Drive, Lexington, KY 40504.Services were under the direction of Milward Funeral Home of Lexington.
