Zilla Rainwater

Zilla Miller Rainwater, 90, a native of DeQuincy and a resident of Starks, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2007, at the Care Center of DeQuincy. She was a member of First Pentecostal Church, Starks, where she served as a past Sunday School teacher, choir member and Ladies Auxiliary member.

She is survived by one sister, Arlene “Chaddie” Stanley of Starks and one brother, Sam Miller of Starks.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, two brothers, Albert Miller and Johnny Miller and two sisters, Annie Thompson and Eva “Baby Doll” Stanley.

Funeral service was held at First Pentecostal Church in Starks at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, with the Rev. Greg Frazier officiating. interment was at Hyatt Cemetery. in Fields under the direction of Christensen Funeral Home.

David Siler

David S. Siler, 77, of Starks died Aug. 12, 2007. He was born in Chicago, Ill. He attended First Baptist Church of Starks.

Survivors include his daughter, Paula Dianne Lormand, and five grandchildren and one daughter-in-law Julie Olson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Silar, and one son, Jerry Olson.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, in First Baptist Church of Starks. The Rev. Glenn Wagnon will officiate. Burial will be in the VFW Cemetery in Starks under the direction of Hixson-Snider Funeral Home. Visitation is 5-9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, in the church.

J. D. Brister

J. B. Brister, 78, died Aug. 13, 2007 in the DeQuincy Hospital.

He was born in Saratoga, Tex. and lived in DeQuincy, most of his life.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry Brister of Beaumont, Tex. and Jr. Brister and wife, Rhonda of Rogers, Ark.; three daughters, Rhonda Yellott and husband, Clinton, Jo Ann Marcantel and husband, Buck, and Sheila Perkins and husband, William, all of DeQuincy; one brother, Garland Brister of DeRidder; three sisters, Opal Turner of Rosepine, Evelyn Vance of Ohio and Sue Maddox of DeRidder; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Loretta Brister; one daughter, Kathy Yellott; five brothers; and one sister.

Services will be Wednesday, Aug. 15, at 2 p.m. in the Hixson-Snider Chapel. Rev. Ron Fox, pastor of Bible Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Whitaker Cemetery in DeRidder. Visitation will be Wednesday, Aug. 15, at 8 a.m. until time of service.

Tim LeDoux

The funeral for Tim LeDoux, 47, of Lake Charles, was held Friday, Aug. 10, at Robison Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Stuart Graves officiated. Burial was in Highland Cemetery.

Mr. LeDoux died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2007 in Lake Charles. He was a native of Sulphur, and former resident of Longville. He graduated from South beauregard High School in 1978 and served in the Louisiana National Guard.

He was a member of the Baptist faith. He was employed by ACME Truck Lines as the office manager for the past three years.

Survivors include his parents, Freeman and Pam LeDoux of Longville; brother, Mike LeDoux of DeRidder; sister, Leah Brown of Longville.

Alfred Porter

Alfred M. Porter, 78, of DeQuincy, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2007, at Houston Medical Center.

He was born in DeQuincy. He attended DeQuincy Colored School and DeQuincy Rosenwald School. He served in the Army.

He married Alice Lemon and they had three children, two sons, Terry J. Porter of Houston and Kennith M. Porter of New Orleans, and one daughter, Vanessa Porter-Thomas of New Orleans. His family also included, three step-children, Connie, Stephon, and Diedre Walton; one sister Adell Bryant Tillis of Kinder; and eight grandchildren.

His funeral was held Saturday, Aug. 11, in Bethel AME Church. the Rev. Margaret E. Simms officiated. Burial was in Community Cemetery in DeQuincy.

Katelyn Craft

Katelyn Adrianna Craft, 2 years old, died Sept. 25, 2007 in her residence.

Katelyn was born in Lake Charles and lived in DeQuincy. She was and is still an inspiration to so many people from all around the world.

Her will to live and to fight this disease she was born with touched many thousands of hearts along the way. Katelyn's journey was one of strength and innocence, she won her battle with such dignity and is now healed, mind, body and soul.

The precious smile that she had all those many months ago is now back on her face and she is also able to see again. She is able to see the beauty that heaven had waiting for her.

Katelyn came to us an angel and lived her life as such until the time that the Lord came back to claim her as His own. How blessed we are as her family to have been able to love and care for this beautiful little girl.

She knows that the word love will always be that, no time will come when we will say we loved Katelyn. It will remain we love Katelyn for eternity. (Even though Katelyn never spoke a word through her mouth, she spoke wonders through her heart.)

Survivors include her parents, James and Jessica Craft of DeQuincy; grandparents, Dennis and Neva Craft of DeQuincy, and Henry and Mavis Holley of DeQuincy; great-grandmother, Jane Rogers of DeQuincy; one sister, Jailyn Faye Craft of DeQuincy; and a host of other family and friends.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept, 27, in the Hargrove Pentecostal House of Praise. Rev. David Kennon and Bro. Jerry Hext officiated. Burial was in Good Hope Cemetery under the direction of Hixson-Snider Funeral Home. Visitation was held Wednesday, Sept. 26, at the church.

