BORDEN, Sammy Vincent
RAYVILLE - Funeral services for Sammy Vincent Borden, 31, of Rayville, La., were held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 27, 2000, at the Brown-Holley Funeral Home Chapel in Rayville with the Rev. Harold Spillers officiating. Burial followed in the Antioch Cemetery in Alto, La., under the direction of Brown-Holley Funeral Homes of Rayville.
Mr. Borden died Thursday, May 25, 2000, from injuries sustained in an automobile-train accident.
Survivors include his wife, Andrea “Andy” Borden of Rayville, LA; his daughter, Ashley Nicole Borden of Rayville, LA; his stepdaughters - Monica Grissom of Start, LA, Jessica Hughes of Tyler, TX and Cassie Hammett of West Monroe, LA; his parents, Carolyn and Charles Wayne Borden of Rayville, LA; his brothers, Chuck Borden of Start, LA, Tommy Borden of Monroe, LA, Kenneth Borden and Rodney Borden, both of Rayville, LA; his maternal grandmother, Norma Averitti of Ruston, LA; his paternal grandmother, Jewel L. Greer of Rayville, LA; his mother-in-law, Sallie Cook of Rayville, LA; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
Serving as pallbearers were Fred Murphy Jr., Chet Pulliam, Shawn Tibbs, Michael Hughes, Oran Scarborough and Richard Jackson . Honorary pallbearer was Ray Bendily.

BRANCH, Harrel Lee
WEATHERFORD, TX - Funeral services for Harrel Lee Branch, 85, were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, June 19, 2000, at the Baker Baptist Church with the Rev. Burton Cook officiating.
Burial followed in the Spring Creek Cemetery, under the direction of White ’s Funeral Home of Weatherford. Mr. Branch was born March 12, 1915 in Rayville, La., and moved to Fort Worth in 1967. In 1980 he moved to Parker County.
He attended school in Louisiana and married Maggie Red in 1935. He was an active farmer and gardner and was a member of the Baker Baptist Church. He died Thursday, June 15, 2000, at his home in Weatherford. Mr. Branch was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Georgia Branch.
Survivors include his wife, Maggie Branch of Weatherford, TX; his sons - Lee Branch and his wife, Jane, of McNeil, AR, Donald Branch of DeBerry, TX, Bobby Branch and his wife, Diane, of Weatherford, TX, Nelwyn Tharpe of Springtown, TX; Wayne Branch and his wife, Dedie, of Fort Worth, TX, Mickey Branch and his wife, Janice, of Kilgore, TX, and Ronnie Branch and his wife, Linda, of Weatherford, TX; a daughter - Dianne Middleton and her husband, Donald Ray, of River Oaks, TX; 19 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren; a brother, Autra Branch of Rayville, LA; and sisters Gladys Stovall and Lucille Bozeman, both of Rayville, LA.

BRANCH, Hilda Ann Rockett
RAYVILLE - Funeral services for Hilda Ann Rockett Branch, 80, of Rayville, La., will be held today, Thursday, June 22, 2000, at the First Baptist Church, with Dr. Ernest Winburn officiating.
Burial will follow in the Rayville Masonic Cemetery, under the direction of Brown-Holley Funeral Home of Rayville.
Mrs. Branch died Tuesday, June 20, at the Richardson Medical Center in Rayville after a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, T. B. Branch, her parents, Ruby and Willie Rockett, and brothers Don and Ralph Rockett.
Mrs. Branch was a member of the First Baptist Church in Rayville where she attended the Marie Hooks Sunday School Class and was a member of the Saints Alive group.
Mrs. Branch was also a member of the Garden Club, the Richland Parish Chapter of the Federation of Retired Teachers and Lambda Kappa.
After graduating with an education degree from Louisiana Tech University, Mrs. Branch worked for many years in the Richland Parish School System before her retirement.
She taught at both the Holly Ridge and Rayville high schools.
Survivors include her daughters - Belinda Crawford and her husband, Kenneth, of Rayville, LA and Darla Thames and her husband, Timmie Ray, of Rayville, LA; her son, Phillip “Bud” Branch of Rayville, LA; five grandchildren - Scott Crawford, Kayla Bridges, Craig Crawford and Amy Gladney, all of Rayville and Hannah Allen of Oak Ridge, LA; seven great grandchildren; her sisters - Betty Kilpatrick of Baton Rouge, LA and Mary O’Quinn of Clinton, AR; a brother, Richard Rockett of Rayville, LA; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Serving as pallbearers are her grandsons Scott and Craig Crawford; also serving are Shane Bridges, Thomas Allen, George Gladney III, Landon Rockett and Owen Rockett.
Memorials may be made to the Rayville First Baptist Church Finish the Dream Fund.

