MANGHAM - Funeral services for Mable E. Rogers, 77, of Rayville, La., were held at the Lone Cherry Baptist Church in Mangham at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 14, 2000, with the Rev. Richard Brooks officiating. Burial followed in the Lone Cherry Cemetery, under the direction of Cox Funeral Homes of Delhi.
Mrs. Rogers was born January 16, 1923 in Franklin Parish. She died July 12, 2000 at the Richardson Medical Center in Rayville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alva L. Rogers Sr.; her parents, John Henry Emondson and Lydia Evans Emondson; a son, Lowell Rogers; and a daughter, Teresa Rogers.
Survivors include her sons - Roy Rogers of Zuni, VA and Bobby Rogers of LaGrange, KY; her daughters - Louise Jones of Mangham, LA, Agnes Mosley of Holly Ridge, LA and Beatrice Stephenson of Mangham, LA; a half brother, J. H. Emondson of Bastrop, LA; a sister, Flora McDaniel of Bastrop, LA; and two half sisters - Florendia Cameron of Bastrop, LA and Polly Emondson of West Monroe, LA; 11 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers were Everett McDaniel, Bill McVay, Joel Wayne Mosley, Prentice Jones Jr., and Jamey Jones.

RUSSELL, Ruth
DELHI - Funeral services for Ruth Russell, 90, of Delhi, Louisiana , were held at the Harmony Baptist Church on Sunday, June 11, 2000, at 2 p.m., with the Revs. Alfred Garvin and Buck Curry officiating.
Burial followed at the Delhi Masonic Cemetery, under the direction of Cox Funeral Homes of Delhi.
Mrs. Russell died June 9, 2000 at the Richland Parish Hospital in Delhi.
She was a member of the Harmony Baptist Church.
Mrs. Russell was born September 2, 1909 in Delhi, to Richard Garley Sr. and Julia Kreig Garley, both of whom preceded her in death. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Kelly Russell; her son, Clyde Randolph Russell; her grandson, Travis Williams; and three sisters, Alice Helams, Bertha McKnight and Bessie H. Garley.
Survivors include her sons - Cecil Russell and his wife, Vinnie, of Delhi, LA, Albert Russell and his wife, Marie, of Mooringsport, LA, Stanley Russell of Mooringsport, LA; and Danny Russell and his wife, Cindy, of Delhi, LA; her daughters - Mary Ann Warrington and her husband, Bobby, of Shreveport, LA, Emily Louise Williams and her husband, Howard, of Quitman, MS; her brother - Richard Garley and his wife, Laura, of Delhi, LA; her sisters - Lillian Norris and her husband, Irvin, of Stone Mountain, GA and Dorothy Bradley and her husband, C.P., of Delhi, LA; 23 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers were Edward Warrington, Scott Russell, Tommy Russell, James Kelly “Pete” Russell, Joey Lee and Steven Williams. Honorary pallbearers were Cory Russell, Dale Allen Jones and Darrell Stroud.

SYKES, E. C. "Heavy" Sr.
DELHI - Funeral services for E. C. “Heavy” Sykes Sr., 63, of Oyster Creek, Texas , were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 29, 2000, at the Cox Funeral Home Chapel in Delhi with the Rev. Jeff Sykes officiating. Burial followed in the Newton Cemetery in Delhi, under the direction of Cox Funeral Homes of Delhi.
Mr. Sykes died July 25, 2000 in Houston, Texas , after a six-year battle with cancer.
He was a resident of the Oyster Creek, Tx., are since 1967 and a former resident of Delhi.
He was a retired General Foreman with U.S. Contractors and a former fire chief for Oyster Creek for 15 years. He was a volunteer fire fighter for many years.
Mr. Sykes was preceded in death by his father, Elbert Sykes, and a brother, J. C. Sykes.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Wilcher Sykes of Oyster Creek, TX; his sons - Elbert Sykes Jr. of Oyster Creek, TX and Thomas Sykes, and his wife, Susan, of Sante Fe, TX; his daughter, Shelia McBeth and her husband, Ronnie, of Lake Jackson , TX; his mother, Eunice Garrett Sykes of Vicksburg, MS; his brothers, Donald Sykes of Hernando, MS and Billy Ray Sykes of Delhi, LA; his sisters - Ollie Hull of Vicksburg, MS and Alice Posey of Lake Providence, MS; and six grandchildren.
Mr. Sykes’s nephews served him as pallbearers.

