TOWNSEND -- Eleanor (Avery) Walton, 87, of 66 Dudley Rd., formerly of 78 Beech Street, Belmont, died Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006, at the Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer. Eleanor was born in Watertown on April 20, 1918, the daughter of Abraham and Rachael (Wilkinson) Avery. She resided for many years in Belmont before moving to Townsend 10 years ago. She attended Belmont schools before continuing her education at the Banford Academy in Boston where she studied cosmetology.

Mario Vaz de Medeiros, 53
LEOMINSTER -- Mario Vaz de Medeiros, 53, of 64 Olde Tavern Rd., Leominster, died Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006, at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. He was born on Aug. 8, 1952, in Nordeste, Sao Miguel, Azores, son of the later Antonio and Aura (Branco) Vaz de Medeiros. He was the husband of Louisa (Moreira) Medeiros. Mr. Medeiros was a graduate of Boston University and was employed as a senior software developer for Fidelity Investments in Smithfield, R.I. Besides his wife, Mr. [cut off]

TOWNSEND -- Francis L. Gyles, Sr., 71, of 140 Lunenburg Road, West Townsend, died Jan. 31, 2006 at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston after an illness. Mr. Gyles was born Sept. 29, 1934 in Barnet, Vt., a son of the late Robert and Margaret (Whittier) Gyles and has resided in Townsend for over 40 years. Mr. Gyles worked for many years as a truck driver, and also operated a farm on his property. He was a member of the Teamster Union Local #170 and was a lifetime member of the NRA. Mr. [cut off]

AYER -- Grace “Elizabeth” (Bean) Goodrich, 94, of 53 Sandy Pond Road, a resident of Ayer for over 50 years, died Monday, Feb. 6, 2006 at the Genesis Westford House, Westford. She was the wife of Burton E. Goodrich Sr., who died in 1984. Goodrich is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Burton E. and Janet E. Goodrich Jr. of Rindge, N.H.; a daughter, Gail A. [cut off]

Gionet, Arlene E., 90
SHIRLEY -- Arlene Eleanor (Gardner) Gionet, 90, died at the Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer, on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006*. She was born in Claremont, N.H., on Oct. 1, 1915, daughter of the late Stuart and Addie (Allen) Gardner and was the wife of the late Henry J. Gionet who died in 1995. After moving from North Adams, she and her family lived in Ayer, where she attended school and was a graduate of Ayer High School, class of 1933.

Michael P. Shaughnessy, 54
TOWNSEND -- Michael P. “Bram, ” Shaughnessy, 54, of 3 Howard St., died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006, after a short, yet courageous battle with cancer. Born on March 21, 1951, in Clinton, he was the son of John J. and Barbara M. (Gannon) Shaughnessy. He lived in Townsend and Fitchburg for most of his life. Shaughnessy attended North Middlesex Regional High School and earned his GED from Mount Wachusett Community College.

Louis P. Racine, 77
LUNENBURG -- Louis P. Racine, 77, of 202 Whalom Rd., died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at his residence. Racine is survived by his wife of 56 years, Evelyn M. (Eastman) Racine; two sons, Wayne P. Racine, of Townsend, and Ricky Racine, of Fitchburg; two daughters, Susan Boggs Lightfoot and Mary Bennett, both of Townsend. He also leaves 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was the father of David Racine who died in September 1998. Racine was born in Fitchburg on Sept. [cut off]

Euthecia Gunn, 93
LEEDS, Mass. -- Euthecia “T” (Spencer) Gunn died Jan. 26, 2006, at Linda Manor in Leeds, Mass. Born on Nov. 16, 1913, in Barre, Vt., she was the daughter of Stephen Ralph and Jane (McLeod) Spencer. Predeceased by five siblings and her husband, James L. Gunn, T leaves three daughters, Euthecia Hancewicz, of Westhampton, Mass.; Deborah Weber, of Mashpee, Mass.; Priscilla Ryan, of Reading, Mass; a step-daughter, Constance Richardson, of Bristol, N.H.; and her sons-in-law.

Kathleen A. Dunlap, 52
THORNTON Mass. -- Kathleen A. Dunlap, 52, of Waterthorn Road, Thornton, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, after a five-month battle with esophageal cancer. She has been a resident of Thornton since 1988. Dunlap was born in Denver, Colo., on Sept. 4, 1953, the daughter of the late Val M. and Mary M. (Burns) Johnson. She attended Denver schools.

Roberts, 44
AYER -- Kenneth Roberts, 44, died Wednesday April 5, 2006, at his home in Ayer after an illness. Mr. Roberts was born in Dayton, Ohio, on March 1, 1962, son of George H. and Martha J. (Frommell) Roberts, and lived in Ayer since moving to the area in 1991. Mr. Roberts was the top-rated machinist at the Shanklin Corp. in Ayer. He also rode in the Northeast Rodeo Circuit in 1988.

