L.C. "Shine" Smith
Funeral services for Mr. L. C. Smith, 72, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, at St. Mark Baptist Church with the Rev. Melvin Smith officiating. interment will follow at the Doyline Community Cemetery under the direction of Kennon's Mortuary.
Visitation will be held Friday, Sept. 17, at the funeral home.
Mr. Smith was born Oct. 8, 1931 in Doyline, to the late Henretta Battle Smith and the late Lewis Watson. The late Eddie Smith reared him as his own. He Passed away Friday, Sept. 10, 2004 in Minden.
In November 1954, he married Pauline Webbb Smith, who preceded him in death. To this union, three children were born. One son, L.C. Smith, Jr. preceded him in death. Two sisters, Mary Smith and Bertha Smith also preceded him in death.
He leaves as a legacy a devoted daughter, Quandra Smith Cole of Doyline; a devoted son, Paul David Smith and wife Debra of Doyline; three adopted children, Ethel Parker and husband Billy of Minden, Paula Parker, of Atlanta, Ga., and Bruce Sterling, Jr. of Houston, Texas ; five sisters, Ella Mae Chambers of Princeton, Rosie Taylor and Rosie Wheeler, both of Doyline, Betty Feaster and Lucille Hampton, both of Bossier City; three brothers, Mack Henry Smith and wife Helen and Eddie Smith, Jr., both of Palo Alto, Calif., and Otis Smith and wife Bertha of Doyline; seven grandchildren; one brother-in-law, David Webb; four aunts, Ella Mae Jackson and Theresa Lewis, both of Oakland, Calif., Mary Battle Byretha Smith, both of Doyline; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Marion Almond
Funeral services for Mr. Marion Hugh Almond were to be held at 10 a.m. today, Sept. 16, 2004, at First Baptist Church in Silsbee, Texas . A military graveside service will be conducted by the Southeast Texas Service Group at R.S. Farmer Memorial Cemetery. Services are under the direction of R.S. Farmer Funeral Home in Silsbee.
Mr. Almond Passed away Monday, Sept. 13. He was born June 14, 1923 in Minden and married Bobbie Weaver in 1947. Silsbee has been his home since 1954.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Silsbee, and was a decorated veteran of World War II. After being honorably discharged from the U.S. Army, he moved to Silsbee as the manager of the local Morgan and Lindsey department store, which later became G.C. Murphy. He was also working for Farmers Funeral Home.
He will be remembered for being a loving person who always had time to pass along a smile, a hello and a warm handshake.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bobbie; parents, Lafayette and Willie Mae Almond, sister, Camille Zachery and brothers, Edward, Laceyster, Joe, J.P., and Drew.
He is survived by his three children, Danny Almond of Plano, Texas , Doug Almond of Beaumont, Texas , and Debbie McInnis of Silsbee; his sister, Sarah Minter of Minden; brother, Pat Almond of Baton Rouge; and five grandchildren, Dusty and Megan McInnis, Amanda Trent and Ashton Almond.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Children's Miracle Network, 3619 Professional Dr., Port Arthur, TX 77642, and phone (409) 983-5065.

George Lorraine
Funeral services for Mr. George B. Lorraine, 97, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden with the Rev. Wayne DuBose, the Rev. Bill Crider and the Rev. Bill Ichter officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. today, Sept. 16, at the funeral home.
Mr. Lorraine, a native of Denison, Texas , and a resident of Minden, Passed away Wednesday, Sept. 15, in Minden. He graduated from Minden High School in 1925, and attended Texas A&M. He and his wife, Inez Harris were married on Jan. 12, 1936. He was a member of First Baptist Church for 66 years, and on the money-counting committee for 25 years. Having been a volunteer fireman from 1944 to 1972, he retired as district chief of the Germantown Fire Station.
He was employed by Webb Hardware for 52 years. Mr. Lorraine was a 50-year member of the American Legion, 50-year member of the K.D. Lodge and a 50-year member of Woodman of the World and a charter member of the AARP.
He is survived by his wife, Inez Lorraine of Minden; daughter, Jennie Frickie of Jonesboror; sister, Jeanette Roark of Marshall, Texas ; one grandchild, Stephanie Schmidt of Monroe; and several nieces and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Friendship Class and the Jack Woodard Sunday School Class.
Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Faye Newsom
Funeral services for Mrs. Faye Duke Newsom, 73, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at First Baptist Church in Minden with the Rev. Bill Ichter officiating, and the Rev. Beth Sentell assisting. Burial will follow at Pilgrim's Rest Cemetery in Shongaloo under the direction of Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden.
Visitation will be held all day today, Sept. 16.
Mrs. Newsom, a native of Shongaloo, Passed away Tuesday, Sept. 14. She was born Oct. 20, 1930 to the late Joe Shelton and Florence McKenzie Duke. She was a lifelong resident of Webster Parish and was an educator in the Webster Parish school system for 30 years. She taught at Stewart Elementary, Phillips Middle School and Lowe Junior High/Middle Schools from 1968 until 1985, and taught homebound children in the parish from 1985 until 1987. She was principal at Cotton Valley High School from 1987 until 1990, and Minden High School from 1990 until her retirement in 1997. Since her retirement, she has been a substitute teacher and an outside assessor for Louisiana Teacher Assistance and Assessment.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Tillman Newsom; son, Joel Hunter Newsom; brothers, Clyde Duke, I.D. "Derwood" Duke, Norvin Bruce Duke, Jim Tom Duke, Mac Duke, Mynor Hollis "Bunk" Duke and Maurice "Molly" Duke.
She is survived by her sisters, Dorothy Louise Duke Mouser and Marie "Ree" Duke Jackson ; daughter, Brenda Gayle Newsom Maxey and husband David; son, Roger Newsom; daughter-in-law, Carol Weeks Newsom; grandsons, Gregory Tillman Austin, Jeremiah Hunter Newsom, Levi Evan Newsom, Drew Douglas Newsom and David Lynn Maxey Jr.; granddaughter, Amanda Lynn Maxey Ferguson; great-grandsons, Parker Tillman Austin, Caleb Ferguson and Dakota Newsom; great-granddaughter, Abigail Ferguson; special friend, Priscilla Stahl; and several nephews, nieces, cousins and a host of friends.
Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons and nephew, Jimmie Miller. Honorary pallbearers will be Doyle Jackson , Jerry Lott, Richard Noles, and Wayne W. "Butch" Williams III.

