Tommie Abdalla

Tommie Linn Abdalla, 67, went home to be with the Lord Friday evening, May 11, 2007, in DeQuincy Memorial Hospital.

Born in Ville Platte, she was a lifelong resident of DeQuincy and an active member of The Pentecostal Church of DeQuincy. A retired teacher who loved books and music, she was a devoted supporter of the Bible Quizzing program of the United Pentecostal Church with both her children and her grandchildren. She faithfully contributed to Tupelo Children’s Mansion and taught Sunday School for many years before her illness.

She leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband of 47 years Abraham Abdalla; three sons, Jonathan and wife Melissa of The Woodlands, Texas , David and wife Kathy of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Daniel and fiancee Elizabeth Ferrer of Baton Rouge; two sisters, Imogene (Gene) Spears and husband Allen, and Evelyn Langford, all of DeQuincy; a sister-in-law Sadie Abdalla of DeQuincy; four grandchildren, Devin, Brendan, Keaton, and Dillon; a niece Rhonda Self, husband Don, and children Kayli and Cullen of Spring, Texas ; a nephew Ricky Langford of Bridge City, Texas ; and numerous relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Tom Robinson and Mattie Royer Robinson.

Memorial services were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 15, at The Pentecostal Church of DeQuincy. The Rev. G. David Hennigan officiated. Burial was in Rigmaiden Cemetery under the direction of Myers-Colonial Funeral Home.

Roland Parker, Sr.

Roland Parker Sr., 79, of DeQuincy, died May 7, 2007, in his residence.

He was born in DeQuincy and was an Army veteran and a member of Lunita Pentecostal Church.

Survivors include his wife, Betty W. Parker; his son, Roland Parker, Jr. and wife Molly; one daughter, Ann Broom and husband Gary; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Vickie Lynn Peoples.

Services were held Thursday, May 10, in First United Pentecostal Church. Rev. Billott and Rev. Morgan officiated. Burial was in Perkins Cemetery.

Betty Royer

Mrs. Betty Mahtook Royer died Saturday, May 5, 2007.

Mrs. Royer was born and raised in Lafayette. She graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in Lafayette, and was employed by The Daily Advertiser for over 30 years.

She was Catholic and attended Holy Cross Church.

Mrs. Royer is survived by her husband, Gerald “Pete” Royer, formerly of DeQuincy; three sons, Carl Royer and wife Portia of Lafayette, Steve Royer, and wife Nancy of Flowery Branch, Ga., and Mark Royer of Lafayette; one daughter, Susie Breaux, and husband Dwight of Lafayette; and eight grandchildren.

Mrs. Royer’s body was donated to science, and she requested that no services be held on her behalf.

Memorial donations may be made to the kidney transplant team at UMC Transplant Center, Attn: Administration, P. O. Box 69300, Lafayette, LA 70596.

Joyce Robinson

Joyce Griffith Robinson, 82, of DeQuincy, died Saturday, May 12, 2007 at her home in DeQuincy.

Survivors include her husband, Sid Robinson, daughter Roxanne Lane, son Russell Robinson, sister Mildred Kitchens, and one grandson, Joseph Lane. She was preceded in death by her mother, Georgia Range, father John Griffith, and sister Marguerite Beneke, who was married to Tex Beneke of Big Band fame.

Mrs. Robinson grew up in Lufkin, Tex., and enjoyed singing, dancing, and playing the piano. Later she became a cheerleader at Lufkin High School.

Mrs. Robinson attended Texas Women’s University in Denton, Tex., where she graduated in 1944 with a B.A. in business.

One of Mrs. Robinson’s legacies was her dedication to her family and to all children. She enjoyed many days teaching as a substitute and helping in the office at her children’s Sunday School and other activities at Sunset Acres Baptist Church in Shreveport. One of her proudest moments came in 1969 when she was awarded the Life Member Award in the Louisiana Parent-Teacher Association.

Mrs. Robinson was active in the First Baptist Church in previous years and had been president of the WMU.

Myers-Colonial Funeral Home of DeQuincy will make cremation arrangements. Anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution may do so at the church or charity of their choice.

