Bert Hunter Lewis, M.D.

(Died July 25, 2000)

ANGIE - Dr. Bert Hunter Lewis, 83, a resident of Angie and a retired country doctor and farmer, died Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in is home of a heart attack.

Born to Bert L. Lewis and Faye Hunter Lewis on March 22, 1917 in El Reno, OK, he was an only child.

Lewis graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1939. He was a 1942 graduate of L.S.U. School of Medicine. He met and married his wife, Thelma DeFelice Lewis, a registered nurse during his medical internship at Charity Hospital. She worked beside her husband during his medical career at Angie. After graduating he enlisted in the United States Army and served his country in North Africa. After being discharged as a major he began his medical practice at the Gray-Lewis Clinic in Springhill, LA.

In 1947 he came to Angie to begin medical practice with Dr. Ruffin Fornea. After the death of Dr. Fornea, he remained in private practice until his retirement in 1980. During his years of practice in Angie he treated numerous patients from the Washington Parish area including Walthall and Marion County, MS. After retiring from his medical practice he became the medical director for Bogalusa Plasma and also worked part time in the medical clinic at L.S.U. Washington -St. Tammany Regional Medical Center in Bogalusa until his final retirement in 1993.

Lewis is survived by his wife, Thelma DeFelice Lewis of Angie; four children, Mike Lewis of Gulfport, MS, Stephanie Lewis of St. Francisville, Jeff Lewis of Bonner Creek, and Chris Lewis of Varnado; two daughters-in-law, Kim Wascom Lewis of Bonner Creek and Kay Flynt Lewis of Varnado; eleven grandchildren, Heather McFadden, Jennifer McFadden, Hunter Farrar, Brandon Farrar, Jeff Lewis, Jr., Leslie Lewis Toups, Melissa Lewis, Justin Lewis, Brittany Hartford, Christal Lewis and Stephen Lewis; and a great grandchild, Taylor Toups. He will also be missed by a devoted employee and friend of 24 years, Vern Peters.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bert L. and Faye Hunter Lewis.

Visitation is today from 6-10 p.m. at Sandy Hook United Methodist Church, Sandy Hook, MS, and will continued tomorrow after 9 a.m. until time for the funeral service at 11 a.m. at the church with Dr. Tommy King, Rev. Michael Knippers and Rev. Harold Babin officiating.

interment will follow in the Sandy Hook United Methodist Church Cemetery in Sandy Hook, MS.

Pallbearers are Dr. Lewis’ nephews, Ronald Kilgen, Sandy DeFelice, Hank DeFelice, Marty DeFelice, Bob DeFelice, Kirk Kilgen, Luke DeFelice and Mark DeFelice.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sandy Hook United Methodist Church Building Fund or the Sandy Hook Baptist Church Building Fund.

Deborah Susanna Rivero

(Died July 27, 2000)

BOGALUSA - Deborah Susanna Rivero, 50, of Bogalusa died today in Tulane Medical Center of New Orleans.

She is survived by her mother, Beatrice Mulford, and Sidney Joseph Rivero, both of Bogalusa.

There will be a graveside service at Sanctuary of Peace Mausoleum tomorrow at 10:30 with Father Lawrence Phelps officiating.

Ebone’ Treshone Winfield

(Died July 27, 2000)

BOGALUSA - Ebone’ Treshone Winfield, infant, of Bogalusa died yesterday at Washington -St. Tammany Regional Medical Center. She was the one month old daughter of Carla and Harrison Winfield Jr.

She is survived by her parents, Carla and Harrison Winfield Jr., both of Bogalusa; a brother, Harrison Winfield III; grandparents, Myrtis Johnson Robinson of Bogalusa, Carolyn Sherman of Baton Rouge, Harrison Winfield Sr. of New Orleans; great-grandparents, Elsie Allen of New Orleans; four aunts, Eva (Warren) Peters and Lucretia Johnson of Bogalusa, Dionne (Gary) Burton of Slidell; three great-aunts, Sandra (Michael) Jordan of New Orleans, Eva Johnson Booker of Bogalusa, and Annie (John) Clark of Abita Springs; four great-uncles Darrell Allen of New Orleans, Richard (Anita) Allen of Marietta, LA, Emerson Johnson of New Orleans, and Kenneth (Delores) Johnson of Covington; god parents, Mr. and Mrs. Teno Lyons; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be Saturday at Crain and Sons Funeral Home in Bogalusa from noon until time for service at 2 p.m. The Rev. Tom Bailey Jr. will officiate.

interment will follow in Community Cemetery in Sun, LA.

John E. Jones

(Died July 20, 2000)

BOGALUSA - John E. Jones, 64, of Sandy Hook, MS., died last Thursday at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Thiel; a step-daughter, Melissa Miller, both of Sandy Hook, MS; a son, Dewey Raymond Jones; and a granddaughter, Kimberly Renee Jones, both of Laurel, MS.

Funeral services were conducted last Saturday from the Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m.

interment followed in the Carson Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Improve, MS.

Geraldine Walker Sarka

(Died July 28, 2000)

BOGALUSA - Mrs. Geraldine Walker Sarka, age 75, of Varndao died Friday in Baton Rouge.

