Norma Rose Stoll, 94, of Townsend
TOWNSEND -- Norma Rose (Farland) Stoll, 94, of 286 Main St., died suddenly Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010, during a visit with her daughter in Chico, Calif.
Her husband of 57 years, Robert J. Stoll, died in May 1996.
Mrs. Stoll was born in Claremont, N.H. on Dec. 26, 1915, a daughter of the late Omer B. and Victoria Ida (Labrecque) Farland, and has resided in Townsend for 53 years.
She is survived by her older sister, Arlene D. Burk of Southbury, Conn.; as well as a son, Mark E. Stoll of Gloucester; three daughters, Roberta J. Long of Winchendon, Debra L. Stoll of Townsend, and Victoria M. Stoll of Chico, Calif. Her grandchildren include: Laurie A. (Long) Orcutt, of Gardner, Tracy J. (Long) Weber of Swanzey, N.H., Michelle L. Long of Gardner, Michael B. Long of Gardner, Tristram S. Stoll of Townsend, Kristen L. (Stoll) Nesbit of Pepperell, and Julie A. (Stoll) Bailey of Ashby, as well as seven great-grandchildren.
Her son, James R. Stoll of Hollis, N.H. died unexpectedly in 1978. She was also predeceased by her sister, Reita Cabana of Leominster.
For many years Mrs. Stoll worked as artist and designer for Elsa Williams Needlecraft House, now known as Johnson Creative Arts in West Townsend. She was accomplished in many variations of needlepoint and offered instructional classes through the Elsa Williams Co. She leaves a legacy of the beautiful needlecraft artwork she has done for her children, as well as commissioned pieces.
Prior to that, when her children were of school age, she worked in the cafeterias at Spaulding Memorial School and North Middlesex Regional High School, both in Townsend.
She was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church in Townsend and had frequented the Townsend Senior Center. Mrs. Stoll left school at the age of 15 to work to help support her family. Determined to complete her education, she returned to her studies, and in 1977, at the age of 62, received her GED from North Middlesex Regional High School.
Norma was a dear friend to many, and she traveled extensively and spent much time visiting friends and relatives across the country, as well as taking trips to Puerto Rico and France. She was always ready with a helping hand and is remembered by friends and relatives for her joyful spirit, her kind and affectionate nature, and her easy laughter.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, at St. John's Church, 1 School St., Townsend. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery.

Ellen Louise Sheridan, 95, of Ayer
AYER -- Ellen Louise (Dinsmoor) Sheridan, 95, of Willard St., a former longtime resident of Walker Road, Shirley, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010 at the Apple Valley Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Ayer.
Mrs. Sheridan was born in Somerville, May 16, 1915, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Foley) Dinsmoor. She resided more than 30 years in Shirley before moving to Ayer six years ago.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary F. Blaisdell of Ayer; three grandchildren, Michael Blaisdell, Linda Taylor and William Blaisdell. She also leaves eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
She was predeceased by her granddaughter, Debbie Blaisdell on Oct. 8, 2010.
She worked at the former Sampson Ocean Systems in Shirley until her retirement in 1974. Prior to that she worked as a shoemaker for 25 years at Stride Rite Co. in Dorchester.
She was a member of St. Anthony's Church, Shirley. She enjoyed working with ceramics and working in her yard. She also enjoyed playing bingo and cards, especially poker and scat.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28 at St. Anthony's Church, 14 Phoenix St., Shirley.
Calling hours are 5-8 p.m. Monday at the T.J. Anderson & Son Funeral Home, 25 Fitchburg Road, (Route 2A) Ayer.

