Mary Lee Smith
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Lee Smith will be held at noon Saturday, July 5, 2003, at St. Mark Baptist Church in Doyline.
She is survived by her daughter, Lynda Marshall and husband Karl of Bossier City; son, Anthony Smith of Doyline; grandson, Deonte Marshall; four sisters, Ella Mae Chambers of Princeton, Lucille Hamilton of Bossier City, Rosie Lee Wheeler of Doyline, Betty Feaster of Bossier City; four brothers, L.C. Smith and wife Pauline, Eddie Smith Jr. of East Paloalto, Calif., Otis Smith and wife Bertha of Doyline, Mack Henry Smith and wife Helen of East Paloalto; four aunts, Ella Ma Jackson of Oakland, Calif., Theresa Lewis of Oakland, Byreatha Smith and Mary Battle, both of Doyline and special friend Grant Jones of Doyline.

Margaret Turner
Memorial services for Mrs. Margaret Ruth Germond Turner were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church in Minden with the Rev. Joe Hunter officiating. Prior to her memorial service, she was laid to rest at Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
Mrs. Turner, a native of Waco, Texas and a resident of the Minden area for many years, Passed away Wednesday, June 25. She was born Aug. 4, 1911, daughter of George Frederick Germond Sr. and Elizabeth Work Germond. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and lived in New Braunfels, Texas , for the past three months.
Mrs. Turner graduated from the Waco Public Schools with honors in 1928, and was an honor graduate from Baylor University in 1931. She started teaching at 19 years of age. Her brother remembers the two of them driving up and down farm roads trying to convince school board members she was old enough to teach school.
Her life's search was always to help others. She was born a teacher and was a "teacher of youth," from Latin to Math. She taught grades K-6, and Sunday school in Venezuela, while her husband worked for Atlantic Richfield from 1948 until the mid 1960s.
The Honorable Tom DeLay was a former student in Venezuela, and he called her recently from Washington , D.C. She continued her career at other locations upon their return to the United States.
While in Minden, she was an AARP Area Representative, Citizen of the Year, participated in the Foster Grandparent Program, and FUMC's Fifty Plus. Many former students have kept in contact with her, especially the 1975 yearbook staff of Vilonia, Ark.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Joseph Turner in 1979.
She is survived by her brother, Kenneth Germond and wife Kay of Austin, Texas ; many nieces and nephews including Martha Luck, Janice Moreland, George Frederick Germond III, Margot Taunton, Kenneth Robert Germond, Nancy Germond, Claire Germond, Ellen Germond and Cindy Jeffers; and great-nieces and nephews.
Many friends in Minden, especially Lorene Sullivan, helped care for her in her later years. Our family is very appreciative of the loving caregivers at Alterra Sterling House in New Braunfels and Hope Hospice, also in New Braunfels.
In lieu of flowers or other gifts, the family requests donations by made to a favorite charity or church.

Margaret Forshee
Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Whatley Forshee, 91, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 27, 2003, at First Baptist Church in Cotton Valley with the Rev. Kenny Joyner officiating. Burial will follow at Cotton Valley Cemetery under the direction of Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of services, Friday, June 27, at the church.
Mrs. Forshee, a native of Winnsboro, Texas , and a resident of Cotton Valley for the past 65 years, Passed away Monday, June 23, in Vivian. She was an Avon representative and was a 50+ year member of the Cotton Valley Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Forshee; brother, Lloyd Whatley; infant sister; brother; and grandson, Richard Sullivan.
She is survived by her son, Loahman E. Forshee and wife Helen Clay of Clearwater, Fla.; daughters, Billie Jean Sullivan and husband J. Wayne of Cotton Valley, Geraldean F. Wade and husband Dennis of Vivian; sisters, Maxine Hamilton of Linden, Texas , Lucille Steed of Idaho; brothers, Woody Whatley and Hugh Whatley, both of Linden; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Louise Carlisle
Funeral services for Mrs. Louise "Weizie" Carlisle, 58, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden with the Rev. Scott Laliberte officiating and the Rev. Jeff Flennikan assisting. Burial will follow at Lane Cemetery in Sibley.
Visitation will be held from 5 until 10 p.m. today, June 24, at the funeral home.
Mrs. Carlisle, a longtime resident of Sibley, Passed away Sunday, June 22. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Sibley for many years. She was a dedicated and loyal employee of H&R Block for 28 years. She spent her life loving and giving to others. Her smile blessed many people, for it never left her. Through good and bad times, she always looked for the best and never gave in to the troubles of the world. She loved her Lord and led many people to do the same. She will be missed, but heaven has gained a special angel.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Carlisle.
She is survived by her son, Master Sergeant William Richard Carlisle Sr. and wife Nilda, who are stationed at Yokota Air Base in Japan; daughter, Sonjia Brunson and husband Jay of Fryeburg; four grandchildren, Michael Jay Brunson Jr., Bill Carlisle Jr., Harlie Brunson, and Jarred Carlisle; mother, Martha Fish of Sibley; three sisters, Jane Harris and husband Benny of Heflin, Kay Davis and husband Richard of Sibley, and Becky Anglin and husband Lonney of Sibley; two brothers, William Fish and wife, Ruby of Sibley, and Andy Fish and wife Robin of Sibley; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers will be Johnny Harris, Billy Fish, Phillip Harris, Peanut Davis, Robert Miller and Mike Albritton.

