GARSEE, Joseph Melvin
RAYVILLE - Funeral services for Joseph Melvin Garsee, 81, of Rayville, La., were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 27, 2000, at the First United Pentecostal Church near Rayville with the Rev. Robert Stroud officiating. Burial followed in the Hall Cemetery in Rhymes, La., under the direction of Brown-Holley Funeral Homes of Rayville.
Mr. Garsee died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at the Richardson Medical Center in Rayville after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Garsee was a member of the First United Pentecostal Church of Rayville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Susie and William Garsee; a sister, Irene Carter; a brother, the Rev. Samuel Garsee; and a grandson, Kenneth Coates.
Survivors include his wife, Mae Garsee of Rayville, LA; his daughters - Effie Anding of West Monroe, LA, and Mary Lowland, Shirley Coates and Connie Garsee, all of Rayville, LA; his sons - James Garsee and Dennis Garsee, both of Alto, LA; his sisters - Leona McCumber of Tulsa, OK and Pauline Snelling of Hebert, LA; his brothers - Virgil Garsee of Alto, LA and Curtis Garsee of Columbia, LA; 15 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Serving as pallbearers were Randall Newman, Mark Coates, Jamie Garsee, Christopher Garsee, Dennis Garsee Jr. and Jeff Garsee. Honorary pallbearers were Tim Miller, Elmo Tarver and Eric Broadway.

GORDON, O. M.
START - Funeral services for O.M. Gordon, 84, of Start, La., were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at the Start Baptist Church with the Rev. Jeff Smart officiating.
Burial followed in the Start Cemetery, under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of West Monroe.
Mr. Gordon died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at the Richardson Medical Center in Rayville. He was a retired foreman for the Illinois Central Railroad. He was a member of Start Baptist Church and a former Mason.
Survivors include his wife, Irene Gordon of Start, LA; his children - Hubert Gordon and his wife, Jo, of Start, LA and Geraldine Robinson of Pearl, MS; his brothers, Howard Gordon of Cleveland, MS and Morris Gordon of Harrisville, MS; sisters Betty Walker of Florence, MS and Beatrice King of Franklin, TN; grandchildren Jody Gordon of Start, LA, Nikki Klein of Bowling Green, KY, Melissa Shedd of Pelahatchie, MS and Lynn Breedlove of Florence, MS; and three great grandchildren.

GREEN, William M. "Bussy"
RAYVILLE, LA - Funeral services for William M. “Bussy” Green, 80, of Rayville, La., were held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 28, 2000 at the St. David’s Episcopal Church with Father William Baldridge officiating. Burial followed in the Rayville Masonic Cemetery, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Homes of Rayville.
Mr. Green died July 26, 2000 in Monroe.
He was a member of the St. David’s Episcopal Church and a World War II Army Air Force Veteran, in which he was a B-24 tail gunner, serving in England.
He was a lifelong resident of Rayville, where he was a business owner and a sheriff’s deputy, and was very active with the youth and young people in many ways, from the Cub Scouts to baseball and sports referring. He taught many area young people how to swim and water ski.
Mr. Green was extremely well-loved throughout the community and will be remembered for his kindness and his lifelong sense of fun.
Survivors include his wife, Innes Green of Rayville, LA; two sons - William M. Green Jr. of San Fransico, CA and James M. Green of Lake St. John, LA; two daughters - Catherine Green Garahan of Thibideaux, LA and Ellis Green Norris of Simmsboro, LA; a sister, Mrs. J. Foster “Teeny” Jones of Rayville, LA; six grandchildren - Charles Garahan, John Garahan, Mark Garahan, Shannon Garahan, Chris Norris and Jim Norris; and six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Serving as pallbearers were Joe Morris, Mike Adcock, Jesse Cochran, Ed Jones, John Jennings, Bill Pipes, Bubba Chaney and Doug Dopson.
Honorary pallbearers were the men of St. David’s Episcopal Church, Bernard Waite, Carlyle O’Neal, Aubrey Solomon, George Franklin, Sellers Aycock Sr., Sellers Aycock Jr., George Ineichen, Mack Marlette, Don Hebert, Don Cumpton, Jimy Berry, Walter Cochran, Roy Powell, Bennie Haynes, John Billy Hanchey, Roger Clay, Vernon Freeland and Dr. Lester Wayne Johnson .