BURNS, Ludis A.
DELHI - Funeral services for Ludis A. Burns, 81, of Delhi, La., were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 29, 2000, at the Cox Funeral Home Chapel in Delhi with the Rev. Jimmy Harper officiating. Burial followed in the Crowville Masonic Cemetery, under the direction of Cox Funeral Homes of Delhi.
Mr. Burns was born May 23, 1919 in Grove, La., and died May 28, 2000 in Delhi. He is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Angie Lee Keen Burns; his brothers, Ray and J. T. Burns; and a sister, Clotese Byrd.
Survivors include his wife, Larue Hebert Burns of Delhi, LA; his daughters - Sondra Burns and her husband, Glen Barbay, of Baton Rouge, LA, Vickie Watson and her husband, Leslie, of Delhi, LA, Kathy Thomason and her husband, Tommy, of Rayville, LA, Cheryl Crawford and her husband, Danny, of Rayville, LA; grandsons Clint Lee Thomason and David Ludis Watson; a granddaughter, Brittany Larue Crawford; and a sister, Iler Roberts of Corsicana, TX.
Serving as pallbearers were George Chandler, Eddie Brandon, Mike Esters, Rod Cobb, Ray Adcock and Skipper Dickson.

CAIN, Ellis ‘Big Daddy’ Sr.
WINNSBORO - Funeral services for Ellis “Big Daddy” Cain Sr., 46, of Winnsboro, will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 21, 2000, at the Second Baptist Church of Winnsboro with the Rev. John Allen III officiating.
Burial will follow at the Cain Cemetery in Hollandale, Mississippi.
Mr. Cain died Sunday, July 16, 2000, at his residence.
He was a long time cross country truck driver and was employed with Winnsboro Elevator.

CLARK, Eloise Briley
WINNSBORO - Funeral services for Eloise Briley Clark, 75, of Winnsboro, were held at the Fish Bayou Baptist Church on Saturday, June 17, 2000, with the Revs. Kelly Clark and Jerry Chapman officiating. Burial followed in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Monroe, under the direction of Community Memorial Funeral Home of Winnsboro.
Mrs. Clark died June 15, 2000, at the St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe, following a brief illness. She was a resident of Franklin Parish, a saleswoman at Silverstein’s Dress Shop in Monroe, a homemaker and an active member of the Fish Bayou Baptist Church.
Mrs. Clark was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. F. Crosby, and by a sister, Louise Coil.
Survivors include her husband, John W. Clark of Winnsboro, LA; her daughters - Connie Dove and her husband, Charles, of Rayville, LA, Reita Lamb and her husband, Thomas, of Alto, LA, Dianne Robinson and her husband, Huey, of Minden, LA, Mary Webb and her husband, Bill, of Mt. View, MO, Linda Briley of Metarie, LA and Hilda Gentry of Farmerville, LA; a son, the Rev. Kelly Clark and his wife, Janice, of Winnsboro, LA; her sisters - Geraldine Hand of Monroe, LA, Frances Brennon of Monroe, LA and Jo Lyons of Houston, TX; 18 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Serving as pallbearers were Ryan Lamb, John Dove, Billy Huffman, Frank Shipley, Chad Vines and Kelly Clark Jr.