Jeannotte, 57
SHIRLEY -- Ann Marie (Lorden) Jeannotte, 57, died Sunday, April 9, 2006, at her residence after a lengthy struggle with cancer. She was the wife of Roy L. Jeannotte, who died in November 2001. Mrs. Jeannotte was born in Fitchburg on September 14, 1948, daughter of Annabel (Broschart) Lorden and the late Richard Lorden and she resided in Shirley for over 35 years. In recent years she spent the winters at her home in the St. Petersburg, Florida, area.

SYOSSET, NEW YORK -- Edmund F. Jurga, 79, formerly of Shirley, died on Saturday, March 25, 2006, at the Rand Memorial Hospital, Freeport, Grand Bahama Island, from injuries received in an automobile accident the previous day. He was the husband of the late Mary Mildred (Ryan) Jurga, who died September 1, 1994. Mr. Jurga was born in Shirley on November 11, 1926, son of Ignatz and Marcella (Wasileuskas) Jurga and had resided in New York for over 50 years. Mr. [cut off]

AYER -- Regina L. (Ryan) Colburn, 58, died Thursday, March 30, 2006, at the Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer. She was the wife of Kenneth B. Colburn, Sr. Mrs. Colburn was born in Ayer on April 14, 1947, daughter of George W. and Flora M. (Montgomery) Ryan and was a 1964 graduate of Ayer High School. For 23 years Mrs. Colburn worked as a production manager for several companies including G.N. Netcom in Nashua, N.H., from which she retired in 2000. Mrs. [cut off]

(Elliott) Canada, 95, on Monday, April 3, 2006, from her home in Hampden took the hand of our Lord Jesus Christ who guided her safely to eternal peace and joy in that home He hath prepared. Born and raised in West Townsend, Mass., to the late Warren and Ethel F. (Hill) Elliott, she was a longtime resident of Springfield before moving to Hampden 17 years ago. Rose was predeceased by her first husband, Harold Starrett, in 1961 and her second husband, Leroy Canada, in 1994.

PEPPERELL -- Howard R. “Skip” Blood, 76, died March 25, 2006 at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. He was born in Nashua on April 9, 1929, son of the late William R. and Lillian R. (Lawrence) Blood and was the husband of the late Helen L. (Balog) Blood, who died in 1999. He was a lifelong resident of Pepperell, where he attended the schools.

TOWNSEND -- Robert Foster Hamilton, 87, a life-long resident of Townsend, died at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, James and Laura Hamilton, on Wednesday, June 6, 2007.

John F. Pelletier, 83
TOWNSEND -- John F. Pelletier, 83, died Thursday, June 14, 2007, surrounded by his family at his home after an 18-month struggle with cancer.

PITTSFIELD -- Zilpha "Sis" Thompson, 91, died Saturday, June 9, 2007, at Berkshire Medical Center. She had resided at Sugar Hill in Dalton for the past three years.

Louise B. Eckerson, 96
HAMPTON, Ga. -- Mrs. Louise B. Eckerson, 96, died on April 23, 2007 in Hampton, Ga. She was born in West Groton on April 8, 1911, and graduated from Groton High School.

Tharpe, 47
AYER -- Ronald E. Tharpe, 47, of Worcester but formerly of Ayer, died Friday, June 2, 2006, in UMass Hospital. He leaves his wife of 20 years, Lori J. (Jenkins) Tharpe; five sons, Abdullah Jenkins, Tishaun Jenkins, Kaamil Jenkins, Jaarmil Tharpe and Naadir Tharpe all of Worcester; his father, Julius Tharpe of Leominster; two brothers, Frazier Tharpe of Montclaire, N.J., and Julius Tharpe of Kissimmee, Fla.; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Smith, 53
WAREHAM -- William W. Smith, 53, of Wareham, formerly of Marion and Acton, passed away on Wednesday, May 31, 2006, at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston. Born in Newton on May 4, 1953, he was the son of Jean (Patterson) Smith of Concord and the late William V. Smith. He was raised and educated in Acton. Following high school, he began and maintained a career in the construction industry specializing as a landscaper and heavy equipment operator.

Burton, 79
GROTON -- Victor C. “Vic” Burton of Groton, a retired manager of Lone Star Industries, Inc., and chairman of the town of Groton’s Williams Barn Committee, died Tuesday, June 6, 2006, at Nashoba Valley Medical Center after a year-long battle with cancer. Born in Miami, Florida, Mr. Burton grew up in New Jersey, served in the U.S. Navy as an electronics technician, and graduated from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Penn., with an engineering degree in metallurgy.

