Charles P. “Toothpick Charlie” Doherty

Boxford..

Charles P. “Toothpick Charlie” Doherty age 69 of Boxford, formerly of Salem, died unexpectedly early Wednesday morning in Beverly Hospital. The son of the late Charles P. and Rachel (Little) Doherty he was raised and educated in Salem. Mr. Doherty was a dedicated family man keeping family activities at the center of his life.

He is the devoted father of three children Kathleen Doherty of Boxford, Alana Doherty Gauthier of Amesbury and Charlie Doherty of Long Island, New York and the dedicated and loving “Papa” of two grandchildren Olivia Doherty and Sophia Gauthier both of Amesbury. Mr. Doherty is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was predeceased by a sister Patricia Batuyong.

His funeral will be held on Saturday at 8:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St, (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 9:00 A.M. in St. Thomas the Apostle Church on the Salem/Peabody Line. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M in the Murphy Funeral Home. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. Charles S. Markarian

Scotia, NY

Charles S. Markarian age 83, husband for 54 years of Anna (Kelly) Markarian of Scotia, NY died peacefully early Friday morning at the Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester, Ma.

Born in Salem, Ma. on Sept 14, 1922, Charlie was the son of the late Stephen and Virginia (Herdenrian) Markarian, he was educated in Salem Schools was graduated from Salem High School. While in high school he was employed part time by Ruggles-Klingman. Mr. Markarian then served the United States Army during World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations.

Following his discharge he returned to Salem and attended Bentley College in Boston where he studied accounting, graduating with his BA Degree at the top of his class. He had also attended Columbia University in New York City.

Charlie was an accountant with General Electric for over 30 years, first as a traveling auditor, living in New York City until moving to Holland, Michigan. He then moved to Schenectady, NY where he worked at the main G.E. plant for over 20 years until retiring in 1986. Charlie was an avid golfer, winning many tournaments and enjoying collecting golf clubs. Charlie was a past member of both the Edison Club and the Ballston Spa Country Club. He also loved swing and jazz music, WWII aircraft, and New England Patriots football. Charlie was a member of the G.E. ELFUN Society.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Markarian is survived by two children Bruce Stephen Markarian and his wife Liz O’Cain of Simi Valley, Ca and Susan Markarian-Poran and her husband Barton Poran of Malta, NY; a brother Willy Markarian of Peabody, a sister Irene DiPaolo of Peabody; three grandchildren Robert and Kristen Markarian of Simi Valley, Ca. and Harrison Poran of Malta, NY and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother Harry Markarian.

His funeral services will be held on Tues, July 11 at 12 Noon in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St) Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visitation will be immediately before the funeral Tues. from 10AM to 12 Noon. Internment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem. John L. Pietrini

Beverly

John L. Pietrini, age 77, husband for 49 years of Eleanor (Ogashian) Pietrini of Beverly died Tuesday evening following a long illness.

Mr. Pietrini was born and raised in Beverly the son of the late Domenick and Mary (Maglio) Pietrini. Following his education at St. Mary’s Elementary School and Briscoe High School, Mr. Pietrini followed in the footsteps of his father, a 50 years member of the B.A.C (Bricklayers and Allied Craftsman) Union. A 50 year member of the B.A.C Union, he was employed through the local unions in Lynn and Boston. Mr. Pietrini was involved in the construction of many buildings on the North Shore and was especially proud of his work at the Bates Elementary School in Salem and Beverly Hospital.

A veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Pietrini took time off from his career to serve the United States Army in Germany. Mr. Pietrini enjoyed spending time with his family, especially outdoors with his wife at Danvers Fish and Game Club and riding motorcycles.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Pietrini is survived by a daughter Tracy and her husband Vito Scarcella of Beverly and many nieces and nephews.

His funeral will be held on Saturday at 9:00. in the Immaculate Conception Church, Hawthorne Blvd, Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Friday from 4 to 8 P.M. in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St. (cor of North ST) Salem. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem. Anthony E. Dragoni Sr.

Scarborough, Maine

Anthony E. Dragoni Sr., 75, of 102 Fountain Way, Scarborough, Maine, died Friday morning, August 11, at home with his wife and family by his side.

