Mr. Rufus “June” Roberson, Jr. (08-27-2006)
Services for Mr. Rufus “June” Roberson Jr., 80, of Spencer, will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, Aug. 28, 2006, at First Baptist Church Sterlington with Bro. J. E. Brown, Bro. Ray Royal, and Bro. Donald Reeves, officiating. Burial will follow at Liberty Cemetery in Linville, LA under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home Monroe.

Rufus “June” Roberson, Jr. was born on February 15, 1926 and went home to be with his Heavenly Father on August 26, 2006. He was a loving husband, daddy, granddaddy, brother and friend. June was a faithful servant to his Lord Jesus Christ. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sterlington where he served as a deacon and a member of the choir. He was a dedicated employee at IMC chemical plant for 41 years and retired in 1989. He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. He loved hunting and working outside his home in Spencer.

The love of June’s life was his family. He didn’t miss a single dance recital, cheer competition, baseball, football, or softball game. We couldn’t have asked for a more loving father and grandfather. He will always be remembered by his sweet smile and loving spirit. The Lord could not have given us a more kindhearted man that influenced and taught us all how to love by example. Family and friends will miss him dearly.
He was preceded in death by a son, Rufus Alan Roberson; his father and mother, Rufus and Alma Roberson; 2 brothers, J. B. Roberson and Donald Roberson; and 2 brothers-in-law, G. W. Defee and Willard Acree.

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Elizabeth Roberson; children, Terry and Penny Roberson and Johnny and Belinda Roberson; 4 very special grandchildren, Jenni Anderson and husband, Mack, Mary Roberson, Kayla Hodge and husband, Justin, and Logan Roberson; 2 sisters, Peggy Defee and Becky Turner; 2 brothers, Bobby Roberson and wife, Helen, and Dewey Roberson and wife, Gaye; numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends, and a very special friend, “Rolo.”

Even though we mourn our loss, we rest in faith knowing that we will meet again someday.

We love you Granddaddy.

Pallbearers will be Logan Roberson, Mack Anderson, Justin Hodge, Harry Maroney, Cleve Gunter and Kenny Buffington. Honorary pallbearers will be Deacons of the First Baptist Church of Sterlington, Billy Williamson and Don Willard.

Jimmy Wess Bowen (08-29-2006)

Funeral services for Jimmy Wess Bowen, 68, of Bernice were held Monday, Aug. 28, 2006 at 10 a.m. at Pine Grove Baptist Church in Bernice. Officiating was Rev. Charles Headrick assisted by Rev. Mike Smith. Burial followed in the church cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Farmerville.

Mr. Bowen died Sat., Aug. 26, 2006 at his residence in Bernice.
He was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church, Chairman of the Deacons, and a member of the church choir. Mr. Bowen was also a member of the Bernice Volunteer Fire Dept and was recognized by Governor Mike Foster in 1999 for 33 years of service to the State of Louisiana . He is preceded in death by his parents, John Newton and Lida Bowen and sister, Monelle B. McCallum.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mary Prewitt Bowen of Bernice; daughter, Carole Witten and husband Kevin of Canton, Connecticut; son, Wess Bowen and wife Tina of Ruston; grandchildren, Reid Bowen, Taylor and Gavin Witten; brother, John C. Bowen and wife Charlotte of Bernice; special cousin, Roy H. Bledsoe and wife Pat of West Monroe and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Jay B. McCallum, Arthur McCallum, Brian Elkins, Daniel Elkins, Stan Elkins, William Ward, Chris Gray, Nathan Kelley, and Trey Parker. Honorary pallbearers will be the Pine Grove Baptist Church Deacons.

Memorials may be made to the Pine Grove Baptist Church Pavillion Fund or Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home.

