BOGALUSA - Funeral services for Mary Starnes Luper, 58, are scheduled at 2 p.m. today in the chapel of Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jerry Cox officiating.

Visitation was yesterday from 5-9 p.m. at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home.

interment will follow in the Nobles Cemetery at Pine.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Luper.

Survivors include two daughters, Vickie Luper and Crystal Luper, Pine; two sons and daughters-in-law, Leslie and Myrtis Luper, Pine, Carlos and Ann Luper, Thomas; six sisters and a brother-in-law, Mrs. Mabel (Stanley) Chaney, Deanie and Dewight Stockstill, all of Covington, Mrs. MevaLee (Red) Taylor , Varnado, Mrs. Nell Bates and Mrs. Joan (Stanley) Williams, Pine, Mrs. Jean (Virgil) Fairborne, Franklinton; three brothers, James Starnes, Warnerton, William Starnes and Lark Starnes, Pine; 14 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

BOGALUSA - Funeral arrangements are incomplete for Regina Owens, 29, a resident of 1118 Ann Street, who died today at LSU/ Washington -St. Tammany Regional Medical Center in Bogalusa.

Crain and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Oscar Hart

FRANKLINTON - Funeral services for Oscar Hart, 83, are scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday at Greater Hayes Creek Missionary Baptist Church, the Rev. Jerome Warren officiating.

Burial will follow in Greater Hays Creek Cemetery, Crain and Sons Funeral Home directing.

Visitation is from 2-3:30 p.m. today at Crain and Sons Funeral Home in Franklinton and continues after 4 p.m. at the Greater Hayes Creek Missionary Baptist Church until the time of the services.

Mr. Hart died Feb. 3, 2000 at Dixon Medical Center in Covington, La.

A native of Franklinton, at the time of his death Mr. Hart resided at 46075 Oscar Hart Road.

He is survived by his wife, Myrtle Hart, Franklinton; two daughters, Mildred Causey, Franklinton, and Kathryn Warner, New Orleans; five sons, Jurley Hart, Alvin Hart and Otis Hart, all residents of Franklinton, Alton Hart, Bogalusa and Roan Hart, New Orleans; two sisters, Regina Bell, Franklinton, and Blanchie Cooper, New Orleans; two brothers, Delos Hart, New Orleans, and Jerley Hart, Franklinton; four daughters-in-law, Gloria Hart, Mary Nell Hart, Janice Hart and Christine Hart, all residents of Franklinton; 26 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Glenda Davis- Smith

BOGALUSA - Funeral plans are incomplete at this time for Glenda Smith-Davis, 80, who died Feb. 5, 200 at Bogalusa Community Medical Center.

She was a native of Bogalusa.

Jessie Juiel "Jack" Dunaway

BOGALUSA - Funeral services for Jessie Juiel "Jack" Dunaway, 69, are scheduled for 2 p.m. today in the Brown-McGehee Funeral Home chapel, the Rev. Dennis Allen officiating.

Burial will follow in Hillview Memorial Gardens under the direction of Brown-McGehee Funeral Home.

Visitation was from 5-8 p.m. Saturday at Brsown-McGehee Funeral Home and continues after 8 a.m. today until the time of the services.

Mr. Dunaway died Feb. 5, 2000 at Bogalusa Community Medical Center.

A native of Columbia, Miss., Mr. Dunaway had resided in Bogalusa for most of his life.

He was a veteran of the United States Army and a veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Dunaway was a member of an a deacon at Memorial Baptist Church of Bogalusa.

Her was preceded in death by his wife, Ophelia Keen Dunaway, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jessie Juiel Dunaway Sr., and a sister, Louise Hartfield.

Survivors include four sisters-in-law, Mrs. Bernice Jones, Mrs. Artelia Easterling and Mrs. Juanita Pounds, all residents of Bogalusa, and Mrs. Henrietta Keen, Columbia, Miss., two brothers-in-law, Willard Keen and Bruce Pounds, both residents of Bogalusa, a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Magnolia "Maggie" Brown

BOGALUSA - Funeral services for Magnolia "Maggie" Brown, 83, a resident of 915 S. Royal St. in Bogalusa, are scheduled for 1 p.m. Jan. 25 at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Bogalusa, the Rev.

Dr. Aaron Thompson officiating.

Burial will follow in Sweet Valley Cemetery in Hub, Miss., Crain and Sons Funeral Home directing.

Visitation is from 2-7 p.m. Monday at Crain and Sons Funeral Home in Bogalusa. Family hour is from 7-8 p.m. Monday.

Mrs. Brown died Jan. 19, 2000 at the Bogalusa Community Medical Center.

Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her husband, Hollis Brown, a daughter, Catherine Moore, and a son, Johnny Ray Brown.

