Charles R. Wilson
(November 22, 1919 - May 29, 2011)

BEDFORD - Charles Robertson Wilson, a resident of Carlton Willard in Bedford, Mass., passed away at home peacefully on May 29, 2011, surrounded by his family. He was the husband of the late Barbara M. Wilson. A former longtime resident of Lowell, MA, he was a winter resident of Naples, FL and summer resident of Drakes Island, ME, and Kennebunkport, ME.

Charlie was born in Lowell on November 21, 1919, the son of Frank Alexander Wilson and Christian (Robertson) Wilson. Stricken with polio at a young age in the great epidemic of the early 1920’s, he was bedridden for more than a year. Doctors gave him little chance of ever walking, but he defied the odds. He led a very active life that included skiing, boat building, rebuilding old cars, and working as a lobsterman on the North Shore summers.

From the late 1920’s through the 1940’s, Charlie’s family maintained a house on Bakers Island a few miles off the coast of Salem, MA. Summers spent on Bakers Island as a child learning to repair car and boat engines, and later as young adult lobster fishing for a living, helped him develop a sense of independence and self- confidence, as well as a love for boating, that lasted a lifetime.

Charlie attended Lowell public schools and graduated from Lowell High School. After LHS, he attended Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, NH, as a post-graduate student. He credited his KUA experience with providing him the confidence and educational foundation to matriculate at Union College in Schenectady, NY, where he graduated in the Class of 1943.

Ineligible for the armed services due to polio, he worked as a commercial fisherman and in defense plants during the war. After the war, he built himself a lobster fishing boat and continued to fish. Later, he entered the manufacturing field, working first for Hilton Egg Grading and, later, for General Electric. In 1949, he went to work for the Courier Citizen Company, a commercial printer with headquarters in Lowell. It didn’t take long for him to find his niche as a salesman for the Uniform Printing and Supply division at Courier Citizen. He excelled in Sales and was named Sales Manager. Later, he was named General Manager of the Uniform division and a Vice President of the Courier Citizen Company. In 1963, he was invited to join the Board of Directors at Courier Citizen and in 1972 he was elected to the first Board of Directors for the Courier Corporation when the firm converted to public ownership. He retired from Courier’s management team in 1980 and from its Board of Directors in 1990.

Charlie carried his childhood fascination with engines, cars and boats through his life, owning boats, fishing and rebuilding old cars until his later years. However, he was, first and foremost, a devoted husband and father of three children. He married Barbara Marden in 1948. He and Barbara opened their house on Clark Road to family and friends during the holidays and throughout the year. He was an attentive father and always present at his children’s school plays, recitals, athletic contests and other organized activities. He was affectionately known as “Uncle Charlie” by the children of his closest friends as well as his own nephews and nieces.

He also was active in a variety of community activities, working back stage to help produce the popular Paint and Powder theater productions of the 1950s and 60s, helping to boost his children’s sports teams and guiding Lowell teenagers who needed a helping hand towards opportunities in higher education. He served as President of the Vesper County Club, in Tyngsboro, from 1965 to 1967, and he was a founding member of the Arundel Yacht Club (Kennebunkport, ME). He held memberships at the Yorick Club (Lowell), The River Club (Kennebunkport) and the Bakers Island Association.

Charlie made lasting friendships easily. He was a charming conversationalist with a great sense of humor, and his family and friends were often regaled with stories that left them chuckling. In his retirement years, he and four of his Kennebunkport friends founded the OFF’s (Old Five Farts), a group that met once a week for lunch to discuss local news, to share the latest jokes heard on the street and to complain, bitterly, about the rising price of clam chowder. The group, which grew in number over time, met each Thursday for many years.

Charlie and his late wife are survived by his son Robert Marden Wilson and his wife Marion Abrams, of North Hatfield, MA, his son Frank Alexander (Alex) Wilson of Lowell, and his daughter, Dorothy (Dede) McQuillan and her husband Michael of Medfield, MA, four grandchildren (Dorothy Elizabeth, Charles Wilson, Ella Rose, and Abigail Marden McQuillan), and step-granddaughter Olivia Abrams. He was the brother of the late John F. Wilson, the late Robert A. Wilson, and the late Barbara Wilson Bowman. In lieu of sending flowers, friends may send a donation in his memory to Kimball Union Academy, Meriden, NH 03770 (www.KUA.org) or the Laudholm Trust (for the protection of coastal environments), PO Box 1007 Wells, ME 04090 (www.wellsreserve.org).

Calling hours will be held, 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Monday, June 6, at Blake Funeral Home, 24 Worthen Street, Chelmsford, MA 01824. A family burial ceremony will be conducted at the Lowell cemetery on Tuesday morning, June 7. Friends are invited to a memorial service to celebrate the life of Charlie Wilson, at Christ Church United, 180 East Merrimack Street, Lowell, MA 01852 at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, June 7.
