Byron Gilbert
Funeral services for Mr. Byron Clay "Tap" Gilbert will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden with the Rev. Roy D. Strother officiating. Burial will follow at Old Minden Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 until 8 p.m. today, March 1, at the funeral home.
Mr. Gilbert, a resident of Minden, Passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, at LSU Medical Center in Shreveport following emergency surgery for a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm. He was born Oct. 21, 1930, in the Hortman Community and grew up in Minden playing basketball and baseball. A graduate of Minden High School, he attended Northwestern University and later worked as the Wonder Bread man, at the LAAP, in various construction-related businesses and in real estate. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, and coached Dixie baseball in Minden for many summers.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ann Brantly Gilbert in 1994.
He is survived by two sons, Rusty and wife Carolyn Gilbert of Lisbon and Andy and wife Faith Gilbert of Minden; one daughter, Lisa and Tom Farmer of Lafayette; one brother, James "Buddy" and Trini Gilbert; five sisters, Helen and husband Durrell Sanders, Elizabeth Ambrose, Kate Thomas, Ysleta Kranz, and Nell and husband Harlan; three sisters-in-law, Lily Gilbert, Madeline Gilbert and Vanice Harmon; seven grandchildren, Christy, Amy, and Casey Gilbert, Clay Roberts and Sammy Farmer, and Eleanor and Abigail Gilbert; and many nephews, nieces and friends.
Pallbearers will be Gil Harlan, Hal Harlan, Huies Gilbert Jr., Bill Gilbert, Tommy Harrison, Fred Mills, John Tucker and Tommy John Hughes.

Minnie Harris
Funeral services for Mrs. Minnie Ella Harris, 75, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Valley Springs Baptist Church in Minden with the Rev. Ray D. Jiles officiating. Burial will follow at Valley Springs Cemetery in Minden under the direction of Miller-Pioneer Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held from 7 until 8 p.m. today, March 1, at the funeral home.
Mrs. Harris, a resident of Minden, Passed away Sunday, Feb. 24, at Willis Knighton Medical Center in Shreveport.
She is survived by her sons, Mack Walker of Drew, Miss., and Earnest Harris Jr. of Benton; daughters, Cheryl and Denise Harris of Minden; brother, June Cosby Jr. of Minden; sisters-in-law Dorothy Cosby of Minden and Georgia Cosby of Minden; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchildren.

Edward Johnson III
Funeral services for Mr. Edward Keith Johnson III, 19, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 3, 2002, at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden with the Rev. Bill Crider officiating and the Rev. Dwight Wesson assisting. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 2, at the funeral home.
Mr. Johnson , a native of Shreveport and a resident of Doyline, Passed away Wednesday, Feb. 27, in Doyline. He was a roughneck for Sawyer Drilling Co.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Ralph Maness and grandmother, Hazel Doris Johnson .
He is survived by his mother Karen Cook Powell of Doyline; stepfather, Tom Tobin of Sibley; father Edward Keith Johnson II and stepmother Saralyn of Shreveport; grandparents, Martha Maness of Doyline and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Posey of Minden; girlfriend, Deanna San Angelo of Benton; brothers, Justin Lee Johnson , Bryan Kelly Herndon and Robert Myles Herndon, all of Shreveport, and Gus Powell of Heavener, Okla.; aunts Mickey and husband Monty Banks, Erin and husband Scott Maness, Cindy and husband Bruce Gray, Brenda and husband Charles Pinkston, Diane and husband Dewey Wiltheis, Kathy and Steve Salter and Joyce Posey, all of Minden; uncles Carl and wife Dee Johnson of Fort Worth, Texas ,; Vaughn Johnson and Van Johnson , both of Minden, Tommy and wife Lori Johnson of Minden, Charlie and wife Leslie Posey of Shreveport; numerous cousins; and many friends.

James Cottle Jr.
Graveside services for Mr. James Cottle Jr. will be held at 4 p.m. today, Feb. 28, 2002, at Woodard Cemetery with the Rev. Elizabeth Love officiating. Services are under the direction of Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Arcadia.
Mr. Cottle, a native of Rolling Fork, Miss., Passed away Tuesday, Feb. 26, at Willis-Knighton Health Center after heart bypass complications. He was born Oct. 18, 1934. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, where he served his country from 1952 until 1956. He attended boot camp at Parris Island, S.C., and made his tour of duty in Japan, Korea, Pearl Harbor, Camp LeJeune and Camp Pendleton. He was honorably discharged and then moved to Louisiana . He met and married his wife of 43 years, Gloria June Reno Cottle. Of this marriage came two great sons, Dennis Cottle of Gibsland and James Kevin Cottle of Dubberly.
Mr. Cottle was a father and best friend to his sons. He was like a father to his daughter-in-law, Debbie Cottle. He will always remain in a special place in her heart.
He is survived by one very special person, his grandson, J.D. Cottle III, who meant so much to him, and was his fishing and hunting buddy since he was old enough to go with "Papaw."
He loved anything to do with hunting, fishing or shooting guns. He was a charter member of M.S. Jones Hunting Club, which he helped originate in the early 1960s. Later the club incorporated with Dixie Hunting Club.
He retired from Gulf Oil Corp. in the early 1980s, then later went to work for Bienville Parish Police Jury as a district road foreman until final retirement. He will be sadly missed by all his family and friends.
Pallbearers will be Edward Magee, Jim Kidd, Richard Jones, James Stewart, Scott Kidd, Charles Tucker, Dale Shaw and John Mark Parnell. Honorary pallbearers will be Keith Jellum, Nick Bowman and The Dixie Hunting Club.
Memorials may be made to Woodard Cemetery in Taylor or Gibsland United Methodist Church in his name.

