Byron Lear
Funeral services for Mr. Byron Lavelle Lear, 72, were held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, May 21, 2004, at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Shreveport, where the Rev. Joseph Brown, pastor of Liberty Baptist Church, officiated, and the Rev. Julius Carter assisted. Burial followed at Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Minden.
Mr. Lear, a native of Shreveport, Passed away suddenly, Monday, May 17, in Shreveport. He was born Dec. 26, 1931 to Willie and Sara Janie Lear. He was a member and deacon of Liberty Baptist Church, and after retiring from KCS Railroad, he owned his own trucking company.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister; brother; and his beloved son, David Lear.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Doris Jean Anderson Lear; son, Steven Lear; daughter, Denise Strange; grandchildren, Rachel Philpott and husband Paul, Ryan Strange, Erin Strange, Brandon Venable, Stephanie Lear; sisters, Joyce Tyner, Merle Barziza, Gloria Gannaway; brothers, James Lear, Burl Lear, Rex Lear; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to Liberty Baptist Church or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Pearl Stephens
Funeral services for Mrs. Pearl Stephens, 86, were held at noon, Saturday, May 22, 2004, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Dubberly where the Rev. Huey P. Roberson officiated. Burial followed at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery under the direction of Miller-Pioneer Funeral Home in Minden.
Mrs. Stephens, a resident of Dubberly, Passed away Monday, May 17, at Minden Medical Center.
She is survived by one daughter, Ida Wiggins of Dubberly; and a host of grandchildren.

Willie Tomlinson
Funeral services for Mr. Willie C. “Bill” Tomlinson, 78, were to be held at 10 a.m. today, May 24, 2004, at North Acres Baptist Church in Minden with the Rev. Roy Strother officiating and the Rev. Bill Ichter assisting. Burial will follow at Lane Memorial Cemetery in Sibley under the direction of Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden.
Mr. Tomlinson, a native of Hampton, Ark., and a resident of Minden since 1946, Passed away Friday, May 21, in Minden. He was a retired heavy equipment operator for Madden Construction Co. for 30 years. He was a World War II Navy veteran and a member of North Acres Baptist Church, where he was also a deacon for 48 years. May 23 would have been Mr. and Mrs. Tomlinson’s 51st wedding anniversary.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Houston and Gerald Tomlinson; and sister, Vera Nutt.
He is survived by his wife, Irene Stevens Tomlinson of Minden; one son, Jimmy Davis and his wife, LaDonna of Minden; one daughter, Judith Trant and husband Eddie of Birmingham, Ala.; one brother, Joe T. Tomlinson of Minden; three grandchildren, Steve Davis of Minden, Troy Trant of Montgomery, Ala., Wendy Green of Birmingham; three step-grandchildren, Kristi Woods of Fouke, Ark., Clint and Shane Woods of Minden; and four great-grandchildren, Darby Green, Courtney and Hutton Woods , and Josh Hortman.
Pallbearers were to be Jimmy Heflin, Bud Sandidge, Mike Powell, Shelby Edwards, C.L. Albritton and Joe Biles. Honorary pallbearers were to be all the deacons of North Acres Baptist Church.

Mr. Larry Morris Sr.
Funeral services for Mr. Larry Morris will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 22, 2004 at Mt. Calm Baptist Church with the Rev. T.A. Knapp officiating. Burial will follow at Moreland Cemetery in Athens under the direction of Benevolent Funeral Home in Minden.
Mr. Morris Passed away Tuesday, May 18, 200, at Minden Medical Center.
He is preceded in death by his father, Jim Riley Morris, and grandparents, Booker and Lillie Mae Sims.
He is survived by three children, Deldrick Donnell Morris, Larry Darnell Morris Jr. and LaTarya Nicole Morris, all of Minden; mother, Thelma Pickens Morris of Minden; one sister, Helen Ruth Morris; special family friend, Valery Jones of Kansas City, Mo.; six brothers, Darrell Darnell Morris, James Riley Morris, Billy Wright Sr. (Ruthie); Willie Mollett, Charlie James Edwards of Minden and Jimmy Wayne Morris of Kansas City, Mo.; one grandson, JaVonte’ Javez Morris of Minden; special niece, Jameda Morris of Kansas City, Mo.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Castoria Smith
Funeral services for Mrs. Castoria Smith will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, May 22, 2004, at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church under the direction of Frankie L. Washington of Paradise Funeral Home of Dallas, Texas .
Mrs. Smith was born April 2, 1955, in Shreveport and Passed away May 14, 2002.
She became a member of Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church. She married Johnnie B. Smith in 1973 in Sibley, and they later relocated to Dallas where she was an entrepreneur with several businesses, including J.B. Cleaning Services and Pacesetters Development Center. She was also a member of the Potter’s House where she served on the sales and marketing team, prison ministry and evangelism team.
She is survived her husband, Johnny B. Smith Sr.; son, Johnnie B. Smith Jr.; grandchildren, Gabriel and Abligail Covington; mother, Mary Helen Smith of Sibley; five brothers; and two sisters.

