Peter N. Whelton

Cape Coral Florida

Peter N. Whelton age 66, of Cape Coral Florida, husband of the late Linda Bendel-Whelton died early Saturday morning in Cape Coral, Florida following a long illness with cancer.

Born in Salem the son of the late Salem Police Department Lt, John Joseph and Emily V. (Norton) Whelton, he was raised and educated in Salem. Following his graduation from Salem High School, Mr. Whelton attended Boston College until serving in the United States Army. He was stationed in Berlin as a translator for three years until being discharged. He then received his Bachelor’s Degree at Salem State College and became a mathematics teacher at Essex Agricultural and Technical High School. After earning his tenure, Mr. Whelton became the Head of the Math Department for several years.

Later he served as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Massachusetts Federation of Teachers for many years. More recently Mr. Whelton was a Conciliator employed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts settling with the office of Industrial Accidents until his retirement May 31, 2003. In his retirement, Mr. Whelton had moved to Cape Coral, Florida. A former member of the Salem Willows Yacht Club, he was an avid sailor. Interested in Salem’s local politics, he was an active democrat participating in party politics and was also an avid bridge player.

Mr. Whelton is survived by two children Robin Whelton and her husband Andrew Grilz of Salem and Brendan Whelton of San Francisco, California; a brother David and his wife Georgia Whelton of Tyngsboro, Ma a nephew Nathaniel Whelton of New York City, NY and several cousins.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to funeral services Saturday February 5 at 10:30 A.M. in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., Salem. Visitation will be immediately before the funeral from 9:00 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. City of Salem Fire Marshall, Salem Fire Department Captain William R. “Bill” Hudson

City of Salem Fire Marshall, Salem Fire Department Captain William R. “Bill” Hudson, age 50, husband for 16 years of Elizabeth “Liz” (Cohen) Hudsonof Salem, died at home early Thursday morning.

Born in North Kingston, Rhode Island the son of the late Petty Officer, First Class Wesley Hudson, United States Navy, Retired and United States Army Sergeant First Class Eileen (Jeffers) (Hudson) Girard, United States Army, Retired, he was raised and educated in Salem. Following his education at Salem High School Captain Hudson entered the United States Navy, serving as a Radar Man in the Vietnam War. Following his discharge, he worked in construction until being appointed in 1980 to the Salem Fire Department by the late Chief James F. “Buddy” Brennan. Also a certified E.M.T, he received his Associates Degree in Fire Science at North Shore Community College. He was a former member of the Arson Squad in Salem. A member of Salem Firefighters Union Local 172 he had previously served on the Executive Board of the Salem Firefighters Union Local 172 and had served on the Contract Negotiating Committee.

An avid sportsman, Capt. Hudson enjoyed jogging and scuba diving. He had an insatiable quest for knowledge and enjoyed reading and learning especially about Science, History and Nature. A kind and generous person, he was always there to help others and at one time had sponsored children in need overseas.

In addition to his wife, Capt. Hudson is survived by two children Danielle Hudson and Tom Hudson both of Salem; his mother Sergeant First ClassEileen (Jeffers) (Hudson) Girard, United States Army, Retired and her husband Connie Girard of Merrimac, Ma and Bluffton, South Carolina; two sisters Cindy Hudson of Peabody and Barbara and her husband Tom Hubbard of Swampscott and a nephew Greg Hudson. He was predeceased by his twin brother, Thomas Hudson.

His Funeral will be held Tuesday at 10:00 A.M. in the Wesley United Methodist Church 8 North St Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visitation will be Mon in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St) Salem from 4 to 8 P.M. A Firefighter's Walk-By will be held at 7:00 P.M. Monday evening. William H. “Bill” Kagan

Boxford..

William H. “Bill” Kagan, age 88, husband for 51 years of Beatrice (Reed) Kagan of Boxford, died at home Wednesday following a brief illness.

Born in Boston the son of the late Louis and Sarah Kagan, he was raised and educated in Revere. Mr. Kagan was the Proprietor of Service Garage in Winthrop for over 40 years until his retirement in 1978. In his retirement, he continued working part time operating a mobile automotive repair business from home.

