Phyllis Phalon, 83
LITTLETON -- Phyllis (Estes) Phalon, 83, of Littleton, died on Saturday, April 22, 2006, at Emerson Hospital in Concord.
Phalon was born in Beaver Harbor, New Brunswick, Canada, on May 5, 1922, the daughter of the late Wally and Amy (Hawkins) Estes. She grew up in various areas of New England and graduated from Nashua High School.
Phalon was married in 1941 and made her home in Nashua for two years, in Westford for 26 years, in Ayer for 15 years and in Littleton until the present. She worked as an assembler for Sweetheart Plastics for over 20 years. Phalon enjoyed very much the family camp she and her husband built in Stoddard, N.H.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Phalon of Littleton; a son, Robert J. Phalon of Lancaster; three daughters, Linda L. Kolios of Westford, Phyllis E. Castor of Ayer, and Amy A. Pedro of Ayer; a brother, Darrel Estes of California; a sister, Delores Hutchinson of Texas; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Badger Funeral Home, 347 King St., Littleton, on Tuesday, April 25, with a graveside service the following day at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Edward W. Tumber, 82
TOWNSEND -- Edward W. Tumber, 82, a former longtime resident of Main Street, died Monday, April 24, 2006, at the Genesis-Westford House in Westford.
He was the husband of Theresa A. (Dower) Tumber, who died November 23, 1987.
He is survived by four sons: Edward F. “Skip” Tumber of Clearwater, Florida; Wayne J. Tumber of Winchester; James R. Tumber of Townsend; and Gerald R. Tumber of Littleton; and a brother, Robert Tumber of Townsend. He also leaves six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mr. Tumber was born in Townsend on April 25, 1923, a son of Edward W. and Myrtle (Hobart) Tumber and resided most of his life in Townsend.
For many years he worked as a union plumber, and for fifteen years as a plumber at the former Fort Devens, retiring in 1985.
During WW II, Mr. Tumber served his country in the United States Navy. He also served 25 years as a captain in the Townsend Fire Department, where he was stationed at the West Townsend fire station.
A graveside service was held Friday morning at the Riverside cemetery in Townsend. There were no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701-9376.
T.J. Anderson & Son Funeral Home, 250 Main St., Townsend, assisted with the arrangements.

Robert J. McCarthy, 57
SHIRLEY -- Robert J. McCarthy, 57, of Shirley, formerly of Chelsea, died April 28.
He was the beloved husband of Patricia A. (George) McCarthy; loving father of Brianna L. McCarthy of Shirley; dear brother of Alice Hooper of Wilmington, Peter McCarthy of East Boston, Edward McCarthy of Nevada, Paul McCarthy of New Hampshire and the late Harold McCarthy. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
The funeral took place at the F. J. Higgins Funeral Home, 4236 Washington St., Roslindale, on Wednesday, May 3, followed by a funeral Mass in the Sacred Heart (lower) Church in Roslindale, then interment in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Diabetes Assoc., P.O. Box 1131, Fairfax, VA 22038-1131.

Allen, 70
PEPPERELL -- Edward J. Allen, 70, of Pepperell, died at Lowell General Hospital on Sunday, April 30, 2006.
He was born in Canton on April 28, 1936, son of George and Hazel Allen. He spent his early life in the Dorchester and Canton areas and had also lived in Natick. He had most recently resided in Pepperell.
Prior to his retirement he had been employed as a truck driver and later as a painter. He served with the Massachusetts National Guard and was a member of the AmVets Post 79 of Natick, serving in its Honor Guard.
An avid gardener, Allen also enjoyed fishing and any type of motor sports. He was very active in the Pepperell Senior Center and was featured in the “Men of Pepperell” calendar in the month of January. He was a member of the Friday morning Men’s Group and was a great fan of the Boston Red Sox.
He is survived by his children Patricia A. Allen of New Jersey, Mary Jane Bisbee of Pepperell, Edward J. Allen and Barbara L. Hartshom both of Mexico, Francis W. Allen of Florida, Michael G. Allen of New Mexico, Kevin M. Allen of Vermont; two step-children Robin and Byron Allen of Vermont; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial was held Thursday, May 4, at St. Joseph’s Church in Pepperell. Visiting hours were Wednesday, May 3, at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 37 Main St., Route 113, Pepperell.

