Loving mother and grandmother

ST. MARTINVILLE - Services for Mrs. Raymond E. Scherz, 78, the former Chesley Beslin, will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Evangeline Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Austin Leger officiating. Interment will be in Our Lady of the Lake cemetery in Catahoula.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today with a 7 p.m. rosary at the funeral home, which will reopen Wednesday from 8 a.m. until the time of services.

A native of St. Martinville and a resident of Catahoula, Mrs. Scherz died at 3:05 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at a Lafayette hospital.

She is survived by two sons, Darryl Louviere of Aurora, Colo., and Raymond Scherz Jr. of Tallahassee, Fla.; three daughters, Mrs. Sammye Blischke of Wesley Chapel, Fla., Mrs. Raymie Cox of Louisville, Texas, and Mrs. Linda Welling of Chicago; one adopted brother, Harvard Karpe of Houston; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Scherz was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond E. Scherz; her parents, Gustave and Jeanne Chauvin Beslin; and one brother, Gus Beslin.

Pallbearers will be Steve Blischke, Kim and Dan Melancon, Tommy Romero, Chuck and David Laperouse, and Jim Cox.

Evangeline Funeral Home of St. Martinville is in charge of arrangements.

Mark Bonin Jr.

Loving son, brother and father

Memorial services for Mark Jesse Bonin Jr., 35, will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with the Rev. Mike Guidry officiating. Interment will be in the Holy Family cemetery.

A native of New Iberia and a resident of Jacksonville, Fla., for the past 10 years, Mr. Bonin died at 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Mr. Bonin was employed by Alarm Communications.

He is survived by his parents, Claudette and Lester Charpentier; his daughter, Lauren Elizabeth Bonin; two brothers, Norbert Bonin, and his wife, Amanda, of New Iberia, Errol Bonin, and his wife, Tacoma, of Jacksonville, Fla.; his stepbrother, Paul Charpentier, and his wife, Tiffany, and their children, Spencer and Sutton, all of Lodi, Calif.; his sister, Lori Bonin Boutte, and her husband, Raymond, of Jacksonville, Fla.; two nephews, Joshua Bonin of New Iberia, and Robert Bonin of Jacksonville, Fla.; two nieces, Wendy Boutte and Amanda Bonin, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; and numerous relatives and friends.

Mr. Bonin was preceded in death by his father, Mark Bonin Sr.

Theodore "Ted" Bonin

Beloved husband and father

Services for Theodore "Ted" Bonin, 91, will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday at David Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Roland Fontenot and Rev. Steve Horn officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park cemetery.

Visitation will be from 12:30-9 p.m. today at the funeral home, which will reopen Thursday from 8 a.m. until the time of services.

A native of Iberia Parish and a resident of Avery Island, Mr. Bonin died at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at Iberia Medical Center.

Mr. Bonin was retired from the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries, where he worked many years as a game warden. He worked for Avery Island Inc. and the Jungle Gardens at Avery Island. He also was a deputy sheriff on Avery Island.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Landry Bonin of Avery Island; his daughter, Beverly Trahan of New Iberia; two granddaughters, Sonya Dugas and Lynette Gary, both of New Iberia; one grandson, Marty Trahan of New Iberia; one nephew, Cleve Dugas of New Iberia; two sisters, Olive Spence of New Iberia, and Aline Viator of Delcambre; and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Bonin was preceded in death by his parents, Theodos and Elena LeBlanc Bonin; two brothers, Ramis and Willie Bonin; and his sister, Elise Bonin.

Pallbearers will be Raymond and Ty Bonin, Brent and Cleve Dugas, Al Gary and Marty Trahan.

Honorary pallbearers will be Melvin Duhon, Gilman Landry and Jerry Viator.

David Funeral Home of New Iberia is in charge of arrangements.

Debra H. Deslatte

Loving mother and daughter

CENTERVILLE - Memorial services for Debra Hebert Deslatte, 47, will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Landry officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of services Thursday with a 12:30 p.m. rosary at the church.

A native of Franklin and a resident of Centerville, Mrs. Deslatte died at 1:10 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, at Franklin Foundation Hospital.

She is survived by her mother, June Savoy Hebert of Franklin; her son, Jason Andrew Deslatte of Centerville; her daughter, Kaitlin Savoy Deslatte of Centerville; three sisters, Kathy Hebert and Kerie H. Guillotte , both of Franklin, and Ann H. Luke of Centerville; one grandson, Jaron Andrew Deslatte of Franklin; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Mrs. Deslatte was preceded in death by her father, Nolan Joseph Hebert.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the American Lung Association or to St. Jude Children's Hospital.

