James E. Jeter Jr.
Funeral services for Mr. James E. "Sonny" Jeter Jr. will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003, at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Minden.
Mr. Jeter, better known to his friends and family as "Sonny," Passed away Saturday, Aug. 30, just 12 days shy of his 82nd birthday. He was, without question, a true American hero. The Minden native, born on Sept. 11, 1921, served in the U.S. Air Force as a staff sergeant during World War II, where he was shot down over Germany and captured as a prisoner of war. He earned two purple hearts and a bronze star.
He was the former owner of Jeter's Garage and Minden Auto Parts, where he retired in 1993. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Minden. He served as a volunteer fireman for the City of Minden for 40 years. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Knights of Pythons and was a Mason.
Mr. Jeter was also a member of the 1938 state-championship football team at Minden High School, his alma mater. He enjoyed golf and being with his friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James E. Jeter Sr.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sybil B. Jeter; two daughters, Rebecca Anderson and husband Rodger L., and Elizabeth Lee and husband Ricky D.; three grandchildren, Robin A. Herman and husband Michael, Aaron S. Lee and wife Joanna, and Eric C. Anderson and wife Cori; and one great-grandchild, Gregory M. Herman.
Pallbearers will be William Hilburn, Fred Haynes, Matt Martin, Keith McClung, Ray Myers and Sammy Vaughn. Honorary pallbearers will be Tony Elzen, Dr. Phillip Hendry and Dr. Tom Alley.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Baptist Children's Home or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Danny Wayne Robertson
Graveside services for infant Danny Wayne Robertson, 1 year old, were to be held at 11 a.m. today, Sept. 1, 2003, at Haughton Cemetery with the Rev. Danny Warbington officiating. Services are under the direction of Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden.
Danny, a resident of Sarepta, Passed away Friday, Aug. 29, in Springhill.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Leslie Wayne Robertson.
He is survived by his parents, Michael Robertson and Charlon Robertson of Sarepta; paternal grandmother, Veronica Robertson of Princeton; maternal grandparents, Willie and Wandoni Miller of Minden; sister, Alexis Robertson of Sarepta; brother, Michael Lynn Robertson of Sarepta; and a host of other relatives.

Aubrey Faye "Shorty" Gardner
Aubrey Faye "Shorty" Gardner, 73, Passed away Thursday, August 28, 2003 in Hot Springs, Ark. after a lengthy illness. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 30, 2003 at Forest Park West Cemetery, Meriwether Road. Officiating will be Reverend Morris "Trey" Lewis, III of Norphlet, Ark.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Friday, August 29, 2003 at Rose-Neath's Southside Funeral Home.
Aubrey was born September 9, 1929 in Bearden, Ark. to Joseph and Annie Mae Gardner. He was a retired captain of the Shreveport Fire Department. He also owned United Insulators and United Fastener and Tool Co.
He was a veteran of the United States Army and an active member of the Shriners.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Joyce Lewis Gardner; son, Ronald l. Gardner; brothers, Henry Gardner, Silas Gardner, Melvin Gardner, Loyce Gardner, Orlen Gardner and sister, Dorsie Milligan.
Aubrey is survived by his son, Terry L. Gardner and wife Debbie of Minden; daughter, Twyla Gardner Hawthorne and husband Bryan of Shreveport; brother, Roy Gardner; sisters, Flossie Files, Marie Presley; grandchildren, Stephanie Hawthorne, Sean-Michael Hawthorne, Jennifer LaPierre, Tracy Stiener, Harold L. Gardner and special friend, Juanita Koffman.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Shriner's Childrens Hospital or Hope Youth Ranch in Minden.

