Vena Durham Henrickson
Died on January 6, 2008
LoVena Christine Randol was born June 23, 1903, in Ponca, a small town in eastern Nebraska. She was the 5th of O.G. and Emma Randol’s 8 children. She grew up on a farm, and attended high school in Wayne where she produced all the art work for the high school yearbook, the Spizzerinktum. She remembers the coming of Rural Electrification and what a difference it made for the farm families.
She attended college and became a kindergarten teacher. She took a job in Concordia, Kansas. She was engaged to a fellow Nebraskan, Clarence Henrickson, when she attended the annual teachers meetings and met Roy Durham. According to his sister, he returned home and announced that he had met the girl he was going to marry. He sent her flowers every week until she broke her engagement and agreed to marry him, which they did in 1927.
Vena always had artistic talent. She painted, and did calligraphy, and always made the loveliest flower arrangements. When they moved to Manhattan, Kansas, she began working in the retail jewelry business. One of her nieces said that “She was always the elegant aunt.” She lavished attention on her nieces and nephews with a continuous flow of letters, usually with dollar bills in them, as she was always generous with family, friends and those in need.
Vena and Roy moved to Emporia, Kansas. They attended the First Congregational Church, and she continued working in the jewelry business – first at Fort Jewel, then at Stanley Jewelry. Vena and Roy had their first and only child when she was 49 and he was 52. They endured a lot of jokes about being Grandma and Grandpa. A thoroughly modern mother, she returned to work a few years later, and juggled things the way today’s mothers do. Widowed at 63, she maintained a lively social life with her many friends.
When she was 69, she and Clarence Henrickson rediscovered each other and were finally married. They lived in Colorado, and then Arizona, for the next quarter century. When Clarence passed away in 1993, Vena joined her daughter Mary Durham and son-in-law Paul Emerson in Groton. In 2004 she was awarded the Boston Post Cane, recognizing Groton’s eldest resident. The final 3 years of her life were spent at Life Care Center of Nashoba Valley in Littleton, where her songs, rhymes and zest for life were well known. She passed away peacefully January 6, 2008.