THARPE, Charles Peyton
DELHI - Funeral services for Charles Peyton Tharpe, 64, of Delhi, La., were held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at the First Baptist Church in Delhi with the Rev. Marcus Murphy officiating. Burial followed in the Delhi Masonic Cemetery, under the direction of Cox Funeral Homes of Delhi.
Mr. Tharpe was born September 25, 1935 in Epps, La., and died May 28, 2000, at the Richland Parish Hospital in Delhi.
He was a United States Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Any planned memorials may be made to the First Baptist church of West Monroe (Organ Fund), or to the First Baptist Church of Delhi (Sound System).
He was preceded in death by his father, H. P. Tharpe, and a sister, Betty Louise Parker.
Survivors include his wife, Delores Robinson Tharpe of Delhi, LA; his sons - Charles P. Tharpe II and his wife, Tammy, of Ridgeland, MS and Hank Tharpe of Monroe, LA; his grandson, Christopher Tharpe of Ridgeland, MS; his mother, Vona Mays Tharpe of Delhi, LA and his sisters - Delora LaPrairie and Elizabeth Swett, both of Delhi, LA.
Serving as pallbearers were Bob Mikell, Billy Ray Newton, Lester Harrell, Bud LaPrairie, George Swett, Travis “Cootsie” Richards, Dwain “Buddy” Tharpe and Bruce Parker. His nephews served as honorary pallbearers.

THEOBALD, Judy C.
KANSAS CITY, KS - Funeral services for Judy C. Theobald, 50, of Kansas City, Kansas, were held at the D. W. Newcomer’s Sons Floral Hills Chapel in Kansas City, with burial following in the Floral Hills Cemetery.
Mrs. Theobald died May 22, 2000 at the St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, following a lengthy illness. She was born November 9, 1949, in Rayville, La.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Marjorie Freeland Wiggins Marus; her father, Lionell Eubanks; and a stepfather, Frank Wiggins, all formerly of Rayville.
Survivors include her husband, Bill Theobald Jr.; a son, Larry Miller; a son and daughter-in-law, Wes and Kari Hill of Roeland Park, KS; a daughter, Amy Hill of Wichita Falls, TX; a brother, Jerry Wiggins of San Antonio, TX; a sister, Linda Hammett of Bastrop, LA; a sister-in-law, Barbara Hazelton and her husband, Larry, of Olathe, KS; a niece, Sherri Ketterer and her husband, Bill, of Scottsdale, AZ; aunts and uncles Juanita Bizzell of Yukon, OK, Evelyn and Will Dark of West Monroe, LA; uncle, Vernon and Lee Freeland of Rayville; special friend Bob Johnston of Rayville; and many other friends and family.

TONNANG, Matthew Bernhard
MONTICELLO, LA - Graveside services for Matthew Bernhard Tonnang, infant son of Heather Lynn Tonnang of Delhi, La., were held Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000 at 10 a.m. at the Herringville Cemetery in Monticello, La., with Victor Regan officiating.
Burial was under the direction of Cox Funeral Homes of Delhi. Baby Tonnang died at the LSU Medical Center-Monroe.
Baby Tonnang is survived by his mother, his grandparents and great grandparents - Jean Graham of Delhi, Irene and Charles Tonnang of Delhi, Barbara and Eugene Graham of Monticello, LA; and three uncles - Jonathan Graham, Lonnie Graham and David Graham, all of Delhi, LA.

WEEMS, Benny
RAYVILLE, LA - Funeral services for Benny Weems, 67, of Rayville, La., were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 23, 2000, at the Brown-Holley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Harold Spillers officiating. Burial followed in the New Salem Cemetery, under the direction of Brown-Holley Funeral Home of Rayville.
Mr. Weems died July 21, 2000 at his residence.
Survivors include his wife, Jan Weems of Rayville, LA; his son - Brad Weems and his wife, Sharon, of West Monroe, LA; his daughter - Nan Collard of Aurora, CO; his grandsons - Matt Weems of West Monroe, LA and Colton Collard of Aurora, CO; his brother, Michael Lebaron of DeVille, LA; and his sisters, Mary Elizabeth Lawrence of Ruston, LA and Emma Jean Clements of Morganville, KY.
Serving as pallbearers were Ronnie Holloway, Keith Holloway, Elton Farrar, Pete Farrar, John Brown and Matt Weems.

