Funeral services for Mrs. Deatie Morton will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at St. Rest Baptist Church in Minden. Burial will follow at Sheppard Street Cemetery under the direction of Benevolent Funeral Home in Minden.
Family hour will be held from 6 until 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Floyd Washington
Funeral services for Mr. Floyd H. Washington , 58, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at Greater St. Paul Baptist Church with the Rev. C. O. Bryant officiating. Burial, with Military Gravesite Rites, will follow at Shepherd Street Cemetery under the direction of Kennon’s Mortuary, Inc., in Minden.
Visitation will be held Friday, Jan. 23, at the funeral home, with the family hour from 6 until 7 p.m.
Mr. Washington was born Feb. 21, 1945, to John Henry Wright and Ester Bell Washington . He Passed away Jan. 17.
A veteran of the United States Army, SP4 Floyd Washington served in the Vietnam War.
He is survived by his wife, Diane Washington of Shreveport; three daughters, Jackye Washington and Angela Washington , both of Minden, and Verlencia Washington of Atlanta, Ga.; one son, Travis La Monte Washington of Minden; three sisters, Patricia Edwards of Minden, Carrie Washington of Dallas, Texas , and Mary Frances Washington of La Colony, Texas ; one brother, Bobby Rice of Houston, Texas ; nine grandchildren; mother-in-law, Lillie Hill of Los Angeles, Calif.; sisters-in-law, Paula Rice and Barbara Pleasant, both of Houston; brother-in-law, Elbert Hill, Jr. of Los Angeles; two aunts, Janie Washington and Gussie Washington , both of Minden; special cousins, Bernice Handy of Houston, and the Wright Family of Ruston and Farmerville; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Marne Grambling
Graveside services for Mrs. Marne Dee Avera Grambling, 82, were to be held at 10 a.m. today, Jan. 21, 2004, at Greenwood Cemetery in Ruston. Services are under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston.
Mrs. Grambling, a native of Greene County, Miss., and a resident of Ruston, Passed away Saturday, Jan. 17, at Lincoln General Hospital in Ruston. She was born Nov. 10, 1921, the daughter of the late James Murdock Avera and Hattie Dunnam Avera. A graduate of Bogalusa High School, she attended Southeastern Louisiana College, and was a graduate of the Elizabeth Sullivan Memorial School of Nursing.
A resident of Minden for 20 years, she worked as a registered nurse, both at Minden Medical Center and in private duty. For the next 35 years, she was a nurse at Highland and Schumpert Hospitals in Shreveport, ending her career as assistant director of nursing at Schumpert Medical Center.
She cherished her family, her friends and colleagues in Minden and Shreveport, and her beloved neighbors and their children on Lark Avenue.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Gladys M. Rawls, Alma A. Trelles, Benjamin M. Avera and James M. Avera.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Robert Franklin Grambling of Ruston, formerly of Shreveport and Minden; son, Robert Gregory Grambling of Ruston; daughter Constance G. Lane and husband George Bertram Lane of Columbia, S.C.; and granddaughter, Branden Dunham Lane of Columbia, and Coral Gables, Fla.; siblings, Ruby J. Cochran of Folsom, Jincy W. Broom of Bogalusa, and George T. Avera of Metairie.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to an organization of the donor's choice.

John T. Washington Jr.
Funeral services for Deacon John T. Washington Jr. will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, at New Light Baptist Church in Minden. Burial will follow at Sheppard Street Cemetery in Minden under the direction of Benevolent Funeral Home in Minden.
Family hour will be held from 6 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Basil Roy Monk
Funeral services for Mr. Basil Roy "Toby" Monk will be held at 7 p.m. today, Jan. 20, 2004, at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Hammond with Dr. Lonnie Wascom officiating. Graveside services will be held Friday, Jan. 23, at Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Minden.
Mr. Monk, a resident of Hammond, Passed away Sunday, Jan. 18. He was born June 20, 1914 in Evergreen.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margaret Simolke Monk; his parents, Merrill L. and Ida Merritt Monk; two brothers, Coy and Will C. Monk; his grandson, Jeffrey Corkern; and son-in-law, Walter Corkern.
He is survived by his daughter, Linda Monk Corkern; two grandchildren, Michele Corkern and Stephen Corkern; and four great-grandchildren, Jamie, Jordan, Cole and Kaitlyn Corkern.