CUMPTON, Lester Scott
RAYVILLE - Funeral services for Lester Scott Cumpton, 50, of Monroe, La., were held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at the Brown-Holley Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Dan McClure and V. L. Dickson officiating. Burial followed in the Start Cemetery, under the direction of Brown-Holley Funeral Homes of Rayville.
Mr. Cumpton died July 10, 2000. He was a member of the College Town Assembly of God Church in Monroe.
Survivors include his mother, Ila Brewer Cumpton of Rayville, LA; five brothers - William and Karen Sue Cumpton of Hebert, LA, Jesse and Ruth Cumpton of Conroe, TX, Gene and Melba Cumpton of Hodge, LA, Freddie and Beth Cumpton of Rayville, LA and Roy and Katherine Cumpton of Swartz, LA; two sisters - Irma and Lavelle Borden and Hazel and Preston Miller, all of Rayville, LA; a host of nieces and nephews, and his many friends at the Frances Towers.
Serving as pallbearers were Michael Shows, Ben Clack, DeWayne Del Rio, Cody Uehling, Tommy Ray Cumpton and John Heath. Alternative pallbearers were Jerry Littleton, Michael Bickford and Justin Miller.

DAVIS, Gordon E. Sr.
RAYVILLE - Funeral services for Gordon E. Davis Sr., 73, of Rayville, La., were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 8, 2000, at the Rayville First Baptist Church, with Dr. Ernest Winburn officiating. Burial followed in the New Salem Cemetery in Girard, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Homes of Rayville.
Mr. Davis died Tuesday, June, 6, 2000, in Rayville. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Rayville and a World War II veteran, having served in the Pacific Theater. He was an avid gardner, fisherman and hunter.
Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mabel Davis, and a brother, James H. Davis.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Smith Davis of Rayville, LA; his sons - Gordon E. Davis Jr. and his wife, Donna, of West Monroe, LA, David Balfour and his wife, Linda, of Ashdown, AR and James Wesley Davis and his wife, Leigh, of Baton Rouge, LA; his daughter, Carla Kay Walters and her husband, Thomas, of Monroe, LA; his brothers - Robert Lee Davis and his wife, Mildred, of Start, LA and J. W. Davis and his wife, Rosemary, Rayville, LA; his sister - Edna Funderburk and her husband, Mitchell, of Start, LA; and eight grandchildren - Tori and Christopher Davis, Elizabeth and Carolyn Davis, Charles and Matthew Walters, and Mary Caroline and Benton Davis.
Serving as pallbearers were Ben Scott Pipes III, Joseph Bozeman Pipes, John Blackwell, Tom Rayburn, Brian Rawls and John Davis Miller. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Gordon Massengale, William “Bubba” Moore and Henry Rice.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, or to the charity of your choice.

ELLINGTON, Lurline Williams
RAYVILLE - Funeral services for Lurline Williams Ellington, 88, of Rayville, La., were held at 4 p.m. on Monday, July 3, 2000, at the Rayville United Methodist Church with the Revs. Ray Spiller and W. E. Nolan officiating. Burial followed in the Rayville Masonic Cemetery, under the direction of Brown-Holley Funeral Homes of Rayville.
Mrs. Ellington died Saturday, July 1, 2000, following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Ellington was a member of the Rayville United Methodist Church, the Lamda Kappa, Kappa Delta Sorority and the Mount Lebanon Historical Society. She was a graduate of Louisiana Tech University in 1933. In 1937 she married J. C. Ellington, and they were married for 45 years until his death in 1982.
Mrs. Ellington is also preceded in death by her parents, Emma Giles Williams and A. D. Williams Sr., and by brothers George D. Williams and A. D. Williams Jr.
Survivors include her daughters - Mary Jo and Lanny Greaves of Hammond, LA, Linda Kay and J. Cloyd Walker of Shreveport, LA and Jean and Charles Germany of Rayville, LA; a son, Edward Jay Ellington and his wife, Kathy, of Ruston, LA; nine grandchildren - Mark Landon Greaves, Melinda G. Parks, Kayla W. Barker, Tracey W. Thatcher, Alicia B. Thomas, Molly L. Boyd, Christopher Jay Ellington, Lindy M. Ellington and Parker Ellington; five great grandchildren - Amelia Greaves, Ben and Adam Parker, and Madison and Madeline Thomas; and a very special friend Jamie Harrell.
Serving as pallbearers were John D. Ramsey, J. L. Harrell, Noble Ellington, Billy Joe Lyles, Campbell Lyles and Leo Cheek.
Honorary pallbearers were J. E. Ball and Massey K. McConnell.
The family wishes to express their thanks to Rosie Kenly for her years of compassionate care and companionship and also to the other caregivers.
The family requests that any memorials be made to the organ fund at the Rayville United Methodist Church.