A loving husband and father, Mr. Kagan enjoyed teaching his son various life skills. This included both indoor and outdoor household projects to ice skating and snowmobiling in the winters and fishing in the summers. He appreciated experiencing life and nature along with all it has to offer.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Kagan is survived by a son Jason Kagan of Peabody; two sisters, Rose Michaelson of Canton, Ma. And Edith Eisenberg of North Miami, Florida and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother Philip Kagan.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend funeral services Saturday at 1:00 P.M. in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St) Salem. Armand E. “Shrimp” Michaud

Danvers..

Armand E. “Shrimp” Michaud, age 89, husband of the late Virginia (O’Brien) Michaud of Danvers, formerly of Salem, died unexpectedly in Beverly Hospital on Thursday morning. He was predeceased by his first wife Helen M. (Claffey) Michaud in 1983.

Born and raised in Salem the son of the late Joseph P. and Louise (Julien) Michaud , Mr. Michaud was educated in Salem Schools. After serving in the United States Army he became employed by Sylvania Lighting on Boston St, Salem and retired from Sylvania’s Loring Ave. Equipment Development Plant in 1978.

A member of the Sylvania Quarter Century Club, he was an avid golfer participating in many company golf events.

Mr. Michaud enjoyed traveling and taking his daily walks.

He is survived by two children Richard A. and his wife Susan Michaud of Ipswich and Robert C. and his wife Cheryl Michaud of Beverly; four grandchildren Michelle and her husband Tom Starr of Ipswich, Douglas and his wife Maria Michaud of Manchester by the Sea , Ma., Christopher and his wife Jessica Michaud of New Hampshire and Jamie and his wife Nicole Michaud of Salem; four great grandchildren Kyle and Tyler Starr of Ipswich, Hannah Michaud of Maine and Kylie Michaud of Salem; a step son Richard and his wife Holly Durkee and their children Melissa MacCormack and Steven Durkee all of Danvers; two sisters in law Cecile Michaud of Ashville, NC and Amelda Michaud of Hudson, NH and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sibling Theodore, Joseph, Paul “Tommy Lee”, Wilfred, Ludger and Leo Michaud and Louise Theriault.

His funeral will be held on Monday at 9:00 A.M. in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North ST) Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 6 P.M. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Professor Nicholas Xanthaky

Swampscott

Professor Nicholas Xanthaky age 94, husband of the late Alice (Karanikolas) Xanthaky of Swampscott, died peacefully Saturday evening in Salem Hospital.

Born and educated in Manchester, NH the son of the late Peter and Stavroula (Belitsakou) Xanthaky, he was a Graduate of Manchester Central High School where he was an outstanding athlete. He then received his AB degree from Dartmouth College in 1934 and began a teaching career in Manchester, NH..

During World War II, he served in the United States Air Force from 1943 until 1946. Following his discharge, he continued his lifelong quest for knowledge and received his MBA from Boston University School of Business Administration in 1947 where he also continued his education receiving extensive graduate credits throughout the years.

Professor Xanthaky then joined the Economics Department at Bates College for a year. He was named head of the Business Department at Whitman High in 1948 and head of the Business Department at Natick High School from 1949-1951.

In 1958 he began his 18 year career with Salem State College where he had been President of the Salem State Faculty Senate. Active in the community, he was a member and past President of the Salem Rotary Club, former President of Historic Salem, Inc., former President and Director of the Essex County Tourist Council, a member of The 13 , a Charter member of Alpha Omega, a member of the Board of Directors and former Treasurer of the Salem State College Foundation, a Trustee of the Hellenic College in Brookline and a member of St. Vasilios Church in Peabody.

Mr. Xanthaky had also served as Treasurer and Director of Gerodyne, Co., of America, Director of N.E. Health Services, Inc., Director of Laurentian Titanium Mines, LTD, and was the President and Treasurer of Xanthaky Enterprises operating amusements for years at Salem Willows.

He is survived by his nieces and nephews Cathy and her husband Doug Larson of Lynnfield, Sandra Delpero of Beverly and Peter Xanthaky of Salem and a sister in law Frances Xanthaky.

He was predeceased by a brother Louis Peter Xanthaky.

His funeral will be held on Wednesday at11:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by funeral Services at 12:00 Noon. in St. Vasilios Church,7Paleologos St., Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Tues from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem. Wilma “Willie” N. (Joy) Conwell

Wilma “Willie” N. (Joy) Conwell age 83, loving wife of Henry F. Conwell of Peabody, formerly of Salem died Monday morning in Beverly Hospital.