Nell ‘Aunt Nell’ Nickila (08-29-2006)

Funeral Services for Nell “Aunt Nell” Nickila, 80, of Farmerville, LA, were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2006 at Rocky Branch Assembly of God Church in Rocky Branch. Officiating will be Rev. Lloyd Boudloche assisted by Rev. Randy Davis. interment will follow at 4PM at Popular Springs Cemetery near Hazelhurst, Mississippi, under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Farmerville, LA. Nell Passed away of a sudden illness Sunday August 27, 2006 in Monroe, LA.

Nell was a native of Jackson Mississippi, having lived the past ten years in the Rocky Branch community. She was an active member of the Rocky branch Assembly of God Church. She is preceded in death by her brother, Maxie Davis.

She is survived by her brother Joseph Davis of Hattiesburg, Miss; sister, Wanda Daniels of Farmerville, LA; 15 nieces and nephews; 38 grand nieces and nephews; 35 great grand nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were: Andy Davis, Buddy Davis, Troy Matthews, Tim Ramsey, Ron Tatum, Mike Davis and Ed Crawford. Honorary Pallbearer: Tony Davis. Memorials may be made to Rocky Branch Assembly of God Church.

Lenard T. Snell (09-06-2006)
Lenard T. Snell of Haile, was born on July 6, 1907. He went home to be with our Heavenly Father, August 29, 2006, a golden heart stopped beating; hard working hands are now at rest.

He dedicated his life to the Lord and to his family. Retired from Louisiana Gas Field, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and building boats.

He was preceded in death by his loving Wife: Estella Guinn Snell and sons: Tom, Jeff and Adolphus Snell.

Survivors include sons: Clifton Snell and Wife Tina of Haile, and Gary Snell and Linda of Redford, MI; Daughters: Yvonne Stripling of Haile; Della Mae Cook of Sterlington; Emily McCartney and husband John of Sterlington; Helen Cash and husband Kenneth of Marion; Betty Perot and husband George of Collinston; Ernestine Benson of Haile.

He celebrated life with God’s blessing of 52 Grandchildren, 99 Great Grandchildren and many Great-Great Grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 31, at Paron Baptist Church, Sterlington. with Bro Kurt Auger officiating. Grandsons will serve as Pallbearers. Burial will be at Liberty Cemetery at Linville.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice.

Norma Wilson Taylor (09-06-2006)
Funeral Services for Norma Wilson Taylor , 75, of Downsville, were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 2, 2006 at Downsville United Methodist Church.

Officiating was Rev. Edward Davis. interment followed at Mt. Nebo Cemetery in Downsville, under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Farmerville.

Mrs. Taylor was born on March 27, 1931 in Downsville, LA., to Wattie H. and Mattie Wilson. She died August 30, 2006 in Farmerville, LA after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Taylor was a member of the Downsville Methodist Church. Mrs. Taylor graduated from Downsville High School and Louisiana Tech University. Mrs. Taylor taught Home Economics for over thirty years at her beloved Downsville High School, retiring in 1996.

Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by her husband, Robert V. “Piddle” Taylor , parents Wattie H. and Mattie Wilson and sister Ila V. Lindsey. She is survived by her sons, Robert V. “Bobby” Taylor Jr. and wife Renee of Downsville, Keith Taylor and wife Lori Jo of Downsville, Stuart Taylor and wife Sonya of Calhoun. Daughters, Karen Taylor of Downsville, Lori Ann Taylor of Farmerville and Remona Barron and husband Scott of Spearsville.

Grandchildren Kristy Brazzel (Kenny), Andrea Mason (Zeb), Robert Taylor III, Josh Taylor , Nick Taylor , John Taylor , Julia Hancock (Dustin), Tiffany Johnson (Michael), Jennifer Adkins (Mark), Seth Barron, Beth Zachry (Erik), Dustin Crain (Brandi) and Brooke Taylor . Sister, Mona Faye Fordham of Jonesboro, LA., Eight great -grandchildren and three more to arrive in December, January and February. Special daughter Linda Laing of Rayville, and life long friends Betty Aswell and Jo Beth Bridges both of Downsville.
Numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends and former students that she truly loved.

