Pete Royer

On May 18, 1932 our dad Pete Royer came into this world. On July 20, 2014 he joined our mom in Heaven. He fought a long and hard battle after having a stroke over 11 years ago that left him bedridden.

Dad was born to Washie "Pete" and Norma Royer on May 18, 1932 in DeQuincy. He was a graduate of DeQuincy High School. While there dad played football and was also a member of the band. While playing football dad earned All-State honors playing Center. At halftime dad would remove his pads and march with the band. After high school, dad joined the United States Army where he achieved the rank of Sergeant with the Military Police and proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict.

When his tour of duty ended, dad attended both USL (now ULL) and LSU. During his college days at LSU, his dorm room was in Tiger Stadium. Dad was a huge LSU Tiger fan, and always shared stories about his time there, especially about hearing Mike the Tiger roaring at all hours of the night. While attending USL, he met our mom Betty Joyce Mahtook. Not long after, they eloped to Mississippi and got married. Mom and dad were happily married for over 50 years.

"Pete", as he was known by everyone, was preceded in death by our mom, Betty Mahtook Royer; his parents, Washie "Pete" and Norma Royer; and his brother, Dr. Maurice Royer.

He is survived by his four children, eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. His oldest son, Carl Royer and wife, Portia and their two children, Hayden and Krystal, all of Lafayette; his second son, Steve Royer and wife, Nancy and their children, Monique, Marisa, Justin, and Monique's daughter, Ayla, all of Flowery Branch, Ga.; his daughter Susie Royer Breaux and husband, Dwight Breaux and their children, Chelsea and Brandy Breaux Mitchell and husband Randle, all of Lafayette; and finally his youngest son, Mark of Lafayette and his daughter Katie of Baton Rouge.

Dad was a huge offshore fisherman and his favorite pasttime was participating in the offshore fishing rodeos all along the Louisiana gulf coast. The fish he most targeted was the Tarpon. Dad along with his late fishing partner, Milton Dupont where a force to reckoned with when they were teamed together. Pete was a past President of the Louisiana Tarpon Club and the South Marsh Island Tarpon Club. He was a dedicated employee of Massart Supply where he worked for over 30 years.

To his children and grandchildren he was known as "Mr. Fix It", bring it to Paw Paw, he can fix it. Our dad was a caring and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. A man who touched everyone's heart he came in contact with. Dad was always a jokester, had a quick wit and you would consider yourself lucky if he would give you straight answer. He was a great guy who will be missed by all he came into contact with. . . Love ya Dad!

A very special thanks to our little brother, Mark, who was always there for our mom when she was ill and our dad, for caring for him the last 11 plus years. Thanks Mark. To our sister, Susie and our brother-in-law, Dwight, who helped out in too many ways to mention. Thanks Susie and Dwight. And finally to his caregivers, Lisa, Dee and Fatima who provided exceptional care to our dad like he was their own.

We would also like to give a huge thanks to the 9th floor nurses and staff at Lafayette General Medical Center, who cared for our dad during the last week of his life. You guys were great. A special thanks to Dr. Alexander for keeping us updated and helping us through some very tough decision making. Also to Dr. Juan Perez for his years of taking care of our dad.

As per our dad's request, there will not be any formal services. Since our dad was a huge saltwater fisherman, we are asking everyone who wishes to, to make a donation to CCA in his memory. Please do so by sending it to the Coastal Conservation Association of Louisiana , in Memory of Pete Royer, P.O. Box 86458 Baton Rouge LA 70879 or by contacting them at 225-952-9200 to make your donation. We thank you in advance for any and all donations made in his name.