Newman DeCell, 64, of Lunenburg
LUNENBURG -- Newman E. "Bud" DeCell, 64, of Goodrich St. died Friday, Dec. 24, 2010 at Health Alliance, Leominster Hospital.
He was born in Proctor, Vt., July 13, 1946, one of nine children born to Newman S. and Effie L. (Bourn) DeCell. He resided in Shirley before moving to Lunenburg 15 years ago. He was a graduate of Rutland (Vt.) High School.
He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Elaine D. (Dori) DeCell; two sons and a daughter-in law, Lester C. and Mindy DeCell of Grand Dale, Ariz., Steven C. DeCell of Augusta, S.C.; a daughter and son-in-law, Monica DeCell-Fuschi and her husband Roberto of Huntsville, Ala.; a stepson, Brad King and his wife Giulia of Fitchburg; a stepdaughter, Deborah Kelly and her husband Mike of Dartmouth. He also leaves seven grandchildren.
His first wife, Sandra Lee (Fitzgerald) DeCell, died in 1995.
Bud served 27 years in the U. S. Army. He joined the Army when he was just 17 and his first tour of duty was in Korea. Bud served two tours of duty with the 196th Light Infantry Brigade in Vietnam. He was also stationed at Fort Benning, Ga., Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Md. and back to Fort Devens. Later in his career he became a warrant officer and was assigned to the 10th Special Forces at Fort Devens.
He retired as a chief warrant officer (CW4) in 1991. He was a proud member of the Trojan Horse Chapter 72 SFA of New England. During his time of service he was awarded many commendations and medals, including the German Armed Forces Parachutist Badge, Vietnam Cross Gallantry Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Service Stars and the Combat Infantry Badge.
He was a member and was serving as Commander of the Shirley American Legion Post No. 183. He also belonged to the Disabled American Veterans in Fitchburg and Veterans of Foreign Wars in Pepperell. He was a Mason and a member of the Peter M. Rasmussen Lodge No. 916 of Osthofen, Germany and also a member of the Alleppo Shrine also in Osthofen.
Duty, Honor, Country and Family meant the most to Bud and he lived his life with those as his chief priorities.
Mr. DeCell's family will receive family and friends from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the T.J. Anderson & Son Funeral Home, 25 Fitchburg Road, (Route 2A) Ayer. Please see www.andersonfuneral.com for additional information.
A prayer service and time of reflection will be offered at 7 p.m. Burial will be in the Massachusetts Veterans Cemetery, Winchendon with full military honors at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 30.

Anita M. Cosner, 76, of Ayer
AYER -- Anita M. (Martin) Cosner, 76, of Douglas Drive, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010 at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston after a lengthy illness.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Dennis V. Cosner; three daughters and two-sons-in-law, Shirley A. and Shawn Kraft of Ayer, Sharon and Nick Cavallaro and Sarah Rudolph, both of Bel Air, Md.; a brother and sister-in-law, William and Jacqueline Martin of Gardner; seven grandchildren, Michael, Ashley, Christopher, Jessica, John, Matthew and Lynn; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was born in Green River, New Brunswick, Canada on Jan. 27, 1934, one of 10 children born to Treffle' and Sophie (Dupere) Martin and has resided in Ayer for nearly 40 years. She and her family resided in many cities throughout the United States as they moved with her husband, who was in the United States Air Force.
For 16 years, Mrs. Cosner worked at the Randolph and Baldwin Co. in Ayer.
She was a member of St. Mary's Church in Ayer. She enjoyed roller-skating, ice skating, dancing and spending time with her family.

Thomas Fernacz Sr., 71, of Pepperell
Thomas (Tom) Nelson Fernacz Sr., 71, of Pepperell, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2010 surrounded by his loving family at Nashoba Medical Hospital in Ayer. He was born March 7, 1939 in Pittsburgh, Penn., son of Martha (Ries) Fernacz and the late Nicholas J. Fernacz. He was the beloved husband of the late Patricia (Haslett) Fernacz, who died in 2009.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving in the 57th Air Rescue squadron (MATS). He served our country for eight years. His first duty station was in Scotland.
He was a longtime employee of Digital Equipment Corporation. He worked as a computer Instructor before retiring in 1991.
He is survived by his children, David Fernacz and his wife Lisa, of Nashua; Michael Fernacz and his wife Deanna, of Shrewsbury; Marcy Belmore and her husband Danny, of Townsend; Cindy Bjork and her husband Donny, of Townsend; and Thomas Fernacz Jr. and his wife Sabrina, of Ashby; his grandchildren, Samantha, David, Taryn, Danielle, Shawn, Evan, Michael and Nicholas. He is also survived by his mother, Martha Pedder, and brothers, Darryl Fernacz, Jerald Fernacz and Richard Fernacz, all of Pittsburgh, Penn.
Visiting hours are Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Hamilton-McGaffigan Funeral Home, 37 Main St. (Route 113), Pepperell. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Funeral services will be private.