Visitation was Friday, Sept. 1, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Farmerville.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to The Alzheimers Association, 2407 Ferrand Street, Monroe, LA. 71201 or The Downsville United Methodist Church.

Pallbearers were grandsons.

Mary Lillian Patterson Upshaw (09-08-2006)
Funeral services for Mary Lillian Patterson Upshaw will be held at the First Baptist Church in Farmerville, LA on Saturday, September 9, 2006 at 2:00 pm. The service will be under the direction of Farrar Funeral Home in Farmerville.

Officiating at her service will be Reverend Larry Ramsour, one of the former pastors of the church. interment will follow at the Liberty Hill Cemetery also in Farmerville. Visitation will be held at Farrar’s Funeral Home on Friday, September 8, 2006 from 5 until 8 pm. Pallbearers will be Andrew James, Steve Miller, Caleb Seney, Ray Beaman, Stan Wright and David Wright.

Ms. Upshaw was born on October 16, 1916 in Farmerville, LA and died on September 6, 2006. She was attending college in Natchitoches when her father died, so she chose to come home to help her mother rear her younger siblings who were still living at home. She later attended vocational school where she learned secretarial skills. She married Raymond Hardie Upshaw, who served as a Chief Petty Officer in World War II. The family moved to various states and spent two years in Africa. After her husband retired from the Navy, the family returned to Farmerville. During those years, she held various jobs. She will be best remembered by many for her work at the Union Parish Community Action Program. She and her coworkers made Easter baskets, some of which are still used today. She loved First Baptist Church, where she was an active member for many years. She held memberships in both the Martha Randolph Chapter of the Colonial Dames and the D’Arbonne Chapter of the Daughter’s of the American Revolution. She was very active in the AARP organization in Farmerville and won special recognition on more than one occasion for her dedicated work in their activities.

She was preceded in death by her father, John Patterson, and her mother, Josie Taylor Patterson, both of Farmerville; her husband Raymond Hardie Upshaw, to whom she was married for 55 years, and five of her siblings: Margurite, Arnold Gray, Alex, Dan, and Eugene Patterson.

Survivors include her brothers, John Patterson, Jr. and wife, Shirley of Pineville, Thomas Keith Patterson and wife, Sue of Gallatin, TN, Royce Lee Patterson and wife, Imogene of Farmerville and Richard Patterson and wife, Maylin of West Monroe. Her surviving sisters are Lula Mae Patterson Hague of San Antonio, TX and Louise Patterson Wright of Natchitoches. She is also survived by her daughters, Linda Upshaw James of Monroe and Beth Upshaw Beaman and husband Ray of Metairie, LA. She had five grandchildren, Ann James Miller and husband Steven of Thibodaux, Adrian James Seney and husband Caleb of Ruston, Andrew James and wife Ashley of Little Rock, AR, Sara Beaman of Metairie, and Anna Beaman Pheffer and husband Alex of Jackson ville, NC. There are four surviving great grandchildren, Timothy Royal Martinez, Emma Claire and Jack Michael Miller, and Audrey Grace Seney. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family would like to thank all who have expressed caring and concern for Ms. Upshaw during her prolonged illness. Special thanks to the incredible staff of The Oakes Nursing Home, especially Karen Jones, RN. Also, special thanks to Hospice Care of Monroe.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 North Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL 60601-7633.

Miriam Claudine Tyler (09-08-2006)

Funeral services for Miriam Claudine Tyler, 83, of Farmerville will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, 2006 at First Baptist Church of Farmerville with Bro. Roger Johnson officiating.
Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Calhoun. Arrangements are under the direction of Farrar Funeral Home of Farmerville.

Mrs. Tyler, a homemaker, was born Oct. 8, 1922 and Passed away Sept. 6, 2006. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Farmerville and of the Gleaners Sunday School class. She was a loving wife and a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ida Orr Honey; brother, John L. Honey; sister, Lucille Ratcliff and granddaughter, Debbie DeMarco.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Olan Dean Tyler; daughter, Maydra Pomeroy; son, Duran A. Johnston and wife, Linda; grandson, Allen Johnston and wife, Michelle; granddaughters: Sandy Pires and husband, Loree; Patricia Barnes and husband, Randy; Kelly Greenwood and husband, Bart and seven Great grandchildren; brother, Sherman Honey and wife, Joyce and a sister, Maudelle Curry.