WEST, Billy Joe “Red”
CROWVILLE, LA - Funeral services for Billy Joe “Red” West, 63, of Delhi, La., were held Thursday, June 22, 2000, at the Lamar Baptist Church with the Revs. Marion Collier and Terry Ganey officiating. Burial followed in the Crowville Masonic Cemetery, under the direction of Community Memorial Funeral Home of Winnsboro.
Mr. West died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at the North Monroe Hospital. He was a native and resident of Franklin Parish, a farmer and a member of the Lamar Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Jeannette H. West of Delhi, LA; his children - Cindy West and Thomas Michael West and his wife, Judith, all of Crowville, LA; his sisters - Mary Lou Wooley of Delhi, LA and Bessie Williams and her husband, Norman, of Natchez, MS; four grandchildren, two great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Douglas Hammons, Paul Thompson, Tommy Berryhill, Ronnie Childress, Toby Kelly and Jody Kelly. Honorary pallbearers were James Arceneaux and Arla Hollis.

WILLIAMS, Hayward B.
MONROE, LA - Funeral services for Hayward B. Williams, 30, of Rayville, La., will be held July 1, 2000 at 11 a.m. at the Miller Funeral Home in Monroe, with the Rev. C. C. Smith of Las Vegas, Nevada officiating. Burial will follow, under the direction of Miller Funeral Home.
Visitation will be Friday, June 30, from 1-6 p.m. at the Miller Funeral Home, off Hwy. 165 S. in Monroe.
Mr. Williams died June 25, 2000 at the LSU-Monroe Medical Center, following a lengthy illness. He loved to watch basketball and to ride horses. He was a construction worker.
Survivors include his parents, Nathaniel and Debra Smith of Rayville, LA; a daughter, Britney Wesley and a son, Hayward Williams Jr., a sister, Tasha Alexander and a brother, Nathanial Smith Jr., all of Las Vegas, NV; and a host of relatives and friends.

WILSON, Douglas Carl
MANGHAM, LA - Funeral services for Douglas Carl “Big Daddy” Wilson, 57, of Mangham, La., were held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 5, 2000, at the Mangham United Methodist Church with the Rev. Betty Swanson officiating. Burial followed in the Forest Cemetery in Forest, La., under the direction of Brown-Holley Funeral Homes of Rayville.
Mr. Wilson died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, after a sudden illness.
Mr. Wilson attended the Mangham United Methodist Church.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Eloise Watson Wilson.
Survivors include his wife, Vickie Wilson of Mangham, LA; his children - David Scott Wilson of Mangham, LA, Michelle Wilson of Birmingham, AL and Ashley Sweet and her husband, Paul, of Monroe, LA; a grandchild, Cody Wilson of Birmingham, AL; an expected grandchild, Ainsley Belle Sweet, who is expected in December and who Mr. Wilson was looking forward to loving; his father, Lloyd Carl “Puddle” Wilson of Columbia, LA; a sister, Peggy Williams and her husband, Sonny, of Tallulah, LA; and three nephews - Chad Williams of Tallulah, LA, Phillip Parker of Columbia, LA and Jeff Parker of Savannah, GA.
Serving as pallbearers were Joe Chapman, Dusty Hales, Billy Sullivan, David Barton, Bubba Bell, Donald Gregory, Dick Brown and Jimmy Ray Ogden. Honorary pallbearers were Charles Mesita, Buddy McKinney, Ronnie Mixon, Rusty Wilson, Ronnie Cockerham, Jerry Cowart, Jody Murphy, Benny Murphy and Billy Don Barmore.