A memorial service will be held in the chapel of Woodridge Baptist Church, 850 East Bert Kouns, Shreveport at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 9.

Jerry Gilbert

Jerry W. Gilbert, 68, of DeQuincy, died Saturday, May 26, 2007.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 29, at the First Baptist Church of DeQuincy. Bro. Rod Boyer officiated. Burial was in the Masonic Cemetery in DeQuincy.

He was born in DeRidder, and was raised in Ragley.

He was an Army veteran, and was a member of the H.Q. Battery, 3rd Gun Battalion, 82nd Artillery division and was stationed in Germany during the erection of the Berlin Wall.

He retired from Citgo in 1997 as a contract maintenance supervisor. Prior to working at Citgo, he was a Lake Charles Fireman and worked as a welder for the Piledrivers, building bridges over the Atchafalaya Basin.

In his younger days, he was a cowboy for Paret Ranch. He spent his retirement ranching.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Knight Gilbert of DeQuincy; one son, Jud Gilbert of DeQuincy; one daughter, Cathy Gilbert Boyer and husband Blake of DeQuincy; seven grandsons; two sisters, Betty Broussard of Moss Bluff and Barbara Gilbert of Ragley; and two brothers, Harry Gilbert of Ragley and Johnny Gilbert of Lake Charles.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wm. O. and Fara Nation Gilbert; a sister, Billy McFatter; and three brothers, Benny Gilbert, Larry Gilbert and Jimmy Gilbert.

Hillard Heard

Hillard A. Heard,70, died June 17, 2007 in a Lake Charles hospital.

He was born and lived in DeQuincy. He was a member of Northside Baptist Church.

He left DeQuincy High School before completion to voluntarily join the Air Force. Mr. Hillard retired from the Air Force in 1976 after serving for 23 years, including three tours in Vietnam as well as multiple assignments in Germany.

Survivors include two sons, Duane E. Heard and wife Shelli of Alexandria, and John E. Heard of DeQuincy; two daughters, Monica Cheek and Cyd P. Heard both of S.C.; two brothers, Allen Heard of DeQuincy, and Kenneth Ray Dunn of Singer; three sisters, Betty Fern Hoosier, Mary Poole and Billie Jean Brown all of DeQuincy; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Heard, four brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday June 20, in Northside Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Dr. Ray Clark will officiate. Burial will be in Perkins Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 20 at the church from 10 a.m. until time of service.

Arthur Hemmenway, Jr.

Arthur “A. J.” Oran Hemmenway, Jr., 85, of Oretta, died Friday, June 15, 2007, at his residence. He was a member of Apostolic Church of the Remnant in Oretta. He served in the United States Army during World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Esther (Kourtney) Hemmenway, of Oretta; one daughter, Theresa Voshelle and husband Richard of Moss Bluff; one son, Rev. Arthur A. Hemmenway and wife Micheal of Oretta; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held at Apostolic Church of the Remnant Sunday, June 17. Burial was in Oretta Cemetery under the direction of Christensen Funeral Home of DeQuincy.

Bertie Ashworth

Bertie Faye Ashworth, 80, of Starks, died Tuesday, June 12, 2007, in Sulphur.

Funeral services were held Friday, June 15, at Calvary Apostolic Church in Starks. The Rev. Jeremy Shields officiated.

Survivors include two sons, Bobby Ashworth of Starks, and Craig Ashworth of Lake Jackson , Tex.; two daughters, Jeanie Stewart of Starks, and Mary Bradshaw of Ragley; one brother, R. L. Hollie of Starks; two sisters, Evelyn Phillips of Starks; Lurline Gillis of Starks; 14 grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren.

Landers Bellard

Landers Bellard, 60, of DeQuincy, died Saturday, June 9, 2007, in DeRidder. Mr. Bellard was a native of Ville Platte.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 16 at Macedonia Baptist Church, Belaire Cove. The Rev. Ray Johnson officiated. Burial was in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include three daughters, Rita Scott, Penny Bellard and Tessie Major, all of DeRidder; three sisters, Mayrita Doucet of Ville Platte, Sandra Goodly of Mamou, and Pamela Minix of Opelousas; one brother, Irvin Bellard of Opelousas, nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Jimmy Clark

Jimmy Dewaine “Bull” Clark, 71, of Starks, died Thursday, June 14, 2007, at his residence.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Starks.