Julia B. ‘Betty’ Sidmore, 84
GROTON -- Julia B. “Betty” Sidmore of Annandale, Va., 84, formerly of Groton, died Thursday, April 27, 2006.
Sidmore was born in Cranston, R.I. on September 18, 1921, daughter of the late David and Elsie (Kendrick) Bearse. She spent her early life in Millis but had most recently resided in Fairfax, Va., and Scotch Plains, N.J.
Sidmore had been employed at the Groton School for 15 years as a general office assistant and secretary. She was also a member of the Union Congregational Church in Groton, a past president of the Welcome Newcomers in Florida, a member of the Order of Easter Star, and a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader in Groton for many years.
She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Frank Merrill Sidmore of Fairfax, Va.; her daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Paul Briggs of Fairfax, Va.; her son and daughter-in-law David and Jeannie Sidmore of Manchester, N.H.; her three granddaughters Rebecca Hutchinson, Dustie Lessard and Jennifer Girdon; her grandson Jimmy Sidmore; and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her granddaughter, Debbie Sidmore.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 Michigan Ave., Fl 17, Chicago, IL 60601-7633.

McGuane, 83
AYER -- Catherine M. (Gallagher) McGuane, 83, an Ayer resident for over 50 years, died Thursday, April 27, 2006, at the Life Care Center of Nashoba Valley in Littleton, after a lengthy illness.
She was the wife of Paul K. McGuane, who died in 1976.
Mrs. McGuane is survived by a son, Paul K. McGuane of Ayer; three daughters: Margaret M. Kidder of Ayer, Martha A. McGuane of Lawrence, Eileen M. Allen of Tewksbury; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She also leaves several nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late George Gallagher, Margaret McArdle, Eileen Gallagher and Dorothy Gallagher, all of Lowell.
Mrs. McGuane was born in Lowell, November 23, 1922, a daughter of George and Margaret (Mulligan) Gallagher and grew up in Lowell. She graduated from Lowell High School, Lowell Commercial College and later from Lowell University.
For 17 years, Mrs. McGuane worked as the receptionist in the office of the superintendent at Ayer High School, retiring in 1994. She had also assisted her husband as the bookkeeper in his business, P. K. McGuane Plumbing and Heating in Ayer.
Mrs. McGuane was an active member of St. Mary’s Church in Ayer as well as its Catholic Daughters of America. She was a member of the Professional Women’s Club and the Democratic Town Committee. Mrs. McGuane also served as a volunteer at the Nashoba Community Hospital Auxiliary Gift Shop.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Monday, May 1, at St. Mary’s Church in Ayer, folloed by burial in the parish cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Church, 31 Shirley Street, Ayer, MA 01432.

