Raymond Hoke, 47

Avid sports fan

LYNN - Raymond Hoke, age 47, of Lynn, passed away Saturday August 8, 2009. He was the husband of the late Laurie Zupan-Hoke. Born and raised in Lynn, he was the son of the late Joseph Muise and Marion J. (Vitale) Hoke. Ray was employed Whytes Laundry and later for many years with Lynn Plastics until their closing.

He was an avid sports fan. He is survived by his children Alexandra and Allison Hoke, two brothers, Paul Hoke and Donald R. Swift Jr., both of Lynn, and many friends.

He was the brother of the late Joseph Jo-Jo Swift and uncle of the late Joshua Hoke. Service Information: A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Valerie Sbriglia, 50

Active cancer research advocate

DANVERS - Valerie (Lamphier) Sbriglia, 50, passed away August 11, 2009, surrounded by the people that loved her after a six year battle against ovarian cancer which she fought with hope, spirit and courage.

Valerie was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, daughter of the late George and Bertha (McCaul) Lamphier. A 1977 graduate of Lynn Classical High School, she moved to Florida where she met her husband Matthew. They returned to Massachusetts in 1990 with their son Shaun.

She was a thoughtful, creative, unique individual that always used her imaginative talents to the delight of others. Her childlike spirit kept those around her in awe of her ability to make the simplest things so special. She was active in many fundraising projects for cancer research. Her tireless efforts produced so many cherished gifts for others. In her son's youth she was active with Danvers hockey and little league.

She was employed by the U.S. Post Office for over 24 years in Ft Lauderdale, Florida and Peabody, Massachusetts. Valerie founded the multi-post office Christmas Toy Drive that has supplied thousands of gifts to children on the North Shore. So many delighted in the displays she created in the Peabody post office lobby. She was the recipient of the Citizen of the Year Award in Peabody for her work in the community.

She is survived by her husband of 26 years, Matthew, her only son Shaun and her older sister Cecile Belloise of Revere, her aunt and uncle Dorothy and Arthur Pass of Nahant and several nieces and nephews. Service Information: Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, August 14, 2009 at 9 a.m. in Saint Richard Church, 90 Forest St., Danvers. Burial will follow in Annunciation Cemetery, Danvers. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours are Thursday from 4-8 p.m. in C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers Square. Donations in Valeries memory may be made to the Natl. SYMMES, DAVID T.

David T. Symmes, 63, died Saturday afternoon, May 31, 2008, at Beverly Hospital after suffering a heart attack in Danvers Square. He was the loving husband of Sally (Tomlinson) Symmes, with whom he shared 45 years of marriage.

Born in Salem on May 13, 1945, he was the son of Thayne and Karin (Hurd) Symmes of Essex. He was raised and educated in Danvers and was a graduate of Danvers High School, Class of 1963. He went on to further his education at Northeastern University and graduated in 1968.

For forty years, David had been employed by Hewlitt-Packard (formerly Digital Equipment and Compaq) where he was first hired in 1968.

A longtime Danvers resident, David was active in the Danvers Historical Society for many years. A member of Calvary Episcopal Church, he was recently elected Senior Warden. He was especially fond of his constant companions, Molly and Seamus, his Kerry Blue Terriers.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by three children and their spouses: Melissa and Greg West of Boxford, Rebecca and Kenneth Lee of Danvers, and Matthew and Nina Symmes of No. Providence, RI; six grandchildren: Michael and Margaret Devlin of Boxford, Caroline and Charlotte Lee of Danvers, and David and Nicholas Symmes of No. Providence, RI; two sisters: Susan Emerson of Webster, NH and Linda Monagle of Essex; two brothers: Bruce Symmes of Danvers and Keith Symmes of Essex; and many nieces and nephews.

His Funeral Service will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10AM in Calvary Episcopal Church, corner of Cherry & Holten Sts., Danvers. Burial will follow in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours are Tuesday from 4-8PM at C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers Square. In lieu of flowers, donations in Davids name may be made to the Calvary Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, PO Box 393, Danvers, MA 01923 or the North Shore Medical Center Cancer Center, 17 Centennial Dr., Peabody, MA 01960.

SCHEVIS, KELLEY

Kelley J. Schevis, 85, of Danvers, MA died at home June 1, 2008 surrounded by family. He was born in Danvers, on May 10, 1923, the son of the late John and Sophia (Jasewick) Schevis. He was the beloved husband of Patricia (Morphew) Schevis for 55 years. Kelley was a graduate of Holten High School and lived in Danvers all his life. He played baseball in the Danvers twilight league and football in the Danvers town semi-pro league.