She is survived by a daughter, Gayle White of Baton Rouge; two sons, Antal Sarka of McComb, MS, and Ted Sarka of Bogalusa; and three grandchildren, Ryan and Regan White of Baton Rouge, and Trenton Sarka of McComb, MS.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Emile Sarka.

Visitation will be today at the Poole Ritchie Funeral Home in Bogalusa from 11:30 a.m. until time for service at 3 p.m.

interment will follow in Seal Cemetery.

Ralph Earl Pigott

(Died July 30, 2000)

ANGIE - Ralph Earl Pigott, 51, of McGowan Road in Angie, died Sunday in ITS of Slidell Rehabilitation Center.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Pigott; a son, Ronnie P. (Amy) Pigott; two daughters, Precious (Quavodius) Bickham and Deshia Pigott, all of Angie; a god-daughter, Rolanda Simpson of Fort Smith, AR; two brothers, Davon (Alice) Pigott of Houston, TX and Otha Pigott of Mansfield, OH; a sister, Tammy Peters of Bogalusa; three grandchildren, Patrick, Candice, and Quierra; a special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Archie (Mattie) McGowan Sr.; a special sister-in-law, Mae Johnson , all of Angie; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leroy (Earnestine) Pigott; and a brother, Leroy Pigott.

Visitation will be today at Crain and Sons Funeral Home of Bogalusa from 2-6 p.m.

The funeral service will be tomorrow at 2 p.m. at True Word Ministries Church in Angie with the Rev. Jerome Patrick officiating. interment will follow in Pilgrim Rest Cemetery in Angie.

Mary Louise Harrison

(Died August 8, 2000)

BOGALUSA — Mary Louise Harrison, 68, a native of Bogalusa and resident of New Orleans for the past 40 years, died Tuesday in Touro Infirmary. She was a retired teacher who taught at F.P. Richard and Edward Hynes elementary schools and was assistant director of the Adept Program at Hynes. She was a member of Mount Tabor Baptist church, a superintendent of the Sunday school there, and a member of Lew Elegance Social Club.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph Harrison Sr.; a son, Cedric W. Harrison; an adopted son, Tyrone Terry; a stepson, Joseph Harrison Jr.; a stepdaughter, Janice Harrison; two sisters, Gloria Hartfield and Gertrude Ball, both of Los Angeles; and a brother, Luke C. Griffin of Bogalusa.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday. The funeral service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Mt. Tabor Baptist church, 4128 Franklin Avenue. interment will be in Bogalusa Cemetery. E.J. Winson Mortuary Services is in charge of arrangements.

Larry J. Mingo

(Died August 6, 2000)

FRANKLINTON — Larry J. Mingo, 53, a resident of Blueberry Court in Franklinton, died Sunday in his home.

Survivors include his wife, Annie Mingo; mother, Mary “Mae” Mingo both of Franklinton; a daughter, Becky Mingo of Peru, IN; a son, Larry Brown of St. Louis, MO; 3 step daughters, Sandra (Blain) Sims, Shenitha (Gary) Sims both of Memphis, TN, and Zelda (Melvin) Butler of Independence, LA; a step son, Paul Robinson of New Orleans; five brothers, Jimmie RayMingo, Charles Mingo, James Mingo all of Franklinton, Samuel Mingo of Oakland, CA, and Terry Bickham of Slidell; five sisters, Christine Vernon, Janice Kelly both of Oakland, CA, Ida Mae Sibley, Johnnie Ruth, and Paulette Mingo all of Franklinton; 10 step grandchildren; two aunts, Leatha Bickham and Ethel Perkins of Franklinton; two uncles, John Wilson and Charles Wilson of New Orleans; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be tomorrow at Crain and Sons Funeral Home of Franklinton from 3-7 p.m. with family hour from 7-8 p.m. The funeral service will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Greater Hayes Creek Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerome Warren officiating. interment will be at Greater Hayes Creek Cemetery. Crain and Sons Funeral Home of Franklinton is in charge of arrangements.

Larry J. Mingo

(Died August 6, 2000)

FRANKLINTON - Larry J. Mingo, 53, a resident of Blueberry Court in Franklinton, died yesterday in his home.

Claude Holland Weaver

(Died August 5, 2000)

BOGALUSA - Claude Holland Weaver, 76, a resident of Don Bates Circle in Bogalusa, died Saturday, in Resthaven Living Center.

Weaver served in World War II from 1942-1945 in the United States Marine Corps. He participated in action against the Japanese Forces in Tarawa, British Gilbert Island, Siapan, Tinian, and Marianas Island. He later retired from the LA Department of Highways in August of 1973 at the age of 49 as an assistant district engineer.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Doris Kennedy Weaver of Bogalusa; two sons, Terry (Lorraine) Weaver and Larry (Kim) Weaver of Lockport, LA; two daughters, Penny (Michael) Ashley of Bogalusa and Pam Bourgeois and a special friend Bryan Adams of Lockport, LA; 16 grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; a special nephew, Dempsey and Ruth Lumpkin of Bogalusa; and other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Gary "Red" Horace Weaver and a grandson, Jerime Paul Bourgeois.

