Joslin Pullard

Joslin Clanton “Jossy” Pullard, 55, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, in a local hospital.

She was a native of Farm Haven, Miss., and lived in DeQuincy for most of her life. She graduated from L. W. Higgins High School in 1970. She was a member of First Church of God in Christ.

She is survived by one daughter, Thedra Pullard of DeQuincy; four sons, Jarvis Pullard and wife Sheila of Lake Charles, Mayanus Pullard and wife Sonja of Dallas, Ga., Isadore Pullard and wife Evelyn and Howard Pullard Jr., all of DeQuincy; her mother, Nellie Clanton of Jackson , Miss.; two brothers, Jessie and Eric Clanton, both of Harvey; two sisters, Linda Francis of Jackson and Lisa Ramirez of Irving, Tex; and nine grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, Isadore Clanton.

Her funeral was held Tuesday, Jan. 8, in First Church of God in Christ. The Rev. Clifton David officiated. Burial was in Paradise Cemetery.

Benton Threet

Benton Melvin Threet, 89, of the Cumberland Homesteads Passed away on Friday, Dec. 21, at his home. He was born on Jan. 1, 1918 in Davidson, tenn., the oldest son of Will and Mary Threet. He would have been 90 years old on Jan. 1, 2008.

At the age of seventeen, in 1935, he moved to the homestead with his family being selected by the federal government to be one of the original homestead families. He worked as a water boy and later worked on the construction of the Homestead Tower.

He entered the U. S. Navy in 1942, serving on the U.S.S. Leonis as bosuns mate and was discharged in November of 1945.

He returned home and married Mary Sue Marsh in 1950 and they moved to Pontiac, Mich. where he was employed by General Motors for many years. After retirement he moved back home to care for this elderly mother until her death.

He leaves three children, William Benton Threet and wife Joyce of Crossville, Mich., Tom Threet and wife Tina of DeQuincy, and Marcia Threet Strong and husband Rex of Armada, Mich.; eight grandchildren, Leah Threet of Crossville, Marc Threet of Rhea County, Tyler Threet and Tracey Shoemake, both of DeQuincy, and Susan Smart and husband David and Sara Chrouch and husband Gus of Michigan, Michael Strong and wife Kara and Shelly Strong Hopper and husband Jim; three great-grandchildren, Tod Campbell, Elizabeth and Billie Chrouch, all of Michigan.

Marcia moved into the home with her dad and was his special caregiver for over a year.

He is also survived by two brothers, Vinston Threet and wife Frances and Walter Threet and wife Gail of Crossville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Sue; two sisters, Wanetta Threet and christine Emory; and two brothers, Denton (Doc) Threet and Clinton (Tank) Threet.

He was a member of the American Legion and the Crossville Masonic Lodge #483. He was also a Shriner and a member of the Scottish rite. He was a faithful member of The Meridian Baptist Church where he served as a greeter for many years.
“Daddy Benton” or “Papa” as he was called by his grandchildren will be missed by all. He often attended family dinners with Wm. Benton and Joyce’s family where he will be remembered for telling his old navy stories and all the good laughs we had.

The family would like to thank Dr. John Sherrill, Dr. Dirk Davidson, all the nurses and home health care personnel who helped care for our dad in many different and caring ways.

A special thanks to Bro. and Sis. Hennigan and the church family of The Pentecostal Church of DeQuincy for their many prayers and thoughtfulness.

Wilfred Harmon

Wilfred Harmon, 74, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008, in his home.

He lived his entire life in DeQuincy.

Survivors include his companion, Alice Glass of DeQuincy; daughters, Cynthia Morgan (Emmett) of DeQuincy; brother, Ty Harmon; sisters, Octavia Reeves, Mildred Harmon and Ester Harmon; and four grandchildren.

His funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, at Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Rodney Williams will officiate. Burial will be in Community Cemetery under the direction of Hixson-Snider Funeral Home of Dequincy.

Bruce Little

Bruce Lee Little, 55, of Ragley died Friday, Jan. 4, 2008, in a Lake Charles Hospital.

He was born in Burundi, Africa and lived in the Lake Charles/Ragley area most of his life. He was a 1970 graduate of Marion High School and a member of the Trinity Church of the Nazarene. He worked throughout the world as a captain of supply and tug boats.