GRIFFIN, Elaine S.
WINNSBORO - Funeral services for Elaine S. Griffin, 71, of Delhi, La., were held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 28, 2000, at the Family Worship Center with the Rev. Eddie Simmons officiating. Burial followed at the Memorial Park Cemetery, under the direction of Community Memorial Funeral Home of Winnsboro.
Mrs. Griffin died Tuesday, July 25, 2000, at the Richland Parish Hospital in Delhi after an extended illness.
Mrs. Griffin was a homemaker and a member of the Family Worship Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Griffin, and her parents, Willie Hebert Sones and Addie Mae Guyon Sones.
Survivors include her children, Michael Griffin of West Monroe, LA and Kenneth Griffin and Vicki Alexander, both of Delhi, LA; her step-father, Luther Leachman of Dubach, LA; a sister, Joyce Meyers and her husband, Lester, of Monroe, LA; four grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Serving as pallbearers were Harold Sones, Rodney Sones, Rickey Meyers, Larry Meyers, James Meyers and Jeffery Mears. Honorary pallbearers were Roy Bullock and Daryl Akiona.

HARRIS, Henry
RAYVILLE - Funeral services for Henry Harris, 96, of Rayville were held on Saturday, July 15, 2000, at the Tennant Funeral Home Chapel in Rayville, La., with the Rev. Van H. Brass of Mt. Zion Baptist Church officiating, and the Rev. C. R. Jackson assisting. Burial was in the Love and Charity Cemetery, under the direction of Tennant Funeral Home of Rayville.
Mr. Harris was born October 18, 1903, and died Thursday, July 13, 2000, at the Richardson Medical Center in Rayville.
He was a native of Richland Parish, a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church and a retired school employee.
He will be sadly missed by a sister, Izola Black of Rayville, LA; a brother, Quiller Harris of Milwaukee, WI; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Serving as pallbearers were his nephews, Andrew Barnes Jr., Thurman Brown, Lorenzo Brown, Ernest Brown, Donnell Barnes and D’Angelo Kelley.

HARWELL, Ersell
MANGHAM - Funeral services for Ersell Harwell, 75, of Mangham, La., were held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at the Lone Cherry Baptist Church near Mangham, with the Revs. Doyle Adams, Richard Brooks and Rick Aultman officiating.
Burial followed in the Gwin Cemetery, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Homes of Rayville.
Mr. Harwell died July 3, 2000. He was a member and deacon of Lone Cherry Baptist Church, as well as a member of the Mangham Lions Club. He was affiliated with the Central Gin for over 35 years.
Survivors include his wife, Blanche Harwell of Mangham, LA; his sons - Robert Neal Harwell of Mangham, LA and Larry Glenn Harwell of Greensboro, NC; a brother, Carl Harwell of Mangham, LA; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers were Eugene Vincent, Jimmy Lowery, Billy Reese Johnston, Gary Williams, Ben Williams, Joel Williams and Campbell Lyles.
Serving as honorary pallbearers were Leo Cheek, Bill Bruce, Jim Bruce, David Bell, Thomas Thames and the deacons at Lone Cherry Baptist Church.

JACKSON, John Graham
RAYVILLE - Funeral services for John Graham Jackson , 75, of Archibald, La., were held at the Mulhearn Funeral Home Chapel in Rayville on Friday, June 23, 2000, at 2 p.m., with Bro. Stan Fortenberry officiating. Burial followed in the Lynn Cemetery in Archibald, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Homes of Rayville.
Mr. Jackson died June 21, 2000 at the St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe. He was a member of the Archibald Church of Christ and a World War II Navy veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Smith Jackson of Archibald, LA; five children - Glenda Jackson Stephenson and Elizabeth Lenore Jackson , both of Archibald, LA, Jesse Clifton Jackson of Lewisburg, TN, Wanda Gwin of Archibald, LA and Sharon Stephenson of Mangham, LA; nine grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Mr. Jackson ’s grandsons and family will serve as pallbearers.