Pallbearers will be B. J. Greenwood, Tad Curry, Ron Loveday, Greg Loveday, John Honey, Michael Honey.

Honorary pallbearers are: John Drue Taylor , Wes Jinks, Oliver Lenard, Ed Griffin, Shorty Aulds, Randy Barnes, Bart Greenwood and Allen Johnston.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Friday at Farrar Funeral Home in the chapel.

Zoa Booth Russell (09-10-2006)
Funeral Services for Zoa Booth Russell, 88, of Marion, will be held at 3 pm Sunday, September 10, 2006 at Kilpatrick Funeral Home, Farmerville. Officiating will be Rev. Donald Reeves. interment will follow at Liberty Cemetery in Linville, under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Farmerville.

Mrs. Russell was born on November 22, 1917 in Union Parish. She died September 9, 2006 in Monroe, LA.

Mrs. Russell was preceded in death by her husband, Leon Russell; sisters, Leola Pilgreen, Minnie Trout and Ozella Stokes.

She is survived by Children, Jerry Russell and wife Jamie, Winnie Miles and husband Bobby; 4 grandchildren; 7 great grand children and a sister Robbie Lee Russell.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Dean Baptist Church, or Liberty Cemetery Fund, C/O Bobby Reppond.

P. D. Roach (09-14-2006)
Funeral services for Mr. P. D. Roach, 88, of Bernice will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Mt. Patrick Baptist Church near Bernice. interment will be in the church cemetery under the direction of Farrar Funeral Home of Farmerville.

Mr. Roach, a retired carpenter, died Tuesday. He was a deacon and song leader of Mt. Patrick Baptist Church.

Preceding him in death are his wife of 57 years Inez Adkins Roach; daughter, Judy Roach Patterson; parents, Parvin and Lillian Roach and son-in-law, Dr. Paul Pennington.

Survivors include: One daughter: Dr. Virginia Pennington of Ruston; one Grandchild: Jennifer Joy Roach of Irving, Texas .

One Brother: A. B. Roach of Alexandria.

One nephew: Ronnie Blake Roach of Bernice.

One son-in-law: John L. Patterson of Bernice.

And a host of friends.

Pallbearers: Bobby Kelley, Jimmy Pilgreen, Jackie Green, Bobby Green, Frank Pennington and Darrell White .

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Jude’s or the LA. Baptist Children’s Home.

Ceclia M. Heil (09-20-2006)
Ceclia M. Heil, daughter of G.F. Wallace and Anna Mashaw Wallace of Farmerville, LA died of breast cancer on Tues., July 18, 2006. She was 75 years old. At the time of her death she was surrounded by her four children, many of her grandchildren and on great-grandchild. She died peacefully at home. She promised to look after us from Heaven.

Ceclia’s family remembers her as a loving mother and grandmother. Family was her first priority, and she was always there for us. She was a lifelong active member of the United Church of Christ of La Mesa, CA. In recent years she volunteered at Mission Trails Regional Park in San Diego, CA and the San Diego Air and Space Museum. She was also active for many years with Amigos de las Americas (an international youth community service organization serving Latin American).

She will be missed dearly. She is survived by her four children: Cathy Peterson, Lisa Heil, Marianne Vicencio, and David Heil; her former husband of thirty-two years, Henry Heil, Jr.; her sister Faye (Wallace) Monahan; fourteen grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

Artie L. Williams (09-20-2006)
Funeral Services for Artie L. Williams, age 85, were held at 2 p.m. Sun., Sept. 17. 2006 at the chapel of Golden Funeral Home with Rev. Roger Johnson and Rev. David Martin officiating. interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation was held Sat. evening from 5-9 p.m. at Golden Funeral Home.

