James Hogg, 66
Graveside services for James E. “Jim” Hogg, 66, of Saline, were held Feb. 21 at the Antioch Cemetery near Quitman with John Holland officiating. interment was in Antioch Cemetery.
Mr. Hogg died Feb. 17 at his residence near Saline following a lengthy illness.
He was a retired veteran of the United States Air Force.
Mr. Hogg is survived by his sister, Mildred F. Hogg Bryant and husband James of Saline; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Services were under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Holder
William Holder, 81
Services for William D. “Bill” Holder, 81, of Jonesboro, were held at Feb. 21, 2004 at First Baptist Church, Jonesboro with Dr. Matthew D. Wohlfarth officiating. interment followed in the Gayla Traina Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Holder died Feb. 19, 2004 at Lincoln General Hospital following brief illness. Born June 18, 1922 in Hico, he was a retired businessman having co-owned Southern Funeral Homes, Inc. and operated Southern Funeral Home in Jonesboro for almost 50 years. He co-founded and was president of Old South Life Insurance Company until his retirement in 1995 and was a partner in Jonesboro Ford, Lincoln and Mercury for many years. Mr. Holder also served as president of Jonesboro Federal Savings and Loan and was honored by being chosen as Grand Marshal of the Christmas in the Pines parade. He was extremely civic minded having served his country faithfully in the Navy during World War II, a member of the Louisiana State Board of Hospitals during the tenure of Gov. John McKeithen, active as a Mason and a Shriner, District Lt. Governor and Local President of Kiwanis, active in supporting youth programs in the parish and a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Jonesboro. He is preceded in death by parents, W.D. and Bernice Jones Holder; first wife, Farah Bryan Holder; brother, Donald G. Holder; two sisters, Alice Joiner and Lois Holleman.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda McKenzie Holder of Jonesboro; son, Mike Holder and wife Penny of Jonesboro; daughter, Barbara Jane McDonald and husband Michael of Blue Ridge, Texas ; step-son, Darien L. McKenzie of Atlanta, Ga.; step-daughter, Dariea Rosenberg of San Diego, Calif.; brother, John F. Holder of Shreveport; sisters, Pauline Perry of Shreveport and JoAnn Spigener of Minden; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers were Glynn Saulters, Wade McBride, Kent McBride, Cody Cheatwood, Phillip Underwood and Ross Pullin.
Services were under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Howard
Ruth Howard, 93
Services for Ruth Howard, 93, of Quitman, were held Feb. 23 at the Southern Funeral Home Chapel in Jonesboro with the Rev. Donald Rudd officiating. Burial followed in the Antioch Cemetery near Quitman. Mrs. Howard, a homemaker, died Feb. 21 at Lincoln General Hospital in Ruston following a lengthy illness. She was a faithful member of Quitman Baptist Church and a loving mother and grandmother.
Preceding her in death was her husband B.F. Howard.
Mrs. Howard is survived by: son, Ted Howard of Beech Springs, La; daughter, Barberlene Pipes of Choudrant; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; a host of other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers were Tom Goss, Butch Goss, Eugene Norred, Bobby Gresham, Daniel Howard and Lavon Atkins.
Services were under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Jonesboro.

Strickland
Jillian Strickland, infant
Funeral services for Jillian Grace Strickland, infant, of Jonesboro were held Feb. 22 at the Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gene Cumpton and Steve Miles officiating. Burial followed in the Gayla Traina Cemetery.
She was born Jan. 8, 2004 in Shreveport.
She is survived by her parents, Jason and Stacy Strickland of Jonesboro; brother, Hunter Strickland of Jonesboro; maternal grandparents, J.H. and Patricia Byrd of Jonesboro; maternal great-grandmother, Philodean Byrd; paternal grandparents, Randy Strickland of Boise, Idaho and Carolyn Porter of Vidalia; and paternal great-grandmother, Virginia Porter of Ferriday.
Pallbearers were Robert Morgan and Stephen Morgan.
Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.

Thomas
Billy Thomas, 80
Funeral services for Billy Elma Thomas, 80, of Hodge were held Feb. 21 at the Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. J.D. Moss officiating. Burial followed in the Mt. Olive West Cemetery.
Mr. Thomas died Feb. 19 at Glenwood Medical Center.
Born Nov. 28, 1923 in Jonesboro, he was a retired production supervisor for the mill and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Willene Thomas of Jonesboro; sons, Phil Thomas and wife Jamie of Ruston and Bruce Thomas and wife Toni of Jonesboro; sisters, Judy Reed and husband Walton of Jonesboro and Minnie Crow and husband John of Jonesboro; brothers, Delmer Thomas of Sulphur and P.C. Thomas Jr. of Ruston; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Honorary pallbearers were Douglas Plunkett, Kelly Leach and Quincy Plunkett.
Pallbearers were Jack Bond, James Earl Harvey, Paul Jones, Tim Norman, Roger Council and Bobby Borland.
Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.