BURNS, ETHEL KEMP HYDE
Retired director of Volunteer Services, she died Thursday, April 8, 2004, in Kentwood. She was 88 and a resident and native of Hammond. Burial in Greenlawn Cemetery, Hammond. Survived by two daughters, Sybil Burns and Gail Dawson, both of Hammond; four granddaughters, Gaynell Barnett of Baton Rouge, Robin Messer of Gonzales, Nancy Shaffer of Baton Rouge and Amy Brumfield of Hammond; 13 great-grandchildren, Christie Brose, Sean Barnett, Earl Barnett, Bobby Barnett, Jamie Barnett, Brandon Golson, Wesley Golson, Megan Romaire, Ryan Messer, Ashley Sanders, Zachary Shaffer, Joshua Shaffer and Alvon E. Brumfield II; five great-great-grandchildren, Dakota, Justin and Savannha Brose and Gabby and Triston Barnett; numerous nieces and nephews, including Al Hyde, Thejoal Powell, Alice Bentley, Raby Jean Williams, Harold Burns, Rusty McFarlane, Wilbur Burns and Terry Burns. Preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Robert "Bob" Burns; parents, Albert Edward "Bert" and Leonora Irene Kemp Hyde; two brothers, Paul and Howard "Bert" Hyde; a sister, Edith Hyde Hooks; and a beloved granddaughter, Greta Gail Golson. Casketbearers were Al Hyde, Randy Messer, Ronnie Barnett, Chike Powell, Alvon Brumfield and Ricky Clark. She was a member of the American Hospital Association, Louisiana Hospital Association and Fern Leaf Chapter No. 24 of the Order of the Eastern Star for 67 years. She was also a member of the Southern Methodist Church. She was a past worthy matron and secretary for 32 years and past Grand Martha for the Order of Eastern Star for the state of Louisiana . She was a youth director at her church for five years. Additionally, she served as president of the Hammond Elementary and Hammond High School Parent Teacher associations. She received a life PTA membership in 1963. She was a past president of the advisory board of the Hammond Senior Center and was Senior of the Year in 1998. She regularly chaperoned the high school's girl volleyball and basketball teams as well as the teenage dances throughout the city. She also served as mother advisor of the Order of the Rainbow Girls for six years and was the director of Volunteer Services at 7th Ward Hospital for 18 years.

CARPENTER, GWENDOLYN KLING
A homemaker and resident of St. Amant, she died Friday, April 9, 2004, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, Baton Rouge. She was 45 and a native of St. Amant. interment in Cornerview Cemetery. She is survived by her husband, Harold Carpenter, St. Amant; parents, Carlyn L. Kling and Geraldine B. Kling; grandmother, Sally Bourque; two daughters and a son-in-law, Amy C. and John Ruff, St. Amant, and Jodie Carpenter and fiance Brett Daigle, Gonzales; a sister and brother-in-law, Karen and Patrick Kelley, Geneva, Fla.; and a brother and sister-in-law, Kevin and Cindy Kling, Cincinnati. Preceded in death by grandparents, Mervin Bourque Sr. and Claude and Alix Kling.

DELMORE, FELBERT "BABY"
A resident of Baton Rouge and a native of Prairieville, he died Friday, April 2, 2004, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. interment in Mount Gillion Cemetery. Survived by his father, Freddie Delmore; three daughters, Carloe Davis, Carleen Davis and Makeba Hutley, all of Hartford, Conn.; four sisters, Hattie L. Anthony, Dorothy Pate, Elmer Williams and Delores Delmore; two brothers, Felton Delmore and Larry Freeman; and five grandchildren, five aunts and two uncles.

EDWARDS, WILLIE
A retired welder with Boyce Machinery Corp. and a resident of Baton Rouge, he died Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at 12:54 a.m. at his home. He was 85 and a native of Flatwoods. interment in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Survived by his wife of 65 years, Lula Salard Edwards of Baton Rouge; a daughter and son-in-law, Delores "Dee" and Donald Shelton of Zachary; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Kelly and Lucy Edwards of Greenwell Springs, Jimmy and June Edwards of Prairieville, Ronald "Ron" Edwards of Baton Rouge and Danny and Debra Edwards of Baker; a brother, J.T. Edwards of El Cajon, Calif.; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Martin Edwards; a grandson, Michael Darren Edwards; three brothers and four sisters. Pallbearers were Scotty and Steven Shelton and Brian, Matthew, Adam and Daniel Edwards. Honorary pallbearer was Donald Shelton. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

HEBERT, ELTON PIERRE , SR.
A retired engineering aide with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, a resident of St. Amant and a native of Brusly, he died at 1:10 a.m. Friday, April 9, 2004, at his home. He was 86 and a U.S. Army veteran, having served with the infantry in Germany and France during World War II from 1941 to 1945. He donated his body to the LSU School of Medicine at New Orleans. He hoped that in doing so, he could help someone else in the future. He is survived by his wife, Ernestine Ulmer Hebert; two daughters, Beverly Ann Hebert and Doris Hebert Jones, both of Maurepas; two sons, Charlie Hebert, Portland, Ore. and Elton P. Hebert Jr., St. Amant; a son-in-law, John W. Jones; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Alexis Hebert; his mother, Clelia Bourg Hebert; a brother, Herman Hebert; and sisters, Doris Hebert Gillingham, Myrtis Hebert Varnell and Lucille Hebert Fourroux. Dad was an active member of the Addis Veterans of Foreign War Post 3785 and was a member of American Legion McKinley Bourg Post 160. He served on the Westside Honor Guard of the American Legion and VFW. He was an active community volunteer and a member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. He was very active in the West Baton Rouge Council on Aging. For the past few years, he worked for the West Baton Rouge Parks and Recreation as custodian at the Addis VFW Hall. He was an usher at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Baton Rouge, and a past usher at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Brusly. He loved traveling, camping, hiking and fishing with family and friends. He loved the scenic wonders of the United States and never tired of visiting the outdoors. He was a loving, caring and giving father and grandfather. He was a person who gave to everybody--anything that he could do, he would do for anybody. He will indeed be missed by everybody who knew him.