Alvin Smith
Graveside services for Mr. Alvin E. Smith, 71, were to be held at 10 a.m. today, Jan. 20, 2004, at Gardens of Memory Cemetery with the Rev. Larry Hatcher officiating. Services are under the direction of Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden.
Mr. Smith, a native and resident of Minden, Passed away Sunday, Jan. 18, in Minden.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George A. and Louise F. Smith; sister, Nellie Strickland; and brother, George A. Smith Jr.
He is survived by three sons, Rick E. Smith and wife Ellie of Spring, Texas , Aaron R. Smith of Sibley, and Alfred J. Smith of Minden; sister, Wanda L. Stewart of Minden; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one niece; three nephews; and special friends, Deb Smith and Vickie Butler.

Marne Grambling
Graveside services for Mrs. Marne Dee Avera Grambling, 82, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, at Greenwood Cemetery in Ruston. Services are under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston.
Mrs. Grambling, a resident of Ruston, Passed away Saturday, Jan. 17. She was a registered nurse.
Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Jane James
A memorial service for Mrs. Jane Bogard James will be held at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 19, 2004, at Minden Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Gary Miller officiating and the Rev. Jack Kennedy assisting.
Mrs. James Passed away Thursday, Jan. 15, at Grace Home in Shreveport. She was born Jan. 4, 1919, in Ruston. She attended both Ruston public schools and Louisiana Tech, where she became a member of Kappa Delta Sorority.
She was a member of Minden Presbyterian Church, Minden Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, former member of Minden Study Club, Young Women's Service Club, Minden Hospital Auxiliary, and the Louisiana Press Women's Association.
In years past, she was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader in Shreveport and Minden. She was a former editor of the Ruston Daily Leader, and later, associate editor of the Minden Press-Herald. She has written for the New Orleans Times-Picayune and The Shreveport Times.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, David James Jr. of Minden; son, David James III of Humble, Texas ; daughter, Margaret James Washburn of Knoxville, Tenn.; and granddaughter, Laura Kathryn Howard of Culver City, Calif.
The family requests no flowers. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in memory of Jane Bogard James to either Minden Presbyterian Church, 1001 Broadway in Minden, or Grace Home, 1035 Margaret Place, Shreveport, LA 71171.

Jerry Voorhies
Funeral services for Mr. Jerry Donald Voorhies, 64, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden with the Rev. Bill Ichter officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 until 9 p.m. today, Jan. 19, at the funeral home.
Mr. Voorhies, a native and resident of Minden, Passed away Saturday, Jan. 17, in Minden. He was a lab technician.
He is survived by his wife, Bobbie Kornegay Voorhies of Minden; father, H.E. Voorhies of Minden; daughters, Debbie H. Morgan and husband Paul of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Andrea Higginbotham of Murfreesboro; brother, Jack Douglas Voorhies and wife Jimmie Lou of Minden; nephew, Douglas Voorhies and wife Lynn; niece, Dina and husband Jeff McGee; grandchildren, Danielle and Rick Justice, and Jeffrey Paul Morgan, Michael Brandon Morgan, Dennis Colby Higginbotham, and Harley Marie Higginbotham; two great-nieces and a host of friends.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Baird, Kevin Higginbotham, Dennis Higginbotham, Paul Morgan, Colby Higginbotham and Rick Justice.