William Eckart Jr.

Broadway designer

DALLAS - Memorial services for William J. Eckart Jr., 79, were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at the Bob Hope Theater at Southern Methodist University.

A native of New Iberia, a former resident of New York City for 29 years, and a resident of Dallas for 26 years, Mr. Eckart died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, in Dallas.

Mr. Eckart was born in New Iberia and attended Southwestern Louisiana Institute, and Tulane and Yale Universities. He became a prominent Broadway designer. He, along with his wife, Jean, designed stage sets, costumes and lighting on Broadway. They frequently produced shows, including "Once Upon a Mattress," collaborating nine times with the legendary George Abbott. Their best-known shows included "Damn Yankees" and "Li'l Abner."

Mr. Eckart and his wife were nominated for Tony Awards for their work on the shows "Mame" and "Fiorello," and won the Donaldson Award for "The Golden Apple" in 1954.

He is survived by his son, Peter Eckart, and his wife, Veronica Masterson Eckart, and their daughter, Phoebe Jean Masterson Eckart, all of San Francisco; his daughter, Julie Eckart Johnson, and her husband, Todd Johnson, and their son, Travis Johnson, all of Dallas; his sister, Rosemary Eckart Bernard of New Iberia; two nieces, Priscilla Bernard Lampert of Williamsburg, Va., and Rebecca Bernard Gelatt of Covington; one nephew, Barney W. Bernard of New Iberia; three great nieces, three great nephews, four great-great-nieces and five great-great-nephews.

Mr. Eckart was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Levy Eckart; his parents, William J. Eckart Sr. and Annette Brown Eckart Dauterive; and his nephew, Arthur Martin Bernard III.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the William and Jean Eckart Design Scholarship Fund, Office of the Dean of the Meadows School of the Arts, Southern Methodist University, Dallas, TX 75275; or to Broadway Cares: Equity Fights Aids, 165 West 46th St. Suite 1300, New York, N.Y. 10036.

Clarence Fontenette Sr.

LOREAUVILLE - Memorial services for Clarence "Shing" Fontenette Sr., 74, will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church with the Rev. John V. Choorackunnel officiating.

A native of Loreauville and a resident of Oakland, Calif., for many years, Mr. Fontenette died at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at Summit Hospital in Oakland, Calif., following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Fontenette was an equipment operator and a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in World War II.

He is survived by his companion, Leona Broussard of Loreauville; three sons, Timothy and Clarence Fontenette Jr., both of Oakland, Calif., and Charles Fontenette of Washington D.C.; three daughters, Alicia Gattis and Leslie Dozier , both of Oakland, Calif., and Madelyn King of Japan; two brothers, Vincent and Antoine Fontenette Jr., both of Loreauville; two sisters, Irene F. Mitchell of Loreauville, and Theresa Gilbert of Oakland, Calif.; one special nephew, John Fontenette of Oakland, Calif.; one special niece, Cynthia Anthony of Kenner; 27 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mr. Fontenette was preceded in death by his wife, Mathilda Fontenette; his parents, Antoine Fontenette Sr. and Cora Edgar Fontenette; four sons, Michael, David and Damien Fontenette and Clarence Lee; one daughter, Katherine Fontenette; two brothers, Joseph and Lawrence Fontenette; and four sisters, Marguerite Hall, Vivian Jones, and Martha and Bertha Fontenette.

Isabel P. Norman

Services for Mrs. Francis Norman, 79, the former Isabel Bouton Price, will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church with the Rev. Steve LeBlanc officiating. Entombment will be in the Holy Family Mausoleum.

Visitation will be from 5-10 p.m. today with an 8 p.m. rosary at Evangeline Funeral Home, which will reopen Thursday from 8 a.m. until the time of services.

A native of Iberia Parish and a resident of New Iberia, Mrs. Norman died at 6:12 a.m. today, Feb. 2, 2000, at her residence.

Mrs. Norman was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church.

She is survived by her husband, Francis Joseph Norman of New Iberia; four sons, Espy Price Jr. of Houston, Earl "Danny" Price Sr. of Loreauville, Byron Price of Crowley, and Keith Price of New Iberia; two daughters, Patricia Price Moore of Carlyss, and Lynette Price Clement of New Iberia; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Norman was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Marie Legnon Bouton; her first husband, Espy Price Sr.; one sister and six brothers.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Catholic High Endowment Fund, the American Cancer Society or to Hospice of Acadiana.