Jonah Parker
Funeral services for the Rev. Jonah Parker will be held at noon, Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at Mt. Zion CME Church in Minden. Burial will follow at Wesley Grove Cemetery in Cotton Valley under the direction of Benevolent Funeral Home in Minden.
Family hour will be held from 6 until 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, at the funeral home.
The Rev. Parker was the ninth child born to Henry P. Parker and Viola Robinson Parker on July 11, 1912. He attended grade school at Cotton Valley and Concord Rosenwall Schools in McIntyre; high school at Central Colored High School in Shreveport; and finished college at Texas College in Tyler, Texas . He studied at Perkins School of Theology in Dallas, Texas .
He introduced the first Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration to be held in Minden and Webster Parish and served as general chairman for three years. His work and trust in the Lord and mankind made him presiding elder in the CME church for 24 years.
The Rev. Parker was dean of the Oakland District Leadership School for six years. He was president of the Taylor County NAACP in Abilene, Texas for four years. He pastored several churches of the leading CME churches including Central Chapel CME Church in Sacramento, Calif., and Missionary Chapel CME Church in San Francisco, Calif.
He was married to Rosa Mae Hunter Parker. Of this union, two children were born. Later in life, he remarried Rosa Mae Hunter Rice. He finished teachers' training at Webster Parish Training School under the leadership of Prof. J.L. Jones, and taught school in Webster Parish for several years.
He was one of many preachers to help Dr. King Jr. organize the Montgomery Bus Boycott and stayed there three months. He marched from Selma, Ala., to Montgomery, Ala. Since coming back to Louisiana , he has pastored Layman Temple CME Church in Bossier City, Lane Chapel CME Church in Homer, and New Hope and Webster Memorial CME Churches in Minden.
The Rev. Parker remodeled New Hope at a cost of $18,000 and remodeled St. Matthew CME Church on Highway 80 in Minden at a cost of $15,000. At the time of his death, he was the pastor of Anderson Chapel CME Church in Gibsland.
He received an honorary doctorate degree at Mt. Hope Theology Seminary in Houston, Texas .

Annie Smith
Funeral services for Mrs. Annie Faye Dutton Smith, 82, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden with the Rev. Wayne DuBose officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 until 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, at the funeral home.
Mrs. Smith, a resident of Minden for the past 11 years, Passed away Tuesday, Aug. 26, in Minden. She was retired from Highland Hospital, where she was the head of the payroll department. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Minden where she was very active in Sunday School and active in the Highland Hospital Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James M. Smith; parents; two brothers; one sister; and her granddaughter, Vicki Smith.
She is survived by her stepson, Larry J. Smith and wife Dollie of Hot Springs Village, Ark.; stepdaughter, Kathie Smith Crockett and husband David of Danville, Calif.; niece, Carol Dutton of Bossier City; special friends, Kirk and Dee Dee Kirkland, Richard and Jackie Roton, Joyce and Bill Thomas and the Glawson Gantt family; a host of friends; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Len Gantt, Steve Gantt, Keith Gantt, Jason Gantt, Jeremy Gantt, and Cloy Gantt.
Memorials may be made to Mt. Olive Christian School or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Virginia Harkey
Memorial services for Mrs. Virginia Pauline Harkey will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at Minden Church of Christ.
Mrs. Harkey Passed away Saturday, Aug. 23, at Town and Country Nursing Home in Minden.
She is survived by her mother, Paunell Merritt; two sisters, Wanda McEachern of Minden, Martha Adkins of Haughton; one brother, Darrell Merritt of Evergreen; two daughters, Kathy Bryant of Alabama, Annette Lynch of Tennessee; and two sons, LaWayne Lewis of Texas , David Jr. Isles of Denham Springs.

Mildred Kennon
Funeral services for Mr. Mildred Kennon were to be held at 1 p.m. today, Aug. 25, 2003, at Mt. Pero Baptist Church in Sibley. Burial was to follow at Fellowship Cemetery in Dubberly under the direction of Benevolent Funeral Home.
Mr. Kennon was born March 23, 1931, to Alice Turner and Clover Kennon. He attended Mt. Pero Baptist Church and received his education from Central High School. Mr. Kennon was retired from the United States military where he served in the Vietnam War.
He was preceded in death by his mother Alice Turner; father Clover Kennon; and only brother, Elmer Kennon.
He is survived by one nephew, Gary Kennon and wife Sue of Minden; two nieces, Beverly Kennon Thornton and husband Shelly and Regina Kennon Flournoy and husband Jimmy, both of Minden; one sister-in-law, Cora Kennon of Minden; two first cousins, Ozias Johnson of Bossier City and Robert Kennon of Schertz, Texas ; and a host of many friends and relatives.