Aili I. Lemay, 96
TOWNSEND -- Aili I. (Wonkka) Lemay, 96, died Wednesday, April 12, 2006, at The Highlands in Fitchburg after a lengthy illness.
She was the wife of Lloyd R. “Pete” Lemay, who died in May 1968.
Mrs. Lemay was born in Fitchburg on August 26, 1909, daughter of Albert and Sophia (Rudvig) Wonkka. She had resided in Townsend for nearly 60 years.
She was a graduate of Fitchburg High School, class of 1927, and attended Fitchburg Business School. She worked as a bookkeeper at the Fitchburg Municipal Employees Credit Union until her retirement in 1973. Prior to that she worked for C.A. Cross Wholesale Grocers in Fitchburg.
She was a communicant of St. John’s Church in Townsend and a member of the Townsend Senior Citizens and Golden Agers.
She is survived by three daughters: Joan L. McBride of Lunenburg; Carole A. Stone and her husband, Bob, of Barrington, N.H.; and Ruth E. Lemay and her husband, Bruce McSheehy, of Nelson, N.H. She also leaves eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was the sister of the late William Wonkka, Waino Wonkka, Eli Wonkka, Hilma Lamothe and Julia Solomon.
A memorial mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Friday, May 5, at St. John’s Church, 1 School Street, Townsend. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Townsend. There will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
The T.J. Anderson Funeral Home, 250 Main Street, Townsend, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Hotaling, 74
TOWNSEND -- Nancy L. (Jarvis) Hotaling, 74, died Sunday morning, April 23, 2006, at Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer after a sudden illness.
Mrs. Hotaling was born December 31, 1931, in Fitchburg, the daughter of Joseph and Nelma Jarvis. After spending her early childhood years in Leominster, she moved to Townsend where she lived on her family’s farm. She was a 1949 graduate of Spaulding Memorial School in Townsend.
For over 30 years, Mrs. Hotaling worked as the secretary to the vice president at New England Business Services in Groton and Townsend, retiring in 1993. Mrs. Hotaling enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing cards and traveling and went on an annual golfing trip with dear friends to Myrtle Beach, S.C. She was very active in the lives of her granddaughters and was often seen cheering from the stands at their sporting events and smiling proudly at award ceremonies. She was blessed to have a great-grandson who brought her much joy in her last year of life. Mrs. Hotaling attended the Townsend Congregational Church.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Robert D. Hotaling, a son and two daughters-in-law; Michael D. and Kyle N. Hotaling of Jaffrey, N.H., and Robin L. Hotaling of Manchester, Penn.; two brothers: Daniel Jarvis of San Antonio, Texas, and David Jarvis of McLean, Virginia; a sister, Patricia Long of Glenpool, Oklahoma; five granddaughters: Kristie L. Hotaling, Karissa L. Swenson and her husband Erik J. Swenson, Alyson K. Hotaling, Roxanne N. Hotaling and Natalie J. Hotaling. She leaves one great-grandson, Gavin M. Swenson. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her son, Stephen R. Hotaling, who died in March 2001 and her grandson, Brandon Hotaling.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 27, at the Townsend Congregational Church, Brookline Street followed by burial in the Hillside Cemetery.

Sarah Jane Gow, 100
PEPPERELL -- Sarah Jane (Cotton) Gow, 100, of Nashua, New Hampshire, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, April 13, 2006, in Westford.
Gow was born in Pepperell on March 19, 1906, the daughter of the late Henry Ward Beecher Cotton and Catherine (Fisher) Cotton.
Her husband, Frank Gow, predeceased her in 1947.
Gow was a graduate of Pepperell High School and Burdette Business College. She was an office manager at ITT in New York City where she resided for most of her life.
She is survived by her sister, Charlotte Fletcher of California; her brother, John H. Cotton of Pepperell; and many nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Mary Young of New Jersey, Florence Crowley, Mabel Archambault and Frances Cotter of Pepperell, and Helen Morse of New York.
A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, April 29, at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Resurrection in Nashua, N.H. Burial will follow immediately thereafter at Woodlawn cemetery in Pepperell. Relatives and friends are invited. There are no calling hours.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Marchand Funeral Home, Pleasant Street, Pepperell.

Fink, 56
GROTON -- Linda E. (Parmer) Fink of Sanford, Florida, passed away on April 5, 2006, following complications from a stroke. She was 56.
Born in Marion, Ohio, on August 31, 1949, Linda lived and raised her family at various times in Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Detroit. She most recently resided in Groton for 17 years before moving to Florida in 2005.
In addition to her paintings and many memories for friends and family, she leaves behind three sons: Andy, age 37; Zachary, age 26; and Jacob, age 24; and two grandchildren: Kaden, age seven and Shiloh, age five.
A memorial service will be held on April 29 at the Groton Middle School auditorium, followed by a reception at the Groton Grange. Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to the American Stroke Association or Humane Society in Linda’s memory.