Tony was born in East Boston on June 10, 1931, son of Nicholas and Angela (D’Ousilio) Dragoni. He attended parochial schools and was a communicant of the Church of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in East Boston. He graduated from Ipswich High School, and during his school days, worked as a mechanic in his father’s garage. He learned all his trade knowledge from his father.

He married Ann K. Rawson on October 29, 1952 at the Immaculate Conception in Salem, Massachusetts.

Tony enlisted in the United States Air Force on February 21, 1952, and was initially stationed at Sampson AFB in Cape Cod. From Sampson, he went to Otis AFB, Falmouth, Massachusetts, and later was stationed in Sioux City, Iowa. He worked in flight operations, and was very proud of his work. He achieved the rank of staff sergeant and was honorably discharged on February 20, 1960.

After discharge, he was employed Boley Motors, Salem, Massachusetts, and the DeSantis Garage, also in Salem. In 1968 he was hired by Ryder Truck Rental, working as a lead man in Boston. He was promoted to service manager in 1973, and moved with his family to Portland, Maine to help open and establish a new company location. He worked for Ryder for many years, leaving that company to work as a salesman for Hennessey, selling large truck repair parts and equipment. He retired in 1990.

Tony was a wealth of practical knowledge, and his friends and family often asked for his help and advice. He loved spending time with, and spoiling, his grandchildren.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Ann K. (Rawson) Dragoni; his son Anthony Dragoni Jr and his wife Cathy, of Scarborough, Maine; his daughter, Lisa Dragoni Oliver and her husband Robert Oliver of Summerville, South Carolina; ; A brother John Dragoni of Girardeau, Missouri; a sister Anna and her husband Lawrence Adams of Ipswich; four grandchildren, Nicholas and Elizabeth Dragoni of Scarborough, ME and Katie and Robert Oliver of Summerville, SC; and two beloved granddogs, Jack and Koda.

His funeral will be held on Wednesday, August 16, at 9:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North ST) Salem, MA to be followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 A.M in the Immaculate Conception Church, Hawthorne Blvd., Salem, MA. Josephine M. “Jo” “Josie” (Raneri) Campanella

Charlestown, Ma

Josephine M. “Jo” “Josie” (Raneri) Campanella age 82 of Charlestown, died Thursday evening surrounded by her family at her daughters home in Salem following a brief illness. She was predeceased by her husband Lawrence A. Campanella, January 22, 1977. Born and raised in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Josephine (Ruggeri) Raneri. Mrs. Campanella had lived in Boston all of her life until becoming ill recently. She had been employed in Boston for several years until her retirement and enjoyed her many co-workers and friends she had made over the years.

An outgoing person, she enjoyed people and is well known for her ability to make friends instantly whether it was out shopping or at a medical appointment. Mrs. Campanella is also known for her keen sense of humor and ability to have fun pulling pranks on her friends. She loved experiencing life, family gatherings, cooking and singing.

Mrs. Campanella is survived by a daughter Constance and her husband Ralph Conte, Sr. of Salem; two grandchildren Ralph and his wife Susan Conte of Somers, CT and Renee Conte of Salem; one great grandchild Jonathan Louis Conte of Somers, CT; a brother Joseph and his wife Rosa Raneri of Chelmsford; two sisters in law Tina Raneri of Roslindale and Ann Raneri of Plymouth and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters in law Leo Raneri, Paul and his wife Rose Raneri, Salvatore Raneri and Santa and a sister and brother in law Santa and her husband John Unni.

Her funeral will be held on Wednesday at 9:00 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North ST) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 A.M. in St. Francis De Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill St., Charlestown, Ma. City of Salem Board of Health Agent, Virginia E. “Ginny” Moustakis age 77 of Salem died Thursday afternoon in the Kaplan Family Hospice House following a brief illness.

Born in Salem the daughter of the late Christi and Mary “Sophie” (Pohas) Moustakis, Miss Moustakis was educated in Salem Schools. Following her graduation from Salem High School in the Class of 1947, she continued her education at the Salem Commercial School.

She then became employed by General Electric Company and later by E.G. & G in Salem. In 1972, Miss Moustakis became employed by City of Salem as a Board of Health Agent where she was employed for many years until her recent illness.

