Bessie Ashworth

Bessie Ann Ashworth, 83, of Starks, Passed away on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011 at her residence.

She was a native and life long resident of Starks; born on Mar. 10, 1928 to parents John P. and Eliza (Humble) Gillis. She was a life long member of First Baptist Church of Starks.

She enjoyed going camping, traveling with husband, Luke and going fishing. She loved spending time with her family and her cat, Rosie; Bessie will be dearly missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Luke Richard Ashworth; parents, John and Eliza Gillis; grandson, Dexter Ashworth II; brothers, Aubrey and Lawson Gillis.

She is survived by her sons, Danny Ashworth and wife, Debbie, Michael Ashworth and wife, Barbara, Dexter Ashworth and wife, Sandy all of Starks; sister, Marie Moore of Spring, Tex.; brothers, Dewey Gillis, Marvin Gillis and Ronald Gillis all of Starks.

Also left to cherish her memory are grandchildren, Michelle Ashworth of Orange, Sheree Ashworth of Vinton, Danny Lee Ashworth Jr. of Starks, Arettann Ashworth of Moss Bluff, Leanna Congdon of Big Woods , Michael Ashworth of Starks, Nolan Ashworth of Starks, Richard Ashworth of Starks; great-grandchildren, Luke And Callie Ashworth, Josie Blankenship and one on the way, Reagan Elizabeth Congdon.

A special thank you to Ray and Tinker Bass for all the help and care they gave to our loved one.

Visitation was held on Friday, Sept. 23, from 5 until 9 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Starks. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 24, at 10 a.m. at the church, with Rev. Chris DuBose officiating. Burial followed at Gillis Family Cemetery in Starks. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Dorman Funeral Home, Orange, Tex.

Ollie Broussard

Ollie Louise Reynolds Broussard, 87, of Lake Charles, formerly, Creole died Monday, Sept. 19, 2011 at her residence.

Mrs. Broussard was born and raised in Lamesa, Tex. She lived nearly 60 years in Creole and the past six years in Lake Charles.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry L. Broussard and wife Charlotte of Ragley and Robin E. Broussard and wife Kathy of Lake Charles; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Jack Reynolds of Pocatello, ID.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Loomis “Nunu” Broussard; her parents; two brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 24, in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Father Wayne LeBleu officiated. interment followed in Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Cemetery in Creole. Father Tim Goodly officiated.

Howard Royer

Howard Edward Royer, 92, a native and resident of DeQuincy died Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011, at the Louisiana War Veterans Hospital in Jackson . He was a member of Temple Baptist Church for 40 years. He served in the Army during World War II.

Howard loved gardening, rabbit hunting, smoking his pipe and rocking on the porch. He also loved to tell stories and spend time with his grandchildren.

He was the son of the late Nathaniel Royer and the late Irene Rigmaiden Royer.

He is survived by his two daughters, Kathy Marcantel and husband Dan and Kyra Cooley and husband "JJ" of DeQuincy; one son, Keith Royer and wife Lisa of DeQuincy; one brother, Medford Royer of DeQuincy; Ernie and Sherry Jordan of Jasper, Tex. whom he loved as his very own; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 59 years, Essie B. Royer; one son, Perry Royer; two brothers, Phillip Royer and Barney Royer; five sisters, Opal Haley, Azalee Dunham, Bertha Ellis, Vergie Dunham and Vercie Wagner.

Arrangements were handled by Christensen Funeral Home, Inc., DeQuincy.

Visitation was held at Christensen Funeral Home Friday, Sept. 23, from 5 until 9 p.m. and resumed from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, with Bro. Charlie Willis and Bro. Bob Colquette officiating. interment was at Alston Cemetery in DeQuincy.

Joyce Williams

Joyce Marie Dahlquist Williams, 78, died Wednesday Oct. 19, 2011 at a local hospital.

She was a native of DeQuincy and life long resident of Sulphur. An educator, Mrs. Williams was an undergraduate of the University of Louisiana , Lafayette and received her Masters degree from McNeese State University. She was a third grade school teacher at E. K. Key Elementary in Sulphur for 32 years, she retired in 1988. Mrs. Williams and her husband, Harold, were founding members of the South Sulphur Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Harold Williams; one sister, Margaret Franks; and two brothers, Raymond Dahlquist and Kenneth Dahlquist.

Survivors include her two sons, Arnold Russell Williams and wife Janet of Fields and Chester Keith Williams and wife Shena of Jackson ville, Fla.; one daughter, Brenda Joyce Littleton and husband Walter Virgil of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two brothers, Dr. Wilbur Lynn Dahlquist of Moss Bluff and Bobby Dahlquist of DeQuincy; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Her funeral was held Saturday Oct. 22, at DeQuincy Church of Christ. The Rev. Paul Evans officiated under the direction of Hixson-Snider Funeral Home. Burial was in Bivens Community Cemetery in Bivens.

Gloria Lonidier

Gloria Lonidier, 77, of Westlake died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011, in a local care center.

She was a native of Sasser, Ga. and had been a resident of the Westlake area for over 40 years, coming from Washington State.