Survivors include a daughter, Hollies Jean Preston, Bogalusa; a grandson, Derrick L. Preston, Bogalusa; a step-daughter, Clarissa James, Bogalusa; one sister, Nezie Vaughn, St. Louis, Mo., one brother, Leonard Mondy, Bogalusa; four grandchildren, three step grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Olivia Rose Brody, Avery Clair Brody, and Maxwell James Brody

MYSTIC, Conn. - Olivia Rose, Avery Clair and Maxwell James Brody, infant triplet babies of Kebbie J. and James Lawrence "Jim" Brody of Mystic, Conn., died Wednesday shortly after their premature births in the University of Connecticut Medical Center.

Besides their parents, they are survived by maternal grandparents, Clarice and Doug Fitzgerald of Varnado; maternal great-grandmother, Helen Gibbons of Varnado; and paternal grandmother, Sue Brody of Teaneck, N.J.

They are also the grandchildren of the late Jimmie Lang and the late Arthur Brody.

Private rites are planned.

Rosetta Williams McKenzie

(Died Dec. 5, 1999)

ANGIE - A funeral service is being held today at 11 a.m. in the Hilltop Missionary Baptist Church for Rosetta Williams McKenzie, 95, who died Sunday in Heritage Manor Nursing Home.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, J.D. an Gladys McKenzie of Hilltop community; two daughters and sons-in-law, Myrtle and Delos Singley of Hilltop community; Chinesy and Hillery Sumrall of Franklinton; a daughter-in-law, Jimmie Lou McKenzie of Pine; a sister, Lear Tynes of Sandy Hook; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and 23 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew McKenzie; two sons, George Leroy and K.C.

McKenzie; two grandchildren, Rosemary Ingram and Michael Wayne Branch; a son-in-law, Robert Branch; a great-great daughter, Buffy McKenzie; a granddaughter-in-law, Jeanette McKenzie; a great-great granddaughter, Fontana Seal; her parents, George and Emily Williams; four brothers and three sisters.

Robert Howard Pierce Sr.

SUN - Funeral arrangements have been completed for Robert Howard Pierce Sr., age 76, who died Monday at St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington. He was a veteran of World War II.

Visitation will be Friday from 4-8 p.m. in the chapel of Brown-McGehee Funeral Home and will continue Saturday from 8 a.m. until time of funeral services at 11 a.m. interment will follow at Emmanuel Baptist Church Cemetery. He is survived by his wife Janella Otzenberger Pierce, Sun; a son, Robert H. Pierce Jr, Ruston; two daughters, Belinda Pierce Kent, Vicksburg, MS and Bonny Pierce Shaw, Wichita, KS; a brother, Harry Pierce, Newark, OH; and 11 grandchildren.

Ruth Gentry Talley

COVINGTON - Miss Ruth Gentry Talley, a life-long Bogalusa resident and civic leader, died Dec. 29, 1999 in St. Tammany Parish Hospital. For the last three and one half years, Miss Talley was a resident of the Christwood Nursing Home community in Covington, where a dedicated and loving staff attended her.

Funeral arrangements include visitation at the Elizabeth Sullivan Memorial Methodist Church at 10 a.m. Friday, December 31, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. In keeping with her wishes she will be buried in a private interment in the Ponemah Cemetery. Ruth Gentry requested that instead of flowers, those who wish are asked to make a contribution to the ESM Methodist Church. Poole Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth Gentry Talley was born in Bogalusa on Aug. 27, 1921, to Bogalusa City Attorney Bascom D. Talley Sr. and Maude Gentry Talley. She attended Bogalusa public schools and graduated from Bogalusa High School in 1938. While at BHS she demonstrated her gifts for music, drama and the arts.

A member of the Hollins College centennial graduating class of 1942, she majored in history and art appreciation with minors in both music and voice. She pursued her musical and artistic interests by participating in various college choirs and drama groups.

Following college graduation Miss Talley attended Sophie Newcomb College where she completed the requirements for a Teacher's Certificate for the State of Louisiana , fulfilling a promise to her father. She returned to Bogalusa and began work as a legal secretary and bookkeeper for her brother, Bascom D. Talley, Jr. in the law firm, which would become Talley, Anthony, Hughes & Knight. She graduated from the L.S.U. School of Law in 1953, a member of Phi Delta Delta Legal Fraternity. She returned to Bogalusa and practiced law in partnership with her brother, as well as John Anthony, Charles Hughes and Richard Knight. At the firm she specialized in probate and real estate law for more than twenty years until her retirement.