He is survived by his wife, Edna Perry Little; two sons, Allen B. Little and Michael L. Little and wife, Katie, all of Ragley; his parents, Leroy and Gene Little of Moss Bluff; three brothers, Kerry Lynn Little of Mobile, Ala., Glenn Alan Little of Brandon, Miss., and Eldon Ray Little of Houma. A brother, Gerald Ivey Little, preceded him in death.

His funeral was held Monday, Jan. 7, in the Trinity Church of the Nazarene n Gillis. Burial was in Magnolia Cemetery in Ragley.

Della Manuel

Della Cormier Manuel, 74, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008.

She was a native of Jennings and lived most of her life in Westlake. She was a member of Catholic Daughters, Ladies Auxiliary, Ladies Altar Society and Rosary Group at St. John Bosco Catholic Church. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary American Legion Post 407.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce J. Manuel, and a son, Michael J. Manuel.

Survivors include two sons, Bruce Chris Manuel and Don Manuel, both of Westlake; five daughters, Margaret Duhon of Singer, Lorena Miller of Big Lake, Theresa Boudreaux of Sweetlake, Elza Velez of Midwest City, Okla., and Patricia Pyle of LeBleu Settlement; 20 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Her funeral will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 9, from St. John Bosco Catholic Church. Monsignor Jace Eskind will officiate. Burial will follow in Westlake memorial Park Cemetery.

Mary Malus

Mary June Call Malus, 79, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2007, in a Lake Charles hospital.

Ms. Malus was born in New Orleans and had lived in Lake Charles since the early 1960s. She was a graduate of Ursuline Academy and Sophie Newcomb College, both in New Orleans. She worked for the state of Louisiana in the women’s public health field for the majority of her career. She was a longtime member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

Ms. Malus was a founding member for the ACTS Theatre, where she held leading roles in a number of plays.

She is survived by her sons, Jean Paul Malus and wife Charlotte of Leander, Tex. and Pierre Malus and wife Debbie of DeQuincy; daughters, Julie Parham and husband John Burt of Lake charles and Eugenie Tullos and husband Andy of Leander; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Thursday, Jan. 3, in the Cathedral of The Immaculate Conception. The Revs. Aubrey Guilbeau and Alan Trouille officiated. She was cremated prior to the service.

Lloyde Jackson Pearce

Lloyde Jackson Pearce, 63, a native of Sylacauga, Ala. and a resident of Singer, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2008, at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital in Lake Charles. He was Pentecostal by faith. He was a life member of V. F. W. Post 3802, Fire Commissioner of Beauregard Parish Fire District 1 and a Good Hope Cemetery Board member.

He served his country proudly in the United States Army having served three tours during the Vietnam War. Lloyde will forever be remembered as a quiet and kind man that loved life and lived it to the best of his ability. Above all, nothing compared to the love he had for his family. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him and each life that he touched in his own special way.

He was the son of the late Mac Pearce and the late Clara Haynes West.

He is survived by his loving wife of over 35 years, Linda Pearce of Singer; four sons, Lloyde Jackson Pearce II of Sylacauga, Ala., Craig Pearce and wife Angie of Dequincy, Jason W. Pearce and Jeff Pearce, both of Singer; one sister, Susan Carden and husband Butch of Sylacauga, Ala.; one brother, Randall Pearce and wife Judy of Woods tock, Ga.; two grandchildren, Benjamin Pearce and Alicen Pearce, both of DeQuincy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Alice Pearce and one brother, Kenneth Pearce.

The family received friends from 5 to 10 p.m., Sunday, Jan 6, at Christensen Funeral Home in DeQuincy. Visitation resumed from 9 to 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 7, at The Pentecostal Church of DeQuincy.

Funeral services were held at The Pentecostal Church at 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 7, with the Rev. G. David Hennigan and the Rev. Dale Welch officiating. Family tributes were delivered by the Rev. James Vandergriff. interment was at Good Hope Cemetery in Singer.

Todd Maddox

Todd Maddox, 47, a native of Lake Charles, and resident of Dequincy, died Sunday, March 23, 2008, at his residence. He was a member of The Pentecostal Church of DeQuincy.

Todd will forever be remembered as a quiet man that had a very giving spirit. He loved fishing and baseball and had a wonderful sense of humor. Above all that he loved in this life, nothing compared to the love he had for his family. To his children he will forever be remembered as "The world’s greatest dad"; To his parents he was "As fine a son as anybody could have"; and to his brother he was "a loving and caring man".

Todd will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him and each life that he touched in his own special way.

He was the son of Aubrey and Frances Hydle Maddox of Dequincy.