Byron Lavelle Lear
Funeral services for Byron Lavelle Lear, 72, will be held at 11:30 a.m., Friday, May 21, 2004, at Rose Neath’s outside chapel with the Rev. Julius Carter officiating and the Rev. Joseph Brown assisting. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 5 until 8 p.m. today.
Mr. Lear was born Dec. 26, 1931, in Shreveport, to Willie and Sara Janie Lear. He Passed away suddenly Monday, May 17 in Shreveport. Mr. Lear was a member and deacon of Liberty Baptist Church. After retiring from KCS Railroad, he owned his own trucking company.
He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, brother and his son, David Lear.

Pearl Stephens
Funeral services for Pearl Stephens, 86, will be held at noon Saturday at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Dubberly with the Rev. Huey P. Roberson officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Dubberly under the direction of Miller Pioneer Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held from 1 until 5 p.m. Friday at Miller Pioneer Funeral Home Chapel.
Mrs. Stephens Passed away May 17 at Minden Medical Center.
She is survived by one daughter, Ida Wiggins of Dubberly, and a host of grandchildren.

Roderick H. Parker
Funeral services for Mr. Roderick H. Parker, 68, were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at Cullen Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Dee Anders and the Rev. Kenneth Stanfield officiating. Burial, with Masonic graveside rites, followed at Whitehall Cemetery under the direction of Bailey Mortuary.
Mr. Parker, a resident of Sarepta, Passed away Saturday, May 15 in Shreveport following a lengthy illness. He was a member of Cullen Assembly of God Church, a retired employee of International Paper Company with 25 years of service and was a member of the Springhill Masonic Lodge #348 F&AM.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John William and Trebie Thomas Parker; sister, Travis Childs and husband, Thurman; brothers, W.H. Parker and Roy Parker; and a half-brother, Luther Parker.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Carolyn Slack Parker; son, Ronnie Parker of Sarepta; daughter, Anita P. Morden and husband Tommy of Magnolia, Ark.; brother, J.W. Parker Jr. and wife Betty of Springhill; sister, O’rene Butcher of Cottage Grove, Ore.; grandchildren, Wesley Parker, Hanna Pate Parker and husband Wesley, Justin Morden and Jonathan Morden; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Benjie Thomas, Steven Williams, Sammy Stanford, Danny Parker, Jeff Slack and Bill Thomas. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Masonic Lodge and Mr. Parker’s nephews.

Mrs. Marie Temple Shurtleff
Funeral services for Mrs. Marie Temple Shurtleff, 81, were to be held at 3 p.m. today, Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at Springhill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Terral Lowe officiating. Burial was to follow in the Old Minden Cemetery under the direction of Bailey Mortuary.
Mrs. Shurtleff was born Oct. 8, 1922 in Homer to Malcom and Mary Irma Devanie Temple and Passed away May 17, 2004 following a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s. She was co-owner of Shurtleff’s Sewing Center for 39 years, was an active member of Springhill Methodist Church and was a member of the Springhill Civic Club, Order of the Eastern Star and American Legion Auxiliary.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard Shurtleff; brothers, George Temple, Allen Temple and Chris Temple; and daughter-in-law, Carolyn Shurtleff.
She is survived a son, David Michael Shurtleff of Bossier City; daughter, Terri Shurtleff and husband George of Springhill; grandchildren, Jennifer Shurtleff Crawford of Abbeville, Nicholas A. Shurtleff of Alexander, Ark., Kimberly Shurtleff of Bossier City; great grandchildren, Dusty Crawford, Destiny Crawford, both of Abbeville; step-grandsons, Jason Merritt and wife Kathryn of Shreveport, Joseph Merritt and wife, Holly of Baton Rouge, Josh Merritt of Shreveport, Jacob Merritt of Bossier City; step-great grandchildren, Marshall Merritt, Trenton Merritt, William Merritt, all of Shreveport; brother, Earl Temple of Longview, Texas ; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were to be Jason Merritt, Josh Merritt, Jacob Merritt, Carlton Frye, Clayton Frye and Richard Allen Temple.