During WWII Kelley served as a Marine Corporal in the Pacific Theatre. He was wounded in Iwo Jima and awarded the Purple Heart. He was a lifetime member of the DAV and a member of the Danvers VFW Post 2359. Kelley was employed with the Beverly Post Office for 30 years. His hobbies included gardening, puzzles, helping his children and friends, and he was a lifelong Red Sox fan.

He is survived by his wife Patricia (Morphew), son & daughter-in-law, Kelley Jr. and Julie Schevis of Danvers, MA and daughter and son-in-law, Elaine C. and Allen E. LeBoeuf of Windham, NH, four grandchildren, Cheryl LeBoeuf of Providence, RI, Cynthia LeBoeuf of Plaistow, NH, Ryan Schevis of Danvers, MA, and Danielle Schevis of Haverhill, MA, three step grandsons, Michael, Daniel and Timothy Stanton of Danvers, MA, one great grandchild, Myles OKeefe, and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Stephen, John, Daniel and Isabel Schevis, Michael Shairs, and Ester Karson.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, June 5, 2008 at Annunciation Cemetery, Hobart Street, Danvers at 11:00am. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Hospice of the North Shore, 10 Elm Street, Danvers, MA 01923. Arrangements are by C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers Square.

BROTHER DISMAS, CFX

Brother Dismas, C.F.X. (Robert E. McAuliffe), a member of the Congregation of the Xaverian Brothers for sixty-six years, died after a long illness on June 2 at age eighty-five at Xaverian House, the Xaverian Brothers retirement facility on the property of St. Johns Prep in Danvers.

The son of the late John McAuliffe and Mary Teresa Walsh, Robert McAuliffe was born in Brooklyn, NY, on June 5, 1922. After attending St. Michaels Diocesan High School which was conducted by the Brothers and St. Johns University, both in Brooklyn, he entered the congregation in 1942 and received the religious name Dismas.

His classroom teaching apostolate would take him to St. Xavier High School in Louisville, KY; Mt. St. Joseph High School in Baltimore and Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Wheaton, MD; and St. Joseph Juniorate in Peabody and Keith Academy in Lowell, MA. Along the way he would earn his MA degree in English from Boston College and both a Bachelor of and Licentiate in Sacred Science (Theology) at the Jesus Magister University in Rome. Brother Dismas also served the Congregation in various administrative posts: Assistant Novice and Assistant Scholastic Master at Sacred Heart Novitiate and Xaverian College respectively, Vocation Director, and Personnel and Retirement Director. From 1982 until 2002 he worked in Sarasota, FL, as the Volunteer Director for the Senior Friendship Center and as a tireless volunteer himself, serving the needs of the elderly in that area.

Brother Dismas joined the Brothers retirement community in Louisville, KY, in 2002; when that facility was renovated in 2004, he came north to Xaverian House in Danvers where he remained until his death.

An intensely spiritual and thoughtful man, he exuded charm and fraternal charity and was a favorite with his students as well as his many nieces and nephews and grand- nieces and grandnephews. Brother Dismas was preceded in death by his brothers William, John, and Francis.

Visiting hours will be on Monday, June 9, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the St. Johns Preparatory School Chapel (Administration Building). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Prep Chapel on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. Burial will follow in the Xaverian Brothers Cemetery. Arrangements will be under the direction of C.R. Lyons and Sons Funeral Directors, Danvers. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Brothers memory may be made to the Xaverian Brothers Retirement Fund at Xaverian Brothers, 4409 Frederick Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21229.

DELUCA, ANNA

Anna M. (Parrotti) DeLuca, 92, died Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at a local nursing facility following a lengthy illness. She was the wife of the late Domenic DeLuca Sr.

Born in Salem on Apr. 11, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Salvatore and Santa (Teranos) DeLuca. She was raised and educated in Salem and been a Danvers resident for over seventy years.

For many years, Mrs. DeLuca was employed at the kitchens at the former Danvers State Hospital. A communicant of St. Richard Church, she enjoyed playing bingo.