A member of the A.A.R.P Miss Moustakis was a member of the Peabody Essex Museum and the former the Essex Institute.

Her enjoyment in life was spending time with her family and friends at home in her yard, swimming pool and playing cards.

She is survived by a brother John and his wife Beverly Moustakis of Salem; two nephews Dennis Moustakis and his companion Dawn Mineo of Salem and Chris Moustakis of Salem; 2 step nieces Katelyn and her husband Scott Montgomery of Reston, VA and Kirsten and her husband Corey Marconi of Pelham, NH; 2 great nieces Elise and Lorin Moustakis of Salem and one step great nieces Chloe Marconi of Pelham, NH. and two step great nephews Evan Montgomery of Reston, VA and Nathan Marconi of Pelham, NH.

Her funeral will be held on Monday at 9:15 A.M from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by funeral services at 10:00 AM in St. Vasilios Church, 7 Paleologos St., Peabody. Marie L. (Carey) Manning

Salem

Marie L. (Carey) Manning died at her Oliver Street home on Sunday, December 10, at the age of ninety-five and a half years. She was the wife of the late John J. Manning, like herself a Salem native, who served the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for 46 years, many of them as Executive Secretary of the State Board of Retirement, and who died more than a quarter-century ago.

From childhood Marie was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception parish, where she was for decades a charter member of St. Mary's Convent Guild. She was also a member of the (Bishop Fenwick High School) St. Benedict's Guild.

After graduating from Salem Classical and High School in 1917, she was employed by the City of Salem and then served for many years as legal secretary in the Salem law firm of Hill, Blake, Berkal & Howie. She was active in the Salem Common Playground Association, an honorary member of Boys’Town, and to her death a member of the Retired State, County and Municipal Employees Association of Massachusetts.

Surviving Marie are her son John J. Manning Jr., of Storrs, Connecticut, a long-serving member of the University of Connecticut faculty, and her daughter Mary Ann Manning, Principal of the Collins Middle School in Salem. Her son Richard Carey Manning died in infancy.

She is also survived by a grandson, Sean Carey Manning of Chicago, Vice President, Charter One Bank, and his wife Mary; three granddaughters, Molly of Los Angeles, Kate of Boston and Laura of London; several nieces and nephews, including her godchild Nancy Grady O'Brine of Salem; and her sister-in-law Alice Manning Jewett, of Danvers.

Her father was the late John T. Carey, longtime City of Salem Blacksmith, and her mother the late Mary Ann (Doyle) Carey. She was also pre-deceased by her twin brother John Carey, and her sisters Ruth Carey Connors and Eleanor Carey Grady.

Her funeral will be held on Thursday at 9:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St. (cor of North ST) Salem to be followed by a a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 A.M. in the Immaculate Conception Church, Hawthorne Boulevard, Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully Invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Wednesday at the Murphy Funeral from 2PM to 4PM and 7PM to 9 PM. William Leonard “Bill” Ives

Salem

William Leonard “Bill” Ives age 77, beloved husband for 52 years of retired Salem school teacher, Marjorie (McIntosh) Ives of Salem, died unexpectedly in NSMC/Salem Hospital Thursday afternoon.

A ninth generation, lifelong resident of the City of Salem, Mr. Ives was born in Salem the son of the late Leonard Brown Ives and the late Ruth (Dawkins) Ives. He was educated at the Horace Mann elementary school and was graduated from Salem High School in the Class of 1947. He then received his Bachelors of Science degree in Floriculture from the University of Massachusetts in 1951. As a graduate student at the University of Massachusetts, Mr. Ives taught floriculture to freshman students and in 1954 received his Masters of Science degree from the University of Massachusetts.

Mr. Ives had owned and operated his family business, Ives Greenhouses, located at 256 Lafayette St., Salem for 44 years. He then was the Administrator of the Brookhouse Home for Aged Women in Salem for 10 years until his retirement.