He is survived by two sisters, Emogene Rodriguez of Port Bolivar, Tex., and Iva Dale Halter of Baytown, Tex.; and two brothers, Larry Clark of Deweyville, Tex., and Laurence Clark of Port Bolivar, Tex.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 16, at the First Baptist Church of Starks. Burial was in Good Hope Cemetery in Singer under the direction of Christensen Funeral Home, DeQuincy.

Jane Sanders

Jane Loretta Sanders, 75, died Thursday, June 14, 2007, in Livingston, Tex. She was born in DeQuincy. She was a former member of Hargrove Baptist Church and was a member of Farmington Baptist Church in north Houston. She worked as a receptionist at the Forum in The Woodlands, Tex., for 14 years.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph M. (J. M.) Sanders of Onalaska, Tex.; one son, James Ricky Sanders of Conroe, Tex.; two daughters, Janice Carline Sockhaus of Sutton, Mass., and Jolynette Holman of LaPorte, Tex.; one sister, Mildred Guillory of Tyler, Tex.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Her funeral was held Sunday, June 17, in Hixson-Snider Funeral Home of DeQuincy with Rev. Paul Nugent of Hargrove Baptist Church officiating. interment was in Perkins Cemetery.

R. C. Storms

R. C. Storms, 75, of Starks, died Saturday, June 16, 2007 at his residence. He was born in Clarksville, Ark., Mr. Storms lived in Starks for the past 21 years, after leaving Hartburg, Tex. He retired as a canal crew foreman with the Sabine River Authority.

Mr. Storms is survived by his wife, Betty L. Storms; one son, Roy Corbin Storms and wife Kathy of Silsbee, Tex.; two daughters, Dianne Stanley and husband Andy of Starks, and Judy Storms of Port Arthur, Tex.; four sisters, Verla Droddy of Hartburg, Betty Sellers of Hartburg, Wilma Hutcherson of Conway, Ark., and Lee Marie Powell of Rockport, Tex.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 19, at the First Baptist Church of Starks. interment was in the VFW Cemetery in Starks. Rev. Robert Davis officiated.

Martha Buck

Life of a Virtuous Woman

May 5, 1924 in Gurley, Louisiana , God’s love was evident when He blessed Jessie and Nettie Gayden with a beautiful baby girl. God sent his angels to retrieve his earthly possessions on Oct. 9, 2007. He saw her suffering and so tired and said “Enough, it’s time to bring my child home.”

She was baptized at an early age, at the Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Hankins.

Martha married her life long love, Isiah Buck, Jr. She graduated from Grambling College in 1958 where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. She worked in Vinton, Louisiana for five years, and also in DeQuincy for 15 years. Due to health reasons, she retired after 20 years from Calcasieu Parish School Board. She was active in the Clarence Walker Substance Abuse Center, local NAACP, and a member to the Retired Teachers’ Association and Ministers Wives Association. Martha also worked as a teacher for the Headstart Program.

She was a lifelong member of the Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church where she served in many capacities. Some of which included: The Mission Department, the Deaconesses, The Greeter, and as personal secretary and prayer companion to her late husband Reverend Isiah Buck.

Martha Buck was a faithful and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved beautiful clothes and hats.

On Tuesday Oct. 9, 2007, the spirit of Martha Buck departed this life to rest in the Heavenly Realm of Our Almighty God.

She leaves to cherish her wonderful memories, two children, Patricia (Howard) Harrington of District Heights, Maryland and Delicia (Daniel) Marburgh of DeQuincy, Louisiana ; two sisters, Aell Gayden and Albertha Brown; one sister-in-law, Jessie Gayden, one brother-in-law, Clarence Thomas, all of DeQuincy, Louisiana ; grandchildren, Isiah, Brian, Daniel, Danielle and Adrienne; nine great-grand children; a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jessie and Nettie Gayden; her husband, Reverend Isiah Buck, Jr.; her sister Augustine Armstead; and her brother Jessie Gayden Jr.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 20 at 11 a.m. at Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church. The Rev. Marvin L. Durgan will officiate. Burial will be at Paradise Cemetery in DeQuincy.