Visitation will be held in the Chapel of Brown-McGehee Funeral Home today from 4:30 p.m.-11 p.m. and will continue tomorrow from 8 a.m. until time of service in the chapel at 11 a.m.

Burial will be in the Seals Cemetery at Stateline with full military rites conducted by Magic City Post # 24 of the American Legion. The Rev. Ed Jenkins and the Rev. R.J. Kennedy will conduct service.

Eric Wayne Burch

(Died August 6, 2000)

CARTHAGE, TX — Eric Wayne Burch, 41, of Carthage died Sunday. He was born April 8, 1959. Survivors include his parents; sisters, Tempa Roehl of Long Branch, TX, Tina Sigler of Overton, TX; brothers, Gregory Alan Burch of Austin, Arkansas and Lance Kevin Burch of Lufkin, TX. Visitation will be today from 7-9 p.m. at LeRoy Rader Funeral Home. The funeral service will be tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of the Rader Funeral Home with the Rev. Dick Stagner officiating. interment will follow in the New White Oak Cemetery in White Oak, TX.

Adrian Joseph Norman

(Died August 8, 2000)

SUN - Adrian Joseph Norman, 59, a resident of Sun and a native of Bogalusa died yesterday in his home.

Survivors include his wife, Pulley Theriot Norman of Sun; two sons, Adrian Joseph Norman Jr. of Picayune, MS and Michael Doolittle of Hickory, LA; two daughters, Angela Jean Norman of Bogue Chitto, MS and Karen Plesica of Slidell; three brothers, Ed "Boots" Norman of Huntsville, AL, Leon Norman and Bill Norman both of Bogalusa; three sisters, Wilda Thompson of Independence, MO, Glenda Ikerd of Wakefield, LA, and Anna Morivatz of Friendswood, TX; his mother, Dollie Holden Norman of Friendswood, TX; one granddaughter; four grandsons; and numerous other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Howard Leon Norman.

Visitation will be today from 5-10 p.m. and will continue tomorrow from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m.

The funeral service will be conducted from the chapel of Brown-McGehee Funeral Home. Date and time of the service will be announced later.

interment will follow in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery in Bogalusa.

Dorothy Elaine Barnes Cornist

(Died August 6, 2000)

MT HERMON - Dorothy Elaine Barnes Conrnist, 69, a resident of Vernon School Road in Mt. Hermon, died Sunday in Riverside Medical Center. She worked in the Washington Parish School System as a teacher, and retired in 1992 with 30 years of service. She received her education from the Washington Parish High School in Franklinton and went on to complete her studies in education at Southern University in Baton Rouge, where she earned her B.A. in elementary education. She received her Master’s from Southeastern Louisiana University, and her 30+ from Louisiana Tech. She was the first kindergarten teacher in the Washington Parish School System and served on various committees. She was awarded the Outstanding Contributions to the Reading Council Act, International Reading Association, Outstanding Presidential Leadership Award, and Elementary Teacher of the Year in Washington Parish from 1986-1988. She was a member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church where she served as church musician, Youth Advisor, Sunday School teacher, Deaconess Board and many more. She was active in the Third District Bogue Chitto Baptist Association. She was active in the Louisiana Home & Foreign Mission Baptist State Convention where she served as 1st Vice President of the Minister’s Wives & Widows, and Recording Secretary for Mission 1. She was an active member of the National Baptist Sunday School & BTU Congress of Christian Workers and the National Baptist Convention of America, Inc. She was a member of many organizations.

She is survived by one daughter, Carol Elaine Cornist Durgan (Lynell), one granddaughter, Autumn NaKiya Durgan Spring Valley, CA.; three sisters Marvene Branham, Seattle, WA; Mona Anderson (Edwin), Gail Gethers (Harry) Los Angeles, CA; four brothers Bobby Barnes Seattle, WA; Phil K. Barnes (Louise); John H. Barnes of Franklinton, LA.; Jim Barnes (Mary) of Bogalusa, LA; three sisters-in-law Ollie L. Cornist of Tallulah, LA; Cornelia Barnes, Baton Rouge; Mae Barnes, Franklinton; six Godchildren, Dr. Bryce Jackson (Rebecca), Panama City, FL; Macqueline Cathey (Walter) Vallejo, CA; Patrice Barnes, Franklinton; Candice Hookfin, Arcola, LA; Michelle Martin, Jackson , MS; Claudette Castille, Eunice, LA; four aunts, two uncles, nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by husband, the Rev. Reuben H. Cornist, parents, Marvin and Julie Mae Barnes; and one brother, Billy Ray Barnes.

Visitation will be in the Chapel of Crain & Sons Funeral Home in Franklinton at noon tomorrow with wake services at 6 p.m. at Sweet Home Church of Christ Holiness in Franklinton. The Rev. Mallery Callahan, President of the Third District Bogue Chitto Baptist Association will officiate. Home going Celebration will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Mt. Hermon. The Rev. Dr. Benjamin J. Maxon Jr., President of the Louisiana Home and Foreign Mission Baptist State Convention will officiate. interment will be at Mt. Olive Cemetery.