An active member of the Salem community, he became a member of the Salem Rotary Club in 1958, where he had served as President from 1967-1968, was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow and has continued to remain active. He was also a member and past Master of the Starr King Lodge A.F. A.M. of Salem, the Salem Scottish Rite Bodies, the Massachusetts Consistory 32nd Degree of Boston, Secretary of the Salem Masonic Temple Association and Deputy Grand Marshall of the Lynn 8th Masonic District from 1992 to 1993. He was a Corporater of the Salem 5¢ Savings Bank for 40 years. A member of the Tabernacle Congregational Church, U.C.C of Salem, where he served as Clerk for 16 years and Moderator for 5 years.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Ives is survived by two sons David William Ives and his wife Pamela Burch of Marblehead and Richard McIntosh Ives and his wife Carol (Doyle) Ives of Lockport, IL; four grandchildren Graham and Spencer Ives of Marblehead and Jacob and Carley Ives of Lockport, IL; four nephews and one niece.

<> A memorial service will be held on Tuesday at 3:00 P.M. in the Tabernacle Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, 50 Washington St., Salem. John S. Cappuccio

John S. Cappuccio 81 of Salem, passed away suddenly at home of natural causes, Sunday March 11, 2007. He had spent the day with his wife Bertha, son Frank and daughter-in-law Lianne visiting relatives in the area.

He was a lifelong resident of the city of Salem, and graduated from the Bowditch School and Salem High School Class of 1944. While at Salem High he was a standout athlete in football and basketball, serving as captain his senior year. After graduation during World War II, he joined the US Navy serving the next two years with an honorable discharge in 1946. He celebrated his 18th birthday in Japan on the USS Baldwin (DD 624) the ship he served on. Upon returning from the service he entered Northeastern University and continued his athletic career in football and basketball, graduating in 1952. In 1968 he received a Masters Degree in Education from Salem State College.

Upon graduating from Northeastern University he began a long career for the city of Salem. He joined the police force full time in 1952, after serving on the reserve force during college, and worked as a patrol officer for 8 years. With the baby boom in full swing and a need for teachers, he began teaching Industrial Arts at the Bowditch School Flint Street. He later transferred to the Horace Mann, and finally the Collins Middle School before retiring in 1990 as a Physical Education teacher. He spent most of the 1960’s and early 70’s coaching basketball at Salem High School, and as a member of the IAABO officiating high school basketball games throughout the area.

Mr. Cappuccio, or Mr. C as he was known to many, owned several landmark businesses in Salem starting with Jay’s Ice Cream near the Beverly Bridge and the refreshment concession’s for the Salem High football games, as well as Lynch Park and West Beach in Beverly, during the 1950’’s and early 60’s. Later came Cappy’s at the Salem Willows in the 1960’s and 70’s, and finally Cappuccio Liquors, and Mill Hill Beverages during the 1980’s and 90’s.

He touched the lives of most people in Salem as student’s employee’s, and friends. He was well known around the city; over the past few years you could find him working at his daughter Linda’s popular Strega Restaurant & Lounge. He had many interests and was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, and the Christopher Columbus Society here in Salem, He volunteered for local political campaigns and attended many city meetings and functions, and was a member of Historic Salem Inc. He was an active state board member of the Massachusetts Package Store Association right up until his death. He could often be found working out at the Salem YMCA or digging quahogs on local beaches.

His large family including his beloved wife of 56 years Bertha, and their 6 children survive him. Jane and her husband Rich Stauffer, Frank and his wife Lianne (Jastremski) Cappuccio, and their daughters Stephanie and her fiancé Sean Lyons, and Kristen Cappuccio, Bob Cappuccio, Linda Cappuccio, all of Salem. Sue and her husband Frank Rullo, from Salem New Hampshire and their daughters Angela and Kim and Nancy and her husband Robert Duda of Beverly. His godchild David Cappuccio of North Plainfield New Jersey, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Francisco and Giovanna DeFrancesco Cappuccio, and his sisters Phyllis, Maria “May”, and his brother Joseph. Along with the cousins he grew up with on Pratt Street, John R., and Leo Cappuccio, and Shirlee Sararo Amerena.

His funeral will be held on Thursday at 9:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 A.M. in St. Anne Church, 290 Jefferson Ave., Salem. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the John Cappuccio Scholarship Fund, c/o his daughter Jane Cappuccio Stauffer, 28 Beckford St., Salem, Ma. 01970.