Marjorie E. Kelsey
Funeral services for Mrs. Marjorie E. Kelsey, 82, were to be held at 11 a.m., today at the Rose-Neath of Arcadia Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Larry Joyner officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery.
A native of Crestone, Colo., and resident of Mt. Lebanon, Mrs. Kelsey Passed away Friday, May 14 at Riverview Care Center in Bossier City. She was a homemaker.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Glen R. Kelsey.
She is survived by her sons, Leland Kelsey and wife, Shirley, of Arvada, Colo., and Charles Kelsey and wife Aleta of Bossier City; daughter, Patricia Gentry of Minden; brother, Lt. Col. Charles W. Eaton of Mt. Lebanon; seven grandchildren, Lana, Stephanie, Paula, Rhonda, Raymond, Lesley and Heather; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorials made be made to Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church of Mt. Lebanon Cemetery Association.

Marjorie E. Kelsey
Funeral services for Mrs. Marjorie E. Kelsey, 82, will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at the Rose-Neath of Arcadia Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Larry Joyner officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. today.
A native of Crestone, Colo., and resident of Mt. Lebanon, Mrs. Kelsey Passed away Friday, May 14 at Riverview Care Center in Bossier City. She was a homemaker.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Glen R. Kelsey.
She is survived by her sons, Leland Kelsey and wife, Shirley, of Arvada, Colo., and Charles Kelsey and wife Aleta of Bossier City; daughter, Patricia Gentry of Minden; brother, Lt. Col. Charles W. Eaton of Mt. Lebanon; seven grandchildren, Lana, Stephanie, Paula, Rhonda, Raymond, Lesley and Heather; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Roderick H. Parker
Funeral services for Mr. Roderick H Parker, age 68, of Sarepta will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Cullen Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Dee Anders and Rev. Kenneth Stanfield officiating. He was a native and lifelong resident of this area and Passed away on Saturday in Shreveport after al long illness. Serving as pallbearers will be Benjie Thomas, Steven Williams, Sammy Stanford, Danny Parker, Jeff Slack and Bill Thomas. Members of the Masonic Lodge and nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Minnie Markray
Funeral services for Mrs. Minnie Markray will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 15, 2004, at Greater St. Paul Baptist Church in Minden. Burial will follow at Newsom Cemetery in Minden under the direction of Benevolent Funeral Home in Minden.
Family hour will be held from 7 until 8 p.m. today, May 14, at the funeral home.

Kinsey Martin
Funeral services for Mr. Kinsey Dale Martin Sr., 71, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 15, 2004, at Pine Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Eddie Rushing officiating and the Rev. Don Hugley assisting. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery under the direction of Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden.
Visitation will be held at 5:30 p.m. today, May 14, at the funeral home.
Mr. Martin, a native of Dickinson, Texas , and a resident of Minden, Passed away Tuesday, May 11, in Shreveport. He was employed with the Wildlife and Fisheries Department for 32 years.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia Langheld Martin; parents, Richard and Lena Martin; two brothers, Harley Martin and Hayward D. Martin Jr.; and two sisters, Arlene Martin Grigsby and Lorene Martin Dickinson.
He is survived by his wife Nellie Lunsford Hinton Martin of Minden; four daughters, Pam Gruner and Sondra Rowton of Minden, Renee Donaldson of New Iberia, Diana Byrd of Blanchard; one son, Kinsey Dale Martin Jr. of Paris, Texas ; one stepson, Durwood Lamar Hinton of Houston, Texas ; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Richard Grigsby, Lemuel Grigsby, Todd McCormick, Randy Grigsby, Jim Martin and Rodney Grigsby. Honorary pallbearers will be Bud Sandidge, Cliff Yount and Charles Williams.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or to Pine Grove United Methodist Church.

Vera Oliphint
Funeral services for Mrs. Vera Jones Oliphint, 90, will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, May 15, 2004, at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. today, May 14, at the funeral home.
Mrs. Oliphint, a native of Heflin and a resident of Shreveport for more than 25 years, Passed away Wednesday, May 12, in Shreveport. She was a schoolteacher in Louisiana and Mississippi. She attended Louisiana Tech and received her masters degree at University of Southern Mississippi at Hattiesburg.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Zach Oliphint; brothers, Paul Jones and Mallory Jones; sisters, Irene Smith and Edna Reeve; and nephew, James H. Reeve.
She is survived by her daughter, Rosemary Oliphint Duclo of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; sisters, Velma Boggs and Alice Lee of Heflin; nephews, David Jones and wife Charlotte, Lewis Jones and wife Ginger, and Stephen C. Lee and wife Christine; niece, Linda K. Banister and husband Mallory and their children; special friends, Richard Huber and wife Becky; and her personal caretaker, Sharon Pierson.
