Services for Francis M. “Max” Varner, age 75 of Eros, were held 2:00 p.m. Thursday August 12, 2004 at Mt. Olive Baptist Church near Eros with Revs. Jerry Fleming, Franklin Pearce and Mike Devallier officiating. interment was in the Mt. Olive Cemetery under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Jonesboro. Visitation was held Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Mt. Olive Baptist Church.
Mr. Varner was a retired welder and served his country faithfully in the U.S. Army and was a Korean Veteran.
Preceding him in death was his parents Louis F. and Letha Wilhite Varner and sisters Mildred Virginia Browder and Sybil Jean Waggoner.Mr. Varner is survived by his wife, Mary Viola Varner of Eros; daughter, Marsha Kaye Baugh and husband Norman of Eros; son, Marty Elton Varner and wife Sherry of Columbia; brother, Harvey Louis Varner and wife Marie of Eros; sisters, Doris Evelyn Hammons and husband Elmer of Quitman, Maribeth Pesnell of Choudrant and Linda Dianne Ferguson and husband George of Eros; 5 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Pallbearers were Jason Varner, Brian Baugh, Daniel Overturf, Ronnie Massey, Glen Varner and Herman Leonard

Carr
Elmer Carr, 94
Funeral services for Elmer Doyal Carr, 94, of Quitman, LA were held on Wednesday, August 25, 2004 at 2 PM at Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating was Rev. Ronnie Burns. interment followed at Antioch Cemetery in Quitman.
Visitation services were held on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 from 5 PM to 8PM at Edmonds Funeral Home. Pallbearers were D.J. Allen, Pete Alderman, Ron Johnston, Mickey Barlow, Wink Loventhal and Jimmy Carr. Honorary pallbearers were Charles Lucky, Harold Allen, Jerry Baker and Rodney Whitman. Mr. Carr Passed away on Monday, August 23, 2004, at Healthsouth North La. Rehab Hospital. He was a U.S. Navy veteran having served his country during World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Mrs. Maude Pearl Carr. Survivors include one sister, Marie Carr Terry of Quitman, LA and a host of nieces and nephews.

Holmes
Woodrow Holmes, 89
Funeral services for Mr. Woodrow W. “Woody” Homes, age 89, of Jonesboro, La were held at 2 P.M. Sunday, August 29, 2004 at the Jonesboro United Methodist Church with Rev. Stewart Sherman officiating. Private graveside services followed at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Winnfield, LA. Mr. Holmes was a native of Winnfield, LA and graduated from Winnfield High School in 1931. Afterwards he attended La. Tech for 2 1/2 years before enrolling in the Forestry School at LSU where he received his BS in Forestry in 1938. Mr. Holmes entered the Navy Midshipman School in 1942 and graduated as an Ensign. He served his country during WWII in the Atlantic and Mediterranian and was discharged as a Navy Lieutenant. Mr. Holmes has been active in the Lions Club since 1948. In 1964 he was honored by the Zwolle Lions Club for unselfish and faithful service and was named Lion of the Year. In 2004 he was named a Melvin Jones Fellow by the Jonesboro-Hodge Lions Club, which is the highest honor for a Lion. Mr. Holmes was dedicated forester all of his life. After WWII, he worked for the Farm Forestry Program and later moved to Zwolle and worked as a forester for Mansfield Hardwood Lumber Company. In 1964 he moved to Jonesboro and worked until his retirement in 1980 for Continental Forest Industries. Mr. Holmes was a founding member of the LA Foresters Association and North La. Group of Foresters. He was honored for 25 years service as Chairman of Nominations for the North La. Group of Froesters in 1985. Mr. Holmes was very active in Scouting and in November of 1959 received the Silver Beaver Award, the highest honor for volunteers to Boy Scouts. Mr. Holmes was a longtime active member of the Jonesboro United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mrs. Maxine Lee Holmes of Jonesboro, La, 2 daughters, Carol Holmes of Jackson ville, Fla. and Sheila Theriot and husband Richard of Mena Ark., 1 sister, Mrs. Ada Mae Clark of Bossier City, La. and 1 grandchild, 1 beloved nephew, Glenwood Bullard of Bossier City, La and many other much loved nieces and nephews.

Peevy
William Peevy, 91
Funeral services for William Alfred Peevy, 91, of Jonesboro, LA were held on Friday, August 27, 2004 at 10:00 AM at Edmonds Funeral Home. Officiating was Rev. Malcom Self. interment followed at the Jonesboro Cemetery. Visitation time was held Thursday, August 26, 2004 from 5 PM to 7 PM at Edmonds Funeral Home. Mr. Peevy Passed away on Wednesday, August 25, 2004. He was a retired supervisor for the Paper Mill. Survivors include his wife, Connie Peevy of Jonesboro, LA, two daughters Patricia Hill and husband Charles of North Hodge, LA, Freida Parker and husband Mervin of Ruston, LA; one son, Larry Peevy and wife Linda of Jonesboro, LA; one brother Waylon Peevy and wife Katherine of Jonesboro, LA; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, Sister in law, Aulena Peevy of Jonesboro, LA, brother in law, Keith Tankersley of Jonesboro, LA, two step sons, Jerry Ginn and wife Debbie of Jonesboro, LA, James Ginn and wife Tracy of Shreveport, LA. Pallbearers were Larry Peevy, Jr., Wayne Hay, Dean Slaughter, Gary Hill, Steven Anderson and James Ginn.