Mr. Williams, a resident of Farmerville, formerly of Bastrop, Passed away Thurs., Sept. 14, 2006 at Timberlake Health Care in Farmerville. He was a member of Farmerville First Baptist Church. He was a retired pipefitter from International Paper Company. Mr. Williams was the former treasure of the International Paper Quarterly Century Club and on the Board of Directors with Kraftman Federal Credit Union. He also served as a reserve deputy with the Morehouse Parish Sheriff’s Office.

He is survived by his wife, Myra “Pete” Williams; two daughters, Nancy Grant and husband Ken of Madison, AL, Sandra Gray and husband Charles of Farmerville; son, Bobby Williams and wife Terry of Bastrop; sister, Mary Frances Wheeler and husband Joe of Crossett, AR; two brothers, Walter Williams and wife Rachel of Crossett, AR, Jimmie Williams and wife Jean of Jasper, TX; eight grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren.

Mr. Williams is preceded in death by his parents, Arter and Rosie Williams; two brothers, Robert Williams, Henry Williams; and two sisters, Lillie Jenkins and Inez Hildreth.
Serving as pallbearers will be Dale Rogers, Byron Rogers, David Deville, C.E. “Shorty” Aulds, and John Walker. Honorary pallbearers will be B.J. Pierce, Walter Wren, Peyton Spencer, and Dr. M. Stephen Beene.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home.

Donald L. “Donny” Kennedy (09-28-2006)
Funeral services for Donald L. “Donny” Kennedy, 66, of Marion, were held at 2 p.m. Sept. 28, at Conway Church of Christ, in Conway Community. Officiating will be Rev. Wayne Fussell, Terry Baze, Blackie Post and Jamie Orten.

interment will follow at Conway Cemetery, under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Farmerville.

Mr. Kennedy was a member of Conway Church of Christ he is preceded in death by his parents William P. “Toad” and Opal Kennedy.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years Marie Kennedy of Conway Community, children; James Kennedy and wife Mary of West Monroe, Pat Kennedy and wife Tammy of West Monroe, Mike Robinson of Conway Community and Wanda Brunson of Farmerville, sister Bonnie Brossett and husband Charles of Monroe, grandchildren Lauren Kennedy, Mary Kennedy, Johnathan Kennedy, Lauren Ogles, Jason Brunson and wife Jessica and his “little partner” grandson Lance Wilkins. Great-grandson Austin Brunson, special sister in law Patsy Hill, nephews John and Joey King.

Memorials may be made to Community Hospices of America.

Lorraine Crawford Hicks (09-29-2006)
Funeral services for Lorraine Crawford Hicks, age 83, will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Farmerville, Saturday, Sept. 30, at 12:30 p.m..

Officiating will be Fr. Adrian Fischer, OFM; and Fr. Nicholas Onyach, OFM, under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Farmerville. Internment will be at Liberty Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held Saturday morning, September 30, from 10 – 12 at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Farmerville.

Mrs. Hicks, a resident of Farmerville, formerly of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, Passed away Thursday, September 28 at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home in Monroe. Mrs. Hicks was a founder and life-long member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. She served on many committees in the church and assisted with CCD (religious education) classes. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister. Mrs. Hicks loved to cook and sew for her family providing them with a loving home environment for 60 plus years.

She is survived by six children, Carrol Ann Hicks Dunn; John R. Hicks and wife Val; Charlotte Hicks Rugg and husband Jerry; Tim Hicks and wife Kay; Angelia Hicks Bull and husband Eddie; Lee Hicks; twelve grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by husband, John Lee Hicks; parents, Henry Warren and Edwardine Ladnier Crawford; brother, Emile Crawford; sisters, Katherine Ryan, Yvonne Brune, Emily King; and son-in-law Wayne D. Dunn.

Pallbearers will be Joe Schick, Lester Davidson, Dickie Cole; nephews, Walter Ryan and Glen Ryan; grandson, Jared Rugg.