Biven Jones

Biven Estell Jones, 90, died Friday, Sept. 21, 2007. She was a native of DeQuincy.

Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 28, at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home in Sugarland, Tex. with the Rev. Cathy Richardson officiating. Burial was in Memorial Oaks Cemetery.

Mrs. Jones’ late husband, Edison L. Jones, operated a trade school and furniture factory in DeQuincy following World War II. They moved to the Houston area about 50 years ago.

She is survived by her four children, Gayle and husband Jim Schmidt of San Antonio, Tex., Gretchen Walker of Simi Valley, Calif., Laddie and wife, Elaine Jones of Sugar Land, Tex. and Ricky and wife, Marilyn Jones of Houston, Tex. seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

William Land

William Wesley “Bill” Land, 70, a native of DeQuincy and resident of DeRidder, died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2007, at Riverside Hospital in Alexandria. He was Catholic. He was also a member of AARP. He served his country proudly in the U. S. Air Force.

Known by all who love him as “Bill”, he will forever be remembered as a kind and loving man that loved life and lived it to the fullest.

He loved working in his garden, washing cars, fishing, hunting, LSU Football and country music.
Above all that he loved in this life, nothing compared to the love he had for his family. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him and each life that he touched in his own special way.

He was the son of the late Warner Land and the late Sylvia Land.

He is survived by his wife of over 45 years, Mae Perkins Land of DeRidder; one daughter, Renee Brocato and husband Alan of Ball; two sons, James Land of DeRidder and Cecil Land and wife Rebecca of Deville; two sisters, Sharon Rozas of Moss Bluff and Mary Land of Lake Charles; three brothers, Jim Land of Fort Walton Beach, Fla. Winston Land and wife Caroline of Lake Charles, and Donald Land and wife Dale of Sulphur.

He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Brittany Brocato, Kasey Brocato, Russell Brocato, Dalton Land, William Land, Faith Land and Amanda Land.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Bobby Land, Warner Land, Tommy Land and Harry Lee Land; two sisters, Irma Land and Katherine Land Perkins.

The family received friends from 5-10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, and from 10 a.m to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29.

Funeral service was held at Christensen Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, with the Rev. Carl Wheatley and Rev. David Kennon officiating. interment was in Good Hope Cemetery in Singer.

Christensen Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.

Lewis Hicks

Lewis G. Hicks, 79, of Ragley, died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2007, in a local facility.

Bro. Hicks was born in Woods ide, and was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Longville and was also a retired Baptist minister.

He is survived by his wife, Verna Gordon Hicks of Ragley; one son Ricci Waynon Hicks and wife Suzette of Longville; four daughters, Rebecca Louise Hammond and husband Vince of Kansas City, Mo., Patricia Lin Wiley and husband Fred II of Ragley, Karen Alisa Lowrey of Columbia, S. C., and Karla Kay Coleman of Parachute, Colo.; and five grandchildren.

His funeral was held Saturday, Sept. 29 in the First Baptist Church of Longville. The Revs. Johnny Johnson , Stuart Graves, Arthur Rockett and Jake Mulican officiated. Burial with military honors was in Magnolia Cemetery in Ragley.

Martha Buck

Life of a Virtuous Woman

May 5, 1924 in Gurley, Louisiana , God’s love was evident when He blessed Jessie and Nettie Gayden with a beautiful baby girl. God sent his angels to retrieve his earthly possessions on Oct. 9, 2007. He saw her suffering and so tired and said “Enough, it’s time to bring my child home.”

She was baptized at an early age, at the Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Hankins.

Martha married her life long love, Isiah Buck, Jr. She graduated from Grambling College in 1958 where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. She worked in Vinton, Louisiana for five years, and also in DeQuincy for 15 years. Due to health reasons, she retired after 20 years from Calcasieu Parish School Board. She was active in the Clarence Walker Substance Abuse Center, local NAACP, and a member to the Retired Teachers’ Association and Ministers Wives Association. Martha also worked as a teacher for the Headstart Program.

She was a lifelong member of the Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church where she served in many capacities. Some of which included: The Mission Department, the Deaconesses, The Greeter, and as personal secretary and prayer companion to her late husband Reverend Isiah Buck.

Martha Buck was a faithful and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved beautiful clothes and hats.

On Tuesday Oct. 9, 2007, the spirit of Martha Buck departed this life to rest in the Heavenly Realm of Our Almighty God.