During her legal career Miss Talley received many awards and recognitions. She served as President of the Washington Parish Bar Association and the National Association of Women Lawyers. She received an honorary Doctorate of Laws Degree from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. She was a member of the Public Afffairs Research Council of Louisiana and the American Judicature Society. During her professional career she served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Parish National Bank, the Columbia Road Land Company and the Bogalusa Realty Company.

An active civic volunteer, she served in various leadership positions in the Bogalusa Chapter of the Business and Professional Women's Club, the Bogalusa Civic League, the Bogalusa Garden Guild, and the YWCA where she served as president from 1957 to 1959. Her longest and most active participation was with the Philharmonic Club, a federated music club in Bogalusa. She served as the club's president on three occasions: 1956-1958, 1966-1967 and 1985-1986.

Ruth Gentry Talley was an artist who enjoyed concerts and opera and participated in a wide range of artistic endeavors. These included woodcarving, mosaics, and painting in various media. During her professional career she participated in and hosted The Thursday Painters, an informal group who shared her passion for things artistic. Her last painting completed only weeks before she died is an abstract watercolor painting entitled Ocean. Both working on the painting and the resulting picture gave her great pleasure. Her fascination with and collection of oriental art-especially Buddhas, highlight her eclectic range of artistic interests. She began collecting these figures while in high school and continued the quest for unusual and different Buddhas throughout her adult life.

Ruth Gentry Talley is survived by her sister-in-law, Imogene Wilson Talley Barrios of Bogalusa; her niece, Jean Talley Drew of Minden, and her nephews, Bascom D. Talley, III of Washington , DC, Morris W. Talley of Baton Rouge, and James E. Talley of Covington. In addition she is survived by five grand nephews and two grand nieces: Cullen R. Talley, Richard H. Drew 111, Georgia Gentry Drew, Heather L. Talley, Travis C. Talley, Bascom D. Talley, IV, and Gilman J. Talley.

Ella Hayes Williams
Obituary dated January 6, 2000
BUSH - Ella Hayes Williams, age 76, died yesterday. She was a native of Arm, MS and a resident of Bush.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Pierce Cemetery between Varnado and Pine. She is survived by her husband, Huey "P.L." Williams; two daughters, MaryKay W. Stump and Judy W. Cannon; two sons, James Haynes and Joseph Wayne Williams; two sisters, Alice Myrtle Maness and Marcel Claggett; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

E.J. Fielding Funeral Home in Covington is in charge of arrangements.

Ezzie Ruth Smith

(Died Feb. 5, 2000)

BOGALUSA - The funeral service for Ezzie Ruth Smith, 80, is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. at Second Missionary Baptist Church in Bogalusa, the Rev. James D. Cyrus officiating.

Visitation is from 2-6 p.m. at Crain and Sons Funeral Home, with a family hour from 6-7 p.m.

Burial will follow in Bogalusa Cemetery.

Mrs. Smith died Saturday in the Bogalusa Community Medical Center.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jonnell D. Smith Gatlin.

Mary Diane Munoz

(Died Dec. 8, 1999)

TEXAS - Mary Diane Munoz, 43, died Tuesday at Hermann Memorial Baptist Hospital in Beaumont, TX. She was a native of Bogalusa, lived in Silsbee, TX and was a homemaker.

A graveside service will be today at 2 p.m. at the Old Hardin Cemetery in Kountze, TX. Service is under the direction of Brossard's Mortuary in Kountze, TX.

She is survived by her husband, Joe Munoz of Silsbee, TX; two daughters, Linda Ishee and Tonya Rowell of Franklinton; a son, Junior Ishee of Gulfport; two brothers, Huey Green of Pine and Jimmy Green of Shreveport; two sisters, Margaret Ishee of Gulfport and Carolyn Warren of Pine; her mother and stepfather, Lillie Mae Rainer McRae and James McRae of Pine and five grandchildren.

Ida T. Carter

(Died Jan. 8, 2000)

WAVELAND, MS - The funeral service for Ida T. Carter, 89, a resident of Waveland, is scheduled for 11 a.m. today at Mt. Chapel Baptist Church in Waveland with the Rev. Henry S. Dunn officiating.

Burial will be in Waveland cemetery, Baylous Funeral Home directing.

Visitation was from 9 a.m. today until the time of service.

Mrs. Carter died Saturday in Gulfport, MS. She was a member of Mt. Chapel Baptist Church and a Sunday school teacher.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Pansy B. Tyson, Bogalusa; three nephews, Bruce T. Tyson, Bogalusa, Eddie Lee Tyson, Biloxi, MS and Walter Tyson, IL; three nieces, Freddie T. Brooks, Bogalusa, Carol T. Quinn, New Orleans and Pamela Magee, Franklinton; and a god daughter, Patricia E. Whitley, New Orleans.