Eugene Carey Sr.
Funeral services for Mr. Eugene Carey Sr., 67, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at Stewart Rose Manor Funeral Home in Richmond, Calif. Burial followed on Jan. 7, at Joaquin National Cemetery in Gustine, Calif.
Mr. Carey Passed away at Dec. 27, 2003, at Doctor's Medical Hospital in San Pablo, Calif., after a long battle with diabetes. Born in Evansville, Ind., he was the twelfth child of 13. He, along with his siblings, was orphaned at a very early age. Two years prior to completion of high school, his sister, Helen, worked to remove him from the orphanage to join her in Minden, where she was teaching at Webster High School. He graduated in 1954.
The foundation to higher academic and athletic achievements began at Webster High School, where he was a top athlete and scholar. He was accepted at Texas Southern University, located in Houston, Texas , in the fall term of 1954. He participated on the Division I football and basketball squads.
After two years, Mr. Carey decided to enlist in the U.S. Army; he served for 10 years, serving one year in Vietnam. After returning to the United States in 1967, he was assigned to Ft. Knox, Ky., where he was discharged one year later.
In 1968, Mr. Carey, along with his wife Nancy, and their children, Karen and Eugene Jr., relocated to the Bay Area to be near his sisters, Helen and Ruth. He chose to settle in Oakland, eventually accepting employment with the Job Corps in Pleasanton, Calif.
The promising times of the early 1970s led him to complete his education at California State University, Hayward. He received his bachelor of arts degree in physical education and English. With his teaching credential, he taught physical education, English, coached football, basketball and track and field at various schools in the Oakland and Richmond Unified School Districts.
His hearty and gregarious personality and his infectious love of life led him to influence the lives and direction of many that came to know him. To know him was to know many emotions. He made us laugh; he made us cry, and he made us feel special. He was a loving father, supportive husband, a brother upon whom anyone could depend, an insightful uncle, an inspirational mentor and coach, and compassionate and faithful friend.
He is survived by his wife, Weteona Carey; children from his first marriage, Karen Bob of Oakland, and Eugene Carey Jr. of Athens, N.Y.; stepdaughter, Bonita Walker of Berkeley, Calif.; sisters, Camille Bagwell of Boston, Mass., Helen Alder of Oakland, Lela Dycus of Indianapolis, Ind., Ruth Rankin of Richmond, and Janice Jackson of Evansville; grandchildren, Jamila Charles Jr., Jabari, Shomari, Rashida, Tarik, and Jibril Bob, and Erin, Eugene III, Sydney, Giana, and Adora Carey; step-grandchildren, Dominic Motley, Akilah Bernard and a host of great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, family and friends.

June Turner
Funeral services for Mrs. June Carter Turner will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at Mt. Zion CME Church in Minden. Burial will follow at Sheppard Street Cemetery under the direction of Benevolent Funeral Home in Minden.
Visitation will be held from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the church.

Gerald Watson
Graveside services for the Rev. Gerald D. Watson, 70, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Wolfe City, Texas , with the Rev. Bobby Bryan officiating. Services are under the direction of Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Bossier City.
Rev. Watson Passed away Thursday, Jan. 15, in Shreveport. He was of the Baptist faith and was a member of Living Word Worship Center in Minden. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.
He is survived by his wife Joyce Watson; sons, Geary Watson and wife Margaret, Stephen R. Watson and wife Julie; daughter, Melanie K. Sweatman and husband Robert; and grandchildren, Rebecca Johnson , Jason D. Watson, Joyce and Joshua Sweatman, and Adam Creed.