She leaves to cherish her wonderful memories, two children, Patricia (Howard) Harrington of District Heights, Maryland and Delicia (Daniel) Marburgh of DeQuincy, Louisiana ; two sisters, Aell Gayden and Albertha Brown; one sister-in-law, Jessie Gayden, one brother-in-law, Clarence Thomas, all of DeQuincy, Louisiana ; grandchildren, Isiah, Brian, Daniel, Danielle and Adrienne; nine great-grand children; a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jessie and Nettie Gayden; her husband, Reverend Isiah Buck, Jr.; her sister Augustine Armstead; and her brother Jessie Gayden Jr.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 20 at 11 a.m. at Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church. The Rev. Marvin L. Durgan will officiate. Burial will be at Paradise Cemetery in DeQuincy.

Donald Mericle, Sr.

Donald Mericle, 74, died Friday Oct. 12, 2007 in a local hospital.

Mr. Mericle was born in Oretta. He retired from the State of Alaska Department of Transportation.

He is survived by his wife, Bobbie Lee Ellis Mericle of DeQuincy; one son Donald Mericle, Jr. of DeQuincy; one daughter Sandra Mericle of DeQuincy; two brothers James Mericle of Alaska and Marvin Mericle of Sulphur; two sisters Pauline Aguillar of Fredrickburg, Tex. and Eloise Cassell of Lake Charles; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents and one sister Elaine Goff.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 16, at Hixson-Snider Funeral Home Chapel in DeQuincy. Rev. T. D. Cardwell, Sr. officiated.

Danny Duplichan

Danny Duplichan, 56, of Westlake died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2007 in a local hospital. He was a carpenter most of his life.

Survivors include his wife, Dean Duplichan of Westlake; four sons, Danny Duplichan and wife Terri of Elton, Shannon Duplichan, Brian Duplichan and Kevin Duplichan, all of Westlake; two daughters, Annette Dawsey of Westlake and Crystal Duplichan of Baton Rouge; three brothers, Jerry Duplichan of Ragley, Mike Duplichan of Kinder, and Jody Duplichan of Kinder; five sisters, Deborah Sharp of DeQuincy, Vickie England, Sheila LeJeune, Carolyn Touchet, and Marilyn Presley, all of Kinder; and eight grandchildren.

His funeral was held Tuesday, Oct. 16, in Hixson Funeral Home of Westlake, Deacon Garrett Caraway officiated. Burial was in Green Oaks Cemetery in Kinder.

Fred Brown

Fred Lavern "Bo" Brown, 75 a native of Ragley and a resident of Dequincy, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2007, at Christus St. Patrick-Dubuis Hospital in Lake Charles. He was the son of the late William Brown and the late Marciadel Granger Brown. He was a member of The Pentecostal Church of Dequincy. Known by his friends as "BO", he will forever be remembered as a kind man that loved life and lived it to the best of his ability.

He was an easy going man that took life as it came and made the best of each situation. Bo loved squirrel hunting with his wife and together they made a great team, he would shoot and she would clean and cook.

He was an employee of Davidson Sash and Door in Lake Charles for over 40 years, retiring in 1994. Having built two homes for his family, he was a perfectionist when it came to tile, trim and other finish carpentry. He lived and taught his children to have a high work ethic and the motto "If you are gonna do something, do it right the first time."

Bo was a beloved husband, father and grandfather and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him and each life that he touched in his own special way.

He is survived by his loving wife of over 54 years, Lavon Brown of Dequincy; two daughters, Fredia Brown and Pam Brown; one son, Clifford "Leon" Brown and wife Michele, all of Dequincy; one sister, Mary Koonce of Lake Charles; one brother, David Brown of Longville; one grandson, Patrick Healy of Chicago, Ill.

He is also survived by his faithful canine companions, Shelba, Oscar, Zoey and Puppy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Susan Brown; six brothers, Ralph, James, Eugene, Johnny and Frank Brown and one infant brother.

The family received friends from 5 to 10 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, at Christensen Funeral Home. Visitation resumed from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31, at The Pentecostal Church of DeQuincy. Funeral services were held at The Pentecostal Church of DeQuincy at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 31. The Rev. G. David Hennigan and the Rev. Dale Welch officiated. interment was in Hinson Cemetery in Knight.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Luke Williams, Dr. Albert Chinn, Dr. Abu Shamat, Dr. Jalal Joudeh and the staff at Christus St. Patrick-Dubuis Hospital in Lake Charles, for their kindness and love shown to them during four years.

Linda Drescher

Linda McKnight Drescher, 60, of Columbus, Tex., died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007 at Ben Taub Hospital in Houston. She was a native of Beaumont and longtime resident of Corpus Christi before moving to Columbus six years ago.

She is survived by her husband, David William Drescher of Columbus; daughter, Kristie Weaver and her husband, Daniel; father and mother, Wilburn “Shorty” and Joyce McKnight; sisters and brother, Melissa Littlepage, Melanie “DeeDee” Sims, and Bryan McKnight, all of Lumberton.

Mrs. Drescher was a granddaughter of the late Jay Royer McKnight and Curly of Oretta. She was a niece of Aline Main of Oretta.

Her funeral was held Jan. 3 at 11 a.m. in Beaumont, Tex. Rev. Steve Kerr officiated. Burial was in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