Allan A. Ludwig, 81, of Pepperell
PEPPERELL -- Allan A. Ludwig of Brookline Street, Pepperell, died March 27 at Emerson Hospital in Concord. He was born Oct. 26 1928, son of the late Albert and Fannie (Sawyer) Ludwig of Chelmsford. He was 81. He attended the Chelmsford School System and graduated from Atlantic Air Academy in Rye Beach, N.H. where he played in all major sports. Al also served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.
His entire career was spent in the construction business. He built homes in the Greater Lowell area and spent many years at San-Vel Concrete Corp. as a superintendent. Mr. Ludwig retired from Colonial Gas Co. while working in the Maintenance Department Office. He spent three years on the Chelmsford Planning Board, serving one year as chairman. He was also a member of the Chelmsford Fire Department, Box 7, a volunteer group.
Surviving him are his wife, Susanne (Powers) (Harris) Ludwig of Pepperell, a daughter, Cheryl Ludwig; a son, Glenn Ludwig; a nephew, Phillip Ludwig of Kennebunk, Maine, two stepdaughters, Ann-Louise Harris of Minn., Margaret Freeman of Gardner; two stepsons, Harold D. Harris of Nashua, N.H., and Michael Harris of Milford, N.H. and one grandchild, Megan Freeman. He was the brother of the late Robert S. Ludwig of Kennebunkport, Maine.
Visiting hours were held at the Badger Funeral Home, 45 School St., Groton on Thursday from 9-11 a.m. with a funeral service at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Lowell cemetery in Lowell.

Bryan M. Lee
Harvard - Bryan Lee, 34 of Harvard, died on July 12th after a valiant fight with cancer. He was born in Concord on January 31, 1973 son of Doug and Dee Lee of Harvard. He grew up in Harvard and was a graduate of The Fenn School of Concord in 1988, Philips Academy in Andover in 1991, and he received his BS in Engineering from Tufts University in 1995. He spent the last seven years living and working in Colorado and returned to Harvard recently to be near the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. While in Colorado Bryan achieved his life’s dream of opening a restaurant. He also enjoyed cooking, skiing and mountain biking while living in Colorado.
Besides his parents, Bryan is survived by his wife of 2 years Jill Lee of Harvard, a daughter Cassidy Lee of Harvard and a sister Jennifer Lee of California.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Congregational Church of Harvard on Saturday July 21 at 11 a.m.. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Bryan’s memory in his name to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney St., Boston, MA 02115. Badger Funeral Home, Littleton, is in charge of the arrangements.

Betty (Card) (Day) Shimmel
Betty (Card) (Day) Shimmel, 67 of Littleton died at Health Alliance Hospital in Leominster on June 28. She was born in Clinton on August 17, 1939 daughter of the late Lincoln and Cecilia ( Poulin) Card . Betty grew up in the Clinton –Lancaster area and attended St. John School of Clinton and Clinton High School. She married Craig L. day in 1957 and he died in 1973. She returned to school and received her training as a Medical Assistant from Montachusett Technical School and worked as a Medical Assistant for many places. Betty met and married Paul A. Shimmel and was married in 1984. They moved to Florida and made their home there until they returned to Massachusetts in 2004. She loved to sew and work in both her vegetable and flower gardens, and loved wildlife
Her survivors include her husband Paul A. Shimmel, of Littleton, 3 daughters Dorothy Higgins of Sterling, Nancy Day, of Barre and Patricia Amburgey of Ashburnham, 7 Stepchildren, Paula Ehwa, of Littleton, Paul Shimmel of Leominster, John Shimmel of Littleton, David Shimmel of Merrimack, NH, Diane Crory of Littleton, Donald Shimmel of Townsend and Gary Shimmel of Littleton. Her brothers and sisters Laura Kilcoyne of Clinton, Thomas Card of Williamsburg, MA, Ruth Cozard of Owatonna, MN, Kenneth Card of the Philippines, and the late Lincoln Card. She is also survived by 26 Grandchildren and 7 Great Grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held at the Badger Funeral Home, 347 King St. Littleton, on Monday at 11 a.m., Visiting Hours will be from 10-11 prior to the Service. Burial at Hillside cemetery in Sterling. In lie of flowers contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Assn. 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472.