Marion Almond
Funeral services for Mr. Marion Hugh Almond will be held Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, at First Baptist Church in Silsbee, Texas . Miles Hicks
Funeral services for Mr. Miles Dennis Hicks, 56, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, at Unity Baptist Church in Cotton Valley with the Rev. Cecil Marr officiating and the Rev. Kenny Joyner assisting. Burial will follow at Cotton Valley Cemetery with full Masonic and military graveside rites. Services are under the direction of Bailey Mortuary, Inc. in Springhill.
Visitation will be held at 2 p.m. today, Sept. 15, at the funeral home.
Mr. Hicks, a native of Holcomb, Mo., Passed away Monday, Sept. 13, in Shreveport, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Oct. 10, 1947 to A.B. and Coy Hicks. He was a resident of Cotton Valley, member of Unity Baptist Church, member of the Cotton Valley Masonic Lodge #335 F&AM, and was a self-employed contractor for many years. He was also a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran serving his country with the 4th Calvary 1st Infantry as a crew chief on a UH1 Huey Helicopter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bertie Hicks, Leroy Hicks; and sister, Brenda Grelle.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Lynn Davis Hicks of Cotton Valley; two daughters, Denise "Dennie" Dodson and husband Marty of Taylor , Ark., Shea Elkins and husband Paul of Taylor ; five grandchildren, Trevor Dodson, Kayla-Brittany Dodson, Tennon Dodson, Ciara Elkins, and Keegan Miles Elkins; brothers, Harold Hicks of West Memphis, Ark., Delane Hicks of Sarepta; sisters, Paulette Lee of Bossier City, Judy Maxwell of Cotton Valley and a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Maj. Gen. Tom Craig (Ret.), Tony Clemons, Gary Morgan, Trent Maxwell, Colby Grelle and Sidney Cox.

Thomas Wakefield
Funeral services for Mr. Thomas Gayer Wakefield will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, at Farmer Funeral Home in Silsbee, Texas . Burial will follow at 4 p.m. at Hampton Memorial Cemetery in Elizabeth.
Visitation will be held from 5 until 8 p.m. today, Sept. 15, at the funeral home.
Mr. Wakefield Passed away Monday, Sept. 13. He was born at Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas , on Dec. 9, 1955. He has been a resident of Silsbee for approximately 20 years. He was a teacher at Pathways Learning Center of Beaumont Independent School District until his retirement in 2003.
He was preceded in death by his father, John F. Wakefield.
He is survived by his wife, Ann E. Wakefield of Silsbee; sons, T.J. Wakefield of Fort Bragg, N.C., C. Kelsey and Caleb C. Wakefield of Silsbee; daughters, Sara A. McFarland and Laura E. McFarland of Silsbee; mother, Grace G. Wakefield of Pineville; brother, John E. Wakefield of Pineville; sisters, Charlotte W. Wenzel of Mobile, Ala., Anne W. Reid of Alexandria, and Patricia W. Burns of Rogers, Ark., and families.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Mark Osborn Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 550, Elizabeth, LA 70638.

LeRoy J. Copeland
Funeral services for Mr. LeRoy J. Copeland, 54, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at Deal-Robbins and Van Gilder Huntington Funeral Home, located at 338 E. Washington St., with the Rev. Kurt Church officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul's Cemetery in Bippus.
Visitation will be held from 2 until 4 p.m. and from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.
Mr. Copeland Passed away at 1:14 p.m. Monday, Sept. 6, at Parkview Huntington Hospital. He was a courier for Now Courier of Fort Wayne and also worked for 21 years at Majestics in Huntington. He was a 1969 graduate of Huntington High School. He was born April 2, 1950 in Bismark, Ark., to Roy D. and Mary Pasley Copeland. He married Bonnie McCullough in Andrews on Sept. 27, 1969.
He is survived by his wife of Huntington; two daughters, Rachel R. and Deedra L. Copeland, both of Fort Wayne; one son, David W. Copeland of Columbia City; two brothers, Roy A. Copeland of Minden, and Joe D. Copeland of Valparaiso; two sisters, Margie Gray and husband Tom of Churubusco and Julie Bollheimer of Roanoke; mother, Mary Provoznik and husband Ward of Minden; and three grandchildren.