He is also survived by his wife of 16 years, Renee Maddox of Dequincy; two sons, Stephen Paul Maddox and Jacob Todd Maddox, both of Dequincy; one brother, Stephen Maddox and wife Janet of Dequincy; one sister, Debbie Parker of Dequincy.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Travis and Hilda Maddox and his maternal grandparents, Oscar and Ruth Hydle.

The family received friends from 5 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, at Christensen Funeral Home in Dequincy. Visitation will resume from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, at The Pentecostal Church of Dequincy.

Funeral services will be at The Pentecostal Church at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 26. Rev. G. David Hennigan will officiate. interment will be in Masonic Cemetery in Dequincy.

Sophie Cole

Funeral services for Sophie L. Adams Cole, 44, of DeQuincy, were held Saturday, March 22, at Bethel AME Church in DeQuincy. The Rev. Margaret E. Simms officiated.

Burial was in Community Cemetery under the direction of King’s Funeral Home.

She died Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at her home. She was a member of Bethel AME Church and was active in the Church Youth Dept., was a choir member, Sunday School Teacher and DMC Commissioner for AME Church.

She was a graduate of DeQuincy High School and McNeese State University.

Survivors include her mother, Darlene Adams Nelson of DeQuincy and daughter, Sietra Harvey of DeQuincy and one sister Michelle Brady of Oakdale.

J. LaRoyce McDonald

Funeral services for J. LaRoyce “Mac” McDonald were held Thursday, March 20 at Carmel Baptist Church with Revs. Don Gauthier, Tim Merritt and John Everett officiating. Burial was in Wise Chapel Cemetery in Ruby. He was a native of DeQuincy.
McDonald, 71, of Pineville, died Monday, March 17, 2008, at this residence.

He was a member of Carmel Baptist Church and worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 45 years as a carman inspector.

Survivors include his wife, Lorna Eloise Griffin McDonald; sons, James LaRoyce McDonald, Jr. and wife Kwela, Wilburn Lamar McDonald and wife Joyce, Michael Stuart McDonald and wife Timonee, Christopher Alan McDonald and wife Tammie; sister, LaVon Dunham Deal, 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Ruby Pierce

Ruby Annette Pierce, 52 died Friday, March 21, 2008 in the DeQuincy Care Center.

She was born in Eunice, and lived in DeQuincy.

Survivors include six aunts, Dorothy Lee, Lila Couteter, Gail Farris, Verna Pickering, Evelyn Bonmon and Miriam Massie; eight uncles, Calvin Hyatt, Ronnie Pierce, Kenny Pierce, Carl Pierce, Jr., Tommy Pierce, Roger Pierce, Robert Pierce, and Donnie Pierce; a brother, Johnaton Pierce and a cousin, Veronica Lee, all of DeQuincy.

A memorial service was held at Hixson Snider Funeral Tuesday, March 25. Don Duplechain officiated.

Debbie Ragle

Debbie Jean Ragle, 50, of Longville, died Saturday, March 22, 2008.

Visitation began Tuesday , March 25 at Broadlands Bible Church of DeRidder and will continue Wednesday, until time of service Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 26, at Broadlands Bible Church. The Rev. Mark Land will officiate. Burial will be in Barentine Cemetery in Longville.

Survivors include her husband, Albert Ragle of Longville, six daughters, Monaca Sarvaunt, Lucinda Stewart, and Fawna Stewart, all of DeQuincy, Tabitha Dunseith of Topsy, Jennifer DeHart of Longville, and Terri Fafard of Houston; four sisters Mary Franklin of DeQuincy, Valerie Sears of Deweyville, Virginia Hyatt of Lake Charles and Angelica Bailey of Moss Bluff; three brothers, Kenneth Franklin and Steven Franklin, both of DeQuincy and David Franklin of Patterson and 13 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Leila Franklin; brother, Johnny Franklin; grandmother, Cora Beaumont and grandson, Baby Jay.