Smyth
Hazel Smyth, 87
Graveside services for Hazel Pearl Smyth, 87, of Greenwood, LA were held at Hodge Cemetery on Sunday, August 29, 2004 at 2 PM. Bro. Bill Strawbridge officiated the service. Mrs. Smyth Passed away on Friday, August 27, 2004 at Willis Knighten Hospital. She was a homemaker. Survivors include: four sisters: Ruth Eaton of Jonesboro, LA, Merna Brashear of Hodge, LA, Margie Stanks of Springfield, IL and Faye Cox of Hodge, LA; one brother: Fred Hunter Clay of Greenwood, LA; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Turner
Winnie Anderson Turnerr, 94
Services for Winnie Anderson Turner, 73 of Quitman, LA were held Monday, August 30, 2003 at 2 PM at Quitman United Methodist Church with Rev. Genny Hoyt officiating. interment followed at Brooks Chapel Cemetery, in Quitman, LA under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Mrs. Turner Passed away on Friday, August, 27, 2004 at St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe, LAShe was a long term member of the Quitman United Methodist Church. Mrs. Turner was preceded in death by her parents Jesse and Mary Anderson; sisters- Mary Dee Smith, Nell Rogers, Zadie Pearl Anderso; brother- W.D. Anderson and 3 grandchildren- Christopher, Kristie and Tiffany Caples. She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Rhode Turner of Quitman, LA, her 4 daughters, Sherry Carpenter and husband Joe of Goldonna, LA, Jeannie Caples and husband Ronnie of Quitman, LA, Rhonda Mosley and husband Max of Pensacola, FL, Melissa Caskey and husband Alan of Quitman, LA; grandchildren: Chasity Caples, Jason Carpenter, Casey Carpenter, Brandi Mosley, Caitlin Mosley and Anna Grace Caskey. Step-grandchildren: Joseph Carpenter, Tammy Walpole; two great grandchildren, and four step-great grandchildren; one brother, Dewey Anderson of Quitman, LA and numerous nieces and nephews, family and friends. Pallbearers were Jason Carpenter, Eric Futrell, Gerald (Sharky) Lynde, Roger Maxwell, Charles Neeles, Mike Turner, and Stevie Turner. Honorary Pallbearers were Greg Futrell, Lowell Lynde, Jr., and Steve Matlock. Visitation was held Sunday, August 29 at the funeral home from 5 PM until 9 PM. Also, from noon until service time on Monday at the Quitman United Methodist Church. Memorials can be made to the Quitman United Methodist Church Kitchen Fund, P.O. Box 95, Quitman, LA 71268; and Brooks Chapel Cemetery Fund, 4201 Hwy 818, Ruston, LA 71270.

Hearne
Willie Mae "Bill" Hearne, 96
Services for Mrs. Willie Mae “Bill” Hearne were held Wednesday, September 29, 2004 at 2:00 PM in the Jonesboro United Methodist Church in Jonesboro, LA. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Jonesboro, LA. Visitation was held at Edmonds Funeral Home in Jonesboro, LA on Tuesday, September 28, 2004 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Mrs. Willie Mae “Bill” Hearne was born Feb. 13, 1908, in Cottage Grove, Tennessee. She died Sept. 27, 2004 in Shreveport. Mrs. Hearne moved from Deweyville, Texas to Jonesboro, La. in the summer of 1934. Became organist and pianist for Jonesboro Methodist Church in 1934, and served until 1993. She taught piano in Jonesboro for many years.
She was an avid Bridge player and loved to travel. She is survived by her children: a son, Mack Hearne and wife Gayle of Baton Rouge: a daughter, Dana Mann and husband Dennis of Shreveport. Grandchildren: Dr. Martin Hearne and wife Dr. Lisa Hearne of Mt. Vernon, Iowa: Dana D. Mann, and Amanda Davis and husband, Jim of Shreveport. Great grandchildren: Angela Conrad, Jason Hearne, Amy Hearne, Wesley Davis, and Amanda-Marie Davis. Great Great Grandchildren: Avery Conrad, Riley Conrad, Taylor Conrad, Kaden Hearne, and Alaina Hearne. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Wesley McClain and Paralee Mandana Cole McClain: her husband, Howard Edwin Hearne, and six brothers and sisters; Jessie Manis Hatch, Fay Louis McClain, Charles Malcom McClain, Alice Geraldine “Jerry” Perry, Russia McClain, and Winnie McClain. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the doctors and nurses of Willis Knighton Pierremont of Shreveport and to Dr. Tommy Smith of Ruston.