Gerald R. “Gerry” Tumber
Gerald R. “Gerry” Tumber died unexpectedly at his home Saturday June 23. He was born in Leominster December 19, 1950 son of the late Edward W. and Theresa (Dower) Tumber . Mr. Tumber spent his early life in Townsend and was graduate of North Middlesex High School . Upon his graduation from High school he served with the United States Coast Guard during the Vietnam War.
Mr. Tumber had been employed as a meat cutter all his life he had been employed at Demoulas Super markets for the past 18 years previously being employed at Donelan’s Super markets and Triple A Markets.
A resident of Littleton for 28 years where he served as a call Fire Firefighter with the Littleton Fire Department he also was a former member of the Townsend Fire Department in his earlier years. A devoted family man he loved cooking for his family as well as fresh water fishing and was a devout Red Sox fan.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 28 years Elizabeth A. (Walsh) Tumber of Littleton 3 daughters Jill DiMeola and her husband Jay of Homestead Fl, Debra A. Cappucci of Pepperell and Karen Tully of Methuen and a son Paul J. Story of Littleton as well as a brother Edward F. “Skip” Tumber of Clearwater Fl. as well as 5 grandchildren.
Funeral Mass of Christian burial was held Sat June 30, 2007 at St. Anne’s Church King St. Littleton . Burial was at Westlawn cemetery Littleton .In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital 501 St. Jude’s Place Memphis Tn. 38105

Diggins, Dennis J.
Diggins, Dennis J., of Littleton, July 17, Brother of Diane and her husband Jack Walsh of Littleton, Uncle of Shauna and her husband Paul Tibbitt of Sharon and Meghan Walsh of Ashburnham and Great Uncle of Bear Tibbitt. A Memorial Mass will be held by the family at a later date. Badger Funeral Homes, Inc. Littleton in charge of arrangements.

Mabel (Bennett) Peters
Mabel (Bennett) Peters, 89, of 74 Willowdale Rd Groton, died at her residence on July 20. She was born in Lincoln, VT on April 1, 1918 daughter of the late Edward and Laurie (Miller) Bennett and was the wife of the late Leo Peters who died in 1989. She grew up in Lincoln Vermont on the family farm and was educated in the Lincoln School System. She was married in 1934 and moved to Groton in 1941. Mabel worked as a nurses aide at Ft. Devens Hospital and Fitchburg General Hospital, She later worked at George Frost Suspender Factory as a buckler, Hollingsworth and Vose in West Groton as a papercutter, and later at Sterilite in Townsend as an assembler. She enjoyed bingo, bowling, fishing, and hunting, She was also a member of St. James Church in West Groton.
Mrs. Peters is survived by 3 daughters Marie Grant and her companion George Forrence of Hudson, NH., Phyllis Peters of Groton, and Barbara and her husband Johnr Benson of W. Groton. 13 Grandchildren, 19 Great Grandchildren and 10 Great Great Grandchildren. She was also the mother of the late Douglas Peters and Jeanette Lloyd and was the sister of the late Albert, George, Clayton, John, Edward, and Walter Bennett and Marie Sayward
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Badger Funeral Home, 45 School Street, Groton, MA with Visiting Hours from 9-10 prior to the service. Burial at Groton Cemetery. For those who wish contributions may be made in her memory to St. James Church, West Groton.
