BARRESI, BROTHER SEBASTIAN C.F.X. -- Brother Sebastian (George M. Barresi), C.F.X., a member of the Congregation of the Xaverian Brothers for almost sixty years, died on January 26 at age seventy-nine at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, MA.
The son of the late Mario Barresi and Annie Festa Barresi, he was born in Lynn, MA, on February 22, 1927. After graduating from Lynn Classical High School in 1945, he enlisted in the Army and served overseas. Returning to the United States, he entered the Xaverian Brothers in 1947.
After graduation from Loyola College in Baltimore with a BS degree in Psychology, he began a twenty-seven year teaching apostolate which would take him to St. Patrick's Grammar School and Mt. St. Joseph High School in Baltimore, MD; Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, New York; St. John's Prep in Danvers where he was the school's first full-time Director of Guidance, and Salem State College. Along the way he would earn his Masters of Education degree from Loyola College and pursue further graduate studies at Catholic University and Boston College. From 1979 to 1999 Brother Sebastian served the Xaverian Congregation in a number of administrative posts, including Provincial Assistant, Vocation Director, Vicar Provincial and Director of the St. John's Prep Brothers' community. He also assumed the directorship of the Emmaus Counseling Center, an inner healing ministry for priests, religious and lay men and women.
With all these responsibilities he still found the time to lead thirty-three pilgrimages to the religious site of Medjugorje in Croatia, bringing medical equipment, clothing and financial aid to the war-torn areas of that country. In 1999 he was appointed Director of Xaverian House, the Brothers' retirement facility on the campus of St. John's Prep. Ill health forced his retirement in 2002, but he remained on as a resident until his death. A man filled with a deep and abiding holiness, he still exuded at the time of his passing the same fraternal charity, enthusiasm, and joie de vivre that he had more than fifty years ago with his beloved third graders at St. Patrick's in Baltimore.
Brother Sebastian was preceded in death by his sisters Rose Pustorino, Frances Vasapolli, and Ellen Gemma and his brothers Angelo, Frank, and Arthur. He is survived by his sisters-in-law Greta Barresi of North Reading and Mary Barresi of Rhode Island, and also many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews who loved him and held him in great esteem.

EXELBY, PHILIP -- Dr. Philip R. Exelby quietly passed away after an extended illness on January 5, 2007, at the age of 78.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Marisa (Waite) Exelby; and two daughters Caroline Forrester, husband Jay and two sons Dylan and Jack of Ipswich; and Valerie Long, husband Kevin and daughter Alison of Colorado.
The family has lost a loving husband, grandfather and father. The world has lost a man whose compassion and commitment will never be forgotten. He was a pioneer in children's cancer surgery and has written many articles for academic journals. The handsome, blue-eyed British doctor with the bow ties and witty demeanor was the professor most likely to be sought out for advice by any one with an interest in medicine.
Dr. Exelby grew up in England. He graduated, on scholarship, from Oxford University. From 1970 to 1995, he was Chief of Pediatric Surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Professor of Surgery at Cornell Medical University in New York City. He had the competence and universal compassion for the human condition. He was a gentleman of great prestige and yet, he was always accessible to everyone.
He retired from Sloan-Kettering in 1995 and spent years in the Far East, providing medical care to children whose families had so little money they could not afford any care. He flew to Phuket, Thailand at the end of 2004, to help in the care of children hurt or left homeless by the giant tsunami. His work took him to the country hospitals where people born with nothing were to die alone with nothing. Status and wealth were never important to him; a life well lived was his success.
Dr. Exelby was a teacher. There will always be something that we could learn from the Professor; his experiences were larger than life. He had his own family laughing until they would cry. He flew Spitfires, a great passion, while with the Royal British Air Force. He was captain of the soccer team at Oxford. He traveled the world as a brilliant speaker on the course of medicine for cancer in children. His friends span the continents and he will be grieved around the world. Funeral arrangements will be private. In lieu of flowers, a fitting tribute would be donations to the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Hospice of the North Shore, 10 Elm St., Danvers, MA 01923.