Johnson
Mary Francis Parker Johnson , 61
Funeral services for Mary Francis Parker Johnson , 61, of Jonesboro were held Sept. 24 at Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Malcolm Self officiating. interment then followed at the Ebenezer Baptist Cemetery. Mrs. Johnson Passed away on Sept. 21. Born July 28, 1943, she was a nurse aide. She was preceded in death by her husband, A. C. Johnson , and one son, Michael Parker.
She is survived by son, Greg Johnson and wife Leary of Jonesboro; granddaughter, Nicole Shirley and husband Darius of Winnfield; great grandson, Kaden Shirley of Winnfield; step great grandson, Warren Shirley of Winnfield; sisters, Roxie Aldy and husband David of Jonesboro, Annette Emanus and husband Tommy of Jonesboro, and Billy Jo Ross of Rochester, WA; half sister, Josie Campbell of Shreveport; brother, Joe Parker and wife Vickie of Fort Lupton, CO; half brother, Willis Terry of Monroe. Pallbearers were J.D. Ables, David Aldy, Tommy Emanus, Darius Shirley, Bobbie Crawley, and Billie Joe Moore.

Lowery
Shawn David Lowery, 26
Funeral services for Shawn David Lowery, 26, of Dodson were held Thursday, Sept. 16 at New Hope Methodist Church . Rev. Bill Bradford officiated. interment then followed at New Hope Methodist Cemetery. Mr. Lowery Passed away on Monday, Sept. 13. He was employed as a carpenter. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Lowery.
Survivors include his parents, Michael and Brenda Lowery of Dodson; one son, Chance A.C. Lowery of Ringold; three sisters, Gail Villalobes and husband Abrahm of Dodson, Susan LaFollette and husband Danny of Winnfield, Denise Tipton and husband Pat of Shiloh, AR; nephews and niece, Abraham, Selena, and Billy Villalobes all of Dodson; fiance’, Linda Lamkin of Dodson, and her sons, Clay, Nathan, and Brandon Lamkin; and a very special friend of Mr. Lowery, James Brantley of Magee, AR.

Simpson
John Wesley Simpson, 63
Services for John Wesley Simpson, age 63, of Belle Chasse, LA will be at Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, September 28, 2004 at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow in the Old Saline Cemetery in Saline, LA. Mr. Simpson was a native of Hodge, LA and a resident of Belle Chasse, LA for the past 60 years. He was a veteran of the United States Navy. Mr. Simpson was a beloved husband of Glenda Gray Simpson.
He is also survived by his children: Charles “Greg” Simpson, John M. Simpson, Kimberly Ann Simpson, Lois A. Simpson, and Sherri Leigh Simpson Dingus; one brother, Billy Charles Simpson; one sister, Ann Simpson Ochello; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Mr. Simpson was preceded in death by his parents, Charles E. Simpson and Natha Lee Daniels Simpson; one son, John Wesley Simpson, II; one daughter, Sue Lynn Simpson; one sister, Linda Kay Simpson Finton. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Diabetes Association in memory of Mr. Simpson.

Smith
Kevin Wayne Smith, 16
Funeral services for Kevin Wayne Smith, 16, were held Tuesday, Sept. 21 at First Baptist Church in Jonesboro. Services were officiated by Dr. Matthew Wohlfarth. interment then followed at Springhill Cemetery. Kevin accepted Jesus into his life in April of 2004 and went to be with the Lord Saturday, Sept. 18.
He was a member of the youth ministry of First Baptist Church. He was a student of Jonesboro-Hodge High School where he was loved by faculty and students. Kevin loved water sports, nature, and talking to friends on the telephone. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, George Erb and Oscar Saenz. Survivors include his parents, Michael and Lisa Smith of Jonesboro; one sister, Nicole Smith of Jonesboro; paternal grandmother, Phylis Smith of Osceola, AR; paternal grandfather, Robert W. Smith and wife Mary of Hattiesburg, MS; maternal grandmothers, Anna M. Smith and husband Clarence of Corpus Christi, TX and Irma Saenz also of Corpus Christi, TX; aunts, Katherine Cox of Horn Lake, MS and Mary Ann Saenz of Austin, TX; uncles, John Lee Saenz and wife Gloria of Corpus Christi, TX, Michael O. Saenz of San Antonio, TX, and Randall Smith of Hattiesburg, MS.
Pallbearers included Randall Smith, John Saenz, Michael O. Saenz, Mathew Bosch, Andy Gibbs, Jeremy Maxwell, and Stephen Cox.
