Alice L. Jordan, 49 of West Monroe, died November 14, 1997 at her residence. It's hard to imagine a world without Alice. To quote Speed Lamkin, "she was a broke-back girl to whom everyone went for strength." She awoke at noon and by evening the kitchen of home on Peach Street would be full of people. She held court there at the kitchen table every night until morning, elegantly smoking Marlboro, and drinking Jack Daniel. She'd put on a pot of beans or someone would bring something for the grill. Whoever came could eat. Someone might play some music or pull out the cards for a poker game. Among her friends were artists, writers, musicians, actors, doctors, laborers, and many young people seeking her witty advice, seeking shelter from a crazy world-because Alice's world with its smoke and drink and music and laughter was, above all, sane. Alice was a collector and patron of the arts. As co-owner of the Lost Bazaar Art Gallery, she has been instrumental in encouraging young artists to show their works. In the last three years, the gallery has introduced over 150 artists to the public. Alice is survived by a sister, Dy Jordan, a brother, Clint Jordan, her business partner and long-time friend, Edmund Williamson, her godmother, Gussie Strumpell, and, of course, Alice's special childrenten daughters and twelve sons. Memorial donations may be made to The Alice Fund, 205 Trenton Street, West Monroe, LA 71291.