Born in Salem the daughter of the late Wilbur and Pearl (Goodspeed) Joy, Mrs. Conwell was educated in Salem Schools. She then became employed in the Housekeeping Department Salem Hospital until raising her family.

A wonderful mother, she was dedicated to and enjoyed being with her family. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting and was a passionate gardener.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Conwell is survived by four children Cynthia Conwell of Houston, TX., Ronald Conwell of Peabody, Robert Conwell of Lynn Brenda Halpern of Peabody and a son in law and devoted caretaker Howard Halpern of Salem.; a sister Helena Merill, six grandchildren Kendra Thomas of Houston, TX, Tia Hagan of East Kingston, NH, Ann Roberta Rathe of Lee, New Hampshire, Debbie Conwell of Ipswich, Michael Conwell of North Andover and Kelly Barrett of Peabody; 12 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother Wilbur Joy.

Her funeral has been rescheduled for Friday Dec 23, at 10:00 A.M. in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St. (cor of North ST) Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Thursday from 4 to 8 P.M. Burial will be private.

Stella (Dubiel) Simard

Salem

Stella (Dubiel) Simard, age 96, of Salem wife of the late Emile J. Simard, mother died Thursday morning in the Ledgewood Nursing Home, Beverly.

She was born in Salem the daughter of the late Michael and Bertha (Irzyk) Dubiel. Mrs. Simard was educated at both John the Baptist School and the Phillips Schools in Salem.

A member of the Quarter Century Club of G.T.E. Sylvania , she was employed for over 40 years at their Loring Avenue plant in Salem until retiring as a Quality Control Inspector in 1971. A longtime parishioner of St. James Church, she had been an active member of the St. James Socialites.

Mrs. Simard is survived by a son Ronald Simard of St. Petersburg, FL; two grandchildren Kerry-Lee Noel of Lowell and David Simard and his companion Donna Pope of Monroe, Michigan; one sister Matilda Nadeau of Beverly and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister Jane O’Connell.

Her funeral will be held on Thursday at 9:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 A.M. in St James Church, Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. Interment will be in St Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. Edmund H. “Ed” Parady

Groveland

Edmund H. “Ed” Parady, age 73, husband for 51 years of his childhood sweetheart, Elaine T. (Renshaw) Parady of Groveland, formerly of Salem died Monday, May 1 in Merrimack Valley Hospital, Haverhill.

Born in Old Town, Maine the son of the late Edmund and Gladys (Taylor) Parady, Mr. Parady was raised and educated in Bath Maine. At the age of 15 Mr. Parady met his wife to be when his wife’s family, the Renshaw’s had moved to Maine and became friendly with the Parady family. He attended Brunswick High School where he was a first baseman for the baseball team. A graduate of Brunswick High School Class of 1950 he was asked to play farm league semi pro baseball. Instead he became a building foreman for Barr Gleason and Bar in Brunswick, Maine Active in the community he became a Third Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus in Bath Maine. He joined the United States Army in 1952 serving in the Korean War for two years until his honorable discharge in 1954. Following his discharge, Mr. Parady returned to the construction industry and married his wife in January of 1955.

He then became a Building Superintendent initially employed by the Stamell Construction Company for many years and later by Columbia Construction Company until his retirement. One of the highlights of his career was working with his 3 sons in the construction business.

Mr. Parady enjoyed being home with his family and working on many carpentry and painting projects around his home. He is also well known for his rose gardens. He was a dedicated Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots Fan and will be remembered for his great sense of humor and ability to tell stories.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Parady is survived by four children Russell and his wife Carol Parady of Groveland, John and his wife Patty Parady of Salem, Rhonda and her husband Ron St.Pierre of Groveland and Robin and her husband Dan Pero of Chandler, Arizona; 10 grandchildren Laura, Kerri-Anne, Christopher, Jessica, Stephen, Courtney, Brian, Jonathan, Joshua, and Jennifer; six great grandchildren; his brothers and sisters in law Richard and Mary Renshaw of Rutland, MA, Jack and Shirley Renshaw of Peabody and Larry Tondreau of Brunswick, Maine and many nieces and nephews and close friends.

He was predeceased by a son Edmund R. “Rick” Parady and sister L. Bernadette Tondreau.

His funeral will be held on Saturday at 9:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St. (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 A.M. in St James Church, 161 Federal St., Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Friday from 4 to 8 P.M. in the Murphy Funeral Home. Internment will be private.