Survivors include two sons, Charles Lonidier and wife, Vicky of Round Rock, Tex., and Robert Lonidier and wife, Jolane of Ragley; two daughters, Janie Keeler and husband, Mark of New Albany, Ind., and Pammy Simon of Moss Bluff; one brother, Jimmy Varner of Albany, Ga.; one sister, Louise Johnson of Albany, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Tammy Marie Lonidier.

Her funeral was held Friday, Oct. 21, in Hixson Funeral Home of Lake Charles. The Rev. Chris Fusilier officiated. Burial was in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Pineville.

Michael McMillian

Michael Wayne McMillian, 51, of Ragley was born in Plainview, Tex. and died Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011 at his residence in Ragley.

Mr. McMillian worked offshore for many years as an electrician for Global Industries in Carlyss. He was a member of Living Faith Fellowship.

He is survived by his wife, Diane McMillian; his mother, JoAnn Futrell; his daughters, Mindy Zehler, Christa Pendley, Misty Futrell; one son, Michael Futrell; sisters, Pat Lundgren, and Barbara Ramos; brother, Ricky McMillian; and two granddaughters.

Mr. McMillian was preceded in death by his father, Oliver (little son) McMillian and son, Richard A. Pendley.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 19, at Hixson Funeral Home Chapel in DeRidder. Rev. Corey James Burleigh officiated. Burial was in Magnolia Cemetery in Longville.

Jacob Barks

Jacob Todd Barks, 21, of Starks, Passed away on Nov. 5, 2011. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Nov. 21, 2011 at 10 a.m. at First Pentecostal Church of Starks with Rev. Greg Frazier officiating.

Burial will be in the Barnes and Barks Family Cemetery in Starks. The family will receive friends on Sunday, Nov. 20, from 5-9p.m. in First Pentecostal Church in Starks and will resume on Monday in the church at 8a.m. until time of service.

Jacob was a native and lifelong resident of Starks. After high school he went to work as a welder’s helper on pipelines. He also worked with his grandfather doing carpentry work. Jacob loved to hunt and fish and was a very kind and loyal son and friend.

Jacob is survived by his parents; Todd and Laura Barks, brother; Tyler Barks and paternal grandparents; R T and Jackie Barnes all of Starks. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents; Rae and Marvin Woods .

A memorial fund has been set up at Capital One Bank for Jacob Todd Barks if anyone would like to make a donation.

Laura Buckley

Laura Elaine Buckley, 68, of Orange, Tex. died Monday, Nov. 14, 2011 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont.

She was a native of Starks. She had lived in the Orange area since 1963. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Starks.

She is survived by her daughter, Tammy Dowden and husband, Mark; sons, Johnny Buckley and Dustin Buckley, both of Orange; sister, Patsy Hyatt of Starks; brothers, Elton Brindley, Harold Brindley and Eric Brindley all of Starks; twin brother, Edward Brindley of Allen, Tex.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held on Thursday, Nov. 17, at First Baptist Church of Starks. Burial was at Doyle Cemetery in Starks.

Shirley Hyatt

Shirley Hyatt, 79, of Singer, died Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011, at Lake Charles Memorial in Lake Charles.

She was a lifelong and faithful member of The Pentecostal House Of Praise. She lived her life by example and was a testimony to all who knew her.

She will be remembered as a very generous, modest and loving woman. She loved sewing, working in the yard and took pride in her flowers. Above all that she loved in this life, nothing compared to the love she had for her family.

She was the daughter of the late Charles Pitre and the late Madora Cating Pitre.

She is survived by her three daughters, Janice Mitchell of Ragley, Peggy Newman and husband Mickey and Tina Hyatt, all of Singer; three sons, Donald Hyatt and wife Mary, Ronald Hyatt and wife Senith, all of Singer, and Thomas Hyatt and wife Kelly of Orange, Tex.; one sister, Anna Bell Pharris of DeQuincy; one daughter-in-law, Janice "Sissy" Hyatt of Singer; 17 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 41 years, Edward Hyatt; son, Edward "Wayne" Hyatt; grandson, Carl Lynn Stampley; great-grandson, Ryan Burgess; four brothers, J. D. "Nix" Pitre, Charles "Buddy" Pitre, A. V. Pitre, and Joe Brosette; three sisters, Lola May Pitre, Viola Pitre and Avey Martin.

The family received friends from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, at The Pentecostal House of Praise.

Funeral service was held at The Pentecostal House Of Praise at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, with Pastor David Kennon and Rev. Anthony Kennon officiating. interment was at Hyatt Cemetery in Fields.

Eudora Cooley

Eudora Mae Cooley, 85, Of Conroe, Tex. died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Cooley; her parents, James LeRoy and Alice Bowman; two brothers; and three sisters.

She is survived by her children, Janice C. Airey and husband Scott M. Airey of Montgomery, Tex., Jean Rich and husband Fred Rich of Rosharon, Tex. and Jerry Wayne Cooley and wife Marjorie of Singer; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She graduated from Greenwood High School in Shreveport and her family moved to Singer in 1944.

