A decorated Korean fighter pilot, enthusiastic chorister, long-time developmental engineer with Ford Motor Company and loving husband and father. Dean DeLong encompassed much in a life which ended at 81 in Shreveport, following complications from surgery.
Born in 1923, in Fort Morgan, Colo., the younger child of Oliver and Amy Florence DeLong, Dean graduated as an engineer from the University of Colorado, and remained a member of the alumni association throughout his life. World War II introduced him to what would become a great, lifelong passion... flying. He won his wings as a Marine pilot just too late to serve in that war, but stayed in the reserves and was called up to serve with distinction in Korea, flying the aircraft carrier-based Corsairs that war made famous.
In 1952, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, his citation noting great personal courage leading a successful attack on enemy positions in the face of heavy fire.
He went on after the war to serve a total of 16 years in the reserves, including a stint as a flying instructor and remained a keen amateur flyer well past middle age.
At one point he crash-landed an F4U Corsair in Lake Erie.
He flew with a Marine flyers group calling themselves the “Knights of Olde” and kept contact with his Korean flying comrades throughout his life. During his 42-year career with Ford Motor Company, he not only worked briefly during the mid 60s on Ford’s budding Indy Race program (including 1966, when Scotsman Jimmy Clark won the race in his Ford Lotus), but spent time in Argentina and Australia and, of course, his regular assignment at the old “Triple E” engineering headquarters in Dearborn.
When not literally in flight, Dean spent much time on the wings of song. He sang with the Ford Chorus, the Littlefield Presbyterian Church in Dearborn choir and was a member of the Society for the Preservation of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBQSA). Dean resided in the Royal Oak, Detroit, area until he and his wife Gerry relocated late last year to Minden.