Ross Isaac
Funeral services for Mr. Ross Isaac will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at Benevolent Funeral Home in Minden. Burial will follow at New Hope CME Church Cemetery in Minden.
Family hour will be held from 6 until 7 p.m. today, at the funeral home.

Ethna Maxey
Funeral services for Mrs. Ethna Stewart Maxey, 94, were to be held at 10 a.m. today, Feb. 27, 2002, at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden with the Rev. Jack Maxey officiating. Burial will follow at Lane Memorial Cemetery in Sibley.
Mrs. Maxey, a native of Marshall, Texas , and a resident of Sibley, Passed away Monday, Feb. 25, in Shreveport. She was a housewife and a member of Yellow Pine Christian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford J. Maxey.
She is survived by her sons, Jack Maxey and wife Shirley of Sibley, Leon Maxey and wife Sue of Shreveport and Dr. Sam Maxey and wife Linda of Shreveport; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Myrtle McCarty
Funeral services for Mrs. Myrtle Pierce McCarty, 91, were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden with Larry Nokes and Garland Hughes officiating. Burial followed at Whispering Pines Cemetery.
Mrs. McCarty, a native of Wood County, Texas , and a resident of Cotton Valley, Passed away Saturday, Feb. 23, in Shreveport. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Monroe A. McCarty.
She is survived by her son, Clifford Leon McCarty and wife Sherryl of Orange, Texas ; daughters, Evaline Edwards of Cotton Valley, Glennie Bearden and husband James of Cotton Valley and Billie Jean Sinclair and husband Carl of Cotton Valley; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives.

Herman Vaughn
Graveside services for Mr. Herman Isac Vaughn, 94, were held Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at Owensville Cemetery in Benton, Ark.
Mr. Vaughn is survived by his wife of 71 years, Clebia Vaughn of Minden; brother, Wiley Vaughn of Benton; and two grandchildren, John Maxim Bush IV of Little Rock, Ark., and Ann Cumpton of Minden; and three great-grandchildren, Annalise Bush and Candace and Cassie Cumpton.

Jimmie Wayne Giles
Funeral services for Mr. Jimmie Wayne Giles, 58, were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at Bailey Funeral Home in Springhill with the Rev. Kenny Waites officiating. Burial followed at Springhill Cemetery.
Mr. Giles, a resident of Cotton Valley, Passed away Wednesday, Feb. 20, at his residence following a short illness. He was a lifelong resident of Cotton Valley.
He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Giles; and two brothers-in-law, Randolph King and Shorty Riley.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Giles of Cotton Valley; son, Richie Giles and wife Beckie of Cotton Valley; two daughters, Jamie Crumpler of Sarepta and Lori Duck of Sarepta; mother, Lillia Giles of Cullen; three brothers, Tommy Giles and wife Lenora of Sarepta, Jack Giles and wife Joyce of Sarepta and Doyle Giles and wife Sue of Pitkin; four sisters, Gennett King of Sarepta, Patsy Riley of Cullen, Deloris Hart and husband Wayne of Springhill and Dottie Segebarth and husband Tim of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; and six grandchildren, Chance, Jonathon and Emily Duck, and Tabitha, Stephanie and Jacob Giles.
Pallbearers were Delane Hicks, Ray Myers, Billy Joe Riley, Glen Crumpler, Jeffery Beshea, Jamey Cole, Tommy Osborn and David Alford.

Dorothy Hurley
Graveside services for Mrs. Dorothy Lee Nation Hurley, 89, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at Minden Cemetery with the Rev. Bill Ichter officiating. Services were under the direction of Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden.
Mrs. Hurley, a native and resident of Minden, Passed away Friday, Feb. 22, in Homer. She was a retired nurseís assistant at Schumpert Medical Center and a member of First Baptist Church in Minden. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was born Sept. 5, 1912 in Minden, the daughter of Alexander Briscoe Nation and Ethel Sanders Nation.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alwyn Doyle Hurley; her parents; two brothers, Oree Bert Nation and Alexander Briscoe Nation Jr.; and three sisters, Fern Booth, Lois Stanley and Helen Logan.
She is survived by one son, Gary Neal Hurley and wife Nita of Diboll, Texas ; one daughter, Carol Waurynne Neely and husband Martin of Springhill; two sisters, Virginia Nation of Arcadia and Evelyn Moak of Wilmington, Del.; four brothers, Caston Nation and wife Della of Greenville, Texas , Donald Eugene Nation of Sibley, Patrick Cary Nation and Daniel Webster Nation and wife Kathryn, all of Minden; four grandchildren, Brenda Grissom of Springhill, Keith Welch of Heavener, Okla., Kevin Hurley of Diboll, Randy Gill of Speeley, Calif. and Colin Hurley of Diboll; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Myrtle McCarty