She is survived by five children and their spouses: Mary and Peter Pierce of Tampa, FL, Ralph and Patricia DeLuca of Danvers, Paul and Nancy DeLuca of Salem, Samuel and Peggy DeLuca of Peabody, and Domenic and Kathleen DeLuca of Danvers; 14 grandchildren; several great and great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday at 10AM in St. Richard Church, 90 Forest St., Danvers. Burial will follow in Annunciation Cemetery, Danvers. Relatives and friends are invited. As requested, there are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Care Alternatives, 181 Cedar Hill St., Marlboro, MA 01752. Arrangements are by C.R. McCARTHY, ELIZABETH J.

Elizabeth J. (Lombard) McCarthy, 86, died Thursday afternoon following a lengthy illness. She was the wife of the late James F. McCarthy, with whom she shared over 61 years of marriage.

Born in Salem on October 15, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Guy and Delia (Hurley) Lombard. She was raised and educated in Salem and Peabody and was a graduate of Peabody High School. Mrs. McCarthy resided in Danvers for over forty years, and in recent years had made her home with her daughter in Virginia.

A homemaker, Mrs. McCarthy was a loving wife and mother. She had been a member of the Salem Country Club since 1946 and was a longtime parishioner of St. Thomas the Apostle Church.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and James Kirk of Leesburg, VA, and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Kenneth Lombard, Walter Lombard, and Dorothy Thorpe.

Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 10AM in St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Margin St., Peabody. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, Salem. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours are Tuesday from 6-8PM at C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers Square. Donations in her memory may be made to Capital Hospice, 209 Gibson St. NW, Leesburg, VA 20176.

COPELLO, FRANCIS

Francis William Copello, 88, died Wednesday morning in his home following a lengthy illness. He was the loving husband of Josephine T. (Lentini) Copello, with whom he shared sixty years of marriage.

Born in Chelsea on Sept. 17, 1917, he was the son of the late Joseph and Annie (OConnor) Copello. He was raised and educated in Chelsea, where he resided until moving to Danvers 10 years ago.

Mr. Copello was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps. He was decorated for his service at Guadalcanal in the Pacific Theater.

He was employed as laundry manager at the Soldiers Home in Chelsea until the time of his retirement.

An avid reader, he enjoyed spending time at his summer home in Alton Bay. He was a member of VFW Post 2346 in Saugus, the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, and the First Marine Division Association.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, William and Sharon Copello of Danvers; 2 brothers: John Copello and Ernest Copello; 2 sisters: Margaret Favreau and Eileen Favreau; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by many brothers and sisters.

His Funeral Service will be Saturday at 10:30AM in C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers Square. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours are Friday from 4-8PM in the funeral home.

BEARD, CATHERINE M.

Catherine M. (Zollo) Beard, 84, died late Friday evening at a local nursing facility. She was the wife of the late E. Eugene Beard, who died in 1994.

Born in Salem on July 25, 1921, she was the daughter of the late John and Helen (Flynn) Zollo. She was raised and educated in Danvers and was a graduate of Holten High School, Class of 1938. She resided in Danvers until the late 1970s, when she and her husband retired to Englewood, FL. She returned to this area in recent years, residing with her daughter and son-in-law in Wakefield.

Mrs. Beard was employed as a bookkeeper at Danvers Hardware for many years until her retirement.

She was a founding member of the Riverside Squares in Danvers and was a Round Dance caller; she and her husband continued square dancing and classes in Florida. She also enjoyed playing beano and cards.

She was a member and officer of the Englewood Lions Club; and was an active volunteer at her church, in hospitals, and in nursing homes while in Florida.

She is survived by her children and their spouses: John and Nancy Beard of Rowley, Thomas and Brenda Beard of ME; Cynthia and Perry Luke of Wakefield, and Susan Beard and Bob Canzano of Beverly; a brother, John Jack Zollo; her grandchildren: Ty, Wade, Kaitrin, Kelsey, Caileen, and Emmaleen Beard; step- granddaughters: Jennifer Whitney, Jessica Hudson and Joella Wieselquist and her great-grandchildren: Andrew, David, Erik and Dylan.

Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 9AM in St. Mary of the Annunciation Church, 24 Conant Street, Danvers. Relatives and friends are invited. Burial will follow in Annunciation Cemetery. Visiting hours are Tuesday from 4-8PM at C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers Square. HANSEN, KATHERINE F.

Katherine F. (Tufts) Hansen, 81, died late Friday afternoon at a local nursing facility following a lengthy illness. She was the wife of the late Roger Hansen, with whom she shared 15 years of marriage.

Born in Danvers on March 10, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Aaron and Catherine (Murphy) Tufts. She was raised and educated in Danvers and was a graduate of Holten High School, Class of 1942. She was also a graduate of Salem Commercial School. She resided in Danvers for most of her life until retiring to Centerville where she lived for several years before returning to this area due to illness.