Following brief residences in San Antonio, Tex., DeQuincy and Lake Charles, she and her husband settled on their farm in Singer.

She worked at the Air Base in DeRidder as well as the cafeteria at Singer High School, the Social Administration office in DeRidder and the Beauregard Parish Agriculture office.

She was a member of Singer Baptist Church for many years.

In 2003 she relocated to Hearthstone Assisted Living in Conroe, Tex.

Funeral services were held at Singer Baptist Church Saturday, Dec. 17. Graveside services followed at Newlin Cemetery in Singer.

Joyce Pullin

Joyce Markham (Fleming) Pullin, 86, of Ragley died Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011 in her residence.

She was born in Baton Rouge. She was raised in Orange, Tex. She moved to Ragley in 1958.

She was a member of Magnolia Baptist Church, PTA at Ragley High School and South Beauregard, Order of the Eastern Star, Beauregard Cattleman’s Association “Cow Belles,” Beauregard Bicentennial Committee, Beauregard Planning Commission, Elder of First Presbyterian Church, Lake Charles and President of Presbyterian Women.

She is survived by her husband, Gerald Edward Pullin of Ragley; daughters, Delanie Lois Pullin Cooley, Camella Mae O’Dell (Daniel) and Mary Lee Childress (Eddie), all of Ragley; sister, Gladys Mae Parrish; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Conrad and Lois Fleming.

Her services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 21, at 2 p.m. at the Magnolia Baptist Church of Ragley. Brother Mike Sanford will officiate. Burial will be at Magnolia Cemetery.

Roselma Bartlett

Roselma Bartlett, 91, of Sulphur died Thursday, Apr. 19, 2012, in a local care center.

Mrs. Bartlett was a pastor's wife for over 50 years and felt that God had called her to that ministry. She taught Sunday School, Training Union, worked with Vacation Bible Schools, Women's Mission organizations and served in countless other ways throughout her life. Next to her service for the Lord, her family was her top priority. She made every family member feel special and well loved from children to great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and her special "adopted" children. She loved to help and serve others.

Mrs Bartlett went back to McNeese late in life, graduated at the age of 50 and started a teaching career that lasted over 20 years. She was the kind of teacher a student never forgot for she truly tried to make a positive impact on each life she touched.

Mrs. Bartlett enjoyed reading, gardening, travel, family time, and especially swimming.

Survivors include her daughters, Meredith Bartlett Mahalak of San Antonio, Fla., Vida Robertson and husband Mark, of Sulphur, and Barbara Bartlett Ream and husband Bill, of Sulphur; son, Joseph W. Bartlett, Jr. and wife, Billie, of Calcasieu; brothers, Ben Talbot and wife, Sally, of Lake Charles, and Robert Talbot and wife Pat, of Moss Bluff; sister-in-law Dorothy Talbot of Lake Charles; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Joseph W. Bartlett; mother, Mary Vida Fisher Talbot; father, Mount William Talbot; sister, Margie Talbot; brother, Bill Talbot; and grandson, Tyler Bartlett.

Her funeral was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Apr. 22, in Hixson-Sulphur Memorial. Dr. David Holder officiated. Burial was in Masonic Cemetery in DeQuincy. Visitation was from 3-8 p.m. Saturday and from 12 noon until service Sunday, all at the funeral home.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Virginia Lamar for her loving care and to the staff at High Hope Care Center for their compassionate care over the past three years.

Justin Streams

Justin Streams, sometimes called "Too Short", 56, of DeQuincy, born to Matt and June Streams died Wednesday morning, Apr. 18, 2012 at his home.

He lived all his life in DeQuincy and graduated from Fields High School. He worked for the City of DeQuincy when he got out of high school and then for 29 years at Alton Box, which kept changing its name, until he became disabled and could no longer work.

He loved to go camping with his Daddy, Matt and brother, Craig. He had lots of good memories at their camp on Sabine River. Justin was a die hard Dallas Cowboys Fan. He and his wife Shirley spent their Thanksgiving Holidays going to Texas Stadium.

Justin will always be remembered for his smile and that laugh. He loved people and didn't meet a stranger. He loved spending time with his wife, his mom and the rest of his family and Shirley’s family. He loved watching wrestling and football games on TV. He loved to travel and got to visit all 50 states of the U.S.A. He believed in God and was a member of Hargrove Bible Baptist Church.

Justin is survived by his wife, Shirley Myers Streams; his mother, June Dickerson Streams; brother, Craig Streams and wife Priscilla; two nieces, Kim and Kaysha; two great nephews, Kyle and Kamron; uncles, aunts, and cousins on the Dickerson and Streams families. And he loved each of them. He loved Shirley’s family. He loved being with them.

He was preceded in death by his Daddy, Matt Streams; his grandparents, Tom and Rosie Streams and W. E. (Monk) and Ava Dickerson.

His funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday Apr. 21, at Snider Funeral Home Chapel with Harry Methvin and Scott Streams officiating. Burial was in Perkins Cemetery under the direction of Hixson-Snider Funeral Home.

Visitation was held Friday Apr. 20, from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. and continued on Saturday from 9 a.m. until service time.