Harvey Johnson

On April 26, 2008 Bro. Harvey Johnson , 86, achieved his greatest victory. He died in Christ. He was born on September 21, 1921 to the union of Lewellyn and Lizzie Johnson in Kirbyville, Texas . He was raised and educated in Weirgate, Texas . Following his graduation from high school the family moved to DeRidder, Louisiana n where he was employed by Crosby Chemical Plant until he was drafted into the United States Army during World War II. He served in England, France and the Philippines. He retired from Civil Service at Fort Polk, Louisiana .
He was baptized into the body of Christ in 1961 where he remained a good servant in the kingdom until his health failed. So the man who was affectionately known as, "Big Shot" has more than earned his promotion of glory. Now he has taken his sabbatical, now he has entered into the rest promised by the Hebrew writer. He was a unique personality that we shall miss, yet his influence in the Lord's Church will live on.
Preceding him in death were his parents, four brothers, one sister, his wife Eula Mae Johnson and one daughter, Regina Johnson - Clarida. he leaves to mourn his passing three children, Virgil Gail Johnson - Riley (Melvin) of Bowie, Maryland; Lynette Johnson of Wilmington, Delaware; Eddie Paul Johnson of Houston, Texas ; two adopted children, Vivian Puckett and Keith Bryant of DeRidder; a loving niece, Wanda Faye Johnson of DeRidder; 7 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, May 3, 2008 at Beauregard Church of Christ in DeRidder. Brother Jasper Newsome will officiate. Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Friday, May 2, 2008 at Myers Colonial Funeral Home in DeRidder. Burial will follow at Community Cemetery in DeRidder.

Gerry Poisson

Gerald “Gerry” Poisson, 62, of Merryville, Louisiana Passed away on Saturday, April 26, 2008 in Merryville.

Visitation will be Monday, April 28, 2008 at Myers Colonial Funeral Home in DeRidder from 4:00 – 9:00 PM and from 10:00 AM until time of service on Tuesday, April 29, 2008. Funeral Services will be Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at Myers Colonial Funeral Home in DeRidder, LA at 2:00 PM. Burial will follow at Newlin Cemetery in Singer, LA. Officiation the service will be Bro. Dalton Isabel and Bro. Jimmy Glass.

Survivors include his wife: Alice Poisson of Merryville, LA; Sons: Brian Poisson of Detroit Mich. & Patrick Poisson of Detroit, Mich.; Daughters: Elizebeth Growder, of Detroit, Mich. And Victoria Smith, of Detroit, Mich.; Brothers: Pierre Poisson of La Guana, CA, Steve Poisson of Canada, Doug Poisson of Canada and Don Poisson of Canada; Step-Sons: Tony Ray of Sulphur, LA, Glenn Ray of Merryville, LA and Chris Doyle of Singer, LA and 17 GrandChildren and 2 Great GrandChildren.

Chase Andrew Christman

Due to an explosion at the LNG Plant in Lake Charles, LA, Chase went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 22, 2008. Visitation will begin Friday, April 25, 2008 at 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM at the First United Pentecostal Church of DeRidder, LA and will continue on Saturday, April 26, 2008 at 10:00 am until time of service at 2:00 PM. Funeral services will be Saturday, April 26, 2008 at 2:00 PM at the First United Pentecostal Church of DeRidder, LA. Burial will follow at Beauregard Cemetery in DeRidder. The Revs. Zale Lewis; Joseph Johnson and Kevin Reeves will officiate.
Chase is survived by his Father: David Christman, Jr., and spouse Betty of St. Charles, MO; Mother: Karen Williams and spouse Durwood of DeRidder, LA; Sisters: Cameron Christman of DeRidder, LA and Brianne Lovins of DeRidder, LA; Maternal Grandparents: Danny and Kaye Owens of DeRidder, LA; Paternal Grandparents David and Betty Christman, Sr. of Winnfield, LA: Bartes and Mildred Alphin of Sherwood, AR and Maternal Great Grandmother: Mona Bea Johnson of DeRidder, LA.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the First United Pentecostal Church Building Fund, Post Office Box 301, DeRidder, Louisiana 70634 or Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency, 4441 N. I-10 Service Road, Metairie, LA 70006.

John Riley Sharber

John Riley Sharber, 73, of DeRidder Passed away Sunday, April 13, 2008 at a local hospital.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Maria Sharber of DeRidder, LA; a daughter, Tina M. Valigura & husband Ronney of Weatherford, TX; Son, John R. Sharber, Jr. & Fiancee’ Helen Griffin of Lake Charles, LA; 5 Grandchildren, Antoinette M. Nelson, Travis Pitre, Dustina Sharber, Marlene Holcomb & Kalene Holcomb; 2 Great Grandchildren, Kaileanna Hodge & Skylar Hodge; Sister – in – Law, Anna Boanca of DeRidder, LA and family by heart, David & Lisa Harper of Sugartown and their two children Hunter & Dawson Harper.
Memorial services for John Riley Sharber will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at Myers-Colonial Funeral Home. interment will be held at Whitaker Cemetery at a later date.