W.G. "Grib" Monzingo
Funeral services for Mr. W.G. "Grib" Monzingo, 70, were to be held at 10 a.m. today, Aug. 25, 2003, at the Rose-Neath Chapel with the Rev. Lynn Malone officiating and the Rev. Hank Hamilton assisting. Burial was to follow in the Pine Grove Cemetery under the direction of Rose-Neath Funeral Home.
Mr. Monzingo, a native of Minden and resident of Webster Parish since 1933, Passed away Friday, Aug. 22. He retired from Western Electric in 1980 after 25 years of service. He was a member of Lakeview Methodist Church and a veteran of the Korean Conflict.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Aura and Myrtha Monzingo and brothers, Buddy, Jake and Bob Monzingo.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Peggy Miller Monzingo of Minden; two sisters, Katherine Reeves and Mary Graham and husband Don Mitchell, all of Minden; two sons, Brian Odom and wife Vicky of Evergreen and Keith Odom and wife Susan of Choudrant; two daughters, Candy Richards and husband Dewey of Minden and Tina Puckett and husband Chad of Minden; grandchildren, Bill and Brian Keith, Katelyn Odom, Lane and Keeley Odom, Cassie Monzingo, Anna Grace Gardner, Abby and Alex Puckett; one great-grandchild, Jaden Whorton; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were to be John Wayne Craig, Richard Dunn, Billy Jake Reeves, Bill Odom, Brian Keith Odom, Lane Odom and Alfred Sanders.

Mary Katherine Barton Moore
Funeral Services for Mrs. Mary Katherine Barton Moore, 67, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003 at the Rose-Neath Funeral Home Chapel in Minden with the Rev. J.C. Clements officiating and the Rev. George Ridge assisting. Burial will follow at Brushwood Cemetery under the direction of Rose-Neath Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held at 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.
A native of Mangrum, Mrs. Moore Passed away Saturday, Aug. 23 in Minden. She was a nurse's aid. She was also a Baptist.
She is preceded in death by brothers, Charles and Bobby Barton and sister, Laverne Springfield.
She is survived by sone, Doyle Moore of Shreveport; daughter, Carrie Denise Depriest and husband Mark of Athens; sisters, Gail Batton of Dubberly, Betty Perryman of Minden, Claudine Robinson of Winsboro and Earleane Rolen of Sea Graves, Texas ; brothers, Vernon Barton of Haughton, David Barton of Haughton and Donald Barton of Dubberly; six grandchildren, Austin Riley Moore, Lacey Moore, Joshua Stevens, Carrie Stevens, Ginny Stevens and Chloe Depriest; and two great-grandchildren, Christian Stevens and T.J. Authoment.
Pallbearers will be Timmy Batton, Kendall Batton, Willie Perryman, Daniel Barton, Glen Barton and Steve Perryman.