JINKS, Alma Louise
DELHI - Funeral services for alma Louise Jinks, 55, of Delhi, La., were held at 10 a.m. on Sunday, June 4, 2000, at the Cox Funeral Home Chapel in Delhi, with the Rev. Bobby White officiating. Burial followed in the Faith Memorial Park Cemetery, under the direction of Cox Funeral Home of Delhi.
Mrs. Jinks died June 2, 2000, at the Richland Parish Hospital in Delhi.
She was born in Delhi on April 20, 1945 to John Henry Jinks and Maudie Alma Howard Jinks.
She is preceded in death by her father, John H. Jinks. Survivors include her mother, Maudie Alma Jinks of Delhi, LA; her brothers - William B. Jinks of Downsville, LA and John Elvis Jinks Jr., Billy R. Jinks and Henry E. Jinks, all of Delhi, LA; and her sisters - Mary Nell Overstreet of Rayville, LA, Judy Goodsen of Fayetteville, AR, and Myrtle Powell, Shirley M. Dickson and Beatrice McKibbens, all of Delhi, LA.
Serving as pallbearers were Ronnie Dickson, Thomas Frost, Justin Dickson, Steve Jinks, John Jinks and Chris Jinks.

JOHNSON, Millie
DELHI - Funeral services for Millie Johnson , 76, of Delhi, La., were held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at the Newton Baptist Church, with the Revs. Terry Ganey and Eddy Shoemaker officiating. Burial followed in the Newton Cemetery, under the direction of Cox Funeral Homes of Delhi.
Mrs. Johnson died June 4, 2000 at the Richland Parish Hospital in Delhi. She was born May 9, 1924 in Delhi and was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Foskett and Ida Williamson Foskett; and by her husband, Willis Johnson .
Survivors include her daughters - Billie Virginia Digiovanni of Jackson , MS, Louise Simmons of Friendswood, TX, Glenda Faye of Marsh, TX, Brenda Gaye Palmarozzi of Beaumont, TX and Joyce Ann Fricks of Delhi, LA; a son, Willis Johnson Jr. of Delhi, LA; a sister, Lillie Mae York of Delhi, LA; 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Her grandsons served as pallbearers.

KIRKLAND, Elaine Hughes
RAYVILLE - Funeral services for Elaine Hughes Kirkland, 84, of Rayville, La., were held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 7, 2000, at the Mulhearn Funeral Home Chapel, with the Revs. Ray Spiller and Frank Jones officiating. Burial followed in the Rayville Masonic Cemetery, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Homes of Rayville.
Mrs. Kirkland died Tuesday, July 4, 2000. She was a member of the Rayville United Methodist Church, and the Phi Lambda Pi, Delta Kappa Gamma, Kappa Kappa Iota sororities. She received her two-year degree from Mississippi Southwest Junior College, her four-year degree from Louisiana State University, a Masters degree from Mississippi College, and her Plus 30 from Louisiana State University.
She moved to Rayville as a single parent in 1944, with a two-year degree and her five year-old son. She began her long and rewarding teaching/coaching career at Holly Ridge Elementary School where she coached the boys basketball team on a dirt court.
In 1949 she transferred to Start High School, teaching seventh grade and coaching the girls basketball team. In 1956 She accepted a teaching position at Rayville Junior High School and taught there until her retirement in 1975. Her retirement was spent tutoring various neighborhood children in reading and tending to her beautiful azaleas at her home on Spruce Street.
Mrs. Kirkland’s fondest memories were of the days that she spent with her basketball teams. She taught many girls not only the love of the sport, but she also provided them with a role model for conducting themselves as ladies, both on and off the basketball court.
Survivors include her son, Kenneth M. Kirkland of Collinston, LA; and her cousins, Sandrea Howell of Oak Grove and Mary Bell Blailock of McComb, MS.
Serving as pallbearers were William Jennings, Wes Bolton, James Berry, Pete Mulhearn, Tim Coates and James Harrell. Honorary pallbearers were Drs. Ralph Abraham, Leon Dupeire, James Padgett and Mr. Alvin Little.
The family would like to thank James W. Berry, attorney at law, Rachel Collins and Lucinda Jenkins, for their compassionate care of Mrs. Kirkland during her illness.
The family requests that any memorials be made to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