Eddie Ray Hewitt
Funeral services for Mr. Eddie Ray Hewitt, 32, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at Fellowship Baptist Church in Dubberly with the Rev. Mike Crump officiating. Burial will follow at Fellowship Cemetery in Dubberly under the direction of Rockett Funeral Home in Ringgold.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of services at the church.
Mr. Hewitt, a resident of Dubberly, Passed away Sunday, June 22. He was born Aug. 24, 1970, in Minden.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Cleveland and Luda Adkins.
He is survived by his wife, Tammy Hewitt of Dubberly; mother, Shirley Hewitt of Minden; one son, Matthew Hewitt of Dubberly; one daughter, Emily Hewitt of Dubberly; father and mother-in-law, Doyle and Sue Barnes of Dubberly; brother-in-law, Jeff Barnes and wife Donna of Dubberly; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Ruby Rice
Funeral services for Mrs. Ruby Jewel Rice, 56, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 26, 2003, at Mt. Calm Baptist Church with the Rev. T. A. Knapp officiating. Burial will follow at Growing Valley Cemetery under the direction of Kennon's Mortuary in Minden.
Visitation will be held Wednesday June 25, at the funeral home.
Mrs. Rice, a native of Minden, was born March 2, 1947. She went home to be with the Lord, June 21, in Shreveport.
She is survived by her husband, Charlie Rice of Minden; two sons, Tarus Allen and Antonio Allen, both of Minden; father, George Capers of Cotton Valley; eight grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Eleanor Smith
Funeral services for Mrs. Eleanor Green Smith, 89, will be held at 2 p.m. today, June 24, 2003, at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden with the Rev. Bill Ichter officiating and the Rev. Roy Strother assisting. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery.
Mrs. Smith, a native of El Dorado, Ark., and a resident of Minden, Passed away Sunday, June 22, in Minden. She was a retired bookkeeper for State Farm Insurance after 25 years, and in 1990, she was selected as Minden's Woman of the Year.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Archie Lee Smith.
She is survived by her son, Gary A. Smith and wife Sandra of Monroe; daughter, Patsy Garcin and husband Kenneth of Minden; sisters, Maurine Turner of Dallas, Texas , Trudy Bromell of Shreveport, Geraldine Clements of Farmerville; brother, Van Green of Longview, Texas ; grandchildren, Gary Garcin, Lee Gordon Smith, Stephanie Ann Smith, and Stuart Hughes Smith; great-grandchildren, Trevor, Taylor , Shelby, Trenton, Kalee, Connor and Bryant.
Pallbearers will be Gary Garcin, Lee Gordon Smith, Stuart Smith, Randy Brown, Jud Hale and the Rev. Bill Crider.

Leroy Bruner
Funeral services for Mr. Leroy Bruner, 70, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at 5 p.m. today, June 23, at the funeral home.
Mr. Bruner, a native and resident of Minden, Passed away Saturday, June 21, in Minden. He was retired from the United States Air Force.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jessie L. Bruner; second wife, Ruby Lee Bruner; and parents, Joseph and Edna Bruner.
He is survived by his daughters, Sharilyn Bruner and Barbara Bruner; sons, Leroy Hal Bruner and William Bruner; brother, Charles Bruner and wife Ideallie; sister, Frances Tucker; sister-in-law, Mable Bruner; grandson, Robert Cox and wife Sally; great-grandchildren, Brittney, Jeremy, Sydney and Garrett; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Schumpert Community Hospice or to the American Cancer Society.

Olevia Green
Funeral services for Mrs. Olevia Green will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2003, at Rocky Mount Baptist Church in Homer. Burial will follow at Mount Pisgah Cemetery in Homer under the direction of Benevolent Funeral Home in Minden.
Family hour will be held from 7 until 8 p.m. today, June 20, at the funeral home.