June Turner
Funeral services for Mrs. June Carter Turner, 79 will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 17, at Mt. Zion C.M.E. Church in Minden with the Rev. Charlie Coleman officiating. Services are under the direction of Benevolent Funeral Home in Minden.
Mrs. Turner, a native of Morrilton, Ark. and a resident of Minden for 58 years Passed away Monday at the Lutheran Home in Rockville, Maryland. She was a retired teacher and counselor from the Webster Parish School Board.
She was preceded in death by her parents Charlene and William Carter and husband Willie Turner.
She is survived by her daughters Francene Turner Walker of Gaithersburg, Maryland and Arlinda Charlese Turner of Houston. One grandson Jamahl Walker Sr. and great grandson Jamahl Walker Jr. of Baltimore. A great niece Mary Louise Williams and daughter Sandra Anthony of Little Rock. One nephew Osiah Johnson , from Bossier City and many other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers will be Cleveland Harris, Len T. Harris, Welton Harris, Robert Hill, Willie Hollingsworth, Danny Mc Woods on, Samuel Mims, and Levi Williams.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions made to the United Negro College Fund in memory of Mrs. June C. Turner in care of Tamala Scott, Willow Oaks Corporate Drive, P.O. Box 10444, Fairfax Virginia 22031.

Luetelus Bailey
Funeral services for Mr. Luetelus Bailey, 89, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at Mt. Calm Missionary Baptist Church in Minden with the Rev. T.A. Knapp officiating. Burial will follow at Sheppard Street Cemetery under the direction of Patterson Funeral Home in Minden.
Visitation will be held from 6 until 7 p.m. today, Jan. 13, at the funeral home.
Mr. Bailey Passed away Wednesday, Jan. 7. He was born on Oct. 18, 1914, to the late Henry and Annie Cobb Bailey. He and his twin sister, Mary Lou, were the youngest of six children.
He attended Webster Parish public schools and later entered the United States Army during World War II. After receiving an honorable discharge, he returned to Louisiana and moved to Cullen to work at International Paper Company. He worked there for 41 years until he retired in 1979.
While in Cullen, he married Leola Smith in 1945. They had one child, Maurice. He was later married to Vera E. McLaughlin of Minden in 1959. They also had one child, Sharon. He moved his family to Minden in 1963.
He joined Mt. Calm Missionary Baptist Church at a young age and also fellowshipped with First Baptist Church in Cullen. In 1984, while visiting his daughter in Marietta, Ga., he attended a revival, and after hearing messages on the differences between religion and having a relationship with Jesus Christ, he went to the altar and asked Jesus to be his Lord and Savior. He was assured of his salvation. Some of the ministries he was involved in at Mt. Calm were the Golden Years Ministry, the Brotherhood, the Male Chorus, the Inspirational Chorus and Sunday School Class #13.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Vera in 1981; brothers, George, Tom, Herbert, Jr.; and sister, Eleanor.
He is survived by his twin sister, Mary Lou Session of Detroit, Mich.; his two daughters, Ruth Jane Bailey of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Sharon Bailey Jay of Stone Mountain, Ga.; one son, Maurice Bailey of Seattle, Wash.; one son-in-law, Mark Jay of Stone Mountain; four grandchildren, Jonathan, Jessica, Jillian, and Joseph Jay, all of Stone Mountain; brother-in-law, the Rev. Charlie McLaughlin and wife Dorothy of Gibsland; sister-in-law, Mary Helen Smith of Houston, Texas ; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; his friends at the Webster Parish Council on Aging; his special family, the Rev. T.A. Knapp and Mt. Calm Missionary Baptist Church, whom he loved.

E.J. Kennington
Graveside services for Mr. E.J. Kennington, 66, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Cotton Valley Cemetery with the Rev. Kenny Joyner officiating. Services were under the direction of Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden.
Mr. Kennington, a native of Ringgold and a resident of Cotton Valley, Passed away Wednesday, Jan. 7, in Minden. He was a car salesman.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Ava Mae Kennington; sister, Martha Smith; and brother Charlie Kennington.
He is survived by his son, Steve Kennington of Florida; and daughter, Noel of Florida.
Pallbearers were Billy Windham, Jerry Slack, Lonnie Simpson, Pat Modisette, Felton Buford and Danny Ray Green. Honorary pallbearers were Schuyler A. Murph and Tyler Windham.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Cotton Valley Cemetery Association.