Moseley, 66
HAVERHILL -- Stanley R. Moseley, 66, died June 5, 2006, at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston after a brief illness. He was born in Boston on May 18, 1940, son of the late Thomas E. and Lotta (Simpson) Moseley. He attended the Haverhill schools and was a veteran of the Vietnam war, receiving a Purple Heart. After his discharge from the Army he was employed as a truck driver for several years. He was also a member of St. Joseph’s Church in Pepperell.

Lagasse, 88
PEPPERELL -- Lauretta Lagasse, 88, of Pepperell, died Sunday, June 4, 2006, at her residence after a lengthy illness. She was born in Lowell on July 10, 1917, a daughter of the late Remi and Evelyn (Lacroix) Lagasse. Miss Lagasse was educated in the Lowell and Townsend school systems. She was employed as an inspector for Bemis Company in Pepperell for 49 years before retiring in 1979. Miss Lagasse was a member of the Bemis 20-Year Club and was a communicant of St. [cut off]

Marvin F. White, 78
AYER -- Marvin F. “Sarge” White Sr., 78, formerly of Shirley, died Sunday, May 28, 2006 at his home. White was born in Prospect, Va., on Feb. 23, 1928, one of five children born to Dorsey and Bessie (Wilson) White and has resided in this area for nearly 30 years. White served his country for 27 years in the U.S. Army, retiring in 1973 at the rank of Sergeant First Class. Following his retirement from the armed forces, White owned and operated M.F. [cut off]

James Jordan Spence, 80
PEPPERELL -- James Jordan Spence, 80, of Pepperell, died Thursday, May 25, 2006, at Nashoba Valley Medical Center, Ayer. Spence was born in Boston in 1926 and raised in Nahant. He served as a coxswain during World War II aboard the USS Bunker Hill (CV-17) from 1943 to 1947. Following his discharge he was employed by Kennedy Butter & Egg Co. He enjoyed 30 years with the George T. Johnson Co., in Burlington, Mass., before retiring in 1994.

Margarette E. Bon, 92
NASHUA -- Margarette E. (Long) Bon, formerly of New Ipswich, N.H., and Pepperell, Mass., died Sunday, May 21, 2006, at St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua at the age of 92. She was the wife of the late Primrus Bon, who died in 1999 after 50 years of marriage. Born in Pittsburgh, Penn., on November 17, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Lillian (Heaton) Long.

Swieca, 87
GROTON -- Theodore A. Swieca, 87, died Saturday, May 27, 2006, at the Nashoba Valley Medical Center, Ayer, after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Helen G. “Sis” Sherwin; two brothers-in-law, Winthrop Sherwin of West Groton and Wilbur Sherwin of Shirley. He also leaves several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late John W. Swieca, Frank J. Swieca and Joseph J. Swieca, all of West Groton and Edward W. Swieca of Shirley.

Curtis A. Maxant, 67
HARVARD -- Curtis A. “Camy” Maxant, 67, a person well-known to area residents, died Saturday, May 27, 2006, at the Wachusett Manor Nursing Home, Holden, as a result of injuries received on October 31, 2005, when, as a pedestrian, he was struck by an automobile. Maxant was born in Ayer on January 2, 1939, a son of the late William T. and Helen (Korpacy) Maxant and was a lifelong resident of Harvard.

Robert B. McGovern, 68
SPRINGFIELD -- Robert B. McGovern, 68, passed away June 26, 2006 at Baystate Medical Center. Born in Manchester, Conn., he was the son of the late H.P. “Mac” and Josephine (Pohorylo) McGovern. He was a graduate of Rockville (Conn.) High School and was a longtime resident of Ayer, Mass. Robert served in the U.S. Navy from 1957-1960. He was employed in the newspaper advertising field and later as a bookbinder for The Book Press in Brattleboro, Vt.

John F. Markham, 77
WASHINGTON -- John F. Markham, 66, a former resident of Ayer and a retired CIA officer, died Wednesday, May 24, 2006, in Washington, D.C. Mr. Markham, son of the late Joseph M. and Frances (King) Markham, was born in Ayer, Mass., on June 7, 1928. He attended local schools, graduated from Bates College, and received a Master of Arts degree from Clark University. He was an Army veteran of World War II and served in the CIA until his retirement in the early 1980s.

Jane Louise Luth, 69
GROTON -- Jane Louise Luth, 69, passed away at her home on June 30, 2006. She was born on August 3, 1936, in Providence, R.I., the daughter of Edward T. and Lucille A. (Kennedy) Ferguson of Newport, R.I. She was raised in Newport, where she was active with the Girl Scouts of America and the Trinity Church. She graduated from Rogers High School in 1955. She was a registered nurse and completed her training at New England Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in 1959.