Donald Mericle, Sr.

Donald Mericle, 74, died Friday Oct. 12, 2007 in a local hospital.

Mr. Mericle was born in Oretta. He retired from the State of Alaska Department of Transportation.

He is survived by his wife, Bobbie Lee Ellis Mericle of DeQuincy; one son Donald Mericle, Jr. of DeQuincy; one daughter Sandra Mericle of DeQuincy; two brothers James Mericle of Alaska and Marvin Mericle of Sulphur; two sisters Pauline Aguillar of Fredrickburg, Tex. and Eloise Cassell of Lake Charles; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents and one sister Elaine Goff.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 16, at Hixson-Snider Funeral Home Chapel in DeQuincy. Rev. T. D. Cardwell, Sr. officiated.

Danny Duplichan

Danny Duplichan, 56, of Westlake died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2007 in a local hospital. He was a carpenter most of his life.

Survivors include his wife, Dean Duplichan of Westlake; four sons, Danny Duplichan and wife Terri of Elton, Shannon Duplichan, Brian Duplichan and Kevin Duplichan, all of Westlake; two daughters, Annette Dawsey of Westlake and Crystal Duplichan of Baton Rouge; three brothers, Jerry Duplichan of Ragley, Mike Duplichan of Kinder, and Jody Duplichan of Kinder; five sisters, Deborah Sharp of DeQuincy, Vickie England, Sheila LeJeune, Carolyn Touchet, and Marilyn Presley, all of Kinder; and eight grandchildren.

His funeral was held Tuesday, Oct. 16, in Hixson Funeral Home of Westlake, Deacon Garrett Caraway officiated. Burial was in Green Oaks Cemetery in Kinder.

Mary Guillory

Funeral services for Mary Roberts Thomas Guillory, 87, of Huffman, Tex. will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 18, at Our Lady of LaSalette Catholic Church in DeQuincy. Fathers Armstrong and Brunnert will officiate. Burial will be in DeQuincy Community Cemetery under the direction of Frazier and Hixson Funeral Homes.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the church.

Mrs. Guillory had formerly lived in Opelousas, DeQuincy, and Lake Charles. She was a member of Holly Family Catholic Church of Baytown, Tex. and belonged to the Ladies Altar Society and Knights of St. Peter Claver Auxiliary.

She is survived by one son Albert Joseph Thomas of Huffman, Tex., three sisters, Stella Lee of Baytown, Tex., Elnora Matthews of Opelousas, and Catherine Lemelle of Baytown, Tex. and three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Raymond Poole

Raymond Matthew Poole, 56, a native of Atlanta, Ga., and a resident of Starks, Passed away Saturday, Aug. 11, 2007, at his residence in Starks.

He was a Baptist by faith. Raymond served his country in the Marine Corps and was a construction worker by trade. Raymond loved life and lived it to the fullest. Above all he loved in this live, nothing compared to the love he had for his family. He was very much looking forward to the birth of his grandchild, Karlee Elise McCorquodale, due Sept. 13. He was a beloved father, brother and friend to many. Raymond will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him and each life that he touched in his own special way.

He was the son of the late James “Bob” Poole and the late Betty Coile Poole.

He is survived by his daughter, Rae Lynn Poole of DeQuincy; four sisters, Melody Landry of Lake Charles, Jo Gail Morris of Singer, Ruth Shaw of Hanford, Calif., and Grace Moody of Austin, Tex.; one brother, Robert “Bobby” Poole of Texas ; the mother of his child, Carol Ann Poole of DeQuincy; four nieces; and three newphew. His is also survived by his faithful dog, Alice.

The family would also like to extend their deepest love to the Walter Lee Harris family for their care, concern and passion over the past years. He could not have had a more loving second family.

The family received friends, Monday, Aug. 13, and Tuesday, Aug. 14, in Christensen Funeral Home of DeQuincy. His funeral was at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14 with the Rev. Robert Davis officiating. interment was in Miller Annex Cemetery in Starks.