Lionel "Bito" Johnson

NAPOLEONVILLE - Services for Lionel "Bito" Johnson, 28, will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Baptist Church with the Rev. David Gilton officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the church.

A native of Labadieville and a resident of Jeanerette, Mr. Johnson died at 9:46 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, in Jeanerette.

Pastor Shirley King

Loving, devoted wife and mother

JEANERETTE - Services for Pastor Shirley Ann King, 57, the former Shirley Ann Harding, will begin at 8 p.m. Friday at Mount Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Arthur Lee Alexander officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until the time of services Friday at the church, which will reopen Saturday at 8 a.m.

A native of Jeanerette and a resident of Houston for many years, Mrs. King died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at her residence following a brief illness.

Mrs. King was the pastor of Rock of Salvation Holiness Church. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother, and was an inspiration to all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband, Newton F. King of Houston; one son, Newton F. King Jr. of Houston; four daughters, Karen Anderson, Gail Toliver, and Raynell and Latonya King, all of Houston; two brothers, Louis and William Harding, both of Jeanerette; three sisters, Sadonia Belton of Beaumont, Texas, Sandral Nerve of New Iberia, and Carolyn Mitchell of Jeanerette; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mrs. King was preceded in death by her parents, Lionel and Hazel Harding; one son, Conrell Kiel Jr.; and two brothers, Wilbur Roy and Lionel Harding Jr.

Pallbearers will be Johnny Anderson, Faris Toliver, Barry Hensley, Charles and Jerric Nerve, Kevin Tauriac and Robert Hurst.

Honorary pallbearers will be Darien Kiel, Steven King, Derwin Wills, Johnny Anderson Jr., Richard Mack and Javon Lewis.

Laz J. Lopez

A native of Vermilion Parish and a resident of New Iberia, Mr. Lopez died at 1:05 a.m. today, Feb. 3, 2000, at his residence.

Mr. Lopez was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Enella Sonnier Lopez of New Iberia; two sons, Carrol J. and Steve John Lopez, both of New Iberia; two daughters, Mrs. Alvin (Betty) Romero and Mrs. Darryl (Barbara) Meyers, both of New Iberia; one brother, Wade Lopez of New Iberia; two sisters, Lillian Romero of New Iberia, and Nelta Franklin of Biloxi, Miss.; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Lopez was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Amelia Delahoussaye Lopez; one son, Donald Lopez; one brother, Ernest Lopez; and three sisters, May Duplaine, and Rita and Mildred Domingue.

Pallbearers will be Chad LeBlanc, Brett Williams, Tim Choate, Sam Kennedy Jr., Andie Bodin, Guy Wyatt, Larry Bodin and Todd Latiolais.

Charleston "Charlie" Estay

Founder and mayor of Charlieville, USA

MORGAN CITY - Services for Charleston "Charlie" Estay, 82, will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. Sabino Rebosura officiating. Interment will be in Morgan City cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. today with a 7:30 p.m. rosary at Twin City Funeral Home, which will reopen Tuesday at 8 a.m.

A native of Patterson and a resident of Morgan City, Mr. Estay died at 8:45 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at Lakewood Medical Center.

Mr. Estay was the founder and mayor of Charlieville, USA. He was a pioneer of the first offshore oil well on the coast of Louisiana in Morgan City. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, AARP and the Sea Bees.

He is survived by one son, Charles J. Estay Jr. of Franklin; seven daughters, Barbara Vining of Bayou Vista, Jessie "Linda" Reynaud of Morgan City, Mary Hasket of Dayton, Ohio, Charlotte Reeves of New Iberia, Charlene Estay of Morgan City, Cheryl Blakeman of Charlieville, and Denise Estay of Berwick; one brother, Roland Estay of Bayou L'ourse; four sisters, Yvonne Tullier of Metairie, Delores Diamond of Larose, Dianne Henderson of Spring, Texas, and Gail Freedman of Berwick; 27 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Estay was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Margaret Estay; four brothers, Wallace, Louis, Lloyd and Gilbert Estay Jr.; one sister, Shirley Collins; and his wife, Beulah Adams Estay.

BROUSSARD - Services for Thomas Henry Evans, 77, will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at David Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in St. Anne cemetery in Youngsville.

Visitation will be from 1:30-8 p.m. today at the funeral home, which will reopen Tuesday from 8 a.m. until the time of services.

A native of Birkenhead, England, and a resident of Lafayette, Mr. Evans died at 12:04 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette.