Vail
Hiram Vail, 72
Funeral services for Hiram Junior Vail, 72, of Greenwood were held Feb. 20 at the Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jimmie Vail officiating. Burial followed in the Mt. Olive East Cemetery in Bienville.
Mr. Vail died Feb. 18 at his home.
Born April 17, 1931 in Jonesboro, he was a retired truck driver and a veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Arlene Vail of Greenwood; daughters, Kathy Diane Adibmand of Lewisville, Texas , Sherry Harrington of Alvarado, Texas and Shirley Peeples and husband John of Belem, Brazil; brothers, Harold Gene Lum of Monroe, W.C. Vail of Page, Ariz. and James Vail of Jonesboro; nine grandchildren, Brandy Harrington, Amanda Harrington, Robert Adibmand, Christopher Adibmand, Katie Adibmand, Gayle Peeples, Debbie Peeples, John Peeples III and Ellen Peeples.
Pallbearers were Robert Adibmand, Christopher Adibmand, Todd Abercrombie, Alton Smith, Randy Harrington and Reggie Askin.
Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.

Evans
Francis Evans, 88
Funeral services for Francis Wilson “Gook” Evans, 88, of Quitman were held Feb. 12 at the Highway Chapel Church of God with the Rev. J.D. Moss officiating. Burial followed in the Bear Creek Cemetery in Bryceland.
Mr. Evans died Feb. 10 at his home.
Born Jan. 19, 1916 in Lawrence, Miss., he was a retired motor grader operator and a veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Evans; son, James A. Cummings; grandson, James Randall Cummings; brother, John D. Evans; and sister, Virgie May.
He is survived by his granddaughter, Cindy Thompson and husband Bob of Shreveport; grandchildren, Jim Cummings and wife Rhonda of Port Barre and Don Cummings of Opelousus; 11 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Honorary pallbearer was Jerry Brown. Pallbearers were Rob Thompson, Chris Thompson, Buster Poland, Rusty Poland, Paul Johns and William Ed McConathy.
Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.

Hays
John Hays, 64
John Bowen Hays died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004. Memorial services were held for him Friday, Feb. 13 at Edmonds Funeral Home in Jonesboro, La., conducted by the Rev. Stuart Toms and assisted by the Rev. Perry Lassiter.
Pallbearers were Buddy Taylor , Mike Miles, Doug Stokes, Jerry Hutchinson, Travis Hall and Kelvin Humphries. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Lucky Aces and Brooklyn Trash bowling teams from Monroe, La. He lived for Monday and Tuesday night bowling leagues.
John was born Oct. 28, 1939 in Brookhaven, Miss. to John B. Hays and Dorothy Lucas Hays. Early in life, the family moved to Monroe.
John was in the United States Navy for nine years. He graduated from Northeast Louisiana University with a degree in aviation in 1971. After being employed by Bellsouth for more than 30 years, John retired in February of 2002.John was an avid high school football fan, a golfer and a bowler. Not many people knew it, but John enjoyed crochet and had made several baby Afghans for newborn family or friends.
He was a Christian and a member of Hodge Baptist Church since 1982. He was active in the church choir for nearly 20 years. He considered as family his friends at Hodge Baptist Church.
John is survived by his wife, Carole Jordan Hays of Quitman, La.; two sons, John B. Hays and wife Beth of Monroe, La. and Craig M. Hays and wife Jacque of Gretna, La.; four daughters, Sean E. Hays of Hodge, La., Susan C. Hays of Jonesboro, La., Stacey M. Hays of West Monroe, La. and Shelley Hays Shows and husband Jason of Quitman, La. Also, John leaves his pride and joy, his grandchildren: Crystal Hays and Jacob and Cole Shows, and his step-grandchildren, Evan Crowell and Katie Hanna. Other family members are his aunts: Lois Golman and husband Hollis of Monticello, Miss., Martha Lucas of Monroe, La. and Elodie Hays of West Monroe, La. John is also survived by the family of his first wife, who live in New Orleans, La. In Carole’s family, John is survived by his two sisters-in-law, Jackie Hughes and husband Billy Joe of Baton Rouge, La., Betty Walsworth and husband Billy Ted of Kiethville, La.; nephew, Keith Hughes and his family of Gonzales, La.; three nieces, Pam Hamrick and her family of Franklin, Tenn., Pat Ferlito and her family of Shreveport, La., Paula Brantley and her family of Mooringsport, La.; and three aunts, Mattie Wheatly of Jonesboro, La., Annie Maude Caraway of Ruston, La. and Jessie Wheatley of Ruston, La.
Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.

Magee
J.D. Magee, 93
Funeral services for J.D. “Jack” Magee, 93, of Hodge were held Feb. 1 at the Hodge United Pentecostal Church with the Revs. Jeff Stroud and Glen Smith officiating. Burial followed in the Jonesboro Cemetery.
Mr. Magee died Jan. 29 at Lincoln General Hospital.
Born Dec. 6, 1910 in Kokomo, Miss., he was a retired pulpmill cook for the paper mill and a veteran of the United States Army during World War II.
He is survived by his wife Hazel. L. Causey Magee of Hodge; daughter, Alma Dell Clawson of Kokomo; sons, Buel L. Magee and wife Paula of Hodge and Quinten Causey of Hodge; sister, Grace Rhymes of Tylertown, Miss.; brother, George Magee of Kokomo, Miss.; 11 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Grandsons will serves as pallbearers.
Services were under the direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.