For many years, Mrs. Hansen was employed as an inventory control clerk at the United Shoe Machinery Corporation. She was a member of the United Shoe Quarter Century Club.

Mrs. Hansen was a former parishioner of St. Richard Parish in Danvers.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Evelyn Tufts of Danvers; a nephew, Aaron Tufts of Portland, ME; and a niece, Sharon Tufts of Danvers. She was the sister of the late Aaron Tufts.

Her Funeral Mass will be Wednesday at 10AM in St. Richard Church, 90 Forest St., Danvers. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours are Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9PM at C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers Square. WROBLEWSKI, SIGMUND

Sigmund Wroblewski, 89, died Monday evening in a local nursing facility following a lengthy illness. He would have completed his ninetieth year on February 21st. He was the husband of Blanche (Szewick) Wroblewski, with whom he shared over 40 years of marriage.

Born in Salem, he was the son of the late Walter and Helena (Struzinski) Wroblewski, he was raised and educated in Salem and was a longtime Danvers resident. During WWII, Mr. Wroblewski served honorably in the U.S. Navy.

Mr. Wroblewski was employed for many years at both Mason Tanning and Matz Tanning prior to his retirement. He was a longtime ethnic member of the Polish, Russian, Lithuanian, American Citizens Club of Danvers, where he was very active. He also enjoyed bowling and square dancing with the Sand Duners.

He is survived by a sister, Regina Kowalski and her husband Alex of Salem; a sister-in-law, Stacia Wrobleski of Salem, and 5 nieces & nephews: Ellen Li, Thomas Dziuszko, Paul Kowalski, Barbara Romeo, and Philip Kowalski. He was the brother of the late Stephen Wrobleski and Regina Kingsley.

His Funeral Mass will be Friday at 11AM in St. Mary of the Annunciation Church, 24 Conant St., Danvers. Burial will follow in Annunciation Cemetery, Danvers. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours are Thursday from 3-6PM at C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers Square.

FISCHER, LILLIAN G.

Lillian G. (Proctor) Fischer, 83, died Tuesday afternoon at Brooksby Village following a lengthy illness. She was the wife of Eugene W. Fischer, who died in 1983.

Born in Stamford, CT on Oct. 3, 1922, she was the daughter of the late William and Karine (Backen) Proctor. She was raised and educated in Connecticut, and following the early deaths of her parents, was raised by her aunt and uncle, Charlotte and Septimus Gibson.

Mrs. Fischer was employed as a color artist during the 1940s at Quality Comics in New York City. She resided in Wayland for twenty years, where she raised her family. She then made her home on Cape Cod, living in Falmouth and Mashpee for over thirty years.

An active volunteer, she gave her time at various charitable agencies and organizations, including the Mashpee Senior Center and CLAWS, Cats Lost and Wanting Shelter; and the Treasure Chest Thrift Shop at Brooksby Village, where she made her home for the last four years. At Brooksby Village, she also started the Cat Club.

She is survived by her children: Frederick J. Fischer of Idaho and Leslie A. Carrington and her husband John of Middleton; and a son-in-law, Edmund Peirce of Amesbury. She is also survived by her cat, Sarah. She was predeceased by a daughter, Dale M. Fischer.

Her Funeral Service will be Sunday at 5PM at C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers Square. Visiting hours will precede the service from 3-5PM. Relatives and friends are invited. Burial will be Monday at 1PM in the Massachusetts Nat.l Cemetery, Bourne. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CLAWS, P O Box 2463, Mashpee MA 02649.

MARTIN, FRANCIS G.

MARTIN, FRANCIS G. - of Middleton, Francis G. Bus Martin, 96, died Saturday Feb. 4, 2006, following a lengthy illness at a local nursing facility. He was the husband of the late Marion (Connors) Martin.

Born on Jan. 22, 1910 in Peabody, MA, he was the son of the late Calvin and Isa (Perkins) Martin. He was raised and educated in Peabody. Mr. Martin had been employed at Sun Oil Company in Revere for many years.

He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Arthur of Middleton and Frank and Marie of Dublin, Ireland, four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother Charles.

Visiting hours are Wed., Feb. 8, 2006, from 3-5pm at C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St, Danvers. Burial services will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be in his name to Hospice of the North Shore, 10 Elm St., Danvers, MA 01923.