Letha Ritter
Funeral services for Mrs. Letha McClellan Ritter, 94, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden with the Rev. Ron D. Cathey officiating and the Rev. Ronnie Whitlock assisting. Burial followed at Gardens of Memory Cemetery.
Mrs. Ritter, a native of Plain Dealing and a lifelong resident of Minden, Passed away Tuesday, Feb. 19, in Bedford, Texas . She was a graduate of Normal College in Natchitoches, teaching school at Rocky Mount School, third and fourth grades. She was a very active member of Beech Springs Baptist Church, Sunday school teacher, WMU, and loved working with children. She was also a member of the Home Demonstration Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Melvin C. Ritter; son, Calvin E. Ritter; parents, Walter Ivy and Mattie Lula Johnson McClellan; brothers, Douglas McClellan and Travis McClellan; and sisters Myrtle Durrett and Mildred Woods .
She is survived by her daughter, Judy R. Pendleton of Bedford; grandsons, Scott E. Pendleton of Bedford and Kevin A. Pendleton and wife Brenda of Arlington; great-granddaughters, Ashley and Chelsea; sisters, Mary E. Cathey of Simsboro and Doris Heard of San Antonio, Texas ; and a host of special nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Richard Durrett, Don Durrett, Doug Durrett, David Johnson , Rod Odom and Glen Ritter.

Paul Sherrard
Funeral services for Mr. Paul E. Sherrard were to be held at 10 a.m. today, Feb. 25, 2002, at First United Methodist Church in Arcadia with Dr. Wayne Evans and the Rev. Robert L. Peyton officiating. Burial was to follow at Simsboro Cemetery under the direction of Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Arcadia.
Mr. Sherrard, a native of Jackson Parish, Passed away Friday, Feb. 22. He went into the auto parts business in 1932 after graduating from high school. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1941 and served until 1945. He returned to Monroe and to the auto parts business until 1960 when he moved to Arcadia with his family and opened Arcadia Auto Parts. He became very active in public life. He served eight years on the town council and on every other board and commission for the town. He also served on the board of commissioners that built the new Bienville General Hospital and served on the board of directors of First National Bank for many years. He was active in the Chamber of Commerce and served as a representative to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. He served his church in positions including the administrative board. He served as a justice of the peace after the injury of a friend and he was honored by the House of Representatives and the Senate of the state of Louisiana .
One of his most prized accolades was the Heritage Award presented in 1991, shortly before he retired. He also has a distinction of hitting the first golf ball on the Trails End Golf Course in Arcadia.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin E. Sherrard and Emma Simpson Sherrard; his wife of 59 years, Edith Weir Sherrard; and two sisters, Hazel S. McKee and Gayle S. Hogan.
He is survived by his daughter, Stephanie S. Thornton and husband Jerry; son, Gary P. Sherrard and wife Rebecca; grandchildren and great-grandchildren Diane Greeson and her daughter India; Charles Feazel and wife Lesa and their children Brittny and Charles; Katie Sherrard and Kevin Sherrard of Ruston; Colby Sherrard and Andrew Sherrard of Minden; three brothers, Wright Sherrard and wife Dagmar of Florida; James Sherrard and wife Pearl of Texas ; and E. Ray Sherrard and wife Alice of Mississippi.
Memorials can be made to First Methodist Church in Arcadia or to the Methodist Childrenís Home in Ruston.

Nell Strickland
Funeral services for Nell Strickland, 74, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at Farrar Funeral Home in Farmerville with the Rev. Larry White officiating. Graveside services were held at 4:30 p.m. at Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Minden.
Mrs. Strickland, a resident of Farmerville, Passed away, Friday, Feb. 22. She was a retired business owner of Peopleís Department Store in Farmerville. She was a graduate of Minden High School and a member of First Baptist Church in Farmerville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Strickland; parents, George and Louise Smith; and brother, George Smith Jr.
She is survived by one son, Jim Strickland and wife Judy of Farmerville; one brother, Alvin Smith of Minden; one sister, Wanda Stewart of Minden; two grandchildren, Chris Strickland and wife Paula of Farmerville and Casey Strickland of Monroe; and four great-grandchildren.

Olevia R. Baker
Funeral services for Mrs. Olevia R. Baker will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at Mt. Calm Baptist Church in Minden. Burial will follow at Sheppard Street Cemetery in Minden under the direction of Benevolent Funeral Home.
The remains will lie in state at noon prior to services.

Jimmie Wayne Giles
Funeral services for Mr. Jimmie Wayne Giles, 58, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at Bailey Funeral Home in Springhill with the Rev. Kenny Waites officiating. Burial will follow at Springhill Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. today, Feb. 22, and from 8:30 a.m. until time of services Saturday, at the funeral home.
Mr. Giles, a lifelong resident of Cotton Valley, Passed away Wednesday, Feb. 20, at his residence following a short illness.