Ejuan McDonald
Graveside services for baby Ejuan Reshard McDonald will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, at Sheppard Street Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Miller-Pioneer Funeral Home in Minden.
Ejuan Passed away at Minden Medical Center.
He is survived by his mother, Norcha Jackson ; father, Ejuan McDonald; maternal grandmother, Myra Jackson ; grandfather, Anthony Rye III; paternal grandparents, LaJune McDonald, Ellie McDonald; aunts, Saundra Johnson , and Sherry Jackson ; uncles, Patrick Rye, Dewayne Rye, Jason Prejean and C.J. McDonald; sister, Samaria McDonald; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Loris Lewis
Funeral services for Mrs. Loris Easley Lewis will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at Kennon Funeral Home, located at 417 Martin Luther King Drive in Minden, with the Rev. Kimble officiating. Burial will follow at Ebenezer Cemetery in Castor.
Visitation will be held today, Sept. 10, with family hour from 6 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mrs. Lewis Passed away Monday, Sept. 6, at Minden Medical Center.
She is survived by two sons, Felton Lewis of Minden, Bud Tobin of Columbus, Ohio; one daughter, Debra Lewis of Minden; three brothers, Joe Easley of Minden, Roosevelt Easley and Alton Easley, both of Houston, Texas ; six grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Artee Roberson
Funeral services for Mrs. Artee Roberson will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church in Dubberly. Burial will follow at Moore Cemetery under the direction of Kennon Mortuary, Inc., in Minden.
She was a resident of Dubberly.
She is survived by seven children, Ida Coleman, Charlie B. Roberson, Willie Lee Roberson, Bobby Lee Roberson, Mary Ruth Johnson , Linda Roberson, and Brenda Brown, all of Houston, Texas ; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a host of relatives and friends.

Kenneth Ayers
Funeral services for Mr. Kenneth Richard "Ricky" Ayers, 47, were to be held at 11 a.m. today, Sept. 9, 2004, at Evergreen Union Church with the Rev. Floyd Stratton and the Rev. Weston Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery under the direction of Bailey Mortuary in Springhill.
Mr. Ayers, a native of Springhill, Passed away Sunday, Sept. 5, at his home in Evergreen. He was born Sept. 17, 1956 to Birzine and Vernell Thomas Ayers and was a member of the Evergreen Community. He was also a member of Evergreen Methodist Church and worked for Hope Youth Ranch.
He was preceded in death by his father, Birzine "Bill" Ayers; and sister, Nina Joan Ayers.
He is survived by his mother, Vernell Thomas Ayers of Springhill; sons, Chris Ayers and wife Sonja of Sarepta, Caleb Ayers of Minden; grandsons, Brock and Seth Ayers of Sarepta; brothers, Thomas "Tommy" Ayers and wife Beverly of Springhill, William J. Ayers and wife Zeny of Modesto, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were to be Morris Guin, Larry Lee, Glen Johnston, David Lowe, Carl Bricker and Eddie Paul. Honorary pallbearer was to be Roy Martinez.

Jeanne Garrett
Funeral services for Mrs. Jeanne Hicks Garrett, 77, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, at First United Methodist Church, located at 930 North Boulevard, Baton Rouge with the Rev. Chris Andrew officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, with the Rev. J. Roddy Taylor officiating. Services are under the direction of Rabenhorst Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. today, Sept. 7, at the funeral home, located at 825 Government Street in Baton Rouge, and also from 8 a.m. until noon the day of services.
Mrs. Garrett, a resident of Baton Rouge and former resident of Minden, Passed away Saturday, Sept. 4, at St. James Place. She was a native of Smackover, Ark. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Baton Rouge, but was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Minden prior to her move to Baton Rouge. She was very involved in United Methodist Women as well as serving on the finance committee for the Louisiana Conference of United Methodists for several years.
Prior to her move to Minden, she was active as an Army officer's wife. She moved with her husband and children numerous times in 26 years, always making a home wherever she went. Upon her children leaving home, she returned to Louisiana Tech University and obtained her bachelor's degree. She will be best remembered by her gracious smile and determined spirit.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Felix Roby Garrett.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and John Burns of Baton Rouge; two sons and daughter-in-law, Randy and Linnella Garrett and Jim Garrett, all of Baton Rouge; a sister, Elizabeth Bickel of Dallas, Texas ; brother and sister-in-law, James and Laura Lee Hicks of McAllen, Texas ; sister-in-law, Eloise Garrett of Baton Rouge; five grandchildren, Mary Katherine and Allison Burns, Emily and John Taylor Garrett and Connor Garrett; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Baton Rouge or First United Methodist Church in Baton Rouge.