John ‘Jack’ Hargraves, 71
BOURNE -- John “Jack” Metchear Hargraves, 71, of Bourne, Mass., and Edgewater, Fla., died at a family gathering on July 3, 2006, at the summer home of his brother in Biddeford, Maine. He was born June 23, 1935, in Winchester, Mass., second son of the late Gordon F. and Dorothy L. (Metchear) Hargraves. A sales engineer of industrial products for 40 years, he was most recently employed by Omni Services in Worcester.

Clara Mae Conover, 94
AYER -- Clara Mae Conover, 94, of Pepperell and formerly of Arizona City, Arizona, died peacefully, surrounded by her family, on June 28, 2006, at Nashoba Valley Medical Center after a brief illness. Clara was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, C. Kenneth Conover, in 1995; a grandson, Charles Dick; and a great-granddaughter, Terri Redman. Clara was born in Somerville, N.J., on March 15, 1912, to George H. and Clara L. Taylor.

Peter B. Conley, 67
PEPPERELL -- Peter B. Conley, 67, a lifelong resident of Pepperell, died Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at his home after a long illness. He was the husband of the late Gillian P. (O’Donnell) Conley, who died in 1991. Born in Pepperell on December 1, 1938, he was a son of the late Leo and Alice (Moody) Conley. Mr. Conley was educated in the Pepperell school system. Prior to his illness he worked as a plumber, belonging to Plumbers Union Local 12 in Boston for over 25 years.

Elizabeth Marion Turner, 101
HARVARD -- Elizabeth Turner died in her sleep at her home in Harvard June 26, 2006. She was more than 101 years old. Born in Dover, N.H., she attended Bates College for two years and was a graduate of the University of New Hampshire in 1927. Following her graduation with a bachelor’s degree, she taught at the Bromfield School in Harvard, which at that time was a private school serving as the high school in Harvard. She taught for two years before her marriage to Stanley Turner of Harvard.

Heidi Shultz, 48
SHIRLEY -- Heidi S. (Stecher) Shultz, 48, died at home on Monday, June 19, 2006, while surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Phillip J. “Jim” Shultz; two daughters, Erin B. Kuntz and her husband, Josh, of Ohio, and Kassandra C. Pinkerton and her husband, Greg, of Fitchburg; two sons, Travis W. Shultz and Nicholas J. “Nick” Shultz, both of Shirley; her father, Dr. William N. [cut off]

Virginia Shattuck, 53
WEST GROTON -- Virginia (Woolfrey) Shattuck, 53, died June 21, 2006, at her home after a lengthy illness. She was the wife of Chris Shattuck, to whom she was married for 27 years. Besides her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Julie, and her son, Jonathan. She was born in Ayer December 19, 1952, daughter of the late Ernest and Virginia (MacCormack) Woolfrey. As a child, she lived in Townsend and graduated from North Middlesex Regional High School.

Irvin Paul Robertson, 50
PEPPERELL -- Irvin Paul Robertson, 50, died at Tufts New England Medical Center in Boston on June 20, 2006. He was born in Concord on October 5, 1955, son of the late Irvin L. and Margaret (Forbes) Robertson. He spent his early life in Groton, where he attended the schools and later attended Nashoba Valley Technical High School. A long-time Pepperell resident, Mr. Robertson was a contractor in the concrete industry specializing in foundations and flooring and had been self-employed.

Philip “Mike” McPartlan, 50
WEST GROTON -- Mike McPartlan, a lifelong resident of West Groton, died unexpectedly at his home June 20, 2006. He was the loving husband of Kathleen (Anderson) with whom he recently celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary on June 10. Mr. McPartlan was born in Groton June 30, 1955, son of Theresa (Comeau) and the late Philip H. McPartlan. He was brother to Timothy J. of Shirley, and Jennifer B. of Pepperell.

Richard M. Harrison, 78
AYER -- Richard M. Harrison, 78, died Monday, June 26, 2006, at his home following an illness. Mr. Harrison was born in Springfield, Mass., on October 8, 1927, the son of the late Walter and Elizabeth (Callahan) Harrison and resided several years in Acton and North Andover before moving to Ayer in 1984. He leaves his wife, Betty L. (Griman) Harrison; two sons, Richard M. Harrison Jr. of West Hollywood, Calif., and Mark Harrison of Raymond, N.H.

Sheila A. Tilburg, 80
SHIRLEY -- Sheila A. (Morrison) Tilburg, 80, died peacefully at the home of her daughter and son-in law in Shirley on Friday, Aug. 25, 2006. She was born in Ayer on May 16, 1926, daughter of the late James A. and Anna A. (Rajla) Morrison. A life-long resident of Ayer where she attended the schools and was a graduate of Ayer High School, Class of 1944, she was also a parishioner of St. Mary’s Church.