Enos Carr McClendon Jr.
Funeral services for Judge Enos Carr McClendon Jr. will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2003, at First Baptist Church in Minden with the Rev. Wayne DuBose, Dr. Ronald Prince, the Rev. David Dietzel and Judge Graydon Kitchens officiating. Graveside services will follow at Arlington Cemetery in Homer under the direction of Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden.
Visitation will be held from 4 until 7 p.m., Sunday, June 22, at the funeral home.
Judge McClendon Jr. was born Sept. 17, 1917, in Homer, completed a life marked by integrity, love, humor, and purpose on Monday, June 16. Following in the footsteps of his father, Judge Enos Carr McClendon Sr., and mother, Lurene Gray McClendon, he invested his life in his family, friends, community and church.
Judge McClendon served God faithfully through his church and community giving wise counsel to countless people. His wit and humor were good medicine to those he encountered, even during his difficult months of illness. He has passed into eternity, but his life lives on through all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Rogers McClendon, in 1991, whom he shared his life with for more than 50 years.
He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Laura Gordon McClendon; four children, Enos Carr McClendon III, Eloise McClendon Murchison, Roger Gray McClendon, and Kathy McClendon Hines; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and his extended family.
In lieu of flowers, gifts to First Baptist Church in Minden would be appreciated.

Albert Burkhalter Jr.
Funeral services for Mr. Albert L. "Al" Burkhalter Jr., 51, will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, June 20, 2003, at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden with Dr. Randy Hales and the Rev. Bill Ichter officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 until 9 p.m. today, June 19, at the funeral home.
Mr. Burkhalter Passed away Thursday, June 18, following a year-long courageous battle with cancer. He was born May 27, 1952. Except for the school year 1968-69, when his family moved to the New Orleans area and he attended John Curtis Christian School, he was a lifelong resident of Minden. He was a graduate of Minden High School.
Until his illness forced his retirement, he was employed by Fibrebond Corp. of Minden as a metal fabricator. Prior employment was the Louisiana Army Ammunition Plant, until it closed; Anglo Marine & Petroleum Equipment Partners of Shreveport; and Dunham Manufacturing Company of Minden.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Minden but attended Emmanuel Baptist Church in Minden where his wife and son are members.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening, but his favorite thing to do was to go deer hunting with his brother, Joe, behind his mother's home in Sibley.
He was preceded in death by his father, A.L. Burkhalter Sr., and his grandparents, Albert and Carrie Burkhalter, and Joe and Dera Murphy, all of Webster Parish.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sheila Garrett Burkhalter of Minden; two sons, Bert and Garrett Burkhalter of Minden; two daughters, Lauri Burkhalter Chandler and Shelby Burkhalter; two granddaughters, Nicole and Madison Chandler, all of Minden; mother, Jimmie Ruth Burkhalter of Sibley; one brother, Joe R. Burkhalter and wife Genie of Haughton; one sister, Nancy Burkhalter McDearmont and husband Joe of Shreveport; two dear aunts, Ellen Burkhalter of Minden and Nettie Murphy Noles of Sibley; three nieces; one nephew; three cousins; and a host of friends.
Pallbearers will be Neven Hooter, Huey Clement, Ronnie Semmes, Tommy Hathorn, Steve Toms and Ellis Michael.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Willis-Knighton Cancer Center and especially Dr. Joyce Feagin and Dr. Lane Rosen and their staffs for the caring treatment he received. Thanks also to Northwest Regional Hospice in Minden for their loving care of Al and his family.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Emmanuel Baptist Church or the donor's choice.

Gertrude Doyle
Funeral services for Mrs. Gertrude Gray Doyle, 57, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2003, at New Friendship Baptist Church with the Rev. W. W. Watson officiating. Burial will follow at Old Castor Cemetery under the direction of Kennon's Mortuary in Minden.
Visitation will be held Friday, June 20, from noon until 8 p.m. at the funeral home, and Saturday from 9:30 until 11 a.m. at the church.
Mrs. Doyle, a resident of Castor, Passed away Sunday, June 15, in Shreveport after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was born January 28, 1946. She was a faithful member of New Friendship Baptist Church, where she served as an Usher, Mother, and Deaconess. She worked at Castor High School for 14 years.
She is survived by seven children, Charles, Jacqueline, Alvin, Jr. and wife Rosalind, Mark and wife Sharon, Tracey, Rodney and wife Kim, and Stephanie; father, Leo Wilson, stepfather, O'Neal Anderson, Sr.; one sister, Verbia Gray; two brothers, O'Neal Anderson, Jr. and Caleb Anderson; 12 grandchildren; one great grandchild; and a host of other relatives and friends.