LAIRD, Lela Mae
DELHI- Funeral services for Lela Mae Laird, 80, of Delhi, La., were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 18, 2000, at the New Hope Church of God with the Rev. Jerry Salisbury and the Rev. Ronnie Thompson officiating.
Burial followed at the Unity Cemetery, under the direction of Brown-Holley Funeral Homes of Oak Grove.
Mrs. Laird died Thursday, June 15, 2000, at the St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe after a lengthy illness.
She was a member of the New Hope Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry L. Laird.
Survivors include her children, Earl Manning and his wife, Ida, of Pioneer, LA, Earline McMillan and her husband, John, of Pioneer, LA, Mattie Estis of Pioneer, LA, Danny Henshaw and his wife, Betty, of Farmerville, LA, Dorothy Crain and her husband, Tommy, of St. Francisville, LA, Barbara Blaylock and her husband, Richard, of Rayville, LA, and Chester Henshaw and his wife, Dee, of Oak Grove, LA; a brother, Jack Hartley and his wife, Frances, of Stuttgart, AR; sisters - Irene Laird of Tallulah, LA, Lula Massey and her husband, B.A., of Monroe, LA and Dorothy Avery and her husband, Kenneth, of Alexandria, LA; 19 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers were Kevin White , Jimmy Manning, Jonathan McMillan, Danny Henshaw Jr., Shelby McMillan, John McMillan Jr. and David McMillan. Honorary pallbearer was Tyler Blaylock.

McKNIGHT, Dorothy Ruth Higgins
DELHI - Funeral services for Dorothy Ruth McKnight, 73, of Delhi, La., were held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at the Cox Funeral home Chapel in Delhi with the Rev. Neal Fryer officiating. Burial followed in the Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery in Monroe, under the direction of Cox Funeral Homes of Delhi.
Mrs. McKnight was born October 13, 1926 in Delhi. She died June 3, 2000, at the Richardson Medical Center in Rayville. On September 19, 1947 She married Hoyt Clinton McKnight Sr. in Delhi.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Lee Higgins and Ollie Ophelia Phillips Higgins; her son, Tommy Dee McKnight; and a granddaughter, Shellie Margaurite McKnight.
Survivors include her husband, Hoyt Clinton McKnight Sr. of Delhi, LA; her son, Hoyt Clinton McKnight Jr. of Mantee, MS; her daughters - Shelia Lane McKnight of Fort Worth, TX and Sherri McKnight Coleman of Marietta, GA; her brother, Percy Higgins of Holly Ridge, LA; and her sisters - Robbie Raynes of Winnsboro, LA, Bertha Sturdivant of Delhi, LA, and Dolly Mae Henry and Frances Bearden, both of West Monroe, LA; and four grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers were David Sturdivant, Ken Sturdivant, Terry McKnight, Clayton Hopper, Willie A. Tatum and Marion McIntyre.

McKNIGHT, Lillie Mae
RAYVILLE - Funeral services for Lillie Mae McKnight, 70, of DeRidder, La., were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 14, 2000, at the Brown-Holley Funeral Home Chapel in Rayville, with the Rev. Jimmy Gibson officiating. Burial followed in the McKnight Cemetery in Holly Ridge, La., under the direction of Brown-Holley Funeral Homes of Rayville.
Mrs. McKnight died July 11, 2000. She was a homemaker and a former resident of Rayville, La. She was a member of the Midway Baptist Church.
Survivors include her sons - Odis McKnight of Olla, LA and John McKnight of Rayville, LA; a daughter, Frances Deason of DeRidder, LA; two brothers, W. E. McHand of Rayville, LA and Charles McHand of Channelview, TX; a sister, Pearlie Mae Knott of Topack, AZ; 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers were John McHand, Ernest Deason, Homer Sansett Jr., Charlie Morrison, John Thomas and Michael McCullough.