J.C. Walker Sr.
Funeral services for Mr. J.C. Walker Sr., 88, were to be held at 11 a.m. today, Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at Palestine Baptist Church in Gibsland with Rodney E. Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Old Athens Cemetery in Athens under the direction of Kennon's Mortuary.
Visitation was held today from 10 until 11 a.m. at the church and Sunday, Aug. 24 from noon until 8 p.m. at Kennon's Mortuary.
Mr. Walker, a resident of Minden, was born Feb. 28, 1915 in Homer to the late Luke and Fronie Austin Walker. He Passed away Thursday, Aug. 21 in Minden.
Mr. Walker served in the United States Army during World War II as a sharpshooter. He was also an usher at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents and wife, Mittie Mae Walker.
He is survived by his children, Yvonne Booker and husband Johnny of Gibsland, Joel Walker Jr. and wife Zenoria of Fort Worth, Texas , Janet Douglas and husband Johnny of Minden and Maxine Mitchell of Minden; five grandchildren, Tasha Walker, Kendrick Walker, Louella Douglas, Mileta Booker and LaMarques; two great-grandchildren, Tyre Walker and Dehkobe Debose; sister, Fannie Pearl Scott of Minden; brothers, Luke Walker of Mecede, Calif., Napoleon "Blake" Walker of Dayton, Ohio, and Willie J. Walker of Yosemite, Calif.; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A.G. Green
Funeral services for Mr. A.G. "Biggie" Green, 74, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, at Growing Valley Baptist Church with the Rev. George Rice officiating. Burial will follow at Growing Valley Cemetery under the direction of Kennon's Mortuary, Inc., in Minden.
Visitation will be held from noon until 8 p.m. today, Aug. 22, at the funeral home and from 10 until 11 a.m. Saturday, at the church.
Mr. Green, a lifelong resident of Minden, Passed away Wednesday, Aug. 20, in Minden. He was born Aug. 9, 1927 in Minden to the late James and Caroline Lee Green.
He is survived by his devoted friend, Maggie Miles of Minden; seven daughters, Adell Baker and husband Marshall of Minden, Nethel B. Jackson of Dallas, Texas , Patsy Jean Green of DeSoto, Texas , Diane Williams of Dallas, Jewel Green of DeSoto, Rita Robinson of DeSoto, and Zita Miles and husband Bruce of San Diego, Calif.; four children he reared as his own, Sheral Breedlove of Minden, Bruce Miles of San Diego, Patrick Miles of Bossier City, and Tella Miles of Shreveport; two brothers, Luther Green and Johnny Green, both of Los Angeles, Calif.; two sisters, Gladys Johnson and Lucy Tott of Crosby, Texas ; eight grandchildren; aunt, Lula B. Lee of Minden; special cousins, Velma Floyd, Thelma Burson and Ruby Musgrow; friend like a brother, Leonard Jenkins; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Harold Hataway
Funeral services for Mr. Harold Truman Hataway, 78, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden with the Rev. Ronnie Whitlock officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. today, Aug. 22, at the funeral home.
Mr. Hataway, a native of Dry Prong and a resident of Webster Parish since 1948, Passed away Thursday, Aug. 21, in Minden. He served 27 years as service manager of the Pontiac dealership in Minden. He was a member of Beech Springs Baptist Church, a member of the American Legion and past president of the Kiwanis Club. He was also a veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Melba Brackman Hataway of Minden; one son, Lynn Hataway and wife Nelda of Springhill; one daughter, Trudy Smith and friend Mike Ruark of Minden; grandchildren, Teresa Hataway of Springhill, Tammy Anderson of Shreveport, Brett Smith of Minden; and one great-grandchild, Gaebriele Anderson of Shreveport.

Lorene Jackson
Funeral services for Mrs. Lorene Monk Jackson will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003, at Mt. Calm Baptist Church in Minden. Burial will follow at Sheppard Street Cemetery in Minden under the direction of Benevolent Funeral Home in Minden.
Visitation will be held from 7 until 8 p.m. today, at the funeral home.
Mrs. Jackson Passed away Wednesday, Aug. 13, at Minden Medical Center. She was born Nov. 15, 1933 to Royal Scott Sr. and Arlesslie J. Harris in Grove. At an early age, she confessed her life to Christ and joined Mt. Calm Baptist Church. She was an active member of the usher board, golden year ministry and the senior citizens choir. She also was an Eastern Star member. She worked at the polls during voting periods. She attended Webster High School and had been a resident of Minden practically her entire life.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother; husband, James Jackson ; and son Bernard Jackson .
She is survived by her daughters, Audrey Jackson and husband Mark of Houston, Texas , Barbara Jackson and husband Moreus of Dallas, Texas , and Sherry Jackson and husband Barry of Okinawa, Japan; son, Gregory W. Jackson and wife Andrea of Minden; sister, Willie M. Johnson of Kemp, Ruthie Burton of Kansas City, Kan., Evelyn W. Peterson of Kansas City, and Annie Peterson of Minden; brother, Royal Scott Jr. of Kansas City; grandchildren, Joi Jackson , Milton Jackson , Andre Jackson , Deldric Jackson , Dominque Jackson , J Koda Cary and Julius Bernard Jackson ; great-grandchildren, Ebone Jackson , Chelsea Jackson , Brandon Jackson , Coty Jackson , Quintiajia Jackson and Dominiccsea Jackson ; devoted niece, Pidgie Givens; three brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Oleta Johnson
Funeral services for Mrs. Oleta Hicks Johnson , 90, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003, at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden with the Rev. J. Roddy Taylor officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Minden.
Visitation will be held from 9 until 10 a.m. prior to services at the funeral home.
Mrs. Johnson , a resident of Conway, Ark., and a former resident of Minden, Passed away Monday, Aug. 18. She was born June 27, 1913 in Batesville, Ark., the daughter of Garland and Carolyn Pauline Sherrill Hicks. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Minden.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Norman Thomas Johnson .
She is survived by her nephew, Scott Hicks of Morrilton, Ark.; and sister-in-law, Winfred Hicks of Minden.