HYMEL, CARMEN ROBERT OUBRE
A retired licensed practical nurse with 45 years of service in the office of Dr. Earl Schexnayder, she died Friday, April 9, 2004, in Baton Rouge. She was 72 and a resident and native of Donaldsonville. Entombment in St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church Mausoleum. Survived by her husband, A.C. Hymel, Donaldsonville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy and Roger Heffron, Kenosha, Wis., and Debbie and Bobby Schexnayder, Donaldsonville; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Robert and Marcia Duran Oubre, Salvador, Brazil, Kenneth and Belinda Medine Oubre, Donaldsonville, Steven and Cindy Cowan Oubre, Tualatin, Ore., and Richard Oubre, Charlotte, N.C.; stepdaughters, Marla Hymel, Baton Rouge, and Stacy and husband Byron Latino, Donaldsonville; stepson and wife, Drew and Cheryl Hymel, Donaldsonville; grandchildren, Kenneth, Kayla, Lee, Nicholas and Patrick Oubre, Ryan and Sydney Schexnayder and Ryan and Ian Heffron; stepgrandchildren, Rafaela Duran and Brad and Todd Hymel; cousins, including Marion Poirrier Zeringue; nieces and nephews, and numerous sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, aunts and uncles. Preceded in death by her parents, William A. Robert and Marie Dugas Robert; aunts and uncles who raised her, Gladys and Joseph Poirrier and Laure and Emile Landry; her first husband, Cecil J. Oubre; and a brother, William A. Robert. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Ladies Altar Society and AARP.

JOHNSON, ALEXANDER ARTHUR "ALEX"
On Thursday, April 1, 2004, our beloved son, Alex Johnson , won the battle and was proclaimed victorious as he went home to be with his heavenly Father. He was born in Baton Rouge on June 29, 1993. His entire life was such a blessing to his mom, dad, older brother, dog Flash, and to everyone with whom he came in contact. He was a member of The Chapel on the Campus where he attended church and Sunday school. He was a student in the fifth grade at Dutchtown Primary and a member of the Prairieville Bronco's Championship Football Team. His coaches and teammates nicknamed him "Buffalo." He led the charge on defense as the team's starting free safety. Alex was also the starting catcher on his baseball team. He was a fierce competitor in every aspect of life and was an inspiration to all who knew him. Alex was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Thomas Johnson ; his maternal grandfather, Ted Arthur; his uncle, Danny Arthur; and his aunt, Tommie Johnson . He is survived by his parents, Kell and Mary Johnson ; his older brother, Taylor Johnson ; paternal grandmother, Dorothy Johnson ; and maternal grandmother, Maureen Arthur. He is also survived by seven aunts, Juanita Payne, Connie Golden, Lynda Marks, Ellen McWilliams, Susan DeMers, Annette Arthur and Peggy Arthur; six uncles, Rusty Payne, Jerry Golden, Peter Marks, Jeff McWilliams, Floyd DeMers and Teddy Arthur; and his cousins, Rusty Payne, Adrianna White , Charity Wilson, Joel Golden, Amy Breaux, Gerry Breaux, Wade Breaux, Courtney Breaux, Jonathan Marks, Ryan Marks, Kristen Argondizzo, Jeffrey McWilliams, Michael McWilliams, Catherine DeMers, Jessica DeMers, Cherie Arthur, Wayne Ebeling and Terry Harlan. Pallbearers will be Peter Marks, Ted Arthur, Bob Wood and Keith Mayeaux. Honorary pallbearers were Alex's uncle, Floyd DeMers, the coaches and players of the Prairieville Bronco's Football Team and the Fifth Grade Boys' Sunday School Class from The Chapel on the Campus. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Ochsner Hospital and Duke University Medical Center for their loving care and devotion to their son.