FRITH, Willis O. Jr.
RAYVILLE - Funeral services for Willis O. Frith Jr., 70, of Rayville, La., were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at the Mulhearn Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Harold Spillers officiating.
Burial followed in the Greer Cemetery, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Homes of Rayville.
Mr. Frith died June 3, 2000, at the Richardson Medical Center in Rayville. He was a member of the Baptist church, and served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was in the service station business for a number of years.
Mr. Frith was preceded in death by his parents, Willis O. Frith Sr. and Sadie G. Frith Bradshaw, and by a great granddaughter, Danielle Dunn.
Survivors include his wife, Althea M. Frith of Rayville, LA; four children - Carolyn Pounders and her husband, James, of Rayville, LA, Paul Frith and his wife, Mary, of Mer Rouge, LA, Patsy Ross and her husband, Marvin, of Start, LA and Mary LeBlanc and her husband, Robert, of Batchelor, LA; two sisters - Lois Temple and her husband, J. B., of Ferriday, LA and Edna Watts and her husband, Cecil, of Rayville, LA; a brother, Charles Preston Frith and his wife, Annie Ruth, of Rayville, LA; 11 grandchildren - Darryn, Jasen, Arnold, Paul Jr., Dolphus, Marty, Christina, Jamie, Brandy, Kandi and Bambi; and seven great grandchildren - Destiny, Brianna, Angel, Daniel, Devon and Taylor .
Grandsons Darryn, Terry, Jasen, Arnold, Jamie and Paul Jr. served as pallbearers.

FUTCH, Alfred P.
MONROE - Funeral services for Alfred P. Futch, 91, of West Monroe, La., were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 6, 2000, at the Parkview Baptist Church Chapel with the Rev. Lee R. McGlone and Dr. David Uth officiating. Burial followed in the Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery, under the direction of Brown-Holley Funeral Home of Rayville.
Mr. Futch died Tuesday, July 4, 2000. He was a member of the Parkview Baptist Church in Monroe, and had been a member of the Bethel Baptist Church near Rayville for over 50 years.
Mr. Futch was preceded in death by his first wife, Reedie Thrower Futch, and his second wife, Billie Dial Futch.
Survivors include his daughters - Barbara and Bill Scurlock of El Dorado, AR and Debbie and Ken Watson of Pineville, LA; his sons - Emmett and Pat Futch of West Monroe, LA, Kenneth and Paula Futch of Lafayette, LA and Jerry and Lana Futch of Monroe, LA; 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren and a special friend, Kathy Hammett.
Mr. Futch’s grandson’s served as pallbearers -- Kenneth Ray Futch, Stewart Futch, David Scurlock, John Scurlock, Keith Futch, Ed Williams and Kevin Alderson.
Memorials may be made to the Parkview Baptist Church, Bethel Baptist Church or to the Hospice Care of Glenwood.

GAHARAN, Charles Alexander
THIBODAUX, LA - Funeral services were held for Charles Alexander Gaharan, 55, at the St. Thomas Aquinas Center at Nicholls State University on May 23, 2000. Gaharan, a faculty member at the university for 31 years, died May 21, 2000.
Born in Jena, La., Gaharan was brought up and graduated from high school in Delhi, La.
He received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Louisiana Tech in Ruston, and later completed further graduate study at the University of Mississippi at Oxford.
To honor his memory, the flag at Nicholls State University was flown at half-staff for several days.
He was an assistant professor and the author of several articles on the Evangeline Baseball League.
“Nicholls State University and the Department of Languages and Literature have lost a good friend, teacher and colleague in Charles Gaharan,” said David Boudreaux, Nicholls Sate vice president for institutional advancement and former head of the English department. “I could always count on a helping hand from Charlie whenever there was something to do for the students.”
Garahan joined the university staff as an instructor in the English department in September 1969.
Seven years later he was promoted to assistant professor, a position he held until his death.
Survivors include his wife, Catherine Green Garahan of Thibodaux, LA; three sons and daughters-in-law - Charles and Celeste Gaharan of California, John and Rebekah Garahan of Collins, MS and Mark and Jennifer Gaharan of Atlanta, GA; a daughter, Shannon Gaharan; five grandchildren; two brothers, and his parents-in-law, Innis and Bussy Green of Rayville, LA.
